Smallville 7.17 Sleeper (2007)

The Department of Domestic Security employ Jimmy to spy on Chloe as they attempt to work out why she keeps hacking top secret government data centres. Clark and Chloe are attempting to find Brainiac and Kara. Lex makes plans to travel to Zurich to open the box but finds surprising opposition.

These are brain cells I'm never going get back. This does have an unintentional comedy giant Jimmy Olsen head (just after Chloe leaves the apartment after the credits finish). Otherwise this is shocking television. "It is possible that the velocity of their flight created some sort of ionic displacement in the outer atmosphere." Somebody wrote that on purpose and submitted it deliberately. A team of producers accepted it. Then poor old Allison Mack had to say it. As compensation, she does get a nice dance sequence with Aaron Ashmore. The final scene does not bode well for the story arc over the next three episodes.

This Smallville episode contains violence, unpleasant scenes.

Smallville 7.12 Fracture (2007)

Lex and Lois has tracked down Kara to Detroit but things don't go well when they go to pick her up.

A truly atrocious pre-title sequence sees Lex and Lois (!) tracking down Kara using a tracking device Lex has planted in Kara's necklace (even though he's never had opportunity) quickly followed by an amnesiac Kara responding to her name even though her captor has been calling her Linda and then calling out Lex's name even though she shouldn't be able to remember it. It doesn't matter that things are explained later; it's a bad start and that's that. The explanation, as it turns out, is fine up to the point SPOILER where Lex has memories after the moment he gets SHOT IN THE HEAD END SPOILER. On the positive side, it's good to see that the writers of Smallville have remembered how lock picks work this week and it was very good to see Clark entreat the good in Lex rather than just shoot him down.

This Smallville episode contains graphic gun violence, extreme violence, gory and unpleasant scenes and sex scene.

Golden Compass, The (2007)

Pintsize tearaway Lyra Belacqua and her daemon Pan travel the world to find her friend Roger even though she doesn't know he's been kidnapped yet. To do this, she goes to live with a stuck-up rich lady whom she doesn't like. At this rate, she'll eventually start flirting with a polar bear.

This is the kind of game that could put you off gaming for life. For that matter, it could put you off life for life. The game starts with action (including an hilarious polar bear blocking animation, the first of many) and, while bland, this isn't too awful. Once that prologue level is done, we get to stiltedly explore offensively ugly environments while having our ears assaulted by criminally half-hearted voice work. The game doesn't save at all checkpoints and so I had to repeat half an hour of mindless uselessness because the game crashed (the first of three times) during a fight against a monkey. Acheivements are not easy to come by either so it doesn't even work as a gamerscore purchase (I ended with 660). Jerky, standard-def movie clips with duff sound are just another aspect of a consistently miserable experience.

When a travel video starts with statements like that it is a certainty that the video is going to be disappointing.

What total crap. The only reason the French won't speak English to you is if you expect them to rather than you try their language first.

Part 1 (northern France) gets 5/10, part 2 (southern France) gets 2/10

Oh yes, the event of the year came round last night. That's right, better than my birthday or Christmas, seen as you don't get Wogan, cheesy pop, European "celeberities" or amazing dance routines at either. Hmm, come to think, those Latvian Pirates would have made my birthday so much more interesting.

So, Georgi, Kim and I decided to organise a little Eurovision party for last night, seen as none of us had ever been to one before and 'cos we're really cool (Y). Kim brought Oreos, Georgi hosted (because she has the biggest telly =D ) and contributed party rings, crispy chocolate things and Cadbury yoghurts, whilst I brought Union Jack hats and flags, coke and cheese and pineapple sticks. Stupid as it may sound, there is actually an art to making those cheese and pineapple sticks, especially when you have uber mature cheddar that keeps crumbling. And on the flag and hat thing, we didn't even want the UK to win (we wouldn't even if it was the best, like last year's, thanks to political voting) but they added to the cheesiness.

So off we toddled to Georgi's, where a big sofa was set up in front of a big telly. Add to that Oreos, party rings, crispy things, chocolate yoghurts, cheese and pineapple stucks, coke and really plasticy hats and flags and you've got yourself a proper Eurovision party. Yeah.

And we weren't let down by the acts, although I was really disappointed that Ireland's Dustin the turkey didn't get in, as well as Andorra's Boudaka (spelling?) look-a-like entry. But never mind. We kept track of our favourites and then wrote down our top 3 at the end, which turned into a top 5 and eventually a top 12. Our top favourites were Latvia at the top, with their AMAZING pirates doing a really cool song and dance. This was followed by Azerbaijan, who had a bloke who sounded like he had tight trousers along with a man with very long hair. Our third (and by no means turd) favourite was Spain, an old man with a load of GaGa-esque women; oh, and it had lyrics like "Cuatro, el Robocop. Baila Chiki Chiki...". Wowawooa. Other notable gooduns included Iceland, Sweden, Spain, Turkey, France and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

So, the scoring. Obviously political voting played a major part, with Eastern Europe voting mostly for itself. The UK came joint last on 14 points with Germany and Poland, but then thats no big surprise. Even Latvia, our favourite, despite being fairly eastern, did not get many votes. Boo. In the end, as predicted by Wogan, Russia won, which wasn't too bad, seen as they were in our top 12 and had a (quite literally) cool act involving an ice skater (on a very small patch of ice), a violinist and a singer who (apparently) resembled Russel Howard.

So now Russia are one step closer to world domination.
Any competitors beware of Polonium 210 and the KGB.

Yep, it's harsh reality, there to smack you in the head, as it always seems to. The photo above came to my desk while hunting for source material to fuel my current background project, documenting East Coast customs and hot rods... My father gave me some surviving photos of old cars and car shows, and mixed in was the gem you see above. The car was his personal ride, a '57 Chevy 210 that he originally purchased with a six cylinder. The car received a nifty little 283, bored to 301ci, and backed with a 3-speed, 4.11:1's, and exhaust he described only as "loud". The car was respectable and quick for the times, running low 13's. Not too shabby for a kid, and especially for a daily driver.
Anyhow, the moment above captures the aftermath of a floor shift install. Say what? OK, not the IMMEDIATE aftermath... You see, my dad had installed a floor shifter that fine day, and, like so mmany times that I'm sure we can all look back on and say "yup... done that!", he rushed through to get to work on time (night shift!), and we all know how shifter installs seem to go... Something ALWAYS goes a little haywire. Needless to say, shifting from second to third resulted in, well, nothing.

Youthful thought offeered the option to just reach through the ample hole in the floorboard and grab the linkage, when the stars aligned to strengthjen the Chevy versus Ford battle, and the mighty Chevy plowed into a '63 Fairlane.

The car was fixed, using the remains of a t-boned Bel Air hardtop, with the same car supplying the interior for this same car a bit later. The car was sold when my father entered the service, and marked a three year span of ownership in his life. We'll have to look at the '64 Impala and '66 Charger that followed at some point, too, all with somewhat better results! 

Granted, I've done worse myself (and with no shift linkage to blame!), and that's not the point here... It's just an interesting look back on a moment frozen in time... one of those images you don't often see. It's real life mixing with youth, hot rodding, and all of those experiences we try to teach our own young 'uns with...

My Auntie took me and my cousin to the cinema, mainly because my car is in the garage - but  also because she owed me a favor for getting her other car fixed. She took us in her secondhand  daewoo -  my god what an awful car! The gears were clunky, it looks awful inside and the space in the boot was about as large as a standard small fish bowl - pretty appalling for what I thought was a cheap car manufacturer with good ideas!

I started in Piper Tomahawk, and then moved to a Piper Warrior before finishing primary training. After receiving my license I got checked off in an Archer which was an easy mice flying airplane (I also probably have more hours in this airplane than any other).

I skipped high performance training and went right into ME with the Seneca (with some Piper Lance training thrown in). After my ME license, I also got checked out in a Cessna 182 (which was also a great plane) and a 210.

The 182 was also a plane that I enjoyed to fly, it was a nice blend of utility, performance, reliability, and ease of flying. My only negatives were I did not like the “push button” throttle, mixture and prop controls not did I like the “look” if a high wing as much (although this is admittedly a silly reason to give a negative mark for). I did like the electric flaps of the Piper aircraft I flew. Over all if I ever can fly again and could own a plane this would be one I would really look for (even with the minor negatives I stated).

The Seneca probably was still my favorite. I still remember my first flight (which came after a couple hundred hours in Archers and Warriors); it was just skinny me and my also small ME instructor and when I pulled back on the yoke at just above Vr, the plane immediately pegged 2000 + on the VSI and that really was cool. This was also an easy to handle plane (albeit rather slow considering fuel consumption), VMC demonstration was easy in this plane.

Here are a couple videos, the first is of a Seneca Flight (my favorite airplane that I personally flew). The second is a really cool video of an Air Force flight (I believe a C17) through a severe thunderstorm with lots of lighting, turbulence and St. Elmo’s fire:

Team IPossible RFOM exploit to run unsigned code on PS3 FW 2.10

CE and StreetskaterFU have announced that that they've found a method to execute unsigned code on retail Sony PlayStation 3 units running firmware 2.10. If this proves to be true, then we might be seeing PS3 homebrew soon.While the current method is still in its early phase, the hackers (and many members of the community) feel that this is very promising. What makes this hack work is a Resistance: Fall of Manexploit which allows the hackers to run SELF files in the PS3s operating system.

So far, they've already coded a program which allows them to convert ELF files into SELF files. All they need to do is clean up the code to get screen output. Once they do so, they plan to create a "Hello World" program on the PS3.

We're gonna keep a close eye on this in the days to come. While waiting for any breakthroughs, you might want to check out the video of the exploit in action and see the hack for yourself.
