Friday, October 10th, 2008 -- Being the girlfriend on the singer/bassist of Calm before the Crash, I knew I was going to take pictures tonight. The last show I had gone to, my pictures failed miserably because of the lens I was using. The 18-55 kit lens that comes with the Canon Rebel XT. It's a good lens (sometimes), but is not ideal for dark shots. The built in flash on the camera didn't light the bands enough, and I am definitely in need of a new flash for my camera, so that's all I had to work with. Needless to say, the last show wasn't a very good night for pictures.

Boybot suggested using the 50mm (f1.8) and see what the pictures would turn out like. Me being the VERY amateur photographer that I am, I didn't think of that, and thanked him.

The pictures turned out wonderful.

The first of two bands that I took pictures of was New City Skyline.

Two things I noticed right off the bat that discouraged me a little; the band brought fog machines and lights of their own. In addition to having to combat the fog from reaching my lungs, I was worried about my camera (she's my baby, after all). The band put on a wonderful performance, and had no idea who I was taking pictures of them. After their performance, they were delighted to learn I was portraying them in a good way.

The next band was Calm Before the Crash. As I mentioned before, since I am in a relationship with the bassist, I always feel like I favor him too much when I take pictures, so I try to spread myself out throughout the stage, mostly on the opposite side so as not to make anyone in the band jealous of one another. Sadly for me, I had no choice this time. The stage was not evenly lit, providing me little light to work with on the right side (facing the stage). This resulted in less than desirable pictures of boybot, but spectacular pictures of both the guitarist and drummer.

As always, you can find more pictures of the show on my flickr.

So thank you 50mm lens! You have saved me! Overall, it was a fantastic show. I highly recommend checking out both of these bands, they're very personable people as well as talented musicians.

Wybrałem właśnie to.

Średnia długość życia kobiet to 47 lat, mężczyzn – 42.

Good for low-light (duh!)... i need to state the obvious reason for getting this no?

Shows sign of use, superficial barrel and mount wear can be seen. Its a well-used lens... optically still perfect. Beats the EF 50mm f/1.4 hands down. (shucks even the EF 50mm f/1.8 beats it)... do check out the aperture blade arrangement for bokeh shape below...

Focus is smooth, aperture blades clean, always kept at f/22 for aperture-spring longevity.

This is a manual-focus Contax-mount Zeiss.

Condition: Moderate use (7/10)

Canon 50mm F-2.5 EF Compact Macro Lens
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dayton_Rowland]Dayton Rowland

One of the best lenses that I would recommend for your Canon EOS camera would be the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lens. While this lens has its drawbacks, it's an unbeatable value for the money.

This lens was one of the first lenses that Canon released with the EOS system in 1987, so it's been in production for over 20 years. As such, this lens is rather high-quality compared to lenses designed today. It has a metal lens mount, and a very sturdy plastic body. This is a standard EF lens, meaning that it will work on any Canon EOS camera, digital or film - this includes newer digital cameras such as the Digital Rebel series, EOS 10D/20D/30D/40D, and high-end cameras such as the EOS 1D and 5D.

This lens is (as the name implies) rather compact and lightweight, so it's easy to carry around. Focusing is very reliable, but a little noisier and slower than newer EF lenses. Optics in this lens are very high-quality, and allow for beautiful photos.

The lens allows for macro focusing of objects up to a ratio of 1:2 life size. What this means is that the smallest objects that the lens can focus will be recorded on your film (or in the case of a digital camera, image sensor) at half their real-life size. This lens also allows for infinity focus, a capability that some macro lenses lack. This means that you can use this lens as a regular 50mm lens. In addition to photography of small objects, it is excellent for practically everything. Its narrow depth of field allows for a beautiful "bokeh" effect which is wonderful for portraits!

Some more expensive macro lenses can focus at "life-size", meaning that the smallest objects that can be focused will be recorded on the film or image sensor at the same size that they are in real-life. Alone, the Compact Macro lacks this capability. However, you can purchase the Canon Life-Size Converter, which will allow for you to focus up to life-size, allowing you to take even more detailed photographs of tiny objects!

Overall, the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lens is an unbeatable value for what you get, and an essential must-have for any Canon EOS owner that can afford it!

I just came across this bill that has been proposed. The "Orphan Works Bill." What this basically will do if it goes through is, any work of art (photographs, songs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, ect.) that anyone makes, is basically up for grabs to anyone, until the creator pays for the copyright.

Right now, if you create something you own it and the rights to it (you can get a more official copyright that you have to pay for, but even if you don't get that, you still own the rights to whatever you create). If this law goes through, you must pay before you own ANY rights to ANYTHING you make.

Here is a YouTube video that helps describe this bill a bit better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqBZd0cP5Yc

So what to do?? Write an already email swamped congressman. Yes I guess that is our only option, it seems like it will be hard to get noticed among all of the financial emails, but we have to try.

It all so might help to write Fox or CNN, asking for some light to be cats on this bill, surely can't hurt, and maybe we could get lucky.

Also it would seem like a good idea to write all the members we can of various photo hosting sites, sending this information along, and asking them to do the same to members and friends.

Without numbers of emails, we will never be noticed, and the Senate has already passed the bill, so it could become law any day now.

Contact your congressman.
http://bcapote.wordpress.com/2008/10/03/orphan-works-bill/

**UPDATE*** You can track the bill, and read up on it here: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-5889

Of course it was introtuced by a Californian democrat...

This is the most mammoth camera lens I’ve ever seen, and has almost unbelievable specifications:

And now, this bad boy is for sale on eBay, for the low, low price of $55,000.00.

I think the best part is the quote from the seller:

This is a very rare Canon 5200mm photographic lens - possibly one of only three ever built. THE largest & most powerful prime lens ever created for dedicated SLR use. Built in Japan it was purchased by a Chinese company & shipped to China where it has since had little use & is now for sale. The optics appear in perfect condition. It is my understanding that a customized SLR/DSLR/EF mount can be created/included by the team of optical engineers who presently look after the lens. Due to its large size, it may be better suited to astronomy applications. It takes two people to lift the lens. It could also be mounted on a customized truck or SUV. A large geared or motorized support head would be needed to get the most out it. The magnification of this lens is truly staggering. If mounted to a Canon XL series video camera for example, a reach of 1000x optical (at least) would be possible (approx 37,500mm). The lens could also be mounted to HD & cine cameras. Tracking the space shuttle would not be a problem. Perhaps it's already been used for that purpose? - (Did I just say that??!) Manual focus of course. Yes rear drop-in filters can be used. With so few ever built Canon spent "squillions" on the R&D, not to mention the manufacturer of this lens. Original cost price?? - don't even ask!! ;) In all seriousness I can't be accurate. The Canon factory picture shows the lens mounted to an SLR camera (circled in red) - this will further give you an idea of it's size.

For a better idea of how powerful this lens is, take a look at the following example:

Canon 50mm f1.8

[gallery]
Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM - love this lens. It's built like a tank, weighing over a pound (17.8 oz.).

By far, the fastest lens I have ever shot with, it has taken some getting used to. The focus plane at f/1.4 is paper thin and because of that, focusing becomes a bit of an art form. I think I end up deleting 3-5 shots for every one I keep, especially under lower-light conditions.

More time, more practice, more better - grammatically incorrect but another viewfinder lesson.
