For many years the core of a film’s marketing push, film-trailers haven’t changed much over

For many years the core of a film’s marketing push, film-trailers haven’t changed much over the ages. And sadly in many cases they have become an uninspired précis of the film’s plot combined with a spoiler-style preview of all the good scenes. But the trend of dull marketing for films may be coming to an end. Whilst websites and online games have become standard for all Hollywood films, some are wading a little further into the murky waters of online marketing. Let’s compare two recent films: I am Legend and Cloverfield.

I am Legend followed the traditional approach to marketing – a big-name star, trailers, interviews, a micro-site – it even went as far as to create an online game in the digital world of Second Life. The campaign was reasonably successful, but costly (they spent over $2 million on marketing in New York alone).

On the other hand, Cloverfield made more clever use of its slim marketing budget (around $20 million globally). With an unknown cast, their only advantage was surprise. Their first masterstroke was to create trailers and posters that did not reveal the name of the film (along with a powerful image of a smoking New York). This immediately created a buzz and sent keyboard-jockeys wild looking for clues as to what this mysterious new film was:

We said "We want to talk to you about not putting a title on and what are your regulations regarding that?" And they said "Regulations? No-one’s ever done a teaser trailer or trailer without a title." It’s like putting out a commercial without actually what the thing is. (Matt Reeves, Director)

Their campaign was all about trying to create active interest in a potential audience. To make people go online, look for information and discuss theories. People are adept at tuning out all the passive advertising noise in their environment, but Cloverfield managed to make cinema-goers reel themselves in.

Another clever move was creating a rumour that the poster somehow revealed an image of the monster. Again this created a flurry of blogs and online videos - all claiming to have revealed the true image of the creature (in fact you had to mirror the poster). In a similar vein, buzz was created by using different titles during the shooting of the film (including the somewhat ridiculous Chocolate Outrage).

Fake websites for tie-in brands to the film were also created along with a complex background story to the film’s events, which sent audiences scouring the internet for clues. Some even connected Cloverfield to viral marketing attempts set up for other films (thereby making other people’s marketing budgets work for them!)

…a lot of the stuff didn’t have anything to do with us, it was just because people were so interested…they were making connections to things that didn’t have anything to do with us…

Most importantly, the producers realised how fatal over publicity could be, especially when your film doesn’t have a lot of marketable elements except surprise:

That's why we decided we better to shut up, because the flames were already so high….

It worked. Cloverfield took $41 million in its first three days. So next time you want to market something, maybe you should try not shouting about it.

The desk I've been stationed to was seemingly used for the placement people, as such there was a selection of junk to clear off it. Nothing really good, just scrap. But now my desk is pretty bare and it makes me sad. People have lots of cool random things on there desks, whereas I'm redundant even just of a measly pen holder. The one thing I seem to have collected is a Sunderland FC sticker (Panini style, but not). Well, that's no good to me being a Boro fan.

So, gimme some inspiration - what have you got on your desk? The randomer, the better.

(ps - no comments on the word randomer, I've decided I like it)

Commonwealth Bank: no different at all actually

Difference ain’t everything
We’ve watched with amazement at the Commonwealth Bank’

Difference ain't everything

We've watched with amazement at the Commonwealth Bank's attempt to position itself "differently" in the market. Banks are a bit like insurance companies; unfortunately you need them, but don't necessarily want them. And mostly, they are seen as greedy and insensitive.

The latest AMI Marketing magazine had an interview with the "brains" behind the new ads, Mark Buckman, who said that he was pleased with the controversy the ads created. Interestingly, he said that the ads were never designed to communicate anything about the Bank (what the?) and were purely a device to capture attention and create an emotional connection. Well, Mr Buckman, we can tell you that you've wasted squids of cash on this campaign, and we'll tell you why.

The brand promise: check with your people!

A friend of ours recently received a statement from the CBA, with a $25 late fee. That same statement showed he had paid $130 off the balance (the minimum was $25). Apparently, because he hadn't paid by the due date, he was slugged the fee. A few days later, our friend received a "Dear Valued Customer" letter asking him to increase his credit limit. Our friend (and rightly so) went to the branch (with both documents) and asked that the fee be reversed. After all, he argued, if he was that valuable, they wouldn't hesitate. They refused to reverse it, and he switched to Virgin.

What the Commonwealth hasn't done is made sure that their internal culture matches the external rhetoric (or is that propaganda...?) of their advertising. If they really wanted to live the brand promise (and be different!), that $25 would have been reversed. Our friend would have been very happy and we would be blogging about how great the CBA is, instead of how not. This blog will be seen by countless people, and, well, you get the picture. The Commonwealth Bank will still be seen as greedy and insenstive (and now not very smart) because of the experience people have with its frontline. And people don't want dumb banks.

A lesson to us all: don't embark on an advertising campaign unless you are sure you can deliver the promise.

PubMatic's AdPrice Index report showed some interesting (and gloomy) trends on the state of web monetization. Overall, their aggregate index for web monetization was down 23% from March to April. The report highlights the continued declines in eCPMs across all segments of the web. That is, except for one... "Small web sites" (what PubMatic terms sites with less < 1M pg views / mo) was the only segment to increase eCPMs from March to April (up ~9%). Whether or not this trend is a result of the rise in vertical ad networks and third party monetization solutions is unclear, but it certainly highlights the opportunity to win advertisers' check-books by delivering a clearly segmented demographic (and selling-thru your inventory doesn't hurt either).

Other interesting facts... Verticals - Social networks were the hardest hit, dropping 47% m-o-m. Technology sites faired the best, holding relatively flat m-o-m, but were still ~10% down from January highs. Segments - not surprisingly, large web sites (>100M pg views) were the hardest hit segment, dropping 52% m-o-m.

“Say it your way”

A while back I posted about the possibility of amphetamine use in Iraq. Last night, watching the Lakers victory, there was a commercial for a new video war game called Haze. Here is the ad copy.

They gave me the best weapons. Then they gave me Necter. It made me feel invincable. But for every high, there is a low. Now I'm fighting back.

According to the game mags, you are hooked up to an IV (necter administrator) in your combat suit that allows you to inject yourself with "necter", which gives you a boost of super-energy. However, if you use too much of it, you crash and get out of control.

Functional Contact Points are contact points that are directly related to the functional aspects of the product and hold mostly functional value. The best way to increase the value of these contact points is to increase efforts taken for research & development or innovation that would improve the inherent technology. However, the market that we face today replicates technology easily such that any Wowability created is easily eroded. Thus, to maintain the Wowability that a brand has, it has to tap into other groups of contact points to gain a stronger hold on its Wowability. But having said that functional contact points are essential. Some of the more generic functional contact points include features, quality, convenience, and even location. Brands need to understand this group of contact points and how to create Wow points out of them.

Klondike sponsored a good portion of the Thursday night TV tonight on NBC, so during My Name is Earl and The Office we were subjected to two of the more sexist, chauvinistic, and sophomoric ad campaigns that I've seen in a long time. Basically, the full focus of these ads is men, but not all men, rather men who feel as if talking to their partner is a nuisance or that women are somehow inferior to men. These commercials sent me back 50 years to the days of these ads. I'm not a marketing exec or anything, so I don't know how or why these commercials even made it to the air, but I imagine that they'll work. Oh well, all I can do is not buy Klondikes.

Yep, it's real and it's almost here.

Clear your calendar and your credit cards.

Make sure your broadband bill is paid and you have a backup generator come May 20, 2008.

Make sure the cat or dog hasn't frayed your keyboard USB connector.

West Coasters like me will have to have our caffeine injected and ready to start typing and clicking by 9 AM ... but East Coasters can meander in at noon.

Briefly, the price is $299.00 (+ 12.95 S&H).

Limited to 1,000.

Yes, you need a membership in the Red Line Club ($24.95+shipping) and GET THAT TAKEN CARE OF before May 20, 2008 - you want avoid any problems.

You must FIRST sign up for the Hot Wheels Club (free) - then click on SHOP.

Yes, you can only buy ONE per RLC membership ...

... But you can buy FIVE RLC memberships at the SAME MAILING ADDRESS!

BUT you will need 5 emails addresses and you have to log off before logging back on.

Any other questions, we think we pretty much answered any questions you might have in our earlier posts - here, here & here.

(Whoa, we started talking about these 6 months ago?!)

Good luck one and all and may the best 1,000 of us get as may as we want, need, desire and crave :-)

For those of you who plan on opening their set, may you live to be a thousand and be blessed with harmony, wisdom, beauty and a Red Ransberg ... for those who just intend to rush onto eBay, may your mouse click and return key stop functioning :-) ... BTW, RLC items are NOT allowed to be pre-sold on eBay so you can report any sellers who pre-list and pre-sell the set starting today or until it is actually IN HAND. At that point, Mattel no longer restricts (re)selling a RLC item ...

After you sign up, you can read more details about the set HERE ... (there is a typo in Mattel's list - Gask-It is #80, not the third #84)

Our first un-boxing photos are HERE.

If you'd like to send us yours when you get the set and open it - be sure and email them to us or send us a link!

For those of you are undecided on whether to buy, it's $8.30 a CAR not including S&H, quite a bit of inflation from the last exclusive Red Line box set of $5.51 a CAR.

For those keeping track, here are the Piston Cup CARS out:

Lightning McQueen
Chick Hicks
Dale Jr.*
Gasprin
The King
Leak Less
Nitrorade
No Stall
RPM
Octane Gain
Tow Cap
Vinyl Toupee

NOTE - the Speedway set Dale Jr. is a variant.

Shiny Wax #82 & Sparemint #93 are announced as 3-packs plus we have seen Trunk Fresh #34 as a launcher so 14 (if you're a variant collector) or 15 of the 36 CARS are available or will soon be available in other packs ... as people have asked, does it mean every Piston Cup Race CAR will be released in some form or another ... Probably, possibly, maybe ... yes, likely but will they all be available in 2008? Highly unlikely but anything is possible. Yes, that's no answer but that's the Mattel answer.

It seems that Mattel is aiming to use the single cards to sell the highest visibility CARS and CARS that are the most interesting looking might get a solo card release - so I imagine that some of the Piston Cup CARS might get solo card releases like Tac-o-Mint, Mac iCar (Mattel is calling it the Apple Car) and a few others but some are frankly not all are that visually exciting (of course, to us, we'll take anything) so most will make appearances as 3-packs with their crew chief and Movie Moments (okay, the Apple CAR is more likely to be a Movie Moment packed with Mike or something ...) but does that mean everything will come out at some point - that's probably the plan but will it be 100% certain? No ... There is no way of telling ,,, just as most guesses were on the lower end scale of $249 and not $299 ... so anything, evrything and nothing is possible, impossible or probable ... the bottom line is Mattel doesn't even know ... but they would never admit that ;-)

So, now we know pricing - you in? You out? You want to vent?

I'm so pissed off right now that I can barely muster up the words to express it. I'll just keep this as short as possible. Season 7 of Smallville, overall, was a decent season. It had many moments that made me very excited about where the show was going---until today, when the CW finally revealed the series' destination: straight down the toilet. Just thinking about how crappy the season finale was is making my blood pressure go up, so I'm just going to list off the reasons why, then I'm going to see if I can find a better show to flush out all the bullshit I just absorbed. Here's a short list of why Smallville's latest season finale was complete garbage:

1. More commercials than show. Maybe the CW thought we'd get so confused from all the advertising that we'd actually believe the episode was going somewhere...

2. Full of corny and sappy moments between characters I really could care less about in this particular episode.

3. Cut to commercial.

4. Predictable plot twists. Brainiac gets "killed"... again... and I'm sure he'll be back... again.

5. Nothing exciting happens at all.

6. Cuts to commercial again.

7. Holy stupid, stupid, stupid, anti-climatic endings, Batman!

8. Once again, the writers of the show manage to keep Clark Kent's character lame and un-superman-like. I thought Lana's character was bad, but Clark is catching up quickly---almost with super-speed.

9. I lost an hour of my life that I will never get back.

10. Most of that hour was filled with stupid commercials that nobody gives a shit about!

Is there anyone out there that was actually able to extract something good from this season finale? I'd love to know...

From: The Sugarbuzz Project

My Google AdSense account has slowly been increasing in monetary value. I’m sure many of you have noticed the AdSense stuff on this site, and you have all heard that it’s a good thing to have for making some money. Today, I want to talk about another way to use your AdSense account to make money - by using other people’s resources. No, it’s not some black-hat method. Just keep reading.

I have been noticing several forums (including WiseBread and Digital Point) have a feature known as Ad Revenue Sharing using Google AdSense. The way it works is when you reach a certain number of posts, the admins allow you to ad your AdSense for Content code (which can be found under your Account Settings page in your AdSense account) to a special field in your profile options, and the forum uses this code to generate the ads, which help you earn money when they are clicked. Nice, eh?

A quick search for ‘revenue sharing forum’ should help you find several different forums to join. Be sure to use valid post responses when responding to a thread. You don’t want to spam a forum just to reach your AdSense enabling threshold. Besides, most of the forums I have seen have rules against that.

Now, keep in mind it’s not a rapid influx of cash, however it’s something. With just one forum, I will get the odd click every now and then, which adds a few cents to my AdSense account each time. Remember, any money earned is good money.

If you are a member of a forum with these features, but don’t have an AdSense account, I highly recommend getting one. They are free.

Have fun!

Hello again, friends.
Well, getting fired is never pretty.

Everyone knows it. It

Hello again, friends.

Well, getting fired is never pretty.

I. Got. Fired.

Everyone knows it. It's been beaten to death. It happened for all the right reasons. My old agency and I just weren't a good fit. We were going in super different directions. It doesn't make them a bad agency; far from it. They have a spectacular client services team, analytics team, great media buyers, talented print designers. I spent all my waking hours promoting them, which I couldn't have done if I hadn't believed they were really great people.

But digital and DRTV are different worlds, and since the agency and I were divided on which direction we, as a group, ought to take, there was a split.

So, I got a call from the head of the agency, a truly remarkable, likeable, and spectacular person, who's been following my progress over the past two weeks. This person politely asked for a blogger cease-fire, and I told her I'd make the appropriate calls.

Well, for future reference, I rather think it's time we moved on.

Besides, I have this afternoon made a commitment to a very awesome client, and I have more important things to do with my time than waste it pontificating about the folks in DR who don't wish to immerse themselves in new media. They'll "get it" when they get it, right?

Anyhoo, I am way stoked about my new client. The product, which I may have the opportunity to tell you about later, is way effective. The folks I'm working with are spectacular. I'm beginning a long, tall pour of effort, diligence, passion, and discernment for this company, and I couldn't be more pleased.

Honestly, in this business, it's important to work with people you admire, trust, and genuinely like. And it's equally important to promote only the products you find effective, efficient, useful to consumers, and truly marketable. If you hit all those bases as an ad dude, you are lucky beyond lucky. So, I'm intensely grateful that one of my first endeavors is such a home run. =-)

O'Dell and Team FTW!
