Cuidado, companheiro!
A vida é pra valer
E não se engane não, tem uma só
Duas mesmo que é bom
Ninguém vai me dizer que tem
Sem provar muito bem provado
Com certidão passada em cartório do céu
E assinado embaixo: Deus
E com firma reconhecida!
A vida não é brincadeira, amigo
A vida é arte do encontro
Embora haja tanto desencontro pela vida
Há sempre uma mulher à sua espera
Com os olhos cheios de carinho
E as mãos cheias de perdão
Ponha um pouco de amor na sua vida
Como no seu samba..."

Yeah! The new session in this blog, ALLin5 (All you want to know about OUR favourite artist in 5 questions), starts with one of the biggest promises in the eletronic music in Europe: Joystick Disco.

Joystick Disco is a 22 y-o eletronic musician from Inverness (Scotland). After 5 years playing alive in parties he become famous in his area, and after 2 videoclips (that you can see on youtube - Brink and Dance&Clap) we are sure that he will conquer the world. Adam, the real name of JD will told us more about him and the project.

2MW: Which is the origin of your project name: Joystick Disco? You are so young to made part of the Atari Generation...

JD: There is no real origin of Joystick Disco, just two words that i felt described my music well, as it is mostly made on a big computer with some analog devices and it is music for people to dance to. I am too young for the Atari, but i do have photos of myself playing a Super Nintendo when i was very young! Computer Games and their music has definitely influenced me in some way.

2MW: Kraftwerk still is a big reference to all bands on today's eletronic scene. Are your influenced by them? Which artists influenced you and your music?

JD: Yes one of the first electronic albums i bought was 'Autobahn' by Kraftwerk, it is a great cd. My favorite kind of music is late seventies and early eighties electro/disco. I love songs like 'space woman' by Charlie and the whole italo disco scene. I love hip hop from this period, Grandmaster Flash and The Sugar Hill Gang are a big influence on me. Also french house producers like Daft Punk and Mr Oizo are excellent. Jackson and His Computer Band is another musician from France i admire, his album 'Smash' is a perfect match of music and creative production. One of my favorite albums is by a french band from the eighties called Martin Dupont the album is called 'Just Because' It is full of great old synthesiser rhythms!

2MW: How is it going the eletronic music scene in Scotland and Europe? Do you believe there's space to other styles than Eurodance in Europe?

JD: The electronic scene is pretty good right now, there is great dance music coming from Scotland, people like 'Dolby Anol' and 'Hostage' make brilliant tracks. There are also great club nights in Glasgow and Edinburgh. I think no matter what city you are in in Europe you will be able to find a venue playing the music you like, the big clubs will tend to play more 'Eurodance' but that is a completely different scene to the people who like more interesting and eclectic dance music. The venues are usually smaller but its all about having a good time.

2MW: You have been distinguished as a DJ who fills dancefloors, an "alive" artist. Do you have any plans to record an album?

JD: I do plan to produce a proper album, but i would only release it if I thought it was up to a high standard, i enjoy the music I produce right now but I am still in the process of developing my own style and sound. I really enjoy dj'ing as it is still new to me and i like to try to experiment alot with different styles of music. I try to make it all really dance floor freindly by adding extra production while playing. It feels great to see people dancing to my own music, as well as the old electro i love.

2MW: In Brazil there are big eletronic music festivals, like Skol Beats (the biggest one). Do you have plans to come to Brazil play and maybe drink some caipirinhas? Do you know the brazilian music?

JD: Yes I have heard of the Skol Beats Festival, it looks excellent! I would of course love to play in Brazil, i would like to visit lots of countries and meet the people there. I have heard hip hop from Brazil and the 'Baile Funk' sound is fantastic!

Sound Travels: Episode 6...Baileduro, or Baile Funk meets Kuduro

Well, Marcus checking in here with the details on this weeks episode of Sound Travels, "Baileduro." Now I think I just invented this word, sort of born from the music I had a yen to spin for you today, both Baile Funk and Kuduro. Styles of music the common theme being in their tone being born from the Lusophone (Portuguese Speaking) lands of Brazil and Angola. As the shared language implies, the connection between these countries is easy to reference, though the sharing is deeper than that. Brazil, the syncretic stew that it is(much like America), imported many Africans from Angola to work its vast sugar plantations when both nations were subjects of Portugal. So certain sensibilities of Africa permeate the culture. From that melange many musical styles have emerged, but it's Baile Funk that, with its energy and unabashed emotion that reminds me of the music from Angola known as Kuduro.

So when the week rolled up I thought why not, it works in the mix. And while I have an understanding of the styles, you may not, so just click the links for more proper elucidations of the origins of these styles if history is your bag. If you want to skip the details, and hear what it all sounds like, here you go...

[Audio=http://radiomilwaukee.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/sound-travels-baileduro-done.mp3]

And I wasn't joking all week when I said megamix, because this week I flowed about 13 cuts into the blend. No worries, each song is separated by a Sound Travels drop and I have details on the artists in order here :

1. Track 12: Diplo Presents Favela Strikes Back : In typical Diplo fashion, this compilation of Baile beats is served sans track information to protect the artists who, as it seems, sample from material already based on samples. This cut, though unknown does rely on Professor Longhair's Creole stomper "Big Chief" for its melody, though the beat is pure Baile rolling like mutant Miami Bass.

2. Buraka Som Sistema : "Yah (Cosmic Mix)" : Portugal’s Buraka Som Sistema play kuduro, a syncopated, skittish version of house music that originated in Angola and then disseminated into Lisbon and its suburbs. Over the past year or so—due in no small part to the efforts of Buraka—the sound has exploded around the globe, lodging itself into DJ sets of heads like Switch and Diplo and winning over fans like M.I.A. (with whom the group toured this year). The three dudes in Buraka have been relentless in their hustle, traveling and touring extensively and bringing the kuduro sound to unsuspecting ears everywhere. Here is their first video, which is for the song I played for y'all today...

3. Bonde De Role : "Awa Na Re" : Tony Allen's Lagos Shake Up : Lagos shakes indeed, in perfect sync with Tokyo, New York and Rio, among others. This all-star comp of remixes of Tony Allen songs confirms pretty much what one might expect about Blur's Damon Albarn: he's a regular cat, like you and me, in that if we had our own record label and relatively unlimited funds, we'd say, "huh, not much going on today, I think I'll take recordings from my favorite drummer and have a bunch of people remix them, if for no other reason than to add another cool record to my collection." And while there may not be much data as to how this comp came to be, a few listens create that effect, and in the best way possible. Honest Jon's has paired a number of established acts, as well as a few lesser known ones, with the work of an Afro-Beat legend, and the result bears considerable fruit. Including Brazil's Bonde De Role's tribal Baile cut here in this megamix.

4. MC Gringao : "Berimbau" : 'Gringao' (Portuguese for gringo/white guy)is the debut full length from MC Gringo, a guy who claims to be 100% Rio Baile Funk though he is 100% German. But it's good too, and a far cry from the slightly underwhelming slew of Brazilian-related releases recently every track is impeccably produced and has an energy that's impossible to ignore. You've got to hand it to MC Gringo and his collaborators for this heavy heady mix. Synth stabs, horns and otherwise cheesy latin samples are the order of the day, but everything is rolled together into an assertive and sometimes aggressive battle cry, something you can imagine calls people to arms in the Rio slums, but would just as happily work in a club.

5. Kotas (Supergroup) : "Força Angola (Afrobasket Angola2007)" : This is a special mainstream tune recorded for the Afrobasket Angola 2007(Angola's national basketball team) For the 2007 edition in conjunction with the African Championship held in Angola, a bunch of reputed old traditional Semba singers try it mixing harder new Kuduro with a soft Kuduro style. But, the new generation gives a helping hand, with some back vocals.

6. De Falla : "Propozuda Rock n'Roll" : Rio Baile Funk- Favela Booty Beats : another excellent Baile comp is where I found Baile legend De Falla rip this '80's rock tune into submission. Rock out!

7. Grandpamini : "Les Princes Du Tiers Monde" : Mash up star from Paris who specializes if Bass Music and umm...Kuduro in this case it seems. Here he works the genre with a French lyrical flavor that does Angola proud by revealing the continued rise in the style's international appeal. The title by the way, means "the princes of the 3rd world."

8. DJ Sujinhio : "Baile Rock" : Nossa :The tequila and cheeseburger fueled asthmatic Dance Music producer/Dj is one half the NOSSA DJ Tag Team... Music has always been dominate in Sujinho's life... The son of a West Indian Drummer Sujinho, Born Kienyo Timothy Coleman pretty much Bleeds broken beats. He was brought up and tortured in a catholic school where children were "angels that should be seen and only heard if singing". "I feel lucky, most people have to decide what they want to be in life. I've never had to make a choice. Music is all I am.". Turntablelab.com labeled Sujinho a "NYC vet". As a NYC DJ Suji holds court with a strong following of club goers that trust he will only book and play with the toughest gunners on the planet. True to his schizophrenic love of music, Suji's remixes absolutely defy genre and his hard textured, "mean beat-but beautiful" production style is unmistakably his own. It's a full emotionally direct sound that you can't get just because you own some equipment. Whether its Elecrto Rock,Hip-hop,Funk,Dance Hall,Juke Music,House,B-more, Freestyle, D'n'b, Baile Funk or country music. Sujinho brings a truckload of balls out energy to the dance floor every time. He has an energy that demands of crowds all over the globe to give it right back.....

9. DJ Znobia : "Tchilo (Diplo Mix)" : Don't know too much about this cut other than it's hot as hell and thaat sounds about right describing almost any Diplo-produced cut. I do Believe that Znobia is a member of the aforementioned Buraka Som Sistema and is a highly charged person amaing crowds the world over with his dedication to the young genre that kuduro really is.

10. M.I.A. : "Bird Flu/Guns Up Buraka" : MIA is a genius with global sounds, here she get the goods with a remix from the ever-hot Buraka Som Sistema on a cut from her latest album Kala

11. Frederic Galliano : "Mwana Tchouwa feat. Tony Amado" : Kuduro Sound System : Galliano was born and raised in Valance, southeast of France. Yet Africa, with its expanse and multitude, has always been a second home for this artist soul. He is educated in sculpture but abandoned that profession to instead concentrate on music. Before the debut album with “Frédéric Galliano: Espaces baroques” (1998), he worked as a dj within house and garage on the French scene. At that time dance remix was the most interesting thing. But he gradually passed to more experimental styles, such as abstract jazz and house that he remixed with African music. Year 2000, the record label Frikyiwa was founded by Frédéric Galliano. The kora king Ali Boulo Santo and the electronic musicians Lipitone and Louïs 2000 (who performed at Clandestino #3/2005) have released their album on this label, among many others. The unique thing with Gallianos approach is that he comes to the artists and records in the local place, instead of taking them to his studio. His intention is that the most interesting music comes from the countryside, and it should be taken care of right there. On this cut from the awesome kuduro comp he recently produced, is Tony Amado. Amado, is considered the creator of Angola’s “kuduro” music. The Luandan growler combined local instruments, techno beats and the strut of Jean-Claude Van Damme to invent a sound he baptised “hard ass” in Portuguese. That was back in 1991 and the singer from central Angola has not looked back since

12. Bonde Do Tiagro : "O Baile Todo" : Rio Baile Funk- Favela Booty Beats : Hard to resist, "Who Let The Dogs Out" in a Rio De Janeiro revision, 2 Live Crew would be proud.

13. Buraka Som Sistema : "Kalemba (Reso's Aguardiente Mix)" : exclusively online, this is the latest single from a crew discussed at length here, so this one is for the future your ear. Enjoy.

I'm sure many people have heard of Funk Carioca but perhaps not so much about its actual origins. In case Funk is new to you, I'll post a very short intro before getting into its origins.

Funk Carioca, also known as Brazilian Funk (which also relates to a 1970's musical style), Favela Funk and, elsewhere in the world, Baile Funk, is a type of dance music from Rio de Janeiro, derived from and superficially similar to Miami Bass, with deep rapid beats and aggressive vocals. In Rio de Janeiro it is most often simply known as Funk, although it is very different musically from what Funk means in most other places. As far as lyrics are concerned, the more recent Funk artists typically cram as many sexually explicit lyrics as possible into their songs a la style of Eazy-E, which is also typical of a similar more underground genre called Proibidão (Prohibited).

Origins

Brazilian record suppliers who went to the United States in the 1970s to buy what was called at the time "Black Music" for Brazilian DJs, targeted stores that sold American Funk records. As they continued to support the same hotspots over time, though American music had evolved away from Funk into new genres such as Hip Hop, the word "funk" stuck in local usage.

Miami was then a popular place to obtain records for Brazilian DJs, and therefore, Miami Bass was prominent in these imports. DJ Nazz and Tony Minister were the main suppliers credited to bringing Miami Bass records to Brazil while still referring to them as American funk records. Other local music producers began mimicking these importers in the late 1980s. The influence of Miami is also reflected in the prominence of freestyle-style synth melodies.

Even today, the funk carioca music played in clubs is dependent on a network of couriers used by DJs living in Rio. This is critical because the music these DJs play is not commercially available in Rio. These couriers periodically fly between New York and Miami to buy music. They return to Rio after short trips to resellers, who then provide DJs their music. Fierce competition exists between individual DJs in Rio, as each DJ wants his music to be the most popular and the most danceable.

Much like any kind of hip hop music, funk carioca relies heavily on samples and interpolations of other songs, as well as of pre-existent funk music. Much of the production occurs in small-scale studios in Rio, and achieve distribution through hand-burned CDs in the markets throughout Rio and all over Brazil, from São Paulo to the Amazônia region. One of the first funk carioca widespread hits was a remix of Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)" tune.

Besides Miami Bass-style beats, funk carioca also uses some traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms. A West Coast Electro Bass track entitled 808 Volt (Beatapella Mix) by DJ Battery Brain was widely sampled, and became the common background for various funk carioca songs, recycled time and again with the inclusion of more percussive elements as the "tamborzão" beat style became popular.

In recent years, Funk Carioca has been characterized within the popular imagination has having simple beats derived from cheap technologies with vocalists who tend to shout as much as they sing. The greatest export of this particular aesthetic revolves around the trio known as Bonde Do Role, who are a popular act in international hipster circles thanks to support from producer Diplo and significant coverage within the music media such as Rolling Stone.

The emergence of readily available digital music technologies in the early 90s changed the face the Funk Carioca movement in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Funk Carioca can be traced to many different musical genres ranging from Brazilian samba to European techno. Although Brazilian Funk started using mixed vinyl tracks that mimicked the scratch, loop and break techniques made famous by Bronx artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Miami Bass legends 2livecrew, the movement is currently almost exclusively digital. Beat machines and automated loop technology have revolutionized the genre.

The spread of Funk Carioca from an exclusively Rio based subculture to an international musical phenomena can largely be accredited to the influx of personal computers and internet technology in Brazil. Brazil is the global leader in Internet growth. “In Brazil, Internet use jumped 130% between from 1997-1998, and the Internet now constitutes a major industry with almost 1,300 ISPs, and somewhere between 5 and 6 million users”. So, while Funk maintains its favela roots and perspective, it has gained significant global listenership and recognition. Technology has increased musical plagiary in an already sample based genre and furthered the disregard for copyrights or musical ownership. Most Funk is mixed in home studios in the favelas and suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. This has resulted in a climate in which a new sample can become popular and spread through the dancehalls without officially crediting the artist. New digital technology combined with the social context and dancehall culture of Funk has resulted in one of the most piracy-driven music industries in the world. This trend has led to the limited opportunities of album sales and relegates the standard of success to DJ'ing at Friday or Saturday night dancehall events. Funk from Rio de Janeiro is a prime example of a new way in which music spreads in the modern globalized world. Catalyzed by the advance of music technologies, Funk marks a new trend that allows music that originates in a low wealth community to spread globally. In an article titled "The localization of Funk in Rio and Bahia", Livio Sansone notes “the stylistic mosaic varies when one can buy and store music or can only enjoy it live...” This, compounded by the lawlessness of the favelas, has caused almost complete disregard for music ownership or accreditation.

It seems my baile funk mix, From Rio To Toa Payoh has been getting love from all over the world wide web.

First up, Bassfaced.com, a leading dubstep blog/news site must have loved the mix so much to feature it on their website even though it's not a dubstep mix!

It was also an honour for me to be highlighted on RioBaileFunk which is one of, if not the best website out there catering strictly to Baile Funk/Funk Carioca music. This was where I get my resources and learn more about the music itself. So it was a blast when they featured my mix on it. Much love to DJ Rideon AKA Timo, the man running it!

Finally, neighbours and fellow electronic/dance music enthuasists, Foundation KL not only highlighted the mix but gave a flattering review to boot! Plus I love the comments! Props to Raj for the hook-up and Suffian Kamo for the recommendation!

Thanks to those who has highlighted the mix on their sites and much love to those who has linked it, downloaded it, listened to it and left comments on it. Will definitely drop more Baile Funk mixes in the near future!

C'est sous l'alias de Kubo que le novö-bass master Stereotyp nous propose un nouveau son oscillant entre afro-latin et dancehall, inauguré début 2007 avec le single "Uepa" sorti sur Funk Mundial.
Jeżeli przerażają Was ceny koncertów w ramach festiwalu Nowe Horyzonty lub szukacie imprezowej alternatywy na dwa gorące, lipcowe piątki G-punkt i PPS.NSMBL proponują:

EH MARINE PARTY!

EH MARINE startuje o 22, wjazd free.
