Wal-Mart Christmas Ornaments made in sweatshops.

This comes on the heels of a CNN report aired on December 13, 2007 of last year, when it was revealed that Wal-Mart Christmas Ornaments were made under deplorable conditions. Children ranging from ages of 12 to 16 years old, making 26 cents an hour which is half of China's minimum wage.

Business Week.com cites a new study released, which exposed Wal-Mart's auditing program failed to uncover that a supplier of children's wear are being produced in sweatshop conditions. The factory forced workers to lie to Wal-Mart inspectors about the working conditions. Wal-Mart has, of course, tried to hide this report from the public.

According to Business Week, "Wal-Mart acknowledges that it urged SweatFree Communities several times not to publish its report."

According to the study, "Sweatshop Solutions? Economic Ground Zero in Bangladesh and Wal-Mart's Responsibility," the factory forces workers to toil marathon 19-hour shifts from 8 am to 3 am in order to finish Wal-Mart orders with tight deadlines. "If any worker declines overtime, management harasses him or her mentally or physically," says Elina, a 22-year old factory helper. The report recounts one incident of a pregnant worker, who was refused leave, and forced to deliver her child inside the factory.

"In response to this report and pressure from our organization, Wal-Mart promises action to make this factory a model for others in Bangladesh," said Bjorn Claeson, Executive Director of SweatFree Communities, a worker rights organization that authored the report. "We welcome Wal-Mart's intervention. As one of the most powerful companies in the world with enormous presence in Bangladesh Wal-Mart could have a dramatic positive impact. But the company should recognize that its own low price demands and just-in-time production system is the root cause of sweatshop conditions. To bring about substantive changes in this factory and others, Wal-Mart must be willing to change its own demands."

According to the BusinessWeek story, Ruth Rosenbaum, executive director of CREA, a Hartford-based socioeconomic research center that focuses on human and labor rights, said "Wal-Mart has taken positive steps on environmental and sustainable issues, but when it comes to working on issues that question its purchasing practices or where its way of doing business would have to change, that's where things hit a wall."

"This report once again shows Wal-Mart's failed commitment to ethical sourcing," said Stacie Lock Temple, Sr. Director for Strategy and Communications for Wal-Mart Watch, a watchdog organization that monitors Wal-Mart's business practices. "If Wal-Mart and the Walton family were truly committed to improving worker conditions in factories such as this one, the company would be willing to change its excessive demands and spend the money required to ensure fair working conditions."

Another reason people should not shop at Wal-Mart. How many reports about sweatshop supplier practices and lawsuits about worker violations is it going to take to wake shoppers of Wal-Mart up? Every time you buy a product there, you are contributing, not only to child labor sweatshops in Bangladesh and China. But also, condoning the over 2,000,000 million employee violations and that is in just one current lawsuit. Wal-Mart and the Walton's have made billions off these kinds of practices - isn't it time to find another store to patronize?

Even though I started to write this quite a while back, I never got around to writing it in full. And today the point has already been made therfore this post is rahter reduntant.

That never really stopped me before and this time is not going to be any different in case you expect something different.

ICL has created two teams that have something in common. Both teams have a lot to prove and absolutely nothing to lose. While team Bangladesh has moved forward by winning agianst New Zealand, Dhaka Warriors are now fighting for their lives in ICL. So far, they have done quite a good job of it.

Why should we cheer for Dhaka Warriors?

They've given the cricket of Bangladesh a much needed thrashing. Cricketers, coaches and board execs needed a sudden wake up call from the state of complacency that they were in

Dhaka Warriors have made sure that BCB hunt for more talents. They've also made sure that people want to take up cricket as a career, because there are now other big money makers than just the national team

In the national team they didn't gave me anything to cheer about in the last year. Now they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I belive they'll play a much better game from now on

BD won against New Zealand after these guys left, for that alone, I am greatful. I really am!

And lastly, I'm happy to have two teams to cheer for.

Go Bangladesh!

Best of luck, Warriors!

Apparently local right wing extremists who inhabit the cesspit that is the British National Party were distraught when they heard that the BNP had been infiltrated by the Bangladeshi community.

Not renowned for their brain power, it took several meetings, phone calls and personal explanations by those that could read, before the local membership realised there was more than one BNP. Apparently the other one stands for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Mr Monkey wonders how these wankers would cope if they ever found out that there was more than one SS.

About a year ago, senior figures associated with Jamaat-e-Islami created a furore by making extremel

About a year ago, senior figures associated with Jamaat-e-Islami created a furore by making extremely provocative statements about Bangladesh's Liberation War - a war in which Jamaat's members actively fought against the country's independence, perpetrating some of the worst war crimes of that conflict along the way. Indeed, some of the very people making these statements themselves are alleged to be war criminals. The statement reignited the demands to bring the war criminals to a trial.

Here is a summary of the controversy. The reasons for Jamaat's offensive wasn't clear to me then (see here), and they're no more clear now. What is clear to me though is that people like Matiur Rahman Nizami or Ali Ahsan Mujahid — the party's two top ranking leaders — should be brought to justice for their actions in 1971. What is also clear to me is that the strategies — Shahrier Kabir's writings linking war crimes trial with secularism or the Sector Commanders' Forum's call for banning Jamaat — adopted by those seeking a trial are not going to work. In this post, I offer an alternative approach.

Let’s start with couple of inconvenient facts about our politics. First, parties that have never shown any interest in even talking about trying war criminals, parties representing the politics of ‘Bangladeshi nationalism and Islamic values’ have represented a majority of our voters since the mid-1970s. This means that as long as the demand to try war criminals remains limited to the opposing political camp, it remains a minority demand. Second, there is no 'good guys' in Bangladeshi politics when it comes to trying war criminals - no one has done it. So there is absolutely no reason to prefer one set of politicians over other.

This means that if we are serious about trying the war criminals, we have to create a coalition that includes both jatiyatabadis and Awamis. This can only happen if we realise the following: a demand for trying the war criminals is not the same thing as promoting secularism or the so-called Bengali nationalism; nor is it about combating Jamaat or political Islam per se; and it most definitely is not about Awami League or Gen Moeen’s political fortunes.

At this point, it is important to stress that by war crime we don't mean thought crimes. War criminals are those individuals who did real crimes against real people — they killed, raped and burnt in a systematic fashion — during the Liberation War. Their ideology is not the issue here. There perpetration of genocide and other such crimes are.

When I’ve raised this line of argument in different forums or in private conversation with people who passionately believe in the cause of the war crimes trial, I’m met with a common refrain: BNP/JP are non-secular, therefore they are not going to support the trial of war criminals, we'll be wasting our time inviting them to join the coalition.

I think this line of thinking is logically faulty because it makes the mistake of linking the trial of war criminals with secularism. Just because many of those seeking a trial also want to see a secular Bangladesh (however interpreted — a separate debate for another day) doesn’t mean that the trial of war criminals is the same thing as secularism. It's irrelevant whether BNP/JP are secular or not, or whether their interpretation of nationalism is different from the secular one. It is not at all clear that a BNP/JP supporter is ideologically opposed to a war crimes trial.

I'll go even further. I'll say that one can be Islamist — meaning that they want a theocratic state — but still demand a trial. Why? Because the crimes we are talking about — indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, systematic rape, arson — are contrary to basic Islamic tenets.

So logically, it is a non sequitur that BNP/JP types are not secular so they are against the trial of war criminals.

Having said all that, it is certainly the case that most BNP/JP supporters are sceptical of any talk of a trial. Those of us who so passionately seek a trial, and so vociferously demand one, should ask ourselves why is it the case that the majority of our voters who support BNP or JP do not demand a trial?

Part of the answer is that BNP/JP have benefited from the support of war criminals. But then, so has Awami League — the party a majority of those seeking a trial identify with. The difference between AL and BNP/JP here is one of degree, not kind. Once again, that AL has a formal commitment to secularism and BNP/JP doesn't, or that AL and BNP/JP differ in their interpretation of nationalism, these are not the issue here.

A more important reason, in my opinion, is that the first Khaleda government found itself in a confrontational position with those seeking a trial, whereas the issue remained dormant during the AL years. I'll not wade into the AL-BNP argument here, but consider the issue from the perspective of a BNP voter: 'isn't it suspicious that this whole thing keeps coming up at times to bludgeon us politically?' — I think the BNP voter has a right to feel cynical about it.

And at the same time, if those of us seeking a trial pin our colours to the AL mast, if we say that 'anyone who sincerely wants war criminals be punished cannot belong to any of these parties because they are not secular' — don't we just confirm the BNP voters' cynicism?

This then sets off a vicious cycle. If you are a BNP/JP supporter who in principle supports the trial, you'd have to think thrice before voicing your opinion. Why? Because doing so would mean supporting AL. And if you're an AL leader, you've got it really easy — you can rely on the trial supporters to vote for you, so you don't actually have to deliver: ora aar koi jabe, election-e to nouka tei vote dibe, oder vote niye chinta nai, borong dekhi kemne BNP'r vote komano jai.

And why wouldn't AL think this way? They are in the business of winning elections. If I was running AL, I too would do the same. So the net result is that AL will have little incentive to actually deliver on the trial, BNP/JP will see any demand for trial as an AL tactical ploy, and a trial will never happen.

When you think about it this way, AL’s attitude to meet or not to meet Jamaat becomes crystal clear. It’s all about winning the election, stupid.

Now let’s consider an alternative strategy that is compatible with both the electoral preferences of our voters and the election strategies of our parties.

Suppose there is an awareness campaign that highlights the war crimes. Not secularism, not the interpretation of nationalism — important as those issues are — but war crimes. The efforts by Muktijuddho Jadughar are examples of what I have in mind, except that these reach only a fraction of our population. So let there be an awareness campaign that reaches the millions outside Dhaka. Let this awareness campaign establish that there were real war crimes — not ideological or intellectual differences, but real crimes against real people and property. Let these awareness campaigns pin point the individuals who perpetrated those crimes. Not political parties, not ideologies, but real criminals — Nizami, Mujahid, SQ Chowdhury etc.

If we can convince the majority of the people about the crimes and criminals, the battle is half won. Once Nizami/Mujahid/SQ Chowdhury become political liabilities, no one will court them for votes. It will be much easier then to convince the government of the merits of a trial. If nothing else, their elimination from the political scene will be a benefit in itself. If it is really the case that AL leadership is sincere about holding the trial, it will be easier to do so in an environment where there is a broad agreement about the trial across the party line. And that will never happen so long as the trial is identified as a pure AL issue.

And once a trial is held, once Nizami is found guilty by a transparent justice system, it will be well nigh impossible for a future government to rehabilitate these criminals.

If anyone thinks that this is not practical, I present precedence from our recent history: trial of the killers of the Sheikh family.

Far more than the war criminals, BNP/JP politics benefited from the murder of Sheikh Mujib. Had he lived, it is quite unlikely that the BNP/JP politics would have appeared in the form that it did, let alone thrive. BNP/JP had never shown any interest in bringing the killers to justice. AL, for its part, spent a lot of effort in the 1980s to monopolise Mujib (and BNP/JP for their part spent much time trying to marginalise him).

But then something changed in the 1990s. Mujib and AL were allowed to decouple. When the house in Rd 32 Dhanmondi was opened as a museum for the public, a new generation learnt that a heinous crime was committed on 15 August 1975. The result is that there is a near consensus that the massacre of the Sheikh family was a tragedy and the killers should be punished.

And then when AL returned to power in 1996, they wisely chose to concentrate on the killers and the key conspirators: Khondoker Mushtaq and the majors. As a result, Farooq-Rashid-Dalim, who were courted by Ershad in 1987, became political pariahs by the 1990s. Even the BNP-Jamaat government couldn't gather enough political will to pardon the killers.

If instead AL had concentrated on the broader ideological significances of the coups of 1975, if they had said all those who support BNP are beneficiaries of the massacre and thus should be tried, if they had kept the trial of those killers a purely AL issue, we'd probably have seen Col Farooq become a minister in the second Khaleda government!

The lesson here is not that ideological issues don't matter. They do. But they should not be mixed up with the trial of war criminals. If we are serious about the trial, then let's build awareness and a coalition so that not having a trial becomes politically impossible.

Infiltration in Assam gets a religious hue
Rajesh Sinha, Friday, October 10, 2008

GUWAHATI: For the first time in Assam, the resentment against immigrants and Bangladeshi infiltrators is wholly directed at Muslims in general. People in the riot-hit areas do not talk of migrant Muslims or Bangladeshi infiltrators any more. Be it Muslims or people of other faiths the conversation here is about ‘Muslims’ and ‘the others’. They do, however, agree that the root cause was infiltration — an indictment of the government’s failure to check it.

Bodos at a relief camp in Rauwta, Darrang district, said Muslims from the area attacked them and set their houses on fire in retaliation against a campaign to send Bangladeshi Muslims, and not Assamese Muslims, back.

Their explanation: the Assamese Muslims have developed social relations and marriage alliances with the Bangladeshis who live alongside them in Muslims localities. This was bound to happen if the Bangladeshis were allowed to settle down here, the refugees add. “They are all the same now, and they attacked all non-Muslims,” said a young man at the camp.

A stony silence greeted tribal affairs minister Promila Rani Brahma, a Bodo herself, when she urged refugees at a relief camp to go back to their villages. No one took her promise to ensure security seriously. Villagers said they dared not leave the camp, as people were dragged out of buses and killed. Many such tales were rumours, but the fear was real.

Tension is palpable here. Driving along the road one comes across rows upon rows of burnt down houses and sheds, damaged farm equipment and completely abandoned villages.

Fear reigns also at a Muslim relief camp some kilometres from the one the minister visited. Thousands of Muslims are living there. One of them, clearly an Assamese Muslim, said his village was sandwiched between Bodo villages on both sides. The Bodos had been threatening them and asking them to leave - or face consequences, he said.

According to him, the Bodos waited till Eid, on October 2, and then attacked them on Friday, October 3.

Locals also complain that Bangladeshi infiltrators have changed the indigenous Muslim population in one way. Earlier it was difficult to distinguish between Assamese Hindus and Muslims. But now the Muslims’ trademark skull cap, long kurtas and lungis has compounded the “We vs They” crisis.

Freemuse programme manager Ole Reitov will join world famous author Taslima Nasrin in a conference on freedom of expression. Taslima Nasrin has received several death threats from religious fundamentalists in her home country Bangladesh and now lives in exile in Sweden, hosted by one of Sweden’s ‘Safe Cities’, Uppsala.

Development in Bangladesh is usually segregated into two broad contextsurban and rural. However, between these two defined areas lie many market places and growth centres which do not fall within either category and are therefore escaping the eyes of the development planners.

In Bangladesh, the exact number of hats or bazaars is not known to me at this moment but it is clear to us that there is at least one hat or bazaar within walking distance of everyone in Bangladesh.

[...]

Despite the large transient populations water and sanitation facilities in hats and bazaars are negligible. People are forced to openly defecate and urinate close to food stores, with little opportunities to wash hands. Where latrine opportunities are available there is seldom any specific facilities for women. Solid waste management is generally absent.

[...]

The country strategy which aims for "total sanitation" [covering all parts of the country with sanitation facilities] and "sanitation for all" [no one will be left out from sanitation service and facilities] by the year 2010 will be ignoring a large component if hats and bazaars are not properly included. Despite investing a lot of money and a huge effort given by government and non-government agencies large populations will be facing high risks of contracting the water and excreta borne diseases.

Best Laptops Under $500
By Nick Mokey, Digital Trends

Lenovo ThinkPad R61e
$487.69

Although ThinkPads have a reputation for being pricier premium notebooks intended for business travelers, a little smart shopping can land you this budget model on a shoestring. It's not as fast as the flagship T-series, or as light as the X-series, but the R61 has been reviewed favorably in its price range and includes many of the same features Lenovo rolls into those pricier ThinkPads. When ordering, make sure to choose the second-from-cheapest model to get an Intel Dual Core processor rather than a Celeron M (a bargain upgrade for only $32 more tacked onto the final price). Also make sure to select the cheapest Windows Vista option to sneak in under the $500 mark. The coupon code USP3PAYPAL will take an extra 15 percent off when ordering from Lenovo, lowering the notebook to $487.69.

Organize Your MP3s Like a Pro

Dell Vostro 1000
$399.99

Dell's bottom-of-the-line notebook won't turn any heads, or win any head-to-head benchmark comparisons, but its $399 starting price makes it impossible to ignore. Since this isn't from a sale, mark-down or coupon, you're also free to add the options you really need. For instance, laying out $25 for the Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor instead of the Sempron would be wise. But travelers beware: A starting weight of 6.26 pounds makes it heavy by modern standards, and the AMD's heat output will also make it a battery killer, so you may wish to look elsewhere if you'll be taking it anywhere besides around the home and office.

Acer Aspire AS4315-2535
$459.90

Looking for something a little smaller than the 15.4-inch notebooks that normally seem to hit the bargain bin? This Acer falls one notch down on the size and weight scale, making it a little more portable for the on-the-go user. However, in exchange for the 14.1-inch screen and 5.7 pound weight, you'll sacrifice some performance by moving to a single-core Intel Celeron processor. If you're the type of person who imagines using a laptop to surf the Web in a coffee shop or tap out documents on a plane, you probably won't notice much of a difference, though, and may favor the portability.

Gateway T-6815
$499.99

The priciest notebook in our roundup may be refurbished, but that's the only thing
moving this otherwise well-equipped notebook into the sub-$500 category. It gets the fastest processor, Intel's vaunted Core 2 Duo, and the largest hard drive, 160GB. With a 14.1-inch screen and weight of only 5.55 pounds, you're also looking at the lightest machine on our list. Individual opinions on refurbished items vary, but if you're willing to trust Gateway's recertification team, you can land a laptop comparable to far pricier units for much less cash. Just remember: the manufacturer's warranty lasts 90 days, so be sure to put it through its paces before you run out of time to discover potential problems.

Compaq C700T
$479.99

Compaq's cheapest notebook doesn't stand out too far from the crowd, but it makes a nice option for those who don't want to be bothered filling out rebates, using coupons, or chasing sales. You get a no-nonsense machine with a 1.73GHz Intel Dual-Core Processor, 1GB of RAM, and an 80GB hard drive. Spectacular? Not really, but you can snag one any time, and Compaq will allow you to round it out with whatever options you need. The only drawback would be the machine's 6.4-pound weight, which makes it even more of a desk anchor than Dell's cheaper (and slower) Vostro 1000.

As an entrepreneur here in the USA I see the recent wall st problem the following way. I want to mention that a large part of of my view of market and money has been shaped by Peter Schiff. My view may differ from main stream outlets.

PROBLEM #1: Problem is not the run on the banking industry. Everybody's deposit is safe other than FREDDIE MAC bank. The problem is said to be unavailability of CREDIT. Please take note - NOT the unavailability of LIQUIDITY rather unavailability of CREDIT caused this so-called crisis.

PROBLEM #2: Investors are not trusting the market with their investment anymore. So there is a underlying panic situation which is why stock dived 27% last one year. The gov action was necessary to RESTORE investors' confidence back to the market. Well, it is a never before tested action gov took which may or may not live up to its agenda. The odd of this action to be working no more than 50%.

PROBLEM #3: Everything has a life time. When something become too old it will die. There is no example in human history of something existing for infinite time. Some of the market instruments specially investment banking systems which exist in wall street like Lehman Bros, Morgan Stanly, AIG are more than 100 years old. But none of the investors in today's market are that old. The IDEA of WEALTH and ASSETS has changed in last 25 years completely. These old instruments clearly failed to keep up with the demands of todays investors and market.
For example, it was always profitable idea from 1780 to 1980 to try to control and manipulate the market. Market was much smaller and less diverse. But today's market is huge and extremely diverse. It is not possible for a single instrument, like investment banking, to control the market. These companies tried to play with a 200 years old game. Market reacted and refused to be controlled.

Here are some results we are seeing.

RESULT #1: Massive dislocation of assets. The US is no longer the ABSOLUTE financial powerhouse of the world. It will remain the most dominant financial powerhouse but not the absolute one. Please keep in mind that there is no other place in the world where society is such innovative and entrepreneurial like the USA.

RESULT #2: World is at a hyper inflationary point now. Just like too much medicine for an old patient. Dollar along with other currencies have less value to hard assets. I believe world is having a 10% inflation today which, I think, is extremely dangerous because it can take the entire world into a 7 to 10 year of economic slow down. Either way, next two years will very tough for the poor people of the world as consumer spending slows down in western hemisphere.

RESULT #3: Loan is very un-available now. Nobody seems to have money to loan anyone. The base of market economy was established with loan guarantee. That seems to be gone for forseeable future. Loan to people, loan to businesses and loan to poor countries are tight right now.
