SELINSGROVE (Pa.) - Larry R. Squire, recognized internationally for his research of the organization and neurological foundations of memory, will speak Oct. 8 at Susquehanna University. His talk, titled Conscious and Unconscious Memory Systems of the Mammalian Brain, is free and open to the public and begins at 8 p.m. in Degenstein Center Theater.Squire's presentation will consider how memory is not a single faculty function of the mind but is composed of distinct systems. Recent research has helped to identify these structures, their operating characteristics and how they support learning and memory. The lecture is part of the Claritas Distinguished Speaker in the Sciences Series, sponsored by the School of Natural and Social Sciences.

Squire, a professor of psychiatry, neurosciences and psychology at the University of California, San Diego, is recognized internationally for his research investigating the organization and neurological foundations of memory. His work has involved the study of neurological patients, neuro-imaging, nonhuman primates and rodents, and combines the traditions of cognitive science and neuroscience. His publications include more than 400 scientific research articles, a widely-read book Memory and Brain (Oxford Press, 1987), and Memory: From Mind to Molecules, with Eric Kandel (W.H. Freeman, 1999). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Institute of Medicine.

Unigo’s 225 launch schools were chosen to represent a cross-section of colleges and universities across the country. They weren't selected based on any ranking system or special process -- they're meant to offer variety, with schools large and small, public and private, and located around the country.

Why not start with all the colleges in the US? We determined that 225 was the largest number our 18 editors would be able to handle while giving the schools the attention they deserve. Our quality control process required that we read through the surveys on the site, and considering the fact that we received over 15,000 surveys (some as long as 5 pages!), that was no small undertaking. The bottom line: Unigo didn't want to sacrifice the quality of the content on the site in the name of quantity.

It was also important to make sure that the site would function optimally and to work out the kinks before we shift into the next phase, when we'll add schools to our roster. One benefit to all this is that for next phase schools, the website will have additional functionality, including blogs and forums.

We're working to activate new schools as soon as possible. We'll keep you posted!

The Guardian in association with the Learning and Skills Council have produced a supplement highlighting how better buildings are transforming further education in England. Since 200, the year that Labour set up the LSC the government has contributed £2.4 billion for college buildings and a further £2.3 billion has been committed up to 2010.

The supplement examines issues such as green buildings; college building design and how spending on further education benefits regional and national economies. There are also case studies of various colleges.

Colleges in Wales may look upon this situation with some envy, particlarly those who have embarked upon building projects by taking out loans, mortgages or attempting to save money from other areas. However, in the early years of the LSC, colleges in England were also required to find the bulk of the money for capital projects.

The supplement was issued in Tuesday's Guardian 30.09.08

Sport, waaronder golf maakt hongerig.

Rick Verhagen, prof. Dennis Faber of Mr. drs. Richard Nowak.

American college applications are a strange beast. I considered applying to a few US colleges before

American college applications are a strange beast. I considered applying to a few US colleges before but the sheer number of alien acronyms, requirements, and costs (not to mention the fact that I would theoretically be a "transfer" but wanted to start over) gave me too much of a headache. It is a wonder sometimes that there are international students in the US tertiary system at all!

Writer and general busy bee Su Ann, also known as PinkPau, went through this herself last year and has succeeded in getting herself a spot in a top US university (I believe Columbia but I could be mistaken). She has helpfully provided a comprehensive guide to US applications for Malaysian students, whether fresh out of secondary school or in pre-university programs. This first part of her guide also includes a sample resume for the applications (don't let the sheer number of achievements scare you!), as well as a sample fee waiver letter - really useful as US college applications can go higher than US$50 each and many people typically apply to a few at once.

Su Ann will publish a few more guides, including one on writing the application essays. She's also happy to answer questions till January, the end of application deadlines.

Asking a qualified college counselor experienced in US colleges is the ideal option, as is contacting the university, but Su Ann has a very friendly peer perspective and definitely makes a great start. I wish I had her guides three years ago!

So it seems as if I've engaged myself in a little bit of a "war" with some proponents of the College Sports Council.

To recap, I posted a few days ago on how the College Sports Council et. al. need to get their facts right before trashing Title IX and the recent Women's Sports Foundation report on gender in college athletics.

Apparently, my opinion was not digested very well with the CSC and their community of... I don't want to say "woman-haters," so I guess I shall say... "Title IX-haters?"

So today, "Stone Cold Button" of the Texas Swimming Blog - whose tagline is Nuke the Whales, but Save the Males! Title IX hurts men's swimming (& wrestling) - decided to, um, "critique" my recent blog post by writing a response titled Talk Sense to a Fool, where he proceeded to highlight and recap my conversation with a commentor.

So, here is my response to Stone Cold Button:

In your post you said, ""Sure, you have more opportunities as long as you don't mind switching sports and being a third-string punter."

You're exactly right. The problem is not Title IX, it's football.

Listen, I agree with you in that men should have the opportunity to swim and do gymnastics and wrestle, etc. But not at the expense of Title IX. You're pointing the finger in the wrong place.

Why are you (male swimmers) attacking women sports, when we are also on the losing end of athletic departments' decisions about how to allocate resources and opportunities? If you had any balls at all, you'd go after football and the fact that colleges value third string punters more than they value men's swimming.
Also, it was the men's sports lobby that invented proportionality prong, by the way. Back when men outnumbered women in college, it seemed like an easy way to comply without having to add a whole lot of women's sports.

But now that the shoe is on the other foot and women outnumber men, you cry about it?
