Last month in NYC the first U.S. Pictoplasma festival took place, and was a great success. It is a festival celebrating the world community of creative character design. I've always loved character design, from the time I was making little cat statues out of Fimo, to when I was in fourth grade drawing characters on the back of my grandma's business cards (inspired by Mary Engelbright, so 80's), to all the money I spent on various character's products at the Sanrio store.

While I was late to the party learning about this festival, I did follow all the blogging, articles and twitters on it while it was going on. Uber-talented people and speakers participated, and there is an amazing Pictoplasma Flickr Set and discussion group about the festivals, which take place all over the world.

It's so inspiring, but I get so lost in looking at everything, it can also be time consuming! Enjoy!

I really didn’t even think about it until I got to D.C., until my boss asked me,

I really didn’t even think about it until I got to D.C., until my boss asked me, “So what do you want to do, here?” Suddenly I responded, “Well, I’d really like to go see the Hmong-Lao memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.” It must’ve come out of my sub-consciousness, because right after I said it I thought to myself, “Yeah, I really would like to go see it.”

She and I were in D.C. for a conference, and we had some time before our flight out to do some sight-seeing. However as suddenly as I had responded that I had wanted to go, I hesitated. Maybe it was just my nerves, but for a moment there I was actually scared to go see the memorial in person. After a few moments of reflection I made up my mind that I had to go see it, because I was already there in D.C. and who knows if, or when, I’d get another chance to come back. So we made arrangements to stop by on our way to the airport. While in the taxi I finally realized that this wasn’t a dream, and that I was really on my way to Arlington National Cemetery to see the Hmong-Lao memorial.

You must understand that I’m a very passionate character, looking back now, this simple detour to the airport amounted to somewhat of a pilgrimage for me. All my life I’ve done as much as I can to achieve the hopes and dreams that my parents have set forth for me. I’ve done as much as I can to learn about the wonderful culture and heritage that I belong to. I’ve done as much as I can to honor the struggles and sacrifices of those who came before me. So you must understand that for me, it was an opportunity that I’ve never had before, a chance to pay my respects to all of the Hmong men, women, and children who gave their lives for Freedom’s cause during the CIA’s Secret War in Laos.

Walking up the road to the memorial there were white gravestones as far as the eye could see. My boss and I walked up together through groups of tourists, and school children. We noted the other memorials that looked similar to the one we were looking for, all modest, blocks of concrete with square, bronze plaques on the top. When we found ours, it was covered with grass trimmings, probably from workers mowing around it. After brushing them away with our hands, we stood there for a few seconds in silence. Then my boss took my picture next to the memorial. I put my left hand at the top of the memorial, and held a pin of Arlington National Cemetery that I had bought at the gift shop in my right hand. We took another picture just of the memorial and then I said a few words of grace before we made our way back to our taxi.

It was the absolute purest spiritual experience of my life, and I just wanted to share it with you. Hopefully you'll get to see it in person also, one day soon, if you haven't already.

In case any of you have plans for going to the first NeuroPsychoEconomics conference in Munich this Thursday and Friday, let me know. Or if you're just in the vicinity, you can also let me know. Neuroethicists and cognitive neuroscientists alike (as well as every else interested in this blog) should probably meet whenever possible.

The plan is to give a talk entitled something like "Individual biological differences and models of value-based decision making" (PDF). which hopefully will also soon be out as an article. Comments are of couse welcome. Here is the abstract teaser:

Neuroeconomics is the scientific, multidisciplinary study of value-based decision making. Recent advances in methods and findings in cognitive neuroscience have gained attention and influence on our understanding of the basic mechanisms of behaviour. With the advent of two new paradigms in cognitive neuroscience – imaging genetics and the cognitive neuroscience of ageing – the focus of brain-behaviour research is turning towards the study of normal variation and individual differences. As such, insights from these approaches hold the promise to provide a more detailed account of value-based decision making. In addition, this understanding may provide the means to induce short-term and reversible alterations in decision behaviours. In this paper, we present and discuss these insights and how they may inform the neuroeconomic study of decision making.

On October 16th, All Day Buffet is hosting The Feast, which they're dubbing a social innovation conference. The Feast will feature 150 of the world's leading creative mavericks, entrepreneurs, revolutionaries, radicals, and innovators together to inspire action to change the world. Jerri Chou, of All Day Buffet was kind enough to answer a few questions regarding their inspiring event.

What is the main concept behind social innovation?

Social innovation has many related and overlapping definitions, but the main concept behind it is innovations which have a social purpose. That means changing the fabric and DNA of how we do everything from entrepreneurship, to financial, education, policy, and even how nonprofits and corporations function to take into account and result in social benefits.

For us, creativity is inherent in social innovation, since ideas are naturally creative--drawing upon past questions, answers, emotions in developing new ways of looking at the world. Much like the private sector is known for innovation with companies such as Google and Apple, we believe that the social sector needs the same.

Your organization has pioneered events such as Cause for Drinks, which pairs social action with social events. In this context giving becomes almost effortless and fun. In this vein, many of your speakers have developed products that use design to highlight and solve global concerns such as sustainability and clean water. What do you think the role of design is in social innovation?

As Bruce Mau said about his Massive Change Project "It's not about the world of design. It's about the design of the world." Design plays a huge role in how we see and interact with our world. Much of that comes from years of evolution and the signals, learning's, and innate way we draw from the natural world. But I think the Massive Change project really hits the nail on the head when it says that design has never been more powerful and is "increasingly understood in a much wider sense as the human capacity to plan and produce desired outcomes." In that sense, design's role is the literal answer to "how" we fix problems of social innovation. Of course, with that, we have to also understand its and our own limitations, which is really where the thorough exploration of design's potential is necessary. One of the speakers at The Feast, Elizabeth Johansen from IDEO, will be speaking about "Design for Social Impact" which will go over how design has the potential to create transformational change in underserved and disadvantaged communities.

Do you think that innovators need both good ideas and good design to inspire others?

Not only that, they need good execution. They're all inextricably linked. One without the other is dead in the water. You can't innovate without a good idea, you can't execute a good idea without good design, and good design without a good idea is just something pretty you put on your desktop (virtual or otherwise). And in the end, a good idea or design without action is just a nice afterthought.

What do you think The Feast's role will be in spurring innovative ideas to solve global concerns?

I think The Feast's role is really to bring together all these disparate groups who never really get a chance to meet and exchange ideas and learning. Most conferences are so specific. They're all about corporate social responsibility, or green marketing, which is great. You can definitely learn a lot of specifics at those kind of events but we wanted to cross-pollinate. Nonprofits are coming because they're interested in hearing Scott Belsky speak about productivity, and designers are coming because they're fascinated by the scientific theories of Dr. Despommier. There are so many overlapping threads within all the groups represented. This is the chance for them to weave together their knowledge into something really powerful, collaborative and beautiful. And for those who haven't tried a social venture, it's inspiring to see what's possible.

The Feast takes place on October 16th at Scandanavia House in NYC. I hope to see some of you there.

We had a fantastic conference weekend! Brigham's parents came for the weekend and we made some great memories! Here is the final scene of the Thrillionaires show we attended Saturday night after priesthood session.

We enjoyed the four sessions of conference with a burning fire, way too much food, great family bonding and lots of APPLES! It's harvest time at our house and we've got apples EVERYWHERE! So blessed with abundance!

I meant to send this out to friends and family prior to conference and never did. Well, here it is-a kid packet for conference. Maybe it could be used as a review of conference somehow for tonight's FHE.

By Elliot Hales

Stephen Covey spoke Friday at a multi-school Honor Code and CES conference.

Covey is best known for his work with the Franklin Covey organization and his best-selling book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People."

In the first event of its kind, Covey spoke to CES administrators and student association leaders from BYU, BYU-Hawaii, BYU Idaho and LDS Business College.

Covey's thoughts centered on an individual's divine origin and potential and the potentially negative effects of society on development. He compared the process to a kind of identity theft.

"The great identity theft is the cultural DNA," Covey said. "It's the overlay of the culture people are raised in that obscures their true identity as children of God."

Weaving together principles found in his book, Covey told students of the importance of finding solutions to their problems based on three great spiritual examples: The home and temple, the process of restoring the gospel and the life of our Savior.

Covey compared the task of finding solutions to the job of a physician and warned attendees to diagnose problems before assigning prescriptions.

Brad Graham, president of the Student Honor Association, said he appreciates the chance to learn leadership, teaching, being effective and leading with the Spirit.

"It's an opportunity for the church schools to be taught and to collaborate to better serve their student bodies," Graham said.

Jamie James, human resources director for the Student Honor Association, said he was impressed with the personal nature of the speech from a man accustomed to much larger audiences.

"He did a great job personalizing it all on a spiritual level," James said. "It's great to get ideas of how to help students abide the honor code."

The speech came a week before the Student Honor Association prepares to publicize their "respect" campaign, a campaign that will be greatly influenced by the remarks of Covey and the proceedings of the conference, James said.

Covey taught previously at BYU and prefaced his remarks by sharing with attendees what he missed most was "interacting with the students."

I did a short piece six months ago on the IMS Rich Communication Suite. Last week I was speaking at

I did a short piece six months ago on the IMS Rich Communication Suite. Last week I was speaking at the IMS 2.0 and RCS conference in Amsterdam. So here's a brief update, along with some general colour from the conference itself.

First off - the conference. It was pretty good - a three day event, with a good mix of operators, vendors and various unclassifiables like myself. I'd guess 150-200 people in total, with good attendance through the days. Format was a mix if speaking slots and panels, and overall it was very interactive, with good engagement between those on the stage and those in the audience. That always makes for a good conference, as you tend to get more from discussion than lecture. This is true also of the coffee breaks and lunches - where often some of the best information and learning occurs.

Now - on to RCS itself. I am now officially worried about it. At a high level, that's because the Telecom Industry process struggles to move at speed.

[Rant alert]

In this case, RCS was kicked off in late 2007, and is still hoping to be in real phones (as an implemented standard) in 2009. If it did this, it would be a minor miracle in itself, as that's FAST in telco-land. This is because you have to get multiple stakeholders: operators/carriers, handset-players, and equipment and various software providers to agree (via a standard) on a common agenda and move from specification to implementation via comprehensive interop-testing in as short a time as possible. Often, that short time is three years. So as I say, 2009 would be a good result.

However, it's just not fast enough any more. Right now, people are being actively educated about presence, availability and messaging, not by Orange, or Vodafone, but by Skype, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, among others. They don't call it presence, or whatever. You just find your buddies and set your status. By the time the first RCS-enabled handsets are out, many, many users will also have become used to using these in a mobile setting: using fring or Truphone on the iPhone, or Nokia phones, or others.

My point is, when RCS ships, one of the first and valid questions from every target user will be: Does it work with my [AIM ; Google ; MSN ; Yahoo ; Skype] buddy list? No?

Um, FAIL, as the trend is to say now :-)

Seriously: people won't be asking: can I see everyone's status on my phone book and does it interoperate across carriers and is it free of roaming charges. Just - does it work with what I've already been doing for 2, 3 or perhaps 5+ years. If the answer is no, then the service has a major adoption problem that is not being addressed. Google, Yahoo and the others need to be supportive of RCS. Someone from the relevant body needs to be talking to them now and finding a win-win between RCS and their services (and I think there are some).

[Rant over]

So - back to the conference. it really was very good - there was excellent discussion around IMS and RCS, and candid questions (such as the above interop issue with the Internet Giants) were asked and discussed, even if no conclusive answers were found. The progress on the standards work has been fast by industry peer standards. I genuinely think that the RCS initiative has a chance of succeeding, and I applaud its attempt to ensure that rich interoperable services work day one on our cool new handsets in late 2009. I'm just concerned that this will end up being too little, too late, and that the Internet players will have scorched the Earth well before then, and moved on to the next battle.

The slides from our talk at the conference are here.

LearnTel Events announces the upcoming video conference entitled "Extending the Classroom: Open Content and Open Teaching" by George Siemens, and invites all interested to take part in the online discussion forum before and after the conference. Excerpt:

Information and communication technology has fundamentally changed the relationship between teacher and learner. The teacher is no longer the sole provider and mediator of educational resources. High quality content - often produced by prominent institutions and renowned academics - is at the finger tips of anyone with an internet connection. Additionally, learners can participate in learning networks and online communities, also reducing the central role educators have in the conversation around curriculum.

How do these two trends change the roles of teacher and learner? This session will explore how trends in ICT impact education through the lens of social learning theory. Discussion will focus on emerging metaphors and models for learning in a globally networked world.

I didn't get the scholarship to IDEA, but I'm going anyway! When will I ever be a 4 hour trainride away again? It's going to be a fantastic time...I'll go with my friend from school, Chris Hanrath, a German who used to work for one of the major sponsors of the event [sapient].

We're going to take megabus on the way there and the train on the way back, and I'll be staying in a hostel for the first time in 8 years (perhaps with all the other traveling Germans) (but Germans love me, so it's ok).

People are surprised that I'm skipping school to go to the conference, but I couldn't pass up the chance to immerse myself in my potential future professional world.

Boy, it has been forever! We have so much to discuss. But first, this sports report.

The East Paulding MS Raiders were defeated by the South Paulding MS Panthers 19-38 in play on Saturday. Sperm had limited play mainly on punt/kickoff return. EPMS just did not come to play missing numerous opportunities. Plus, the referees called a poor game missing several key calls involving potentially injury-inducing tackles. His father did shout a lot and lost the majority of his voice. The Raiders are 3-2 going into their final game with McClure MS on the road this Saturday.

And I would be remiss if I did not mention the #20 Team FINALLY won at Talledega six second-place finishes. It appeared Tony would have to take second again after a pass from the 6 car however, the 6 passed illegally below the yellow line to gain position and was forced to 18th after a penalty. Go Tony and #20! I am glad he was able to get that win. Let's hope he gets the opportunity to visit Victory Lane next year as part of the #14 team. Also, Goodyear once again had issues related to tires. I said it a while back and I'll say it again - FIRE GOODYEAR! (Somebody must be providing some good p**** or c*** to someone at NASCAR for GoodYear to be around this long!)

Yes, despite the fact I was having a beer in a bar in Augusta, GA, I still watched the Palin-Biden debate on Thursday. Frankly, I saw nothing in the debate that persuaded me to vote one way or the other. However, I will say the following: the word "maverick" is now annoying; Biden's eye-tuck and/or facelift looks goofy - sort of like Joan Rivers; Palin's constant "hockey mom" persona is a bit boring now. I was going to early vote, but I think I will wait.

And speaking of Augusta, the conference went very well. I was able to make some new friends, hear some good discussions, and enjoy the nightlife. Oh, and I got a great run in with one of my friends. We ran along the riverwalk on the South Carolina side of the river. We estimated 5-6 miles and I think the best thing for me was that I was able to keep up with my friend who has run a marathon! But one observation -- please teach people how to give presentations and not read everything from the f-ing slides! How boring! Overall though - a great conference.

We are "borrowing" an idea from NECC for the first time this year as well. We call it (with apologies) Blogger's Corner. The concept is for a comfortable, informal place for people to get together and network, brainstorm and learn. During the two days of the conference we will also offer some "mini" session (about a half hour long) on things that don't get touched in the conference or are just not big enough to warrant a full hour session. We hope that the extra opportunity to learn and the relaxed environment will encourage people to come. I guess we will find out! The first one is at 11am today. I don't expect more than a person or two, but it's a first time thing so hopefully it will go.

I'm sitting in my presentation room now waiting for my first session of the day. I'm presenting on our new tool for online classes called Adobe Connect. It's a great tool but it is replacing a tool everyone is used to so there is bound to be a little resistance. Hopefully this presentation will grease the wheels a bit. After this one is over I am all about Web 2.0 for the rest of the conference. Intro to Web 2.0, Twitter, Social Bookmarking and RSS are the rest of my sessions. After the dust clears I am going to try to post all of my presentations (and hopefully those of my counterparts) on a Wikispaces site. I will give it to you when I set it up. If I forget, feel free to remind me!

We are exactly 30 days from the National Conference! Y'all better make sure you register on time (and save yourselves $25)! I can't wait to see you there (it'll be my first conference, National or Regional... so I'm stoked).

On other news, this week, I'll be putting up a couple more pictures (admittedly, I'm plugging the UPR Section). I'd like to see what your sections are doing (and I'm sure the whole Region would love to see what you're up to, as well).

And, as they say in Puerto Rico, lo prometido es deuda (what you promise, you owe): I've started off this week with a post from Ashley Malinowski - one of Region D's SWEFLs (SWE Future Leaders).

Enjoy! And y'all have a SWEet week!
