La Mata - Costa Blanca

• La Mata is a former fishing village with all normal traditional services and cultural festivals that you may find throughout Spain. It is situated between two waters: in front the Mediterranean Sea and behind the Laguna of La Mata. The area of the Laguna is a protected national park with a large acreage of vineyard.

• This region is perfect for a Boat trip or to enjoy a nice Sunday with your family and to discover the world of animals and plants. There is also a nice picnic space in the middle of the forest. The beaches of La Mata are one of the most beautiful of the Costa Blanca and are directly connected with the beaches of Guardamar, which has a length of 14 km.

• Just behind the beach you will find the famous and protected dunes of Guardamar. In the village you have a lot of selection of bars, restaurants and supermarkets. There is a church and a beautiful village square in the centre. A lot of people meet there after work, so there is always something going on there. Torrevieja you will reach with the bus every 15 min. and to Alicante you have a bus every hour.

• La Mata has a mix of different nationalities ranging from Spanish, German and British - though many of the properties are for holiday homes to live in Spain, a large percentage of the residents in the area live there full time and enjoy their time here. Altea - Costa Blanca

• The picturesque village of Altea is located on the Costa Blanca, south of Calpe and slightly north of the well known resort of Benidorm, based in the province of Alicante - Altea's population is roughly 18,000 and is an increasingly popular location for quiet holidays, even though it has benefitted from tourism from abroad since the 1950's.

• One of the main attractions of the village of Altea is the Nuestra Senora del Consuelo or Virgen de Consuelo, which is found on the hill side of Altea. From the beach looking inland - the old village is positioned on the hill that over looks the sea, the old village is built up of traditional Spanish homes upon the hill, the properties all benefit from the excellent sea and mountain views due to the steepness of the hill and position of Altea.

• The cobble stone roads run all the way throughout the village, with many typical Spanish shops, bars and restaurants running either side of you as you climb to the the top of Altea.

• Once you reach the peak, between a number of old style restaurants and bars - you are meet with a fantastic view that takes your breath away. Views for the deep blue sea and the large mountain in the background part of the Sierra Helada which is a national park between Benidorm and Altea.

• The village has a special feel to it, especially if you have been stuck in a holiday resort! This is what real Spain is about and is only a short drive from many popular holiday resorts, beautiful surroundings and scenery, the relaxing Spanish atmosphere, stunning local foods (fish locally caught) and drinks, many unique shops and a really nice day out, one place you will never forget.

• Altea hit a property boom (if you can call it that!) in the 1950's due to its popularity at the time but never hit the heights of construction like many towns and villages did in the 1990's and onwards during the countries big property boom, so properties in Altea are in general very typical of something that you would relate to in Spain with lots of character, properties are not cheap in Altea - you are paying for the area and in the main old town there is not a lot available on the property market so if one becomes available for purchase, they do not stay available for very long.

My Favourite Picture of a Waterfall

A recent visit to the Algar waterfall, located near to Callosa d’en Sarria on the northern Costa Blanca, Spain, reminded me of the pictures that I took the last time we visited in 2006, when my mother was on a trip and we wanted to take her somewhere a little different. The waterfall picture that I took that day is among my favourite photos, and I like to feature it on my website whenever relevant as it shows that the Costa Blanca is not all about beaches and bars. Around the Algar waterfall (Fuentes de Algar) there are a number of beautiful and interesting places to visit including my favourite, Guadalest (I have lots of Guadalest pictures as well!), Callosa d’en Sarria, the Arca sanctuary and the cactus garden. I have posted a small version of my favourite waterfall picture below.

Rainy Weather Spoils Holidays in Spain

Many people have visited the Costa Blanca in Spain this September and October expecting fine weather and a bit of peace and quiet after the summer madness, many were disappointed last week to find rain and gales over much of the region and white bodies were hardly getting reddened, sun lotion sales were down and umbrella sales were up. Come the first of October however and things have started to improve and the sun is showing itself once more bringing contentment and harmony to our late visitors, in Cabo Roig at least. Those of us who live here will know that the weather in Spain at this time of year is a little unreliable and storms are inevitable after many weeks of searing temperatures, most of us are glad to see a bit of rain to cool down the air and give us a day off from watering the garden!
