We watch edthe first episode of Fringe last night on Sky1 and I have to say that it was really fab and will definitely be tuning in each week. Can really see that that one of the creators worked on Lost too, the music between each scene cliffhanger is the same, perhaps their budget was running out at that point? It was a little on the unrealistic side and I think that too much happened but I guess it was the pilot so no doubt things will slow down in future episodes.

When I first tuned in last night I was really apprehensive as I do not want to watch another 'Lost', where you lose hours of your life and are always none the wiser and after each episode you always have more questions than answers. Swear to God that Lost will never end, it will go on so long that everyone that has been following it will have died so there is no need for it to conclude. If Lost ever does reach a conclusion that I can guarantee that all of us who have invested so many man hours into watching it will be bitterly dissappointed in the outcome, nothing can ever live up to the amount of build up that we have gone through and meet our ever so high expectations.

Good to see Joshua Jackson back doing something, only ever seen him in Dawson's Creek, this seems like a far better role given his age now. Really recognise the black guy who is Dunam's boss and have no idea what he has been in, this will no doubt bug me forever me, may have to google it.

Anyways will eagerly await next weeks episode and hope that it will keep up with the pilot.

Ahhh, Friday. The most glorious of all days. The sun shines brighter, the birds chirp louder, and the alcohol flows freely (or else, it will closer towards evening when my roommate and I head out to dance the night away). And although Fridays do put an extra special bounce in my Old-Navy-flip-flopped step, there are a few storm clouds on my otherwise sunny horizon that I need to address: Poorly Paired Celebrity Couples.

Yes, I KNOW that this topic keeps you awake at night too, grinding your teeth, rocking back and forth slowly muttering "What the HELL, TomKat? Brangelina? UGH"...and then you have to slap yourself because you've wasted brain cells and perfectly good sleep time AND because you're combining celebrity couples' names - which is so freaking annoying and needs to stop immediately (I blame Ryan Seacrest, even though I'm not quite sure it's his fault...it's just amusing to blame him for all of the world's problems).

So, thanks to the brilliant suggestion from a close friend of mine, let's suspend reality for a few fleeting moments.

Guilty Pleasure Friday: Get Back Together, Please!

1. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears - Pop Music Royalty

The world may have been a better place if these two had just worked out their problems and stayed together. They were practically engineered for each other; God/Buddha/Whoever did a coordinating paint-by-numbers from the PopStars collection and procured its Prince and Princess in J.T. and BritBrit. If they got back together, she could probably hold onto a shred of sanity, a decent hair weave, and at least partial custody of her kids. Justin would stop being so brooding and serious and could help Britney out by doing another duet to showcase his mad beatbox skills. Oh, how I hope to one day live in a world where Justin and Britney are once again united by unconditional love, laughter, and matching denim outfits.

2. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt - Hollywood's Golden Couple

I still think that their break up is a publicity stunt. I'll wake up Monday and the headlines will read: Too Perfect Together To Ever Be Apart. I mean, come on you guys! It's been years and people (well, me) are still not over your divorce. Brad, yes, Angelina Jolie seems incredibly hard to resist, what with the piercing blue eyes, amazing tattooed body, and those infamous lips, but even you must admit she's a shady character. She used to wear Billy Bob's blood in a vial around her neck, admitted to collecting and having a (sometimes sexual) fascination with knives, and made out with her brother on many occasions. I know she's practically a Saint these days, but WOW that's a LOT of baggage. Wouldn't you rather be with sweet, down-to-earth, naturally gorgeous Jennifer?

And, Jen, hang in there. I bet when Angelina is trying to convince Brad to adopt and save their 27th child he's just going to throw up his hands and say "ENOUGH. I did NOT sign up for this," and come running back to you.

3. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson - Beauty and No Brains

I'm going to admit it once and for all, I miss Newlyweds. These two, while sometimes gross and lots of time idiotic, were supremely entertaining together. Jessica sang her best songs and looked fantastic; Nick drank a lot of beer and got invited to Playboy Mansion Parties. What a great combination! Since then, Jess has had no career to speak of and Nick has still been working out and probably still drinking lots of beer. I know he is dating that pretty Vanessa girl, but their relationship just seems so 'eh' and boring - just two attractive people who photograph well together and always seem to be wearing swimsuits. Nick, where's the passion? The steamy music videos? The tank tops??? Get back together with Jessica before she completely collapses in on herself like a dying star. Then maybe you could try to launch your solo career again...

Hahaha, kidding. Please don't.

4. Katie Holmes and well, anybody else...

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE for Katie Holmes to get back together with Joshua Jackson (who wouldn't?), but in all honesty, I would LOVE for Katie Holmes to get with anybody other than Tom "crazy eyes" Cruise. Besides, she and Josh dated only briefly while filming the first 2 seasons of Dawson's Creek, and that was quite some time ago. Who knows if it would really happen again?

Then again, Katie dated and was engaged to Chris Klein for years. I don't really know much about their relationship but their couple-y pictures seem lovely, normal, and socially acceptable (all the missing pieces of her current relationship). So, Katie, for the love of Buddha, just pick somebody else. Being with Tom makes you look dead inside, makes you dress in really bad clothes, and makes you look like a giant.

You want another reason? Here. This photo is making EVERYBODY UNCOMFORTABLE:

YIKES.

*Update - I JUST noticed that not only is Tom Cruise totally creepy beyond all reason but he is soaking wet. What IS that, sweat? Like Katie needs ANOTHER reason to leave him. Ew.

E niente, come prevedibile, è facile come poteva sembrare.

Skins is my new favorite show.

Skins is my new favorite show.

Its basically like a British Degrassi, but 10x racier and a whole lot more f-bombs dropped in (they bleep it on on BBC America, and blur out a lot of things)

In the US the first season is airing right now, and I think there is only two in the UK so far.

Anyway, the show is fantastic. Especially if your sick of rich kids. Which I am.

There is a gay, a Muslim, a girl who had an eating disorder and then tried to kill herself, the nerdy sidekick, the guy who sleeps with everyone, your normalish girl who dates the guy who sleeps with everyone on and off, a musical girl, and a kid who is sleeping with his teacher. Well those are pretty much most of the main ones. So the characters are really diverse and that makes it even more interesting. And there are cute clothes! On both guys and girls!

It is more realistic than a lot of shows we're used to, but some things I really can't relate too. (Like everyone is smoking a cigarette... all the time)

But I really wanted to post this to tell you about the episode I just watched because it was not-so-realistic, yet very compelling. And as you may or may not know, I am a sucker for Olympic swimmers, guys who wear cardigans, and protective older brothers. This episode had 2/3 so it just had to be good.

So the boy who sleeps with everyone, Tony, was jealous of his now ex, Michelle, so in the last episode he stole her new boyrfriend's phone and tok the dirty pictures he took of that kid's sister and sent it to Michelles phone, so of course Michelle thinks her new bf is a total perv.

WELL n this episode Tony's younger sister decided to be all rebellious and go to some weird racing with shopping carts thing where she meets this guy who gives her some drugs and they get arrested, which leads to Tony (in a CARDIGAN) finding out his sister is up to something, and then they go to this crazy ass party house with weird lighting and a pool table because Tony never got to the jail on time and she already got out. There, the guy she came with and Michelle's new boyfriend injected her with more drugs so she passes out and then she got raped (it was so crazy!) and the whole time her brother was like "Where the hell is my sister"

None of Tony's friends like him anymore so no one would help him except Sid who then left him to go find the crazy girl, but then Tony got a ride to the crazy party house where Michelle's new boyfriend asked him to play poker, but he wanted to know where his sister is, and his sister was laying on the floor so he ran to her (ADORABLE OLDER BROTHERNESS) and tried calling an ambulance, BUT THEN the guy was like "Sorry no! You sent those pictures to Michelle so now if you want your sister to survive you're going to have to HAVE SEX WITH HER!" And of course Tony was like "NO!" and was crying so the kid was like stepping on his throat, but Tony was begging and said he would fix things and then carried his sister out. IT WAS ADORABLE. And in the car he was holding his little sister and it was just the cutest thing.

And THEN his mom accused him of giving her the drugs and it was so upsetting, but Sid stood up for him.

And it was just really good and you should all go watch it now that I told you the whole thing.

How can you not find the big brother protecting little sister thing adorable?

In Italia è andata in onda sopratutto su Canale 5 e poi alternativamente su Rete 4.

Essa semana eu estava querendo baixar alguma série diferente. Apenas para assistir o piloto e ver se eu iria querer ver os outros episódios, e eu estava em dúvida entre The Class, Dawson's Creek, Roswell, How I Meet Your Mother, Dirty Sexy Money, 90210 e It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia...

Approda su Cult in prima visione assoluta in Italia (canale 142 di SKY) ogni martedì alle 22:45 a partire dal 28 ottobre, TELL ME YOU LOVE ME – IL SESSO.
Prodotta dalla HBO e ideata da Cynthia Mort (produttrice e sceneggiatrice di Will & Grace ), Tell Me You Love Me – Il sesso.

Dear One Tree Hill,

Dear One Tree Hill,

I LOVE the fact that you are suppossed to be a drama. You are the funniest show I have ever seen. Probably for all the wrong reasons. Your "hot lead actor" Chad Micheal Murray is not that hot. I don't buy that 3 different girls would be head over heels in love with him. His brother? Perhaps! And I don't buy anyone would want to go back to this town. I mean, they didn't even do that in Dawson's Creek, they moved them!!

The thing about your show is that it's like a soap opera... and not in a good way. The acting sucks... like in soap operas. When that kid just died in your show I lost it because of the theatrics. I am the EASIEST person to make cry during a show. Let me list the ridiculousness I've cried during: The Hills (a few times), Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (the one where Carlton takes wills drugs from his locker... classic), Dawsons Creek, Gossip Girl, Friends, Felicity, Sex and the City, Will & Grace, The Office, and many many more (i DO notice many of these are comedies).

So in tonight's stupidity, (the lead star b-ball player apparently died last week) you decided to have your hot rod say, "We're going to play with only 4 players tonight... to honor Que." To which someone said... "its gonna be a tough loss." To which overdramatic, wishes he was as cute as pacey from dawsons creek, says, "It's not about winning, it's about healing." HAHAHAHA... No you jackass, it's about WINNING!! That's what basketball is! Are you kidding me? That kid's probably looking down on them saying... "what the hell? Honor me by LOSING?!?! Play five people and win, you idiots!!". Don't worry.... it gets better (or worse... I like to say better cause I'm optimistic) In the locker room as they talk about how they lost with 4 players (the only redeeming factor here is that they didnt make them win... that would have been a little too much). One of the genius's on the team says, "Coach we want to play with 4 players for the rest of the season." hahahahahhaha.... NO HIGH SCHOOL KID WOULD EVER SAY THAT?!?! Do you even KNOW how competitve boys are? I mean they're bad as men, but WAY worse as boys. I love it sooooo much. Man, I don't know who wrote this script but they have GOT TO BE losing it while they write it. There is NO WAY they think that's sweet. I won't even get started on how you literally cannot play with 4 people... that's too obvious. When the ref said that they couldn't play with 4 unless everyone else was hurt... the coach said, "We're all hurt." Oooohhhhhh Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

BUT what makes you TRULY hysterical isn't just the horrific lines and plot "twists", it's the second.... no make the like 10th rate acting you have on your show. Skillz (who is CLEARLY the black guy in the show, I'm glad you didn't make it stereotypical at all) is awful. He is You Got Served bad acting.... without the cool dancing to make you not care. Lucas (I think?) is awful. He always has that "Dramatic and trying to be sultry but failing" look on his not that good-looking face. What makes it awesome is that he delivers every line like the ending one in a politician's speech. With the dramatic music playing in the background... it gets to be a little too much.

You DO have SOME redeeming factors: That adorable little child ... who is, ironically the best actor on the show. The lead guy's brother, is very cute. He's not a good actor at all either, but at least he's cute. The girl who plays his wife is also adorable. Sure everything they both say and do is ridiculous, but they're cute. Then the one girls voice.... i forget her character's name... but her REAL name is Sophia Bush, is awesome. I wish I talked like that. I think thats actually the reason people tune in... to hear her voice.

I know why people like you though, One tree Hill. Well... I know why young girls like you, I have no idea why any self-respecting adult would. You have "cute" guys on it and even if you don't really want to watch, you feel like you have to. I'd compare you to a train wreck... I just cant look away. However, with a train wreck you're fascinated with sadness, with this show you HAVE to laugh. You're like this generation's less original, less talented, less creative, and less ground-breaking Dawson's Creek. My suggestion? Just play re-runs of Dawson's Creek, it was LEAGUES better.

I LOVE cheesiness and dramatic shows, I do. Gossip Girl= awesomeness. But One Tree Hill... you have GOT to pull yourself together. Fire half the cast, stop playing the music, and fire the writers... they're totally punking you. Or actually, you are pretty amusing, so just keep it up so I can watch in disbelief and amusement.

Laughing at you (not with you),

Come?

And you better believe hubby Tom Cruise was in the audience!
Remember that Friends episode where Ross and Rachel pick 5 celebrities of the opposite sex they woul

Remember that Friends episode where Ross and Rachel pick 5 celebrities of the opposite sex they would be allowed a 'freebie' with? Well, guess what loyal reader(s), I have a list of my own! After many sleepless nights, I present to you: My Five (in no particular order).

1. John Krasinski - Jim Halpert from The Office

I'm such a sucker for you, John/Jim. I have a thing for nerdy underdogs with a great sense of humor and adorable smile. I am embarrassed to admit that I think I'm honest-to-god in love with you. I have memorized every episode of your show, done countless Google searches for your biographies and photos, and keep a life-sized cut-out of you propped up in my kitchen so I can get up every morning, enjoy my coffee, and say "Good morning, sweetheart! Did you sleep well?"

Whoops...I may have said too much (that's what we call an overshare). I promise I'm not insane! But seriously, John, I'd love if you could mail me some of your hair and maybe an old sweater so I can add them to the statue I'm making of you.

2. Joshua Jackson - Pacey from Dawson's Creek

Cue the Paula Cole theme song, and get me my row boat! Because, Josh/Pacey, I don't want to wait for my life to be over. I want to know right now, what will it be? Stop leading me on with your completely adorable grin, your devil-may-care slacker attitude, and your sexy cable-knit sweaters! I demand to know where you went after Dawson's Creek ended. Come back soon because I'm starting to think you don't love me the way I love you.

3. Christopher Meloni - Elliot Stabler from Law and Order: SVU

Is there anything better than watching Benson and Stabler kick the shit out of pedophiles? I think NOT. This show is my crack. I am 100% out-of-my-mind addicted, and Chris Meloni is mostly to blame. He has a gun and a badge, a penchant for breaking all the rules, and tough bad-boy image. Done and done.

(Oh, and Mary Frances? I know you're going to post some comment about his receding hairline, and you know what? I think it's sexy so don't even bother.)

4. Ami James - from Miami Ink

I certainly don't expect any of you to understand the bond we share - how a bad boy tattoo artist living in Miami can have such a powerful connection with a 23 year old Development Coordinator from Richmond, VA - but there's something about you that I can't get enough of, Mr. James. I dig your bald head, hardcore tattoos and low rise jeans. Call me up sometime and maybe we can get inked together.

5. Taylor Hanson

STOP JUDGING ME.

[caption id="attachment_1693" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Typical day at the office"][/caption]

So Fitz wanted to check out a new show on the Fox network titled, "Fringe" (as in Fringe Science or pseudosciences that lack scientific plausibility). We watched an episode that he DVR'd and it was...interesting....and different...and borderline trippy. I'm going to check it out again this week to decide whether or not I want to become a dedicated watcher.

Normally, I am into this kind of weird stuff. I like anything that has to do with forensics and/or the unknown/unsolved mysteries/suspense/etc. These kinds of things make my brain go into all sorts of intricate research patterns and I dig it.

But this show, and it's insane special effects, freaked me out (to my own credit it showed an FBI agent submerged in a rusty tub under the influence of LSD communicating subconsciously with a man in a coma). I also couldn't get past the fact that the genius son of a genius scientist was portrayed by none other than Pacey Witter (a.k.a. Joshua Jackson). Ugh, I can't help it! Every time his face would flash on the TV screen, I had to restrain myself from yelling, "PACEY!!!" (or "Charlie Conway" for you Mighty Ducks fans- I don't care, you pick).

Anyway, so the preview for this week's episode is like scene out of Rosemary's Baby (totally unrelated to the pilot episode). When watching said preview I was both nauseated and intrigued (a brilliant combo). While I think the pilot was shocking in a good way, I also found some parts to be VERY bizarre as there was a lot to take in. In this next episode I am looking forward to more special effects, more cool FBI shizz, as well as a stronger central plot line revolving around 'the pattern' (tune in, you'll figure it out, then we can discuss).

Adios.

I tuned into the new television show Fringe on Fox last night.

So far, it seems okay. There's some promise there for it to become another J.J. Abrams cult hit. That whole opening scene with the people turning into goo was gross and hey! it was that guy who went crazy and tried to burn his son alive in The Lord of the Rings!

But whatever... Pacey Witter's back on my screen!

*Sigh*

Yes, I admit it, I was pretty much obsessed with Dawson's Creek back in high school. Mainly of course because of the Pacey/Joey storyline and the prettiness that is Joshua Jackson.

I have absolutely no idea what his Fringe character's name is cause it's going to take a lot for him to become anyone other than Pacey to me. But I'll be tuning in again next week. It was well worth sitting through a scene of people having their skin melt off their face.

I’m not much one for mystery/conspirary shows. I was never into the X-files, I’ve watche

I'm not much one for mystery/conspirary shows. I was never into the X-files, I've watched a few episodes of Lost without getting sucked in, and the same goes for Alias. Even in my teenage drama years, I might have watched Roswell for a bit, but I lost interest pretty soon. So why would I even bother with J.J.Abrams' latest effort, Fringe?

Well, the main reason harkens back to those same teenage drama years. Fruitstand confession (TM): I used to watch Dawson's Creek religiously. Oddly enough though, it wasn't Dawson, the wannabe filmmaker, that I watched it for (he was dull, as evidenced by his rather predictable choice of idol: Steven Spielberg). No, the boy I drooled over, the boy who I imagined in my daydreams kissing and reforming, was Pacey.

Over the years, Joshua Jackson, who played Pacey, descended into ever worse thrillers and horror movies, his face getting doughier and less bad-boy every time. But he's back now, it seems, as one of the leads on this strange show. So, to humor my fifteen-year-old self, I had to at least watch the pilot. Right?

The episode starts with a plane in which everyone's face melts off. Tough yet sensitive FBI agent Olivia Dunham investigates, and stumbles across weird shit. The premise of the show (as far as I understood it): there is some kind of mysterious pattern. Seemingly unrelated weird and horrific events might have something to do with it. Apparently, the only one who can make sense of it is loony professor Walter Bishop. And apparently, the only one who can get the professor to co-operate is his brilliant but troubled son... Pacey!

Of course (mild spoilers), the two leads must have this will-they-or-won't-they chemistry. This means the FBI-agent Dunham's currently banging will have to either die or turn out to be evil (or both). Furthermore, there will be loads of pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo (check), cool and creepy special effects (check), a nefarious organisation and more questions than answers (check and check).

It might have been my mildly intoxicated state (I crashed a physics BBQ), or just my general disdain for show that present "science" as being something arcane and really more like magic, but I couldn't get very exited about all this. The tone was also a bit too self-serious to my liking, and Pacey (yes, I am going to keep on calling him that) a bit lackluster. I will give this one one or two more episodes to hook me (unlike, say, 90210), but so far, it isn't doing it for me.

Except, that is, for the final quote, which is pure campy ridiculousness.

Anyway, did you watch? What did you think? Or do you find J.J. to be impossible overrated?

September 4th marked my 1 year anniversary in New York City. And what a year its been! Brooklyn is certainly different than any other place I've ever lived, way more bodegas and boutiques and way fewer trees and SUVs than this Texas girl is used to. But it's grown on me. I'm about a week into AllieBK: Year Two...and so far so...similar to Year 1. But I'm confident that this year will bring positive changes and exciting challenges and blah blah blah, lets talk about TV.

With the exception of an increasingly bizarre season of WEEDS, and a 5th run of Project Runway lack which lacks any real fun/quote worthy characters, this summer was so incredibly void of anything worth watching on the 'ole Telly that I fell into a nighttime routine that included, !GASP!, reading, doing arts and crafts, and spending way too much time out of the house. I even resorted to netflixing total 90s crap like the first season of Beverly Hills 90210 which, if you aren't a 9 year old circa 1993 when I first saw the show, really is not very good. AT. ALL.

It's because I'd become so accostom to this summertime mediocrity that I almost MISSED last night's debut of my dear beloved J.J. Abrams' new series, "Fringe".

I CAN HAZ ZCI PHI JOO

num nums! I love this man! Thank the lord that my roomy is just as big a nerd as I am, and she was around to remind me to rejoin the world on the couch.

That said, I wasn't sure I loved this new show until the last 1/2 hour or so. First of all, it started on an airplane (LOST) at night (LOST) there was turbulence (LOST) and TV static (LOSTLOSTLOSTLOST) and I was thinking maybe that Cloverfield monster knocked something loose in ole J.J.'s brain until BAM some dude's FACE started to fall off. I don't usually love gory shit, but that oozing skin was extremely unsettling in a fantastic way.

Unfortunately, face melting aside, the first part of the show really dragged and was pretty over acted. The main woman character is sort of an emotionless butterface and even Lt. Daniels was shining on a little too strong (although I am happy to see a former "WIRE" cast-member do something interesting and credible, unlike SOME people...) but I really thought that the show picked up when PACEY WITTER hit the screen.

PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEY WITTER, the love of my 14 year old self's life. WOO HOO. I was so happy to see him back on TV 10 years after his "Dawson's" debut (I'm fucking old). Although he was a bit too quipy and childlike for me to believe that his character was really "40 IQ points above genius," he looked so GOOD with a beard, I nearly swooned!

I also really loved Pacey's Dad on the show, John Noble, who plays Dr. Walter Bishop, an institutionalized Dr. Frankenstein-esq mad-Scientist whose best line in the first half hour of "Fringe" was arguably, "I just pissed myself." Pretty good. He was extremely entertaining.

For those who didn't watch the show, all I will say about the ridiculous scene where the lead female gets all sexy in her black underwear/matching bra while she's injected with Special K and LSD and submerged in a closed water tank so she can communicate subconsciously with her comatose lover with the translucent skin is that it was awesome. But, obviously, you should judge for yourself.
Instead I'll mention that the final 1/2 hour, with its twists and mentions of the PATTEN(WHAT IS THE PATTERN?!?!?) was thrilling and, crummy dialogue and droney LOST music aside, I think this show has potential. You have to hand it to JJ Abrams when it comes to mysteries...dude knows how to confuse and frustrate. "Fringe" will be a good LOST stand in...for now.

oh: just for shits and giggles, here's an interview w/ Josh Jackson, who is just as yummy as himself as he is on the TeeVee: http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1774293758/bctid1774291264. ENJOY!

as much as i hate katie holmes and her whole joey potter drama, i admit, i used to get really "kilig" whenever i saw joey and pacey together. no, i didn't exactly follow dawson's creek that intensely since i found james van der beek uber annoying and whiney. pacey, though, is something else. joshua jackson makes me squeal like a school girl ever since his mighty ducks days. yah, remember charlie? haaay.

but wait, i digress. i was reading the daily intel and guess what? pacey visits joey! ok, fine, joshua visits katie holmes during her play rehearsals in broadway. joshua supposedly was concerned because katie was looking gaunt and tired. and get this, quoting the daily mail article

"'So he just decided to drop by. It was really sweet, he just turned up unexpectedly with a bunch of flowers and said: 'Hello stranger.' Katie was shocked, but so happy to see him. It was a wonderful surprise. She gave him such a big hug.'

OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!! *i die of kilig-ness*

but seriously, isn't this bit of news like creepy and kilig-inducing all at the same time? katie, now the a-lister, married to megastar whacko tom cruise falling in love again with first love d-lister actor joshua jackson. ahh, this could be a movie, don't you think? i'm sure it would be much better than the stinker that is "for the first time" starring KC concepcion and richard guitierrez. pure GROSSNESS! (consider this a warning!)

aww. pacey and joey forever!

/me starts singing "i don't want to wait for our lives to be over..."

Has anyone else seen those ads for the new season of 90210? I hate to admit it but, part of me is intrigued and may just be sucked into watching this ‘new breed’ of Hollywood brats at work.

If you’re around the same age as me, you’ll vaguely remember trying to sneakily deceive your parents and stay up late to watch the young Beverley Hills high school gang. They’d start bitch fights, sleep around, and deal with the trials and tribulations of growing up rich in California. I remember retrieving a poster of Jason Priestley from the latest Smash Hits and proudly sticking it up in my room. Mmm…those clean cut looks and washed out jeans were just my thing…

The hit series ran from 1990-2000 and was largely successful during this time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beverly_Hills,_90210). I guess it’s rather obvious then why would Hollywood want to revive this type of series for the next generation then…or is it? Haven’t we moved on from teen TV hits series like 90210, The OC and Dawson’s Creek? Have these hit shows had their day? Or do a new breed of Gen Y need shows like these just like I did when I was growing up? Network Ten certainly think so and purchased the first season of the series without even viewing the Pilot! (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24141793-5006022,00.html).

We will soon find out what Australian audiences think with 90210: The Next Generation being ‘fast tracked’ to Network Ten. The first episode will air on Monday the 8th of September.

A family friend of mine made a cameo as a background extra/singer in the new pilot of “90210” w

A family friend of mine made a cameo as a background extra/singer in the new pilot of “90210” which premiered last night on the CW Network, so I had no choice but to tune in! I already decided I wouldn’t allow myself to get wrapped up in yet another TV show in the fall season. I like Shenae Grimes (of Degrassi: The Next Generation), and as excited, as I was to see my friend, I did not enjoy watching the two-hour episode, only to see her on screen for less than 3 minutes.

I became turned off halfway through the show because there seems to be a trend in creating programs about over-privileged teenagers. (See: 90210,The Hills, Gossip Girl, and Privileged) It’s funny that three out of four of these programs listed are airing on the CW network. Shows like these center their plot points around gossip, drama, scandal, sex, partying, the “in crowd”, designer duds and doing unthinkable things to get you there.

It seemed only a few years ago that the emphasis for prime-time shows had plotlines centered around college life including Felicity, Dawson’s Creek, and Gilmore Girls. The new focus has transitioned to high school.

I went to a performing arts high school in Manhattan as a musical theater major, so I know my time in the classroom didn't mimic my peers at a “typical” high school. My friends and I didn’t party - Instead we would hang out at Starbucks talking about auditions, bands we liked and of course, boys.

In high school, I remember watching the O.C. (executive produced by Josh Schwartz of Gossip Girl) and thinking to myself, that it’s 8 o’clock at night and yet they are able to show some teenager doing lines of coke at an out-of control party during primetime hours. I expect the new season of 90210 to follow suit by airing something that is equivalent during their first season.

Question: Why does the television culture present shows with characters who are underage are able to get into bars and also show them slipping small bottles of alcohol into their drinks in public at cafes?

I have enough wherewithal to know that underage drinking occurs in real life, but why is it be embraced and acceptable to watch? Maybe my cause for alarm is an early maternal instinct or simply that I don’t enjoy hearing about people younger than me heading down the path of corruption. I prefer to hear about children that haven’t lost their innocence, and enjoy jumping on a trampoline or laughing with their friends.

Alcohol:
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “about 90% of the alcohol consumed by youth under the age of 21 years in the United States is in the form of binge drinks.” That’s an alarming statistic.

In future programming, I hope to see young people who are happy being sober and enjoy activities that don’t require getting drunk. Instead of that seeming “square” to society, it would be nice for those children to be embraced for their healthy choices.

“Let’s talk about sex, baby.”
We know kids are having sex at younger and younger ages and winding up pregnant (See: Juno, The Secret Life of the American Teenager). Jamie-Lynn Spears had a baby at age16. She was blamed for a pregnancy pact at a high school in MA where they have had more teen pregnancy cases this year than ever before. Bristol Palin, daughter of Republican VP candidate, Sarah Palin is 17 and pregnant. I read Jamie-Lynn is sending her over a gift for support and to welcome her into the club. Of course I can’t speak to the role modeling that either of these girls have had.

There also are more twenty-year-old celebrities having babies too. They seem to be everywhere these days! It’s a little less shocking to me having children in your twenties because at age 18, you are legally an adult and old enough to accept responsibility for your actions.

According to James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth in an article in the Detroit Free Press he says today “The U.S. has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the developed world, because we refuse to get real when it comes to young people and sex. In a nation where 95% of citizens have sex before marriage, our official government policy on sex education is "abstinence-only-until-marriage”. The Bush administration has pumped over $1.5 billion into these programs over the last eight years, despite an exhaustive congressional evaluation showing that they have “no impact on teen behavior.”

ATTN: Bush Administration: IT’S NOT WORKING!

Kids are going to have sex anyway, especially if you tell them abstinence is the only option. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy says “that over 34% of all teens have had sex by grade 9.” Sure it’s the beginning of high school but these students are only 14 and 15. Their bodies haven’t even stopped developing from puberty yet.

My high school had comprehensive sex education, which meant the school received no funding from the government. Conservatives believe that comprehensive sex education encourages promiscuity and sexual relations. If you have a course that is “abstinence only” and the students decide to have sex, they haven’t been informed about condoms and other forms of contraceptives to protect themselves and many end up using incorrect measures as a fail-safe.

You can compare this debate to that of the Clean Needle Program. When a clinic offers clean needles, it doesn’t mean everyone is suddenly going to want to shoot heroin! If you choose to engage in risky behavior, you will be doing it safely whether its condoms or needles.

When it comes to drugs, sex and alcohol, parents need to be involved in their children lives and talk to them about these issues so that family values and attitudes are made clear. To think that you can avoid confronting these issues or hoping your children will do the right thing is living in denial. I find it shocking when parents are completely unaware of these situations.

Regarding the content of these shows: I don’t want to sound like the Parents Council whose negative review of Gossip Girl got added as positive marketing fuel to their print and outdoor campaign ads.

Naturally these shows provide us with a world where we can escape. The programs are not the direct result in causing these behaviors in teens around the nation; They are a mere reflection of the current reality mixed in with the fiction generated for purposes of content.

I hope that young girls don’t try to emulate the behaviors of these idealized characters. Parents need to encourage their kids to be smart and to not succumb to peer pressure. Perhaps next season the “trash” can be replaced with “class” because adding more positive programming to the networks would be a welcome change.

I grew up watching Dawson's Creek; junior high and high school I spent one night a week idolizing Joey Potter, being annoyed with Jen Lindley and not understanding what anyone saw in banana-faced Dawson. I've been able to get back into it recently because I have DVR (eep!) finally, so I can catch the 4am TBS showings without totally losing out on sleep.

So, what's stuck me is the fact that if you told either Michelle Williams or Katie Holmes how their lives would be right today, they would say to you: "No way!" Michelle, surprisingly with the most successful career coming out of it, all raising an adorable (well, that's not that much of surprise) baby who she had with the star of one of the most successful Batman movies of all time, who's death was one of the most-covered celebrity deaths of the year. And then Katie Holmes, also with an unsuprisingly adorable baby, but this time raising it with TOM FUCKING CRUISE. Oh, and that whole scientology thing.

Like I said, they would respond to a future biography with a resounding "Impossible."
