PS: ya han sacado la 1.0.1!

mobile me temmuz 2008'den itibaren .mac* hizmetinin değişen ve geliştirilen yeni adı olacak. ben bu naçizane "review"'imde birkaç bölümde mobile me'yi anlatmaya çalışacağım.

bölüm 1

mobile me'yi anlamak için önce .mac* hizmetininin ne olduğunu bilmek gerek. .mac* apple'ın mac os işletim sistemiyle entegre bir online hizmeti. yılda 99 $ ödeyerek bir .mac* hesabı aldığınızda apple size @mac.com uzantılı bir e-posta adresi, kişisel dosyalarınız, e-postalarınız, web siteniz için kullanabileceğiniz 10 gblık online disk alanı ve aylık 100 gb bantgenişliği hizmeti veriyor. ayrıca aldığınız kullanıcı adı ve şifresi apple'ın kullanıcılarına özel anında mesajlaşma sistemi olan ichat programıyla da kullanılıyor. bu hizmetlerin hepsi de daha önce belirttiğim üzere işletim sistemindeki "out of box" (kurulu bir şekilde gelen) çeşitli programlarla entegre çalışıyor. bu programlar arasında da el ele, kol kola, kardeşçe bir ilişki var. örneğin; ichat'e eklediğiniz bir kişi bilgisi aynı zamanda adres defterine de yazılıyor, bu adres defterindeki bilgiler aynı zamanda e-posta programı tarafından da paylaşılıyor. takvime girdiğiniz bir randevuya e-postayla hatırlatma eklerseniz e-posta programı gereken zamanda hatırlatmayı e-posta olarak gönderiyor. yukarıdaki satırları okurken "it sounds familiar" ya da "bu hizmetler biryerlerden tanıdık geliyor." dediğinizi duyar gibiyim. google'ın verdiği hizmetlere benzeyen bir sistem. dahası nuhtemelen "what the fuck..." yani "aga google bunları ücretsiz veriyor zaten" de diyorsunuz. haklısınız; mobile me kısaca google'ın bedavaya, tek kuruş ödemeden, beleşe verdiği tüm hizmetleri sadece ve sadece yılda 99 $'a tüm apple addict, applemaniac, appleslave kullanıcılara satmak demek. bölüm 2'de tablo 1'de karşılaştırmalı olarak mobile me ve google hizmetlerini kabaca listelemeye çalıştım.

e-posta: mobile me vermiş olduğu 20 gb online disk alanının istediğiniz kadarını @mac.com uzantılı e-posta adresine ayırabilmenizi sağlıyor. gmail ise sadece an itibariyle 6-6,5 gblık bir alan veriyor. kanımca 6 veya 20 gb arasında çok da fark yok. asla 6 gb’ın ya da 20 gb’ın doldurulabileceğine inanmadığımdan diskalanını anahtar bir özellik olarak görmüyorum. e-posta’da önemli olan sunucuların uptime olma zamanı, güvenlik ve spam filtresinin kalitesi. apple’ın sitesinde yıllardır film fragmanlarını düzenli ve sorunsuz yayınlaması, dünyanın en çok indirilen programlardan olan itunesve quicktime programlarını tıkır tıkır host etmesi, virüs konusunda güvenli mac os kullanan sunucularının olması ve 3 yılllık deneyimimle söyleyebilirim ki spam mail filtreleme konusundaki başarısı göz dolduruyor. gmail’in en büyük kozu “beleş” olması. havadan 6 gb e-posta hesabınız oluyor. bunun yanında sunucular konusunda da oldukça başarılı zira koskoca google video’yu host eden bir şirketin mahsulü. spam filtresi konusunda çok bilgim yok ama tecrübem çabuk şişen spam posta kutusunun bazen rahatsız olabileceğini söylüyor. her ne kadar apple'ı host konusunda yere göğe sığdıramıyorum gibi bir imaj çizsem de aslında .mac döneminde zaman zaman e-postalarıma ulaşamadığımı ama bunun yanında gmail'de şimdiye kadar hiçbir sorun yaşamadığımı eklemek isterim.

bölüm 3

takvim: mobile me mac os’un gelişmiş ical takvim programıyla senkronize çalışıyor. daha önce .mac* döneminde takvimleriniz webde yayınlamadıysanız (ki bu seçenek takviminizi adresini bilen herkese açık yapıyordu.) sadece macintosh’unuzdan ulaşılabilir halde kalıyordu. bu durum google calendar gibi online, tarayıcı ara yüzlü web 2.0 uygulamalarına mahkum bırakıyordu. mobile me bu eksiklik kapatmış ve ical takvimlerinize herangi bir tarayıcı ara yüzünden, tarayıcı yüklü herhangi bir işletim sisteminden bağlanıp macintoshunuzun başındaymışcasına rahatlıkla yönetmenizi sağlar hale getirmiş. google calendar ise aynı şeyi çıktığı günden bu yana yapıyor. hemi de bedavaya. google calendar'ın bu anlamda en büyük eksiği kol kola girebileceği bir masaüstü uygulamasının olmamasıydı fakat son zamanlarda mozilla sunbird ile google calendar yolları bu bağlamda kesişmeye başladı. fakat şu an için sunbird'ün eklentisiz, ek program kurmadan google calendar ile senkronizasyonu yapılamıyor. hala pratiklik açısından ical ve mobile me birlikteliği “`rocks!” ama yakındasunbirdya da başka bir takvim yazılımıgoogle calendarile “native” uyumu sağlar.google calendar`'ın bir artısından da bahsetmek istiyorum. ücretsiz olarak takvim girdilerine sms ile hatırlatma ekleyebiliyorsunuz. tabi ki bu hizmet de beleş. bu hizmet benim çok sık kullandığım bir servis. google calendar native masaüstü entergrasyonundan kaybettiği puanı sms hatırlatmalırıyla geri kazanıyor.

bölüm 4

anında mesajlaşma: ichat apple’ın anında mesajlaşma platformu. msn, gtalk, yahoo messenger, aol messenger gibi akranları piyasada mevcut. ichat’in akranları arasında öne çıkan özelliği; sade, işlevsel arayüz tasarımı ve gelişmiş görüntülü sohbet özelliği. ichat ile (sanırım 6 kişiye kadar) görüntülü web konferanslar yapabiliyorsunuz. gtalk’ta sesli sohbet var fakat web kamerasını desteklemiyor. ama sesli sohbetin kalitesinin diğer yazılımlara nazaran daha iyi olduğu söyleniyor. ben daha önce denemediğimden fikir beyan edemiyorum. gtalk ücretsiz. aslında ichat de ücretsiz. zira apple 60 günlük deneme .mac hesabı açmanıza izin veriyor. yalnız bu deneme hesabını açmak için eskiden mutlaka kayıt işlemini bir macintosh üzerinden yapmanızı şart koşuyordu. bu deneme hesabının özelliği kısıtlı özelliklere erişim sağlaması. e-posta, ichat, sık kullanılanların yedeklenmesi gibi özellikler dışındakiler ücret ödeyerek ediniliyor(du). mobile me ‘de de benzer bir uygulama olur mu henüz bilmiyorum. 1 temmuz’dan sonra göreceğiz. bu hesabın bir özelliği de para ödemeseniz bile hesap bilgileri asla silinmiyor. yani crazyboy_21m_ank@mac.com adresini aldınız ama sonradan ücret ödemediniz ya da hesabınızın yıllık yenilemesini yapmadınız; ichat hesabınız kapanmıyor, yıllar sonra da para bastırsanız kaldığı yerden tüm özellikleriyle hesabınızı kullanmaya devam ediyorsunuz. bu yüzden bir bakıma ichat de ücretsiz sayılabilir. yalnız; sadece mac os’da çalışan bir program olması yaygın kullanımını ve listenize ekleyecek arkadaş bulmanızı engelliyor. bu açıdan apple’ın ichat’i “sucks!” denebilir. gtalk da yaygınlık konusunda msn live messenger’in ayakları altında ezildiğinden fikrimin ince gülünce ichat kadar “sucks!” denebilir. insanlar msn space, windows live messenger, hotmail gibi alternatiflere daha çok rabet ediyorlar. bu “round”’u ne mobile me ne de google labs kazanabiliyor. msn anında mesajlaşma platformunun büyük kısmını işgal ederek ipi göğüslüyor.

bölüm 5

adres defteri: mac os’daki addressbook programı gmail ya da gtalk’un iletişim listesinden daha kullanışlı, sade ve gelişmiş bir yazılım olmasına rağmen .mac’i ilk kullanmaya başladığım günden beri bir kişiyi bile kaydetmediğim bir yazılım. bunun nedeni; online olarak iletişim listeme ulaşamayacak ve başka herhangi bir program ya da cihazla (cep telefonu, pda vb.) bu listeyi senkronize edemeyecek olmamdı. şimdi apple mobile me ile bu yazılımı web 2.0 uygulamasına yaraşır bir formatta adam etmeyi akıl etti. bu adam ediş çabasında iphone’un da payı büyük. adres defteri gsm şebekesi ile web 2.0 arasındaki köprüyü oluşturuyor. eğer iphone gibi adres defteri uygulamasını kullanmayı “gerektirecek” bir platform olmasaydı adres defterinin internetten yönetilebiliyor olması zorunluluğu doğmayacaktı. google cephesine gelince adres defterinin gmail ve gtalk içine gömülmesi ve bir masaüstü uygulamasıyla entegrasyonunun olmayışı açıkçası beni tatmin etmiyor. mobile me’nin ne kadar kullanışlı olacağını zaman gösterecek.

ps: şöyle bir araştırdım ve google'ın paylaşılabilir adres defteri hizmeti vereceğini öğrendim. muhtemelen bir masaüstü uygulaması da olacak gibi görünüyor. (bkz: http://blogs.zdnet.com/google/?p=629)

bölüm 6

sık kullanılanlar: sık kullanılanların sınıflandırılması, yedeklenmesi .mac üzerinden safari ile yapılabiliyor. mobileme sitesinde epey bir araştırma yapmama rağmen online olarak sık kullanılanların yönetilmesi (ulaşım, düzenleme vb.) konusunda apple bilgi vermemiş. sadece safari üzerinden pc ve mac’lerde sık kullanılanların senkronize edilebileceğinden bahsedilmiş. google bookmarks mobileme’nin bu konudaki alternatifi. google toolbar ile beraber mükemmel bir ikili olabiliyorlar. bu sayede cross platform çeşitli tarayıcılarda google bookmarks’a erişebiliyorsunuz ve online olarak bağlantılarınızı yönetebiliyorsunuz. bu açılardan mobileme’ye fark atmasına rağmen safari kullanma alışkanlığım olması mobilemenin bu özelliğine göz kırpmamı sağlayabilirdi fakat firefox sağolsun foxmarks bu konuda imdadıma yetişti diyebilirim. foxmarks bir firefox eklentisi. foxmarks.com sitesinden ücretsiz edinebileceğiniz bir hesapla hem google hem de apple’ın verdiği hizmetten daha iyisini ücretsiz alabiliyorsunuz. foxmarks birden çok bilgisayarı destekliyor, kullanımı kolay, ücretsiz. ayrıca doğrudan istediğiniz tarayıcıyla bağlantılara ulaşabiliyorsunuz. google bookmarks hakkında bir şey eklemek isterim; google bağlantılara etiket eklemenizi sağlayarak daha derli toplu bir arşivi amaçlıyor ama benim gibi etiketleme özürlü obsesif kişiler için bu özellik her tarafın etiketlerle dolu olduğu darmadağın bir arşivle sonuçlanabilir. etiketleme ne mobile me'de ne de foxmarks'da var. bence olmasına da gerek yok.

bölüm 7

internet sitesi ve internet galerileri: apple ezelden beri .mac hesabı için reklamsız websitesi hostingi veriyordu. fakat bu hosting statik sayfalar için geçerliydi. yani server taraflı içerik oluşturulamıyordu. bence apple’ın en büyük ayıplarından biri dinamik web teknolojilerinin yükseldiği şu dönemde ağ üzerinde sebil ücretsiz php, asp vb. host siteleri varken, kullanıcılarını katı ve hantal html tenkonolojisine mahkum etmesi. bu mahkus kaderi ilife 2008 paketiyle beraber piyasaya sürdüğü iweb ile de telafi etmeye çalıştı ama nafile. web sitesi yapmayı; hiçbirşey bilmeyen kullanıcılar için kolaylaştırmaya çalışıyım derken bence eline yüzüne bulaştırdı. kullanıcı bilgisayarı taraflı tasarımı inat edip server taraflıya çeviremedi. iweb’in şablonları apple’ın zihinleri açan, adeta ilham perilerini davet eden düsturdaki çizgisine yakışmayan değişmezlik ve yavanlıkta. mobilme de çok parlak bir gelecek vaad etmiyor. yine php yok, yine veritabanı yok ortada. host açısından yüz güldüren tek şey: flickr kalitesine ve mantalitesine yaklaşan galeri hizmeti. 20 gb alan verilmesi, fantastik ara yüzlerde galerilerin bir tıkla hazırlanması bir an kendisi de ücretli olan flickr’ı terk etmek konusunda düşündürse de galerilere kimlerin erişim sağlayacağı konusunda kararların çok esnek olmaması bir yıl daha flickr hesabımızı uzattırmamıza sebep oluyor. google’a gelince gönüllerin robin hood vari şirketi google picasa hizmetiyle ücretsiz fotoğraf hostunda hatrısayılır bir yer ediniyor. ben kısa süre kulllanmama rağmen ücretsiz bir hizmetten beklediğim herşeyi karşıladığını düşünüyorum.google'ın web sitesi hostu konusunda apple'ı ezim ezim ezdiği gerçeğini yadsıyamayız, picasa ile image hosting, blogger ile blog hosting, google page creator ile de bağımsız web sayfaları hazırlanması konusunda, google docs ile ofis dökümanlarının saklanması, yayınlanması ve online olarak düzenlenmesi konusunda, dahası google reader ile online rss saklanmasını sağlamasıyla apple'ın kafaya balyoz gibi iniyor google.hem de ücretsiz bir balyoz. tek eksiği apple'ın idisk'ine benzer online dosya paylaşımı ve backup hizmeti vermemesi. onun da yakında olacağına dair haberler var. kaldı ki biraz uğraşarak google drive ile gmail'i bu iş için kullanabiliyorsunuz.

google'dan bunca beleş balyozu uzun süredir yemesine rağmen nasıl oluyor da titreyip kendine gelmiyor şaşırtıcı bir durum.

.macle ilgili olarak merak ettiğim konulari özetleyecek olursam;

(1) neden php, mysql host vermiyor?,

(2) neden wordpress, drupal vb. bir dinamik içerik yönetimi özelliğini işletim sistemine entegre etmiyor da iweb denen abuk programı kullanmakta ısrar ediyor? bana paşa paşa versin php hostumu, mysql veritabanımı ben adam gibi wordpress'imi kurayım. neden sadece sıradan kullanıcıyı düşünüyor apple?

(3) idisk uygulamasını neden bu kadar hantal ve kullanışsız yapıyor (zira idiskle dinamik, etkileşimli online dosya senkronizasyonu yapmak imkansız, 10 kb dosyayı 15 dakikada upload edebilirseniz şanslı sayılırsınız)

(4) neden online ofis hizmeti vermiyor? (ki elinde addressbook, ical gibi nefis uygulamalar mevcut bunlar bir online word processor ile birleşince ormanda 10 google docs gücünde olabilirler ve harikalar yaratabilirler.)

neyse yazının sonuna doğru sinirlerim tepeme fırladı kusura bakmayın. umarım mobileme ne işe yarıyor biraz olsun anlatabilmişimdir. bu öninceleme 1 temmuz 2008'den sonra inceleme halinde tekrar klavyeye yatırılacaktır.

Hace unos meses me dió por probar google bookmarks. Me parecía interesante tener los bookmarks en un lugar en la red, al que se pudiera acceder desde cualquier ordenador. Esto me resultaba particularmente cómodo para guardar páginas que podrían servirme en el trabajo y que descubro en casa, en esas horas intempestivas en las que me da por moverme por la red. Hasta entonces la forma de compartir esos enlaces era mediante e-mail: yo me enviaba a mi mismo un correo con las direcciones que me podían interesar. También me podría servir para guardar noticias que salen sobre la competencia, que hasta ahora guardaba en ficheros pdf organizados por carpetas, por si perdía los marcadores en algún formateo. Google Bookmarks resolvía ese problema, guardando los marcadores en un lugar accesible desde casa y desde la oficina, y además nunca lo perdería por no hacer un backup de los marcadores antes de formatear el ordenador.

La pega que le vi inicialmente fue el tener que ir a la web de GB cada vez que quería guardar o recuperar un marcador. Pero para eso están los add-ons de Firefox, uno de los cuales te permite tener un menú y acceder a los Google Bookmarks como si fuesen los marcadores de tu navegador. El inconveniente de este sistema es que perdías la posibilidad de dar varias etiquetas a un enlace, ya que el add-on funcionaba como un sistema de carpetas. En todo caso, la ventaja de tener los marcadores accesibles desde cualquier lugar me parecía suficiente como para empezar a usarlo.

El salto hace un mes a Ubuntu 8.04 supuso también el salto a Firefox 3 beta 5, con la consiguiente incompatibilidad de todos los add-ons que tenía instalados, entre ellos, el de GB. Eso, y la sospecha infundada de que del.icio.us habría desarrollado ya un add-on compatible con FF3, me llevó a probar esta plataforma. Ese add-on no ha estado disponible hasta hace unos días.

Del.icio.us me ha parecido bastante más versatil que GB, y me quedo ya con él:

1. la importación de los marcadores de GB es sencilla, lo que facilita la migración a la plataforma. También es posible la importación de los marcadores del navegador.
2. permite organizar las etiquetas en grupos (bundles)
3. permite compartir tus marcadores (de ahí, que sean sociales, GB creo que no permite)
4. permite crear tu propia red con otros "del.icio.us'ers". Eso permite ver los últimos marcadores guardados por los miembros de tu red, o pasarles determinado marcador tuyo que consideres que puede ser interesante.
5. permite búsquedas de varias etiquetas (ejemplo, alquiler+vivienda)
6. te puedes suscribir a determinadas etiquetas (o combinaciones), de manera que todo lo que se etiquete de determinada manera, te va a llegar.

Pues bien, casualmente la semana pasada Loretahur y Ketari hicieron hecho pública la nueva "nireidea": Niremap, un sistema de marcación social georeferenciada. Desde ayer soy betatester de este sistema, del que me estoy llevando muy buena impresión.

Total, que entre unos y otros, se me ocurren algunas ideas para ¿mejorar? estas plataformas.

1. los tags geográficos deberían hacer referencia, no solo a puntos concretos del mapa, sino a unidades administrativas. Por ejemplo, yo podría etiquetar una url en la Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, y el sistema me la tendría que mostrar si pidiese info de Vitoria, Alava, País Vasco, España, Europa.... Es decir, este post mío debería salir en las búsquedas "Virgen Blanca", pero también en "Vitoria+concentración". Eso implica que tiene que haber un sistema automático de marcado, en el que si yo etiqueto como "Virgen Blanca, Vitoria", el sistema añade las etiquetas Vitoria, Alava, Euskadi... Es decir, sería una especie de etiquetado taxonómico geográfico.
2. Se debería poder poner varios tags geográficos para artículos que, por ejemplo, hablen de la política de viviendas vacías en distintos países europeos (España, Francia, Reino Unido...)
3. Traducción de etiquetas. Una de las cualidades diferenciales de nire* es que está disponible en idiomas que se hablan en lugares cuya existencia yo desconocía. Eso facilita hacer un diccionario de traducción de tags, de manera que si yo busco "alquiler", me puede aparecer también rent, aluger... Esto implica que tiene que haber una búsqueda avanzada para afinarla, porque con una sola etiqueta podrían aparecer listados enormes de resultados.
4. Diccionario de sinónimos. El problema de las etiquetas es que cada uno tiene un estilo y una terminología. Lo que yo puedo etiquetar como web2.0 otro lo etiquetará como web-2.0, internet20, internet2.0, 2.0, dospuntozero,... Pues bien, sería de mucha ayuda que en las búsquedas de web2.0 aparecieran todas las etiquetas equivalentes. La construcción de ese diccionario de sinónimos podría ser colaborativa.
5. Una cosa mejorable de del.icio.us es poder compartir o no por etiquetas (ahora permite compartir o no url's, pero no todo lo que tenga determinada etiqueta). Por ejemplo, supongamos que estoy trabajando en un proyecto determinado que no puedo hacer público, y que todos los marcadores relacionados con ese proyecto tiene una determinada etiqueta. Esa etiqueta podría definirse como "no compartida".
6. No se por qué, hay sistemas que te permiten etiquetas con espacio separadas por coma  y otros separan con espacio. Entre las primeras, wordpress, y entre los segundos, del.icio.us, youtube... Yo prefiero separar con comas y que se permitan espacios en las etiquetas.
7. Sería muy interesante poder incluir comentarios en los marcadores. Por ejemplo, si yo guardo un marcador que tienen otras 200 personas, cada uno de nosotros (y los visitantes de ese enlace) podríamos hacer un comentario en el link, aportando la opinión sobre el mismo, e incluso entablando ahí conversaciones.
8. Yo, que soy un poco narcisita, necesito estadísticas de visitas en mi página de marcadores sociales.

Bueno, por hoy, no más ideas. ¿Alguien coje el guante?

• Click "Totally Original, I Swear."
• Click "My Profile" (upper right-hand corner).
• Click on the "1 digg" button; copy the URL.
• Paste URL into blog post--and put [digg=insert URL] around URL.
• Click "Save."

I ben informati sapranno già di che cosa parlo; per chi ne sa meno deve sapere che Iceweasel è una versione modificata di Firefox per Debian Linux, mentre la google toolbar è uno strumento messo a disposizione da google per promuovere/integrare l'uso quotidiano di alcuni suoi prodotti (mail, bookmarks, news, traduzioni e la classica ricerca).

Quello che può succedere è che la google toolbar, pur potendosi installare senza problemi sul browser debianizzato, dà alcune noie con i bookmarks; in pratica non vengono mai caricati e spesso appare l'irritante messaggio di download dei medesimi ma senza mai dare soddisfazione.

Per risolvere temporaneamente (speriamo!) questo inconveniente, è possibile utilizzare una estensione di firefox (quindi compatibile, come tutte, con Iceweasel) chiamata gbookmarks.
Questa simpatica estensione è stata sviluppata con lo scopo di integrare una voce nel menu di Firefox/Iceweasel e poter accedere ai bookmarks di google senza dover usare la toolbar di google; baipassando quindi il problema alla radice: niente più google toolbar!

La procedura, per chi non sa dove sbattere la pigna, è la seguente:

1. andate sul sito dello sviluppatore dell'estensione: http://www.rjonna.com/ext/gbookmarks.php
2. cliccate su "Download it here"
3. a questo punto il vostro browser vi dirà che il sito ha tentato di installare un software e lo ha bloccato
   1. cliccate su "Modifica opzioni..."
   2. inserite il sito tra i siti abilitati
4. cliccare ancora "Download it here"
5. dalla finestra che appare cliccare su "Installa"

Finito, chiudete e riavviate il browser; al riavvio troverete la voce gbookmarks tra i menu presenti in alto, non vi resta che impostare il vostro usernare e password dal suo menu opzioni e salvare.

Adesso avrete sempre sotto mano i vostri bookmarks senza alcun problema.

• It files the page under a notebook (major classification catagory, like Marketing Planning) and I can use "Labels" (same as Tags, although there is a bug in Notebook that makes me have to open the label box twice before I can use it properly)
• If I somehow stumble across this page at another time I automatically know that it is already bookmarked because the title is hilited (I never notice the "bookmark" yellow star in the browser menu so this ads "redundency")

There is an issue though. Since I use Google Reader to receive blog, news and site updates I would like to know, within my reader, whether I've already Notebooked the page or not! I don't want to star or label anything in Reader....this creates double work.

Perhaps the brainiacs at Google are already working on this crossover feature/service.

Then from Safari, export the bookmarks to an HTML file.

Then return to Camino and import the bookmarks from an HTML file (File menu > Import Bookmarks > Select a File [from the drop down box] and select the Safari bookmarks.html file that you just created).

Now, I should point out that part of me has always been a "techie" by nature and in the past, there have been very few issues with computers (which I usually assemble myself from custom parts) that I couldn't resolve. I spent hours on this one trying every trick of the trade. To cut a long story short, it turned out to be more serious than I thought (malfunctioning hardware issue- overheated video card that corrupted my system files and most of my hard drive).

The point of this post however, is that even though I was without a laptop, the technological gateway to my work, I managed not to have it impact my work nearly as much as in the past.

Why is that? Answer: social media + public computer with internet access.

Here's some common social media applications that helped me get through my work week without my own laptop:

• Experts-Exchange :Even though I know quite a bit of technical stuff, I decided to tap into this amazing computer technical support knowledge community. I posted a question about my computer problem and within minutes I had people literally competing to respond to me with the best answer (they get authority/expert points similar to that of LinkedIn). I received some great ideas on how to recover 2.5" corrupt laptop HD's that ended up working flawlessly.
• Twitter : This great little micro-blogging platform let me quickly inform regular subscribers to my blogs that I am having some tech issues and will be a little behind in everything I do until further notice.
• Google Bookmarks : Even though I also use other social bookmarking tools such as Del.icio.us for specific purposes, I found the most use out of Google Bookmarks, which loaded up my entire bookmark collection (personal and business). This made my web user interface exactly the same as on my laptop.
• Plaxo: Since my Outlook Calendar files were not backed up, my only resort was looking at my Plaxo account calendar which I had set-up to automatically synchronize with my Outlook calendar. All my meetings and appointments were salvaged.
• Google Reader : I shouldn't even have to explain this one. Logging into my Google Account and browsing all my RSS feeds made me feel like I wasn't missing a beat.

I should also add that I spent some time listening to my favorite blogs and podcasts (see my Blog Roll) trying to figure out which laptop to buy now that mine was toast (ordering the part alone would take weeks, which I didn't have). I finally decided to go with a loaded Dell XPS 1330 based on many direct and indirect recommendations from the online community.

Now I play the waiting game...arrival of my new laptop is scheduled for Decemebr 10th, I've been told that Dell usually beats it's promise by a few days. I hope this will be true in my case as well (RichardatDell, feel free to pull some strings! lol).

Until then, I'm fine using any computer I find, anywhere I am.

As I see it, the biggest shortcoming of social-networking sites is their inability to play well with others. Between MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tribe, Pownce, and the numerous also-rans, it seems as if maintaining an active presence at all of these sites could erode into becoming a full-time job. If Google can somehow create a means for all of these services to work together, and seamlessly interact with the Google family, then perhaps this is the killer app that people don't even realize they've been waiting for. Some might take issue at Wolf's presumption. Many of us have realised in 1997 that the "killer app" for social networking services is for them to work together. But the point is incredibly important and needs to be made again and again.

Social Networking Services work when people connect through it. The most intricate "network effect" you can think of. For connections to work, existing social relationships and potential social relationships need to be represented in the SNS as easily as possible. What's more, investing effort and time in building one's network relates quite directly with the prospective life of SNS. Faced with the eventuality of losing all connections in a snap because everybody has gone to "the next thing," the typical SNS user is wary. Given the impression that SNS links can survive the jump to "the next one" (say, via a simple "import" function), the typical SNS user is likely to use the SNS to its fullest potential. This is probably one of several reasons for the success of Facebook. And Google can certainly put something together which benefits from this principle.

Yeah, yeah, Wolf  was referring more specifically to the "synchronisation" of activities on different SNS or SNS-like systems. That's an important aspect of the overall "SNS interoperability" issue. Especially if SNS are important parts of people's lives. But I prefer to think about the whole picture.

Another thing which has been mentioned is the connection Google could make between SNS and its other tools. One approach would be to build more "social networking features" (beyond sharing) into its existing services. The other could be to integrate Google tools into SNS (say, top-notch Facebook applications). Taken together, these two approaches would greatly benefit both Google and the field of social networking in general.

All in all, what I could easily see would be a way for me to bring all my SNS "content" to a Google SNS, including existing links. From a Google SNS, I would be able to use different "social-enabled" tools from Google like the new Gmail, an improved version of Google Documents, and the Blogger blogging platform. Eventually, most of my online activities would be facilitated by Google but I would still be able to use non-Google tools as I wish.

There's a few tools I'm already thinking about, which could make sense in this "Google-enabled social platform." For one, the "ultimate social bookmarking tool" for which I've been building feature wishlists. Then, there's the obvious need for diverse applications which can use a centralised online storage system. Or the browser integration possible with something like, I don't know, the Google toolbar... ;-)

Given my interest in educational technology, I can't help but think about online systems for course management (like Moodle and Sakai). Probably too specific, but Google could do a wonderful job at it.

Many people are certainly thinking about advertisement, revenue-sharing, p2p for media files, and other Google-friendly concepts. These aren't that important for me.

I can't say that I have a very clear image of what Google's involvement in the "social networking sphere" will look like. But I can easily start listing Google products and features which are desperately calling for integration in a social context: Scholar, Web History, Docs, Reader, Browser Sync, Gcal, Gmail, Notebook, News, Mobile, YouTube, Ride Finder, Blog Comments, Music Trends, University Search, MeasureMap, Groups, Alerts, Bookmarks...

Sometimes, I really wonder why a company like Google can't "get its act together" in making everything it does fit in a simple platform. They have the experts, the money, the users. They just need to make it happen.

Si utilizás el servicio Google Bookmarks para almacenar tus páginas y links favoritos en la web, podés exportar todos tus marcadores (bookmarks) a un archivo html que luego podés importar en Internet Explorer o en Firefox.

También podés exportar tus marcadores para realizar un backup o copia de seguridad que evite que se pierdan en un accidente.

Para exportar tus marcadores o bookmards de Google, tenés que hacer lo siguiente:

1) Ingresar a Google Bookmarks con tu usuario y contraseña correspondiente.

2) Una vez que hayas ingresado, escribí en la barra de direcciones de Internet Explorer o de Firefox la siguiente dirección:

http://www.google.com/bookmarks/bookmarks.html

3) A continuación guardá el archivo GoogleBookmarks.html en la carpeta que desees de tu PC.

Ya tenés una copia de todos tus marcadores de Google en tu disco.

Anyone who has a Google account for Gmail, Adwords, Adsense, Analytics etc is by default shown personalized results until you turn it off. (Have you noticed a HUGE jump in your search engine rankings lately? Make sure you have personalized search turned off or you sign out of your account). The change is good news for searchers. It's also good news for site owners with good content, who should get rewarded by visits. That's especially so if you try these tips:

* Titles & Descriptions are crucial: You need the clickthrough more than ever. Clickthroughs get your site as seen as possibly important to a particular person's profile.

* Get on the Google personalized homepages of searchers. That means offering them a feed or a gadget and encouraging take-up with an Add To Google buttons.

* Put Google Bookmark buttons on your site, such as the one offered by AddThis. Getting bookmarked also helps you be seen as important.

If you haven't heard, Google has come out with its own bookmarking tool called...drumroll please..."Google Bookmarks." (Good thing Google bought YouTube, otherwise it would have been called "Google Video Upload" or something equally boringly branded -- though "Blogger" was very 2.0 :D )

What you bookmark with Google Bookmarks can influence what search engine results you see. So encouraging people to Google Bookmark your site (could they just call it "Booger?")...ahem. So making it easy for someone to Booger your e-commerce department store when they view your "Farrah Fawcett lunchbox" could help your site rank well for a future search by this user for "oven mitts" and perhaps boost your relevance for other searchers looking for Farrah food storage items too by virtue of how that first searcher tagged your site.

This could get very interesting. Perhaps Google Bookmarks are the new reciprocal links...I wonder how long it takes before webmasters are trading Boogers with eachother?
