At St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Pottstown, the parish is taking a long view of recycling ... a centuries-long view.

[caption id="attachment_1336" align="aligncenter" width="288" caption="Stones from a church rectory will be recycled."][/caption]

The parish, affectionately known to its congregation as "St. Al's," traditionally includes Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township and Sanatoga in its service area. It's begun building a new parishioners' center on the north side of the church, at the corner of Hanover and Beech Streets, Pottstown, that features ample gathering space and access for the disabled. But as St Al's former rectory was being razed last month to make way for the new construction, it yielded a surprise.

Contractors determined the rectory, built during the early 1900s, was erected by masons using stones that remained from the church's original construction in 1891. Their 117-year-old act of recycling will be repeated, St. Al's pastor, the Rev. Walter J. Benn, announced Sunday (Oct. 5, 2008) during the 7 a.m. Mass.

Benn noted the stones had been carefully placed on pallets at the construction sites and covered with plastic sheeting for protection. They will be used once again, later in 2009, to build a shrine grotto at the rear of the new building. "It's exciting," he said of the discovery.

A traditional fountain is an arrangement where water issues from a source, fills a basin of some kind, and is drained away. Fountains may be wall fountains or freestanding. In fountains, sheets of water may flow over varied surfaces of stone, concrete or metal. Basins may overflow from one into another, or the overflow may imitate a natural cascade. Many fountains are located in small, artificial, ornamental ponds, basins and formal garden pools, and often they include sculpture.

One of the most common features of a fountain, if there is enough pressure, is one or more jets, in which water is forced into the air under pressure to some height. A famous example of such a modern fountain rises from the surface of Lake Geneva.

Early fountains depended on the natural gravitational flow of water, from a spring or aqueduct supplied by a distant and higher source of water, which provided hydraulic head.

Hellenistic hydraulic engineers employed great originality in designing fountains, where the water pressure might be employed to animate automata and water organs.

Iraqi engineer and inventor al-Jazari first described reciprocating motion in 1206 when the kings of the Artuqid dynasty in Turkey commissioned him to manufacture a machine to raise water for their palaces. The finest result was a machine called the double-acting reciprocating piston pump, which translated rotary motion to reciprocating motion via the crankshaft-connecting rod mechanism.

Other early fountains were geometrically regularized springs, developed in the classic Persian garden. These gardens were typically enclosed and were designed to provide relaxation. The effect of sunlight was the main concern regarding the structural aspect of the Persian garden design. Shapes and textures were specifically chosen for their ability to direct sunlight. In the 16th century, elaborate fountain displays were garden features of Mannerist gardens of Central Italy and the Mughal gardens of India.

Early Modern English employed fountain to refer to a natural spring water or source, which the 16th century garden fountain might consciously imitate in a grotto.

Christian allegory made much use of the concept of the fountain, specifically the Fountain of Life, associated with the rebirth that was intended to be experienced at the Baptismal font. The Fountain of Life appears in Christian illuminated manuscripts of Late Antiquity, and elaborate Gothic fountains formed centerpieces for enclosed gardens. An offshoot of the Fountain of Life was the legend of the Fountain of Youth, which Juan Ponce de León sought in Florida. From the Fountain of Youth one can drink to gain immortality, or to regain one's youth.

The practical Romans marked the delivery end of aqueducts with a public fountain, a practice that was revived in Rome in the 15th century, when the restored Aqua Felice once more delivered a symbolic presentation of its waters to Rome in the original Trevi Fountain, since replaced by the familiar Baroque fusion of water, architecture and sculpture.

Animated fountains often use laminar jets that provide water that moves like ping pong balls in animation, so that it breaks up, as the height varies, and the behavior of each jet operates independently with up to 5 Hz modulation frequency (1/5 second), so that the water packets collide with themselves. For example, such fountains can spit up one ball of water, which then explodes, showering people with a fine mist.

A musical fountain is a type of fountain that dances in time with recorded or live music, controlled either by a computer or by a live "organist" operating the fountain through a switchboard. Notable examples of this are fountains on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the fountains of the Bellagio in the Las Vegas Strip.

A splash fountain or bathing fountain is a fountain intended for people to cool off in. Although many fountains were not designed as bathing fountains, children of all ages often use them for that purpose. Some fountains are fenced in, or have raised edges as a barricade to keep people out. In other situations, fountains are designed to allow easy access, and feature nonslip surfaces, so that people can safely use them to cool off in on hot summer days.

Splash fountains have zero standing water, to eliminate possible drowning hazards, so that no lifeguards or supervision is required. These splash pads are often located in public pools, public parks, or public playgrounds (known as "spray grounds").

A recent example of a public splash fountain, intended for water play, is the one located in Toronto's Dundas Square. It consists of 600 ground nozzles arranged in groups of 30 (3 rows of 10 nozzles). Each group of 30 nozzles is located beneath a stainless steel grille. Twenty such grilles are arranged in 2 rows of 10, right in the middle of the main walkway through Dundas Square. Both the architects and the designers have confirmed that these were intended for water play, and the facility operators have confirmed that the water is treated to pool water quality standards, and that the health department tests the water quality, at least once a day. The entire surface of Dundas Square is made of special nonslip square granite slabs that match the size of the metal grilles. The special texture on the slabs ensures that they are not slippery when wet.

Spray fountains are designed to serve as a play area where children (and sometimes adults) can run around and cool off under a canopy of water. Spray fountains are becoming popular in areas where the construction of public pools is difficult or costly, such as urban areas. However, spray fountains can also be used to enhance a pool's surrounding play area.

A water fountain or drinking fountain is designed to provide drinking water and has a basin arrangement with either continuously running water or a tap. Modern indoor drinking fountains may incorporate filters to remove impurities from the water and chillers to reduce its temperature. In some regional dialects, water fountains are referred to as bubblers. Water fountains are usually found in public places, like schools, rest areas and grocery stores. Many jurisdictions require water fountains to be wheelchair accessible (by sticking out horizontally from the wall), and to include an additional unit of a lower height for children and short adults. The design that this replaced often had one spout atop a refrigeration unit.

In modern fountains, the traditional gravitational pressure from an unseen reservoir at a higher level is not always practical. In many circumstances fountains obtain their water from a closed, recirculating system that must still be filled at the start from the local water supply system and also topped up through its life to offset the effects of evaporation. Allowance must also be made to handle overflow in the case of heavy rain.

The pressure that causes water to move through the fountain may be produced instead by a motor-driven (often-submersible electric) pump. "Static head" is useful to quantify this pressure.

A water filter, typically a media filter, removes particles from the water -- this filter requires its own pump to force water through it and plumbing to remove the water from the pool to the filter and then back to the pool. The water may need chlorination or anti-algal treatment, or may use biological methods to filter and clean water.

The pumps, filter, electrical switch box and plumbing controls are often housed in a "plant room". Low-voltage lighting, typically 12-volt direct current, is used to minimize electrical hazards. Lighting is often submerged and must be suitably designed. Floating fountains are also popular for ponds and lakes they consist of a float pump nozzle and water chamber.

Many civic fountains in public parks are commissioned in commemoration of either national or public figures.

There are also some limited fountain day celebrations. The University at Albany hosts an annual "Fountain Day," a day on which the university community comes together to celebrate the arrival of spring and the near-end of the semester. Drawing large crowds, the fountain-centered event creates something akin to an urban beach.

A hydraulophone is a fountain that can be played as a musical instrument. These fountains are like woodwind instruments, but using water instead of air. The embouchure of the instrument occurs at the finger holes (referred to as "mouths"). Hydraulophones often have multiple "mouths", so that a player can put each finger into a different mouth at the same time, in order to play chords, while independently manipulating each finger for separate and individual control of the embouchure of each note in a chord. A skilled hydraulist can slightly "bend" each note in order to play just intonation in any desired key, or to gently and fluidly vary intonation or temperament as a piece of music changes from one key to another.

There is a need for good water quality in contemporary fountains, regardless of their avowed intended use. Regardless of the fact that some fountains are designed and built not as bathing fountains, but are rather used simply as architectural decor, people will often drink from, bathe or wash their hands in any fountain. Additionally, fountain spray can contain legionella bacteria and has been linked to Legionnaires ‘disease outbreaks. Therefore, minimum water quality standards are necessary, regardless of intended use. Guidelines have been developed for control of legionella in ornamental fountains.

In theory, a freestanding water feature should not have a bather load, and consequently, many builders would not choose to install filters or sanitation devices. In reality, however, people will interact with ornamental water fountains in the most surprising ways. In Disneyland, for example, people have been reported to change their babies' diapers and then wash their hands in the water fountain (thus adding unexpected bacteria and organics into the water).

In July 1997, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis was connected to an ornamental fountain at the Minnesota Zoo, which did not have proper filtration and water treatment. Children played in fountains and swallowed water, and spurted the water out of their mouths to mimic the way nozzles in the fountain spurted the water. It was therefore necessary to put a fence around the fountain to keep people away.

In the United States fountain operators and owners are legally liable for failure to either fence-in fountains, or to properly filter, chlorinate or otherwise treat the water, if the fountains are not fenced in. If the water is unsafe, fences must be designed to keep people far enough away, so that they cannot touch the water, otherwise children get water on their hands, put their fingers into their mouths, and end up getting sick, thus subjecting owners and operators to legal liability.

If you are interested in adding a fountain to your home or office, Repairfinders.com is the perfect place for you. With many qualified professionals in your area, it will only take a couple of minutes to find the right person for you. Not only will a fountain bring you peace and entertainment it will also bring elegance to your home office.

Yes, yes, I made it to the beach. Without mishap, not counting getting lost. I seem to get lost

Yes, yes, I made it to the beach. Without mishap, not counting getting lost. I seem to get lost quite a bit. My standing joke is that if I cross the river, I get lost, and there are quite a few rivers to cross between Alexandria, VA and Rehoboth, DE. I've been from the same point A to the same point B at least two dozen times in the last seven years, I figure, and I still manage to get lost every time. I suppose I could get in the habit of taking directions with me, since clearly my memory and sense of direction are not to be depended on - or maybe I could take a map to minimize the time spent wondering how far I am from anything I might vaguely recognize... I could tell you it's wanderlust, it's spontaneous and fun to repeatedly have no idea where I am, but in truth it's getting old. Obviously not quite painful enough to merit prior planning, but maybe soon.

So, I made it to the beach. It's overcast and they're saying rain tomorrow, which is very good validation for having sprung for the nice accommodations over the questionably low budget ones. I really did think I wanted to save money on this trip, but at the last minute, with some goading from my therapist, I decided to pull myself up out of my scarcity mentality and at least pretend I'm abundant. I'm staying at the Delaware Inn, where I've stayed dozens of times before. It's lovely, I love it here. Looks like I'll be inside most of the day tomorrow, so I'm very grateful I have a luxurious room rather than a budget one where I'd want to keep my clothes on and lie on top of the sheets.

Hit the pizza and twisty cone straight away. That's Grotto's and Kohr's. They're just as good as I remembered, although the restaurant itself has gotten pretty skeevy. It's full of flies: houseflies, fruit flies, flying ants. I won't go back there.

While I was waiting for my pizza (before I noticed the fly infestation) I was reading "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". There was a line in there that took my breath away. The epitome of Indulgent Health. I had to close the book, sit back, close my eyes and bask in this line. For background, know that the character, Francie, is very poor and always hungry. On rare occasions she'd splurge and treat herself to a pickle:

"The pickle lasted all day. Francie sucked and nibbled on it. She didn't exactly eat it. She just had it."

Doesn't that just end all? "She didn't exactly eat it. She just had it". I tell you what, that's the key. That's how I get away with pizza and twisty cones twice a year when it would be so easy to compulsively eat them all the time. I don't exactly eat them. I spend some time. It's intentional. I have them.

A long, long time ago when I was a senior in high school, I spent a lot of time doing homework in the social studies grotto during my study hall. I'd hang out with my AP Gov and AP Us History teachers and talk about books and movies when I wasn't writing surveys or essays for the Exit Project. My APUSH teacher and I became pretty good friends, and when prom time came around that May, he asked who I was going with. I said I wasn't going and left it at that, but he persisted "But it's your senior year! You have to go to prom! Why aren't you going?!" After three rounds of this I burst into tears and walked to the nearest bathroom until I cooled down.

When I got back to the grotto, the teacher was no long there and everyone else in the room acted as if nothing had happened. A few minutes later, he returned with a Little Debbie oatmeal raisin sandwich from the cafeteria with a little yellow post it note adhered to it that read "I'm sorry!!!" with a smiley face.

I had a little flashback to this today at work. I was all alone at the desk, and someone called asking if they could use the library for a photoshoot. I transferred him to the reference desk but said something about the person I thought he should be transferred to being on vacation, which happened to be a mistake I was unaware of until a few minutes later when my supervisor came over and told me that I wasn't supposed to disclose that kind of thing. Which I understood after she told me the first time, but she said it again, rephrasing it differently, and I started to feel stupid -- then I felt stupid about feeling stupid -- and then I saw my boyfriend walking towards the library with a coffee for me and I burst into tears. In the middle of feeling tears falling down my neck I started apologizing and saying "I don't know why I'm crying" and my boyfriend walked in with this really concerned look. My supervisor stepped behind the desk and started apologizing and then asked if I was going on a break when I was reaching for the back he put in front of me like I was a desperate little kid.

I sat outside, smoked a cigarette, bitched about how dumb I felt that things I didn't know about the library still came up even though I had been working here for about two years, ate a muffin, then went back inside. I told my supervisor I felt stupid, then I explained to her why I cried without excluding the detail that I was annoyed that we were understaffed and that I always got stranded here. Right before I was going to leave to walk dogs, she came in with a paper bag and said it was a brownie cookie.

So apparently crying in front of adults gets me cookies. Great.

Also, I should mention that before I was given a cookie and after I talked to my supervisor, one of the other staff members came over and asked if everything was okay. This almost made me start crying again because obviously it's embarrassing when people notice you were upset about something and it just makes everything worse.

I can feel the sugar compensating already.

The first photo was from Huskisson, a town about 25 minutes drive away (we took nearly 90 thanks to poor directions and no map) where we had lunch. I would have taken more photos but it's like any seaside town, quite depressing in the rain, so I'll wait for a sunnier day.

The last four are all from the "Grotto" a nature area/walk above 5 minutes walk from our current house. Some really spectacular scenery, very calm and quiet. Should help us out in our new attempts at walking.

Right now unfortunately it is absolutely chucking it down, so I'm inside writing this blog post, researching work both here and at home. It's been raining pretty solidly for the last day and last night was a weird experience. Lightning kept flashing through the curtains, but no thunder. So pulling the curtains I was pretty surprised to see a completely clear sky! It's so flat around here the flashes were from lightning miles and miles away, very surreal.

Anyway, hope all is well at home.

P.S. My new glasses arrive on Tuesday so I will be able to read again!

This place is called Grotto of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan. The area is a replica of the famed Lourdes Grotto in France. It is told that matriarch and owner of the place had cancer in the 1960s. And she had decided to go to the Lourdes Grotto to seek help for her condition. Apparently she did receive a miracle, and was free of the disease. Since then, she vowed to put up a similar place. And for many years, many Filipinos have visited the place as pilgrims, and have even claimed miracles as well because of the healing water that gushes out from the place. Even at the main grotto site, one can see hundreds of crutches left behind by people who apparently can now walk well.

The place particularly during Good Friday is teeming with people. They do their Holy Week obligation by praying the Stations of the Cross passing through all 14 stations with life size statues. And there is the Rosary Hill where one can have a face to face encounter with the figure of Christ himself. And in this place, one can be overwhelmed by the majesty of its still unfinished church. As one walks the hilly paths under the heat of the sun, there is undeniable sense of the passion for religiosity and faith, a mark distinctive to many Filipinos.

Just to catch up, I actually created a new encaustic and framed this..... hope you like it?

It's called Blue Grotto. When looking into this painting you can just sense the magical feeling of being a spectator within the blue grotto making you feel all tingly. Life is so cool here, away from the troubles of the world.

At the front gate of our urban farm, the arms of an organically shaped grotto pull you towards the cave from which Our Lady of Guadalupe emerges. She creates a portal between the busy street life and the sanctuary within. She protects our home by blessing our neighbors. Whats more, she bridges my devout Pagan following with my neighbors' dominantly beloved Catholicism. As the religions bumped together two thousand years ago, the Christian's Mother Mary took on the same iconic divinity as the Egyptian Goddess Isis. So the sculpture is accurately dedicated to both Isis and Our Lady of Guadalupe in thanks for the birth of our healthy son.

I made the sculpture from cob, a versatile material made by mixing equal parts (thirds) of clay, sand, and organic materials (I used straw). Cob structures are built in layers, 2-4 inches at a time that dry enough to keep its form under the weight of the new wet layer. This allows builders great flexibility and creativity when using this material (for example, years back, I built a wood burning oven with two pot openings from cob). Also, builders can gather these simple materials locally at very little cost. On a less appealing note, cob requires a great deal of labor to mix the materials evenly and at the right consistency so I personally hesitate to plan any large project with cob. I made the sculpture in winter when it felt good to warm up and challenge my body with outdoor exercise. It took six weeks of steady work.

I used a level to lay an even foundation with bricks. Then, on my husband Bard's wise suggestion, I made my foundation in the shape of a mushroom. Imitating patterns in nature at the foundation allowed the structure to grow very organically. I set a glass jar into the base so it could hold cut flowers. I used a large potting bowl to hold the shape of the grotto until complete. Then I stuccoed the outside and Bard cemented in the sculpture of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All in all, the completed grotto cost only $80 and lot of labor of love.

I’m outside this morning working on the pond. I decided to go ahead and cut the liner out so I could figure out what was underneath and know how to continue. As a reminder, I want to make a smaller pond just around the waterfall area, and then fill in the bigger part with dirt and put pavers on the top and create a little sanctuary to sit and read and meditate there under the trees.
Here's the pond, empty, looking from the back fence toward the house. You can see my new tropical inspired flower bed in the foreground, with plants eagerly trying to grow and fill in the spaces. The pond is to the right side; a significant feature in the yard, with a bridge and waterfall. Counting the waterfall, it is nearly 20' in length.

Here's a view of the empty pond from the other end of it; to give you some perspective, you are looking at about 12 feet of pond length there, about 5' wide at the widest point. Sorry for the lousy lighting, I hope you can see the rubber liner, the gunk on the bottom and the daunting task that lay ahead of me.

Here's the currently dry waterfall feature: this is the part I'm going to keep, with a small pond at the foot for recirculation.

I'm envisioning a lovely outdoor lounge chair in the newly filled in large area, mosquito netting draped gracefully over the top, container plants flowering around, and beautiful rock pavers making the floor, all while reading a book in the fall and spring, watching the waterfall flow ahead of where I would be sitting and facing.

So in order to create that picture, I first had to cut away the old rubber liner in the big part of the pond. As I started cutting it away this morning, I discovered an amazing treasure! I assumed that the walls of the pond had been built by owners long ago using ugly cement cinderblocks for support, with only rocks on the top where it showed. (Even the pond people that I had come out to give estimates and consultations assumed that from how it looked).

As I cut away the liner, I discovered a GORGEOUS rock wall, about 18” high, all the way around the entire pond, including a rock floor! The original people who put in this pond really had something beautiful! It looks like a grotto pool. I'm shocked and excited and confused.

Here's the progress picture: you can see the rubber liner and gunk at the bottom of the pond still; I need help removing that part, but it is stone underneath. The stone isn't smooth like a patio, but rough like Barton Springs. You can also see the liner still adhering to the rock wall a bit along the top; I'll have to clean all that out. (My apologies again for the lighting; it was a bad time of day for pictures, but oh well)...

Now I’m torn – what should I do? Obviously, it leaked so badly that they put rubber liner to cover it (in fact I found TWO layers of liner underneath, kinda like wallpaper removal, I guess). So I still want to proceed with making a small waterfall area and not use the entire pond for water, since it would leak everywhere and still be a problem.

However, I don’t want to take down or cover up those beautiful rock walls. If I make it into a patio down low in the ground, I guess I could build steps going down into it, but I would have to take down a part of it so it would drain and not hold standing water. Would that be odd to have a patio lower than the rest of my garden? The rest of my yard is quite flat. What else can I do besides that idea? I feel like I just uncovered buried treasure it my yard!

Here's the new rock walls, closer:

So the big question is: obviously the rock pond leaked in the past. If I put a patio down low, at the bottom of it, do you think it will hold rainwater or will it drain quickly enough that it won't be an issue? I'm no engineer, so I'm open to all suggestions!
