we are enjoying our garden! though it looks like a big of a jungle (just not big enough), it still puts out some great tomatoes and broccoli. and cucumbers too. next time we are only going to do 1 tomato bush with a higher trellis. it was too hot for the sugar snap peas, so we'll have to try them again in cooler weather.

big difference from back in may when we had the hail storm. the shade cloth colapsed on part of the tomato plants and you can barely see the rest because all the leaves were torn off. we didn't know if our little garden would make it, but it did!

Alas, the good weather was actually in retreat as a low pressure system moved in from the Atlantic, bringing a cold front with it.

When I turned to the west and south-west, conditions were rather more threatening. The cold front was pushing into the warm air rising off the hills, which had been warmed by the sun all morning. As I worked, I kept an eye and ear to the west as the serried ranks of clouds, sporadic rain squalls and distant rumblings of thunder marched ever closer.

The breeze was little more than a light air at ground level (200-220 metres above sea level), but there were clearly much, much stronger winds at altitude as the clouds were moving closer faster than I could swing the scythe.
I was lashed with hail and rain as I cut the last few metres of potatoes, then I sprinted for the house as sheets of lightning lit up the clouds from within and the sky boomed with thunder. Within minutes of the storm hitting, the water butts had filled to overflowing, the guttering had cascades of water falling from its entire length, and rivulets were flowing everywhere. I changed into my waterproofs and, rather warily, ventured back into the storm to feed the animals—most of which rather sensibly wanted to be fed inside their housing while I splashed about outside.

WOW!! A hail storm in Kenya!?? A HAIL STORM in KENYA!?
I'm from Buffalo, NY where we expect hail, snow, blizzards and the likes, but if Kenya can get a hail storm in September, or any month of the year for that matter, which is totally bizarre, then as a Buffalo resident, I plan on wearing shorts all winter long in 08. I'm expecting 80 degree readings in Buffalo this winter if Kenya is getting hail.

Oh, and while things are going haywire, I may as well throw this in: "The Bills will win the Super Bowl in 2009."
LOL!!

Several months back my Mom's and Dad's house received storm damage on the roof, from hail, and wind. Thankfully their insurance covered most of the cost of the damage, and Mom and Dad decided they wanted to put a metal roof on the house, but needed to save some money, and asked the kids, and their spouses if we would all help put it on.

I went with my Dad and brother to pick up the metal roofing materials, and we brought it back to the house to await the day to put it on; hopefully a day that would be cooler than the heat of July or August. We waited for my sister's husband to make the call, because he had some experience in putting on metal roofing, and none of the rest of us did. He called for Saturday August 30 to be that day.

He called for 8:00 a.m as a start time, and after getting some things on the roof lined out, and measuring made which needed made, lines drawn and that; we finally about 8:30 we were underway. There were three on the roof, eventually four, and working both sides of the house. Allen, my brother in law, their son Toby, and their son in law Justin putting down the metal. While they stayed on the roof, my son Timothy, Sam our son in law, and Paul our son in law drilled holes in the metal for the screws, which sped up the process.

Our wives were all around and prepared lunch. We barbecued hamburgers, hotdogs, and had sweet iced tea, and sodas to drink. Would you believe that by lunch time the roof was finished; at least we had the main roofing material down. Dad had forgotten to order the edging, and so we wait to put on the ridge cap until that is gotten.

From 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. we all stayed busy preparing the metal for application, and those on the roof applying it. It is amazing what people can do when they get together and work together, without anyone trying to be boss, but those who don't know what to do listen and learn, and then do.

I am not saying we are a perfect family. We are far from that; but we do all get along fairly well. At least when we really try.

It is always great to get together with family, and accomplish a good work. Mom and Dad are really appreciative. I thank the Lord for giving me such a great set of parents and the wife and children and grandchildren He has give us.

We took the kids to the Y to swim a little bit and after naps we dressed in Ohio State Logos and picked up some FREE Chik-Fil-A strips. I will admit...they were bigger than I expected! We didn't even eat them all ( we didn't throw them out, they're in the fridge). I actually wanted the Chicken Caesar wrap so we did actually BUY something. And this afternoon or early evening Joel mowed the front lawn and was cleaning out the gutters or something on the roof. Which brings me to the topic of hail damage.

I lost you there. Right? Well, July 26th our area was hit heavy by hail. Possibly the worst hail I can ever remember seeing and I haven't seen very many hail storms. Here, I'll put a picture of our backyard on here for you.

[caption id="attachment_98" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Hail in our yard."][/caption]

Anyways...we scrambled around getting the kids into the van (which was safe in the garage) so we could move it and make room for Joel's car. Joel got hit on the head, his car has a claim for damage (we didn't check the van:) but I know it was hit when I was moving it over to make room for Joel's car.

I really really didn't expect there to be any significant damage to the house though. However, after seeing "roofer" signs and the like popping up all over our neighborhood and nearby...I was not so sure what we would find on the roof. So I started calling the insurance company and a roofing company... oh and let me add that before I started that the roofer-people were knocking on our door, sending us stuff in the mail. Apparently they knew something I didn't. Sure enough...with both roofer salesman and ins. adjuster looking at and consulting together about our roof the verdict came in...we qualify for a NEW roof among other details of the house that were damaged but not necessarily covered 100%. So, we're getting a new roof! I can only hope and pray that this will help us sell our house for the asking price should we ever decide to move!

The weather has taken a turn for the worse. Saturday saw Cape Town experience one of the worst storms in a long while and on Sunday it hailed! You would never guess that a couple of weeks ago the sun baked down on our little garden making flowers bloom and buds turn green.
Since getting my new camera I cant resist photographing everything that happens in the garden - in the nick of time Alexis grabbed a fist full of the hail before it melted.

Well it was a much quieter day than yesterday for much of South Texas.San Antonio was one of the lucky areas that actually saw rain and storms today. Around 7pm the Nat'l Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southern Bexar, Northern Atascosa and Southwestern Wilson Counties. High winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning prompted the warning. There was several reports of nickle size hail and large trees down along Tejeda road. Vipir 24/7 Indicated some rotation is this storm but there was no Tornado Warnings issued and no one confirmed any tornadoes touching down.

Okay, so a clear theme on this blog is the weather. i can’t help it, it is so different here.

Okay, so a clear theme on this blog is the weather. i can't help it, it is so different here. Last night was what I consider our first REAL thunderstorm in Colorado. There was even a Severe Thunderstorm Warning...exciting!!! At 4am we woke up (I almost always sleep through thunderstorms) to the tap-tap-tttap of hail on the windows and roof. The hail actually lasted for over 2 minutes, long enough to lay in bed, realize what that noise was, marvel at its intensity, get freaked out by the increased intensity, get out of bed and look out the windows and then discover our ceiling leaking on the carpet. NICE...so a perfunctory call to the landlord was made, because HELLO leaking ceiling!!! Don't worry though, based on the charming water damage spots in the ceiling I knew it was only a matter of time before the ceiling collapsed on us and placed furniture away from the offending spots. One day I will post about all the problems we have had with this house. Thank god for renter's insurance.

There was enough hail to pile up in places so that it almost looked like snow...in August, shoot me now. The hail was only pea-sized, maybe two peas-sized, coupled with an actual downpour and sufficient lightning. Sorry no photo, I was pretty much focused on making sure we weren't going to die or suffer property damage, and getting back into bed.

One of the major differences here, is the after-effects of 1-2 inches of rain. Actually even a much lower amount. Because there is no grass, trees, etc. There is a real problem with flash-flooding. Now of course we have that back home, with the occasional creek over-topping its banks, maybe your basement gets flooded or a low lying road is blocked. But out here it is a lot faster, and seem a lot more dangerous. The other day a very small rainstorm washed out an entire roadway near here. Every open field has deep ditch/canyons called arroyos that snake across the land, heck we even have a mini-ditch that runs though our front yard. It's just that water comes fast and doesn't have anywhere to go. Plus all the mountains...that too. I will take pictures next time I get a chance.

Thursday's weather picture wasn't your typical severe weather environment but we still managed to have several severe thunderstorms and even some funnel cloud reports in southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa during the afternoon and early evening hours. The local thunderstorm activity for the day formed from a small, intense thunderstorm cell in southern Goodhue County that quickly slid southward into Olmsted County and the Rochester area and later expanded into a cluster of thunderstorms that engulfed a large portion of the area, producing a wide range of rainfall totals. Here is a look at some of the local storm reports from the National Weather Service in La Crosse:

Hail. Hail the size of nickels bounced off the green green grass. Hopping like hundreds of snow white frogs. My cast, a hodgepodge of amateur thespians, stared in wonder and horror at nature's bounty. Several came dashing out into the lawn to feel the balls bouncing off their heads and shoulders, picking them up to examine their size and heft. Hail truly is made up of small balls of ice. Ice formed high above our heads, just waiting to crash down and rain out a rehearsal.

My mommy's voice. I dozed in the rocker as she read to our child. My child. But our child. My daughter. But our daughter. And I realized that not only is my mother's embrace the best in the world, but her voice is the most comforting sound I could recall. Her read-aloud voice. It ebbs and flows like an ocean, full of rich undertones, soft secrets, and hidden surprises. It is the voice of knowledge, love, home, and bravery. I could listen to my mommy read aloud forever.

A sandwich. A sandwich made of hummus infused with all sorts of delicious and rarely tasted spices. smothered in a delicacy of vegetables. Encased in wheat bread. Yes. Wheat. The forbidden grain. And I ate with gusto. I ate with dread. This grain could send me into waves of nausea, doubled up in pain. It didn't. And it won't. And my body breaths a sigh of relief because I sure love my bread.

Soft cool cheek. She pressed her cheek up against mine as I carried her through the damp night. Put to sleep at her baby-sitter's, picked up by me, deep into the night, at the end of rehearsal. She whimpered slightly when I tucked her into the car seat. She did not expect a cold, hard car seat after mama's warm embrace. Only the car in motion lulled her back to sleep. Back home, confused, we drank some milk and sank into her rocking chair to cuddle, sing, hum, and breath her back to her dreams.

And I am left alone. Staring at the clock on my computer screen, knowing full well I have broken my promise to myself to be asleep by now because I was busy searching for something to write. What I don't know is if I was searching for something for you, reader, or for me, author. For whom do I actually write?

Yes, hail. There was a hail-freaking-storm today, August 11 2008. Hail and rain and lightning and gutter streams strong enough to carry paper plates. Connie disconnected internet while it was going, so I read more of House of Leaves during it. It was so dark, a lamp was an absolute must. Blasted weather.

Oh, and it's raining now, and it did yesterday, too. Wheeeeeee.

Although, really, I do rather like rain. The earth feels cleansed after a good downpour.

That's the current Slovenian Tourist Board's slogan. My first run-in with the notorious hail that falls from the sky around these parts brought it to life quite vividly (as lorax reminded me) on Friday and also helped me make up my mind as to whether I should keep my car for another year.

The slogan, or brand, was introduced a few years ago. The official rationalization behind the slogan is here; mention of hailstorms is conspicuously missing.
