Si è svolto a Nyon, in Svizzera, il sorteggio della fase a gruppi di Coppa Uefa, in programma dal 23 ottobre al 17-18 dicembre. Il Milan è stato inserito nel gruppo E con Heerenveen, Braga, Portsmouth e Wolfsburg. Nel gruppo C con la Sampdoria ci sono Stoccarda, Siviglia, Partizan Belgrado e Standard Liegi. Nel gruppo D l'Udinese se la vedrà con Tottenham, Spartak Mosca, Dinamo Zagabria e Nec Nimega.

Ogni club giocherà due partite in casa e altrettante in trasferta. La fase a gironi si svolgerà dal 23 ottobre al 18 dicembre. Le prime 3 di ogni gruppo più le 8 terze dei gironi di Champions comporranno i 16esimi di finale. La finale si disputerà a Istanbul il 20 maggio.

FINLAND PLAYED without Jari Litmanen and scored three times against the second best team in Europe. Whatever else comes from the first game of the World Cup qualification campaign, that should be remembered. Litmanen's fitness has been a dominating theme in the build up to a lot of Finland matches in recent years.

When plans for a statue of Litmanen were discussed in Lahti, wags cruelly suggested that the sculpture should have a glass ankle, so that it could again be broken and remoulded and journalists could fill their word counts by once more guessing the state of Litmanen's leg.

Finland coach Stuart Baxter had attempted to draw a line under such speculation by clearly setting out the criteria Litmanen would have to meet before being selected for the national side.

The jist was that Litmanen would have to be playing regularly for his club side, and it was this stipulation that led the former Ajax striker to sign for his home town club, FC Lahti, for the end of the Finnish season. He missed out on the Germany game through a bout of flu.

Litmanen is a legend, and is welcome in the Finnish squad, but if he is not fit and in-form then the national side has to have another plan. And what a plan they now have, under a coach favouring a more expansive style than the one employed by the often dour Roy Hodgson.

The Finnish midfield was rejuvenated, breaking forward from midfield and playing early balls for strikers Jonatan Johansson and Mikael Forsell to run onto. Mika Väyrynen was particularly impressive, pinging in the second goal and setting up Daniel Sjölund for the third.

Väyrynen's situation encapsulates the lot of the Finnish footballer. He left his home country aged just nineteen, and after a successful four years at Heerenveen he got his big move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.

Injuries at crucial times hampered his career at PSV, and after three years there he has now returned to Heerenveen, where the club's management are less able to replace injured players with big new signings.

Finns are far away from home, if they are successful, and can lack allies when team selection becomes political. For instance Sami Hyypiä, omitted from Liverpool's Champions League squad because of UEFA's new quota system for home-grown players, is at a clear disadvantage because he is not playing in his home country.

Swedish players have this option at a much earlier stage than Finns, and often take advantage of it. Henrik larsson moved from Barcelona to Helsingborg, and has since played two full seasons there as well as playing for the national side, and Anders Svensson rejuvenated his international career after moving back to IF Elfsborg at the age of 29.

It would be difficult to imagine a Finnish player similarly changing perceptions and cementing a career in the national side from a Veikkausliiga club. The Swedish squad for their recent qualifers included four home-based players, whereas Baxter only called up Tampere United's Antti Pohja from Veikkausliiga.

Finland's football clubs just cannot pay the same salaries as Allsvenskan sides, and the option to play at their home club means a loss of income and prestige that is just too big for Finns to consider until their mid to late thirties.

The root cause of this problem is the lack of a distinctive footballing identity among Finnish clubs, players and coaches. He argues that Finland needs a style, an ethos in order for everyone to know their jobs more thoroughly and to have confidence in the tactical plan he lays out. On the evidence of the Germany game, it seems as though Finland will play an up-tempo, aggressive style of football that is good enough to trouble the world's best teams.

Baxter has said that he wants his Finland to have two or three younger leaders to replace Litmanen. If Eremenko (20 years old) and Väyrynen (26) continue to play as well as they did against Germany, Finland may well have found them, and journalists might not need the glass ankled statue to write about.

Michael Bradley has moved from the Dutch league outfit Heerenveen to the German league, joining Borussia Monchengladbach.  As I read the story today I felt a sense of relief in seeing that one of the US's recent staple players has taken a step up in quality of team.  I recognize that Bradley has had several lack-luster performances for the Nats, especially as of late, but I think the guy has the tools and has shown the talent to grow into a dependable performer at the national level. I'm not completely sold on him yet, but I still roll my eyes at those who rant about him only being on the team because he's Bob's son.

After reading the story I continued onto the comments section to see what people had to say about the move.  The ESPN comments section of any story is always either an alarming collection of vitrol or pleasent source of insight.  There's usually very little in-between.  I was reading the usual assortment of anti-'any current USMNT player' comments which were coming through with an especially deep vein of anger this time when I came across the comment above.  It was like a slap in the face.  It hit me especially hard because I have been a vocal opponant of a certain forward who has continued to be included on the roster despite an ever-growing list of ineffectual and half-assed seeming performances.  I felt ashamed...

for all of about two minutes.

What came next was a mixture of logic and flabergast-ation (I know it's not a word, but roll with me on this one).  Some of the same crowd who were bashing Bradley for being ineffective have been completely indignant when any ESPN writer dares to question Eddie Johnson's continued call-ups.  They claim he is still young and has so much potential.  What I realized was that my lack of enthusiasm at Johnson wearing the Red, White, and Blue has more to do with soccer and less to do with cheering for his failures.  I would LOVE for him to go on a hot streak and prove me wrong.  That would mean he was playing well and the Nats would be winning games.  I'm still willing to root for Bradley to succeed on the pitch because he's young (21 to Johnson's 24) and he's shown some ability to be successful at the club level.  I know the Dutch league is no Fulham or Cardiff (note the sarcasm), but he's been more effective than Johnson.  How someone can be critical of Bradley and yet believe that Eddie Johnson deserves to be continued to be called up I do not know.

The time has come to truly question Bob Bradley's ability to guide us through the tough games required to perform well in a world cup, especially given his timidity and conservatism in roster selection against the minnow opponents that are CONCACAF, but Johnson's continued selection over players such as Kenny Cooper is a major reason why.

In something none of us expected, Heerenveen have accepted an offer for Michael Bradley from Borussia Mönchengladbach of the Bundesliga.  The club might sound familiar to you and that is because Kasey Keller once plied his trade for this German side from 2005 to 2007.  Gladbach are back in the Bundesliga 1 this year after spending last season in the 2nd division.  They are a large club with some good history, but have been floating around mid-table the last 8 or so years.

Not many American news outlets have picked this up yet, so I'm left to quote the Heerenveen official website which translates loosely to:

Sc Heerenveen and Borussia Mönchengladbach have already reached agreement on the transfer. Bradley must still make ends meet personally with the Germans.

So Bradley still has to agree to personal terms with the Bundesliga side.  Apparently Mikey traveled quickly to the German club after Heerenveen's game today.  This transfer sounds all but done, and it does make me a little sad because it would've been great to watch Bradley on TV for Middlesbrough every weekend.  My dissapointment aside, I think the Bundesliga is a good fit for Bradley.  Surely, it's not as fierce as the BPL, but Germany is full of high quality football and if Bradley can get in the squad regularly (like we all expect) he will continue his development nicely.

UPDATE: Borussia's site is now confirming this, saying (thanks to google translator):

Borussia faces the commitment by Michael Bradley. The 21-year-old U.S. national player from SC Heerenveen to be tomorrow (Monday) the medical check in Moenchengladbach abroad.

"He is a versatile midfield player usable, for his age quite a lot of experience with it. We hope that everything works and we will make perfect thing tomorrow," said sports director Christian Ziege.

DOUBLE UPDATE: Ives is reporting that Michael Bradley agreed to personal terms with Monchengladbach this morning. Deal done.

I våras var jag dessutom på Stockholms Stadion och såg matchen mellan Djurgården och Malmö FF och efter matchen var jag nere under läktarna för att intervjua spelare och gå på presskonferensen. In i spelargången kom då även Jesper Blomqivst, troligen där för att se de två före detta Enköpingsspelarna som gått till Djurgården. Fortfarande, såhär tio år senare, var det en märklig och mäktig känsla att helt plötsligt befinna sig i samma rum som en barndomsidol, det är i lägen som det som man funderar på hur vuxen man egentligen är. Weet waar je een jaar geleden stond, Kenny van Maerxum; niemand in België wist of Steppe je voor-, achter- of bijnaam was.  Voetjes op de grond en het ga je goed.

Wij hebben het al vele keren moeten hebben van ons doorzettingsvermogen, de steun van de supporters, de mentaliteit van de groep. De voorbije jaren werd dit aangevuld met een paar outstanding talentjes die het al snel voor bekeken hielden, maar goed... De club heeft dus dikwijls moeten teren op het kloppende hart dat gevoed wordt door de supporters, want dat geeft net die gasten op de pelouse de kracht om door te gaan. Dit jaar is er echter een keerpunt; dat échte kielse "fuck 'em-al-&-we-leggen-onze-kop-ervoor-gevoel" ís er gewoon niet. En dat zullen ze voelen, mark my words.

tick tock tick tock.... Middlesbrough continues to make news regarding Gareth Southgates renewed interest in Michael Bradley.  The Daily Mail has now picked up the story of Borough pursuing the young American, saying that they were priced out of a move for Reading's James Harper.  But by my estimation, Michael Bradley is worth a good deal more than Harper, so that seems odd if Southgate is looking for a cheap middie.  Plus we already know that Heerenveen isn't going to take any penny pinching offers.

UPDATE: Also, for what it's worth, Everton boss David Moyes was quoted  as saying

"I don’t need to buy mid-Premier League players – I need top players.  We've got these injuries and I want to sign six or seven players before next week.”

So on one hand he still wants to sign a handful of players (Bradley maybe?), but on the other, he's looking for "top players."  Unfortunately, though I hate to say it, Michael Bradley isn't going to come into the Premiership and be a top player.  Surely he has potential to be, but this admission from Moyes implies to me that Everton may be out of the Bradley chase (but hey, it's all speculation).

My Thoughts: Bradley is Middlesbrough's for the taking, they just need to bring a serious offer to the table.  There just isn't enough time left in the transfer window to play a intricate negotiating dance.  As critical as I am of Bradleys USMNT performances, I do think he has talent and tremendous work rate and I think he could fit nicely into the Borough squad (As long as someone else is doing the playmaking).

Looks like some teams are skulking in the shadows as they appraise Michael Bradley before the end of August.  Hamburg's scouting director was apparently in attendance for the US match versus Guatemala last Wednesday (must've really wanted to see Bradley badly if he trekked to Guat).  He did confirm that he was there to watch Bradley, but he would not say whether a bid was in the cards.

This also comes to light as the Sun recently reported that Gareth Southgate is once again considering Bradley as a replacement for George Boateng.  This comes after Southgate has recently failed in signing Reading's James Harper.

My Thoughts: Bradley to the Bundesliga isn't a horrible move. It is an upward step, albeit not as elevated as a move to Everton or even Middlesborough.  Hamburg finished 4th in the Bundesliga last season and have been in the top 10 the last 6 seasons; their club does have some pedigree.  The match quality is good in Germany and it would be a good stepping stone for Michael, but you have to imagine that he has his eyes set on a move to England.  Whether or not that can happen in the next few days, remains to be seen.

Everyone's favorite 20 year old yellow card magnet is in the news.  Heerenveen coach Yme Kuiper made some papers yesterday when discussing Michael Bradley:

"Bradley is allowed to leave us, but only for a realistic transfer fee. If that does not come along, it is better that he stays with us. Bradley is a good football player who can certainly be of value to us."

Let's break it down: After finishing the last Eredivisie season strongly, Bradley hasn't done himself any favors this summer.  Mediocre performances at the Olympics and some forgettable friendlies haven't helped to draw any attention from top clubs.  Last we all heard, Everton and Middlesborough had some interest in the youngster, but Heerenveen's 20-30 million USD estimation of the player now seems laughable.

But what choices do Heerenveen have? Last I checked, Bradleys contract expired at the end of this upcoming season. So, it seems most likely that Bradley will make a move in the January transfer window and use this fall term to reestablish his value. If he can even do that.  I'm skeptic that Bradley will continue to find the back of the net in the Dutch league, but we shall see.

But who knows, maybe Monaco will make a big bid in the next few days and he'll join Freddy in Ligue 1. Remember that rumor? psh.

Zonder al te veel hun best te doen stonden ze met rust al 2-0 voor. Toen 10 minuten na rust Bandjar in eigen doel mikte was de strijd helemaal gelopen en hij het 'sukkeltje' voor de rest van de middag. Heerenveen verzuimde zelfs nog om er dubbele cijfers van te maken.
Excelsior die zowiezo dus al weinig had in te brengen was er na de 4-0 en 5-0 helemaal mee aan. Ze wisten niet waar ze moesten lopen en als ze de bal kregen zag je 3 uur van te voren al aankomen dat ze hem binnen 3 seconden weer gingen kwijt raken.
Door het verlies zijn ze nu dan ook officieel gedegradeerd naar de Jupiler League en Heerenveen heeft door de winst de 5e plaats vast gesteld en zich daarmee gekwalificeerd voor de play offs waar ze gaan strijden om de voorondes van de champions league.
Niet dat ze daar wat hebben te zoeken als je het mij vraagt. Tuurlijk, ze spelen leuk en aardig voetbal gericht op de aanval. Maar ze worden 5e van Nederland, wat betkend dat ze het op de lange termijn hebben moeten afleggen tegen met name PSV.
PSV die won met 0-1 van Vitesse. Beetje bekrompen gespeeld. 4 goals minder gescoord dan Heerenveen en Ajax deden, maar wel net als hen 3 punten. En belangrijker nog. Het kampioenschap.

Om te overleven op Europees top niveau, moet je berekenend spelen. Zo ligt het er nu eenmaal heen. Meer verdedigen dan aanvallen. Buffelen, Slidings, Overtredingen lange ballen en spelhervattingen, dat is waar het in het in het hedendaagse voetbal voornamelijk om draait.
Tuurlijk, een aantal bal goochelaars in je team is nooit verkeerd. Maar wanneer je er te veel hebt, gaat het fout.
Neem nou Liverpool vs Arsenal, kwartfinales Champions League 2008. Als we Senderos buiten beschouwing laten dan kunnen we stellen dat individueel alle basis spelers van Arsenal technisch beter zijn dan die van Liverpool. Dat wil zeggen beter op het gebied van bal aanname, bal tempo, inpassing: 'one touch football'.
Beter. Dat is eigenlijk een breed begrip.
Soms hoor je dan mensen na afloop van een wedstrijd zeggen. 'We waren beter', terwijl ze net met 2-1 hebben verloren. Ze kijken dan naar het aantal keren achter elkaar overspelen, doelpogingen en balbezit denk ik. Volgens mij vergeten ze dan toch echt waar het om gaat en dat is natuurlijk; doelpunten. Als je het mij vraagt dan is de winnaar altijd de beste en dus beter.

Na het eindsignaal moesten wij nog even blijven zitten, want er volgden nog enkele huldigingen en toestanden. Mogen ze van mij in de kleedkamer houden, maar goed, je klapt toch even sportief mee. Niet zo fanatiek als die gozer die naast me zat de hele wedstrijd trouwens. Elke keer als met name Sibon een bal aanraakte of zelfs alleen maar lichtelijk toucheerde dan was het stadion te klein. Klappen, springen, juichen.
Ik heb het hem niet gevraagd maar ik kan met vrij veel zekerheid stellen dat hij een echte 'fean fan' en verliefd op Gerald Sibon is.

Uiteindelijk hadden J en ik dan fun plaza berijkt, een ruimte onder het stadion die bomvol met mensen is na een wedstrijd. H en S zaten tijdens de wedstrijd een eindje verderop in het stadion en we hadden afgesproken elkaar hier weer te ontmoeten. Dat viel nog niet mee. Uiteindelijk toch gevonden, lang leve mobile telefonie. Sms'en dan, want verstaan kon je elkaar niet.
Vervolgens even onze muntjes opgemaakt aan de bar en toen vertrokken. Even Heerenveen in. Eten bij 'baba'. Standaard bij een bezoek aan Heerenveen zit altijd inbegrepen: een heenreis, een terugreis en eten bij baba.
Baba is een Turks restaurant met dus een Turkse keuken. De bedoeling was dat ik nu een overall beoordeling zou gaan geven, maar ik bedenk mij nu dat ik ik eingelijk nog nooit wat anders heb gehad dan een Tosti Kaas en een broodje döner kebab zonder groenten. Nou, deze smaken in ieder geval fantastisch en vooral die laatste is een echte aanrader.

Daarna besloten we om nog even een kroegje te doen. Eerst moest er echter gepint worden door onder andere ondergetekende, want van het briefje van 20 wat aan het begin van de dag in mijn beurs zat was niet veel meer over.
Helaas, de belastindienst scheen een dag later met de betalingen over de brug te komen en zo kwam het dat er geen geld kon worden gepint. Bus net weg, dus naar huis is ook geen optie. Toch maar even mee de kroeg in.
Naast een briefje van 5 zat er nog een euro munt en één van 50 cent in mijn zak. Samen met zo'n 3 euro van J gooiden we dat in de gokkast.
J speelt. Niet zomaar. J schijnt bij zijn geboorte met een aantal overdosissen geluk te zijn gezegend. Mocht mijn leven ooit aan een zijden draadje komen te hangen, dan wil ik dat hij hem vast houd.
En je raad het al. Bingo. 40 euro komt er uit rollen en we zitten gebakken voor de avond. Nou ja voor 2 uurtjes nog maar, want onze laatste bus vertrekt om kwart over 8.

Ahtans, dit was de bedoeling. Na op de heenreis al uit een busje te zijn gezet omdat er opeens 'out of the blue' te veel mensen in zaten. J kreeg zijn euro terug en moest uitstappen. S en ik hadden toen weinig keuze en zijn ook uit gestapt. Ondertussen H bellen want die stond verderop maar te wachten en te wachten.
Uitgelegd dat hij in geen enkele bus moest stappen die voor bij kwam en dat we met J zijn vader mee reden.

We hoopten en gingen er van uit dat de terugreis voorspoediger zou verlopen. Viel tegen.
We staan ruim op tijd te wachten op onze bus die ons thuis zal gaan brengen denken wij. Maar wat zie je dan om 20 over 8 door de bocht komen.
Zo'n klein wit gevaarte waar nog minder mensen in kunnen als in een bushokje passen. Dan hoop je nog dat het niet lijntje 15 is maar je voelt het natuurlijk al aankomen.
Hij stopt voor onze neus. Wij schuiven de deur open en willen gaan instappen. "Er kunnen nog 3 mensen bij" roept de chauffeur. Lichtelijk onder invloed, wij nog even na tellen en samen met nog iemand die stond te wachten op de bus kwamen we op een totaal van 5. Past niet dus. Je snapt het niet maar altijd is het weer feest bij de Arriva op zondagen. Waarom zetten ze niet gewoon zo'n grote bus in. Er staan er genoeg op het station zie ik altijd.
Maar goed. Meneer kon instappen en wij moesten wachten. Aangezien het de laatste bus was van die dag was een volgende geen optie. De chauffeur heeft toen nog even een taxi voor ons gebeld en een half uur later heeft die ons dan ook perfect thuis gebracht.
Al met al toch wel een geslaagde dag. Die dus net iets geslaagder was geweest als de bussen wat mee hadden gewerkt.
