Buona indagine a tutti!

Elisabeth Vincentelli, determined dilletante and arts editor for Time Out New York, decided to cure a run of unusually pleasant weather in New York City by reading some noir Scandinavian fiction.

Thumbs up for Steig Larsson's Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and for Per Persson, whose To Siberia is a spare masterpiece. On the other hand, Henning Mankell's standalone The Depths scores high both in both bleakness and cliches. As for Kjell Eriksson's procedurals, The Demon from Dakar and The Cruel Stars of Night . . . in a word, m'eh.

I'm not sure how you say m'eh in French, but I'm amazed that Elisabeth, who is originally from France, has been able to restrain herself from reading the second in the Millennium trilogy, which has been out in French translation for some time as one of our French professors has told me, gloatingly.

Unser urbaner Tag fing in Lund an.

I just finish reading another 2 stories. I read these 2 stories from the select editions of Reader D

I just finish reading another 2 stories. I read these 2 stories from the select editions of Reader Digest.

The first one is 'The Codex' by Douglas Preston.

[caption id="attachment_220" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The Codex by Douglas Preston"][/caption]

This story is about the notorious treasure-hunter, Maxwell Broadbent has always tried to control the lives of his 3 sons. Now, he has set them a final challenge in a videotaped will. In order to claim their inheritance(a collection of priceless artefacts), they must find the hiding place. The quest sends the brothers into mortal danger in the Honduran jungle.

Since this story involved the adventurous trip of searching the treasure, it is quite interesting. I really can't stop reading it until i know the ending. So i finished this story in 2 days time.

I rate this book 7/10

Then the next one is The Return of The Dancing Master by Henning Mankell.

[caption id="attachment_221" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The Return of The Dancing Master by Henning Mankell"][/caption]

This story got nothing to do with dancing! It is about when a retired police officer is murdered at his remote house in northern Sweden, Stefan Lindman is driven to find out who would kill his old colleague in such a merciless fashion. As Lindman works alongside local police, he gradually uncovers a network of evil that emanates from a dark corner of Sweden's wartime history.

I managed to finish by this afternoon thanks to TNB for not supplying electricity for nearly 7 hours!!! No electricity for so long and no prior notice, how efficient it is.

I like this story as it progressed but i am not so fancy about the ending of the story. I find it some how ended to briefly because as i was expecting the climax to go more interesting, it came to the end of the story. However, overall it is worth reading. This story happened in Sweden so i find it a bit difficult to remember the name of the places. It is quite new to me as i really have no knowledge on Sweden. I guess this is the time for me to buck up on my geography.

I rate this book 7/10

Before i forget which i really did the last time, let me post a picture of the most important thing during my story time.

[caption id="attachment_223" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="My Bookmark"][/caption]

This is the bookmark that i used during these holidays. I got dozen of bookmarks but i just can't remember why i ended up using this. If i'm not mistaken, this is a gift from Li Lee(correct or not ar)??? I also can't really remember(i'm getting old). But, i miss my twin tower bookmark!!! I just can't find it!!!

I was about to say no, when I recalled preferring some of the adult Harry Potter covers. I’d n

I was about to say no, when I recalled preferring some of the adult Harry Potter covers. I'd never be ashamed to read HP on the train, but it's nicer with a cover you like to look at, rather than one you don't. If there's a choice.

Meg Rosoff's What I Was is just out in the adult paperback version. So that's first a hardback, then a young paperback, and now, two months later, an old people's paperback. And very nice it is, too. I think I prefer it, but won't change the one I have.

And that's without getting involved with American covers, other English language covers, and the translations. As a writer you could experience difficulties recognising your own book. Rather like poor Henning Mankell, who refused all claims to his book a few years ago.

Henning Mankell, Faceless Killers (Vintage Crime, 2003).
Kurt Wallender is a detective in the Swedish province of Scania, in the very southern end of the country. Called upon to investigate the brutal murder of an elderly couple on a rural farm, a murder without an apparent motive, Wallender finds himself confronting Swedish anxiety about immigration. Mankell does not hurry things, leaving plenty of time to absorb Wallender's surroundings. Originally published in Sweden in 1997, and the first of several novels featuring Wallender.

Here is the bio at Mankell's website. Here's a bio from Meekalee. Nicci Gerrard (The Observer) interviews Mankell. Ian Thomson (The Guardian) profiles him. Angel L. Soto calls it a pleasure to read. Sue Magee was hooked right from the beginning. Orin Judd gives it a B+. Terry gives it a B-. According to martin, Mankell hadn't hit his stride yet. Leila Roy begs to differ. dovegreyreader's first encounter with Wallender went well. But Becky didn't like it. Anders Hanson read it because it's set in Sweden. Julius Lester wonders how to live in the new. Jonathan Bart was reminded of several other authors.
The comparison with Inspector Morse is valid to some extent. Kurt Wallander is a moody old-fashioned detective who likes his drink and his opera. But that is about as far as it goes really. The relief to me is that unlike Colin Dexter, Henning Mankell's style of writing is a little less academic, which is what I want for my light reading. The story though did have the same sort of twists and turns and hidden family secrets, but whilst I enjoyed it and will no doubt read many more of his books, the ending came all too suddenly and the killers turned out to be what had been assumed most of the way through.

Cała amerykańska śmietanka thrillerowo-kryminalna (wszystkie te Cobeny, Cusslery, Follsomy etc.) powinna przyjechać do Szwecji i błagać na kolanach, żeby Mankell pozwolił im sprzątać, przynosić ręczniki, podawać drinki, robić zakupy - służyć.

On taki jest, on nie udaje. Momentami duszny, ciężki i przygnębiający.

Thrillers have been a recent rediscovery of mine. I have just finished reading through the Kurt Wall

Thrillers have been a recent rediscovery of mine. I have just finished reading through the Kurt Wallander novels of Henning Mankell and now I find myself searching for further books to add to my reading list. The current issue of The Economist provides an itinerary through China for this purpose, especially:

“The Eye of Jade”, which came out in Britain in 2007 and in America earlier this year, features Mei Wang, the first female private eye in Beijing. She drinks Oolong tea rather than whisky, and has a diligent male assistant. Like the best fictional private eyes, Mei Wang operates on the margins of legality. Her hunt for a stolen jade seal that disappeared during the chaos of the Cultural Revolution takes the reader through smoky mah-jong parlours and the lavish apartments of the new rich.

Beijing is described in taut, limpid, prose. So is Mei Wang's longing for the father who vanished in the Chinese gulag. But knowledge can be a burden too, as Mei Wang discovers when she unearth the terrible choice her mother was forced to make during the Cultural Revolution. “The Eye of Jade” is a moving and promising debut. China is rising, and so is the quality and quantity of crime writing it inspires.

The second part to this series by Diane Wei Liang, The Paper Butterfly, was, as chance would have it, reviewed on Simon Mayo's Book Panel this week, where it was praised in particular for its vivid and poignant descriptions of personal fates and historical atrocities. It's interesting to note that Ms Wei Liang interweaves her personal narrative (see the link on her name) into what are essentially genre novels. I will be curious to find out whether - as was the case with Henning Mankell's Wallander novels - history and politics and the so-called grand ideas that many a literary novelist seeks to address are perhaps not more effectively dealt with in a gripping story of the kind you can read in a crime or science fiction novel.

Plukk opp nærmeste bok
Åpne den på side 123
Finn femte setning

Kurt Wallander tar saken.. Mycket bra ja!

Iallefall, her er setningene:

In 1914 Lars Tobiasson-Svartman, commissioned by the Swedish Navy, was on a secret mission to sound

In 1914 Lars Tobiasson-Svartman, commissioned by the Swedish Navy, was on a secret mission to sound the depths of the country's coastal waters. His goal was to find out if it were possible for ships with a bigger draught than the ones given on the present chart to pass this far into the archipelago, shielded by the surrounding skerries and rocks. Although he had to remain discreet about these navigation channels which were to accommodate military vessels, the surreptitious nature of his job was not the cause of his alienation from his wife, who often spent months on end at home in Stockholm longing for his return.

He was very much in love with his wife, whose scent he could smell whenever he thought of her. But there was a secret inside him of which he was not aware. He was a very solitary man. His love for solitude gave us an impression as if he hated everything else in life. From the start, from as far as he could remember, solitude had been like his own skin. He was a solitary person constantly seeking new distances to measure. But deep inside, his personal navigation channels were unfathomable, deep, and even dangerous. All his life Lars had been keeping things, and people, at a distance and it would not be hyperbole to say that he had been stripped of closeness, if closeness ever existed for him.

On one of his missions, he discovered something on a remote island and dangerous passion, suspicion, and inconceivable violence at once were awakened in him. Entangled in between his wife, the navy bureau, and his new-found self, Lars lived a double life that went downward spiral to very shocking consequences. Mankell's style---the careful release of details, and the grimness of his writing---matches the mood of the landscape to the subject. A man who set out to measure depths of the sea is also, without his knowing, on a fateful journey to his heart-chord with which he had been out of touch. The novel progresses with a dark style that literally measures the depths as the dark side of his personality grows.

I remember saying a while back that I already have a face for Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander, and so I didn't feel that Kenneth Branagh could really be Wallander to me. Maybe I can learn to accept change.

While on half term holiday I watched a more recent Wallander on television, and found that the man going round arguing with someone at the beginning of the film, was actually Wallander himself. New actor; new face. And I really didn't feel this was Wallander. Perhaps I could adapt, but there's only so many faces one man can have. To tell the truth, I didn't feel this actor played Wallander as I understand his personality to be.

I'll have to wait and see what Kenneth Branagh can do with him. Can Gilderoy Lockhart ever be a moody Swedish policeman?

Just as I expect Francesca Simon's guests on Thursday evening could manage to be both happy for her success and envious that their own sales aren't quite as good, it's interesting to observe authors and see and hear what they say, or don't say.

Some only talk about their own work, and don't even seem to be too modest to say how good they believe they are. Thankfully not many are like this. And there's Henning Mankell, who as I pointed out the other day, doesn't even recognise his own work when he sees it.

Many authors go out of their way to suggest other writers and books that they think I'd like. Sometimes they are wrong, but often they are quite right and I'm grateful for ideas. Linda Newbery has been known to send emails with suggestions.

Tim Bowler spent ages during a school talk some years ago "selling" Melvin Burgess' book Doing It. I think Tim almost forgot his own books while explaining quite how hilariously funny and worthwhile this controversial book of Melvin's is.

Adele Geras is also very helpful and recommends books she likes in her website newsletter. Meg Rosoff is forever pointing me in the direction of her friends' books. Do you people think I have unlimited time for reading?

Then we have Son's "party trick" of asking every author he meets what they think of Philip Pullman. He even has me do it for him if he's not there. Whether the authors he asks are always honest I don't know, but they tend to have good manners, so will usually say something positive. And I'd say that most of the time it sounds as if they mean it.

When Lionel Shriver got the Pullman question, her answer was of the more unusual variety. She said "Who?"
