No. Of course, ultimately it is possible - although in the short-term I find it highly unlikely. Not because Chrome is bad or because the others have a nice UI or anything like that, instead purely because of the fact that the other browsers such as IE and Firefox have been established longer meaning that people have the perception that they are better (which some times is or isn't the case!)

So what does Chrome do better than IE or Firefox? Features of course - small things like being able to drag a tab away from its original position to form a new window, and the ability to type in a word (or few letters) from the URL or title of a website you have previously visited and it showing up in the Address Bar History. Things that make life just that little bit easier.

Of course Chrome, given what it was built on, is relatively stable at the moment - although it is obviously still in Beta stages.

There something with IE being so integrated into windows I don't like. I plan on downloading Google's' browser called Chrome and think i might check it out also. Its not going to replace my Firefox but i wanna try it out. Download Chrome directly from Googles' front Page.

Also if you don't know Mozilla has alot of other good tools to use so check them out also.

So I took the plunge. I downloaded Google Chrome the other day, willing to give it a try. I've been a Firefox user pretty much since launch, so I was intrigued to see how Google's new browser would perform in comparison.

But, before I give my two cents, why do we all care about the 'browser wars'? An Internet browser is something that should just be 'there' and do it's job, invisible almost to the user. It's function is simply to load web pages. Like the menu on Sky TV is designed to browse the plethora of Sky channels, it performs its job, takes you to the channel, and users rarely question whether there could be a better way of doing it.

But the browser war has indeed captured our attention and headlines, and pitted the Mozilla Foundation against the behemoth that is Microsoft. It is a true David vs. Goliath story in the Internet age. And now Google has entered the ring, performing a double-clothesline maneuver with Firefox against Microsoft. Google has supported Firefox in the past, and indeed is continuing to do so, but has now, after much speculation, entered the browser war in their usual under-the-radar, low-key manner.

I've been using Chrome for a few days now, and I have to say, so far, so good. I was immediately impressed with the minimalist layout, but wouldn't expect any less from Google. But what struck me most was the speed - the tabs load noticeably quicker than either IE or Firefox. And they now run independently of the main browser, too, which means that if one of the pages on your tabs encounters a problem, the entire window doesn't shut down.

This happened to me for the first time earlier today. A website crashed, and a little window popped up to 'kill it', which closed the one offending tab, but left the others unaffected. This is a very welcome addition, and is something that the next iterations of Firefox and IE will have to include. On the downside, Chrome has crashed and shut down once, and I started noticing a bit of slowdown earlier today which was frustrating, but overall it seems to be working well, and I understand that it is still the Beta version so some minor problems are to be expected.

So I'm giving it a definite thumbs-up. It's quick, unintrusive, intuitive and simple. It's strips the browser down to the bare essentials, delivering a user-friendly interface which doesn't aim to please, but simply aims not to intefere with the browsing experience.

I’m currently running IE 8.0, Safari and Chrome. Definitely a mixed bag of pros and cons. I

I'm currently running IE 8.0, Safari and Chrome. Definitely a mixed bag of pros and cons. I'm still an Explorer fan, but Chrome has done a good job of taking the best of each, mixed with lots of the good stuff from Firefox, and shows you how nice browsing really could be. But Chrome feels far more like Alpha than Beta.

Safari is somehow... Pleasant to use. It's riddled with quirks that ought to be annoying. It takes a long time to fire up on a PC, and the big, gray, top space of the browser looks clunky and wasteful. Probably an artefact of Chrome/IE having that same space "smoked glass"ed.

I like the way IE does bookmarks, but I think I prefer the button bar concept in Safari. I find Safari's bookmark manager the least intuitive I've ever used, not that it's all that bad but instead of popping it into the window they replace your entire browser space with the bookmark manager and you have to select "Hide all bookmarks" from the menu or notice the little "book" icon is actually a visibility toggle. If you can wrap your head around this perversion of normal UI flow, you can probably get along with it fine.

Having just converted to using Safari's bookmark bar, I liked the presence of the same concept in Chrome; but then it one-upped Safari and put the pages I frequent into the "New Tab" display. IE8 does something sort of similar, their "New Tab" is no-longer the old "About New Tabs" page, but actually shows you things like tabs you recently closed, kinda neat. Safari, on the other hand, just shows you a blank page (I think you can configure it):

Yeah, don't try to read too much into my Chrome browsing habbits, I haven't used it that much. It has quirky problems with a bunch of popular sites.

The first couple of days I tried chrome, it seemed to have unpredictable performance. It crashed when I tried to go to Microsoft's site to see the Seinfeld teaser (note: I just told you that link crashed my browser, dumb dumb). However, I have definitely noticed that stuff which is JavaScript heavy is smoother and more stable, so sites like Facebook etc... I can best describe it as being like the difference between when you used to telnet into computers over a modem vs the first time you logged in to a server on a local network.

My more java-script intense tools at work feel nice and smooth: I pulled up the page that lets me review the chat logs (GM activity, HC activity, /reports, etc) and pulled down 6 months work of /reports in each browser:

IE takes about a 60 seconds downloading the data, about 10 seconds loading it, about 15 seconds sorting it and then about a second rendering the resulting page (which shows 30 reports per page and 442 pages). It takes 1-2 seconds to switch between pages and nearly 30 seconds if you click "All".

Safari takes about 53 seconds downloading the data, about 2 seconds loading it, about 11 seconds sorting it and then about a second rendering the resulting page. It takes about 1.5 seconds to switch between pages and around 12 seconds if you click "All".

Chrome takes about 51 seconds downloading the data, about a second loading it, about 8 seconds sorting it and the page seems to render instantaneously. It takes about 0.8 seconds to switch between pages and around 6 seconds if you click "All"

(Yes, you bet I've suggested to Ramp that he look at whether we could switch to the Google V8 javascript engine instead of the one we're using right now!)

I tend to like sites that have that old "google" look & feel. Google is my search engine, I use LinkedIn, Friends Reunited and Facebook. My own web designs try to borrow from that same tones-of-blue-and-gray.

Because google is based on WebKit, like Safari they both share a cool pro and a bad con: The pro, resizable text areas allowing you to resize any multi-line input box on any page anywhere; the con, no default XML renderer so accessing an XML page just shows either a blank or bits of text. Both IE and Firefox have a default XML viewer that validates and then shows you the XML nicely marked up.

The first few days I was using Chrome, there were definitely some periods of sketchy performance that had me worried it was uploading or downloading a ton of stuff, but watching my modem lights quickly showed that to be untrue.

I do think Google are onto something with the way they are making every window/tab in Chrome a separate process. I've had a lot less multi-tasking issues with Chrome. It doesn't bring a whole lot of new ideas to the table, but it does a nice job of bring a lot of other folks' ideas together and polishing them well. There are some privacy concerns with the combined search/address bar and the fact it is continuously sending data up to Google.

I hope other browsers will take pages out of the Chrome leaf, but Chrome isn't going to become my preferred browser any time. I particularly hope it might shake up the Firefox team to quit being so Andreesen and focus more on function than form: they need to pander to the end user and the average web dev, not the detached and clinical pursuit of web standards to the letter. It surely is a pain supporting the mix of this and that across browsers, but that's how the web evolves - eventually some technique or practice becomes formalized and we move on. I see Firefox as a threat to that process, and supporting Firefox is always more work than as-yet-non-standard solution working elsewhere.

IE8 hasn't grabbed me in any particular way. It feels slower, it's clearly bloatier and although they've polished some IE7 adds, the IE8 adds feel more tacked on than IE7s Firefox/Opera/Safari clones.

So, despite my attachment to IE, here I am writing this article in Safari ;)

Microsoft üzgün: Internet Explorer Ağustos ayını önemli bir kayıpla kapattı. Rakamlar burada...

Google Chrome dünya tarayıcı pazarının yüzde 1,41'lik kısmına sahip olmak için sadece üç güne ihtiyaç duydu. Böylece Chrome rakipleri Opera ve Netscape'i geçmiş oluyor.

Years ago, it was OK to use IE to surf the internet. No one called you a stupid idiot. No one called you a lame n00b. No one told you to **** Bill Gates' ****.

Not anymore. Unless you want yourself to be compared to Bill Gates' personal... er... serviceman, try to use something besides IE.

If you use IE, the message you're sending out is basically this:

Yeah, it is that big of a medal. And it hangs on your face.

Using IE means that you silently accepted the browser that Microsoft forced you to use by packaging it with Windows. It means that you are a tool. It means that you are a powerless tile in the road Bill Gates follows as he laughs his way to the bank.

Then again, if you stop using Internet Explorer after reading this article, you are sending me a message as well:

If you start using Mozilla Firefox or Opera simply because I told you to, you are a total tool. You simply accept whatever the majority says as gospel truth. If its that easy to make you change your preferences, I want you on my jury when I get arrested.

So what are you gonna do, kid?

As a matter of fact, there are some basic guidelines to follow while choosing a browser. If you are still confused, click here...

It is a tool that Google wish to use in order to capture the Browser market. However, for one main reason that may not be necessarily possible.

For instance, those Internet users who have Window Operating system, it is more likely that the Internet Explorers are already available for usage. The question in this case for an average Joe is why would I want to trouble myself to install another application, if the current application can do the job pretty well? Similarly, for those with Machintos OS, the Safari Browser is also installed. To me, no one want another application if the current one is perfectly usable.

Personally, the reason of Chrome is just to keep the investors happy. Since the investors are more concerned about the bottom line - their investment, Google needs to keep on innovating and raising the share price. In other word, Chrome is just a gimmick for investor.

I like this browser than mozilla's Firefox. Why?, Because it is much more cleaner than firefox. And one of the things I like in this browser is the incognito because the pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however. Anyway Here's a screenie of Google Chrome:

Its not dangerous, but like pollen grains might be a cause for irritation when it blows in through the open window. Who knows, like the mold spores it might cover your valuables in layers of velvety sneeze inducing hazard. Softwares, and their creators, have taken it upon themselves to embellish their products with as many features as possible. I was looking for the simplest theme for this blog and most of the themes in the kitty had way too much information. I think I chose the most unobstrusive one. I just want it to be unobstrusive, even if it is information rich, and not overflowing with features promising you endless information.

I was checking out Google chrome. I must say that its darn good and does what a browser is pretty much expected to do, render a page. It doesn't burden itself with a gazellion toolbars. Its lean and meets my expectations of speed. I think its the first time that some software launch was accompanied by a comic book to explain the need for the introduction of a new product. Its a beta version, and like one of my friends pointed out, still not ready according to Google. Well some of the google products have been beta for five years now, Chrome is just starting out. I do have a complain with Chrome ( I am sure others have faced it too ). For some reason the scrolling up does not work. Scrolling is very quick, but once you have scrolled all the way down, there is no way to scroll up using the mouse scroll wheel. The arrow keys work fine though. Like the firefox stealth mode, it has the incognito mode with the fedora and dark glass wearing spy. People refer to it as 'porn mode' and is quite useful for selectively storing history. The tab browsing and the animation displaying the sliding of the tabs over one another is cool. However, it has nothing to pull down a list of not in view tabs, so once the number of tabs go on increasing the tab label on the top goes smaller and smaller, untill they are just one character wide or even without any descriptive characters.

The overall user experience feels very good and is very unobstrusive. Its quite the browser one would expect from Google. Since I use the wikipedia a lot, the usage of the address bar directly as a search box for the site is quite a nifty feature. The bookmark management is somewhat limited, but I dont obsessively manage bookmarks, so serves me fine. As someone from google mentioned, they would consider it a success even if it forces Microsoft IE 9 to become half as good !

Mozilla Firefox

Fellow Snagsta co-founder and developer extraordinaire Paul Stancer has been staying with me this week. I don’t get to see him much as I live in central London whereas Paul lives in a remote cave in one of Hong Kong’s outlying islands.

At about 7.30 the other morning I stumbled in to him at the breakfast table and saw he was having a play around with Google’s new browser Chrome. We wanted to see if the private beta version of Snagsta worked on it and we were glad to see it did (we would have been pretty shafted if it didn’t).

Later that day I read a review about it from Nick Carr on RoughType via Nic Brisbourne’s Equity Kicker blog.

I’ve just had a test drive and have also read up on some more of its features. Here are a list of eight things I like about it and why it could be better than the latest versions of both IE and Firefox:

1. More stability

Google implies that Chrome is more stable than existing browsers. A major selling point for me. As their little Google's comic book puts it, “When you’re writing an important email or editing a document a browser crash is a big deal”.

2. More speed

Google claim that sites will download quicker on Chrome; this appears to have something to do with Chrome’s JavaScript Virtual Machine named V8. Google state that Chrome looks at the JavaScript source code and “generates machine code that can run directly on the CPU that’s running the browser”, this apparently helps speed things up.

Brendan Eich (the founder of Mozilla CTO and JavaScript creator) claims a new Firefox's new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine outperforms V8 so this particular claim is hard to verify.

3. More secure

I like how they have built Chrome using a sandboxing technique that prevents unwanted software installing itself on your machine and stops what happens on one tab affecting what happens on another.

4. More open

Google have decided to open source the entire browser. This could be of huge benefit to the web community. Yes, I know Google has more money than God so they can afford to do this but they deserve a pat on the back for doing this.

5. More style

Google definitely lacks Apple’s style but what they’ve build here looks really slick. I’m a big fan of the smooth and uncluttered look and feel.

6. A dynamic start page

Chrome have done away with the traditional start page approach used by other browsers to display your 9 most visited pages when you boot it up.

7. More Privacy

Google have included an “Incognito window” in this build. None of your history is saved in the browser when you use this window and when you close it the cookies from that session are wiped out.

8. Better approach to blocking pop ups

Pop ups are confined to stay in the tab they came from unless you want to drag them out in to a new tab. I just tested this out on one of my favourite music sites and it works like a treat.

Nice job Sergey and Larry.

The launch of Google Chrome has a added a new twist to the Browser wars. Microsoft keen to expand it

The launch of Google Chrome has a added a new twist to the Browser wars. Microsoft keen to expand its browser market share must be surprised by the sudden launch of Google Chrome. It has already taken 1% market share as per the initial reports. Google must have relased it with the Google toolbar as default. When i tried installing Toolbar, I couldnt do it. Google is known for sudden release of new products. Chrome is based on the Open source webkit. Whether it will give a serious competition to IE is to be seen. There are some new features in it like debug java, javascript console & the ubiquitous simple google interface. Google has also added it to Google analytics so it can be tracked. There was lot of noise over the Chrome's EULA & google later corrected it. Mozilla firefox is using the Google toolbar & Chrome might also dent the market share of mozilla. Chrome has got good initial PR response & thus Google has set the ball rolling for a new browser war.. Google release of Chrome shows how companies can suddenly face a competitor.

The much talked about browser by Google has finally been released on 2nd of September. It’s been named Chrome. Like most top browsers it is free to download. So I went ahead and downloaded it.

I am very archaic in the sense that despite being dubbed as “Slow” I am a huge fan of Internet Explorer. However, when the browsing gets tedious and as slow as mule I switch to alternate browser. Since beginning, that is when I started using net about ten years ago, I used to download Netscape browser as well. It was (still is) fast. Years later Firefox was introduced that took the market by storm; I think more than half of America uses it. I have tested Firefox as well. It’s fast no doubt and has beaten Netscape in fast browsing.

“Fastness” is what a user looks for. Chrome has been publicized as fast, easy yet sophisticated to use. After hearing it from a friend and reading about it on the Google website I thought to give it a try. It is very simple to use – has interesting features more or less the same what Netscape, IE and Firefox offers but I like it for its fresh and neat look.

Some people have experienced problems with Chrome. I browsed for an hour and to me it looked absolutely fine and fast. It’s a BETA release which means it has a long way to go but still it seems very useful, workable and quick. I didn’t like one thing though that it saves a complete browsing history… something I don’t prefer. You can delete it but it feels cumbersome.

So now I have five browsers; IE, Netscape, Firefox, Opera and Chrome. Opera is quick too but it can’t display some websites properly. From now on it is either IE or Chrome for me.

Closures particularly are one of its most awesomely powerful features. Once properly understood they tend to roll off the keyboard almost by accident. It makes you wonder how you ever wrote software which doesn't have them.

Much like my comments about C# thread syntax being easy to use and abuse without realising it, closures are easy to create, but have potentially harmful consequences for the unwary, particularly in IE. To avoid accidentally stepping on a closer landmine it is necessary to understand their mechanism. This depends largely on the role of scope chains in identifier resolution and so on the resolution of property names on objects.

Laurens van den Oever's solutionto stop you wetting yourself when programming for IE is a good one. Incidentally, I needed a good XML to JSON converter and fairly randomly chose Thomas Frank's to get me going. I intended to revisit this a write my own, but it's been so good I shan't bother - it's been flawless.

It's a bold statement, so I leave it to you to determine. Is Google's Chrome the best browser out there? It's certainly fast and incorporates many popular features (Tabbed browsing, Private Browsing, or 'Porn Mode' as others refer to it). But is it best? I don't feel so yet, but that's because its not multi-platform. As a Mac user, I'm left in the dark. However, it should becoming soon for us Mac users and for the Linux users out there as well.

Want to download it? Here is the link [Google Chrome]
