Remember Matt?

Of course noting to myself this morning that I hadn't been up on my reading has caused no small part of my morning to be derailed by, you guessed it, reading. Some of the best:

San Francisco: No One Will Tell You When You Have a Bad Idea. [via]

Defacing Refacing Government Tender (What you are doing is illegal!) [via]

Dear Shaun: "Your $x (whatever your reason for it) is not some fragile vase that is going to shatter the second you $y. It is as strong as you decide it is, and the boundaries are where you set them." A note on keepin' on keepin' on. Bluish Orange was amongst the first blogs I ever read, and some of the best personal writing I've ever come across online.

Be kind, for everyone you know is fighting a hard battle. If only this were as easy to practice as it was to capture on a PostSecret.

Elixir's Cocktail Club: 80% or more of my alcoholic beverages these days are beers, and of the remaining 20% probably 9 of 10 are wine. I also fear Elixir because of the absinthe blackout I had last time I was there. But, here are good learning opportunities to become master of a domain, if that's your bag. [via]

Finding Affordable Insurance When You're Own Your Own: Again, this is something that could have been brought to my attention yesterday.

The London Bridge on Twitter. Also: The SF Giants, Oakland A's, LA Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks, providing pregame, postgame, and in-game updates. See? Twitter can be used for almost anything, so stop freaking out about "what it does."

iPhone hack: Scan your membership cards, import the pictures into your phone, barcode images are scannable (at least in test run). Unfortunately, the only membership card I really use at present is Safeway, and I have a seven year old phone number for that, rather than a card. Also, apparently iPhone users get free access at AT&T hotspots.

Finally, even if it's just for entering a contest, I was mentioned on Anil's blog in a roundup of Ctrl-V, and that makes me happy. I know where that game started. [tag: internet famous]

It occurs to me that some people put a lot of effort into leaving comments on blogs, posts in forums

It occurs to me that some people put a lot of effort into leaving comments on blogs, posts in forums and even idle chatter in IRC (if you have enough windows open). It seems to me that this is low profile effort. If instead, someone took that time and effort and did his or her own blog or podcast, the result would reach more people. I have nothing against comments, posts or chats. I do all three. However, it's not my primary internet thing. I get a lot more return for the blogging and podcasting that I do from being someone else's minion. Yet, perhaps there is room to be both a minion in one instance and a star in another.

Some new business models are entirely dependent on getting people to comment/post/chat. In other words, the goal is to get advertising to pay for access to these folks. Perhaps some people don't realize that? Also, if your goal is to reach out to the internet famous person at the top of the particular new media stack, sitting in the IRC for the show might not be the best way. Certainly, it's not if you want to actually have a conversation.

This is something I'm thinking a lot about as I expand my own internet hobby ventures. For me, it is solely about the fun.

Two links pushed to me via Twitter are forming enough rumination to generate a post. This original

Two links pushed to me via Twitter are forming enough rumination to generate a post. This original video is blog worthy in and of it self and this blogger has seized upon it. It is biting but true enough to be funny. I must be a new media DB then. Except that I have a day job. I think that there are some new media people who are big who do it all for fun and have independent means (or are on the dole).

My peer group of new media folks are the ones who are doing other things for a living. Someone in this camp (who is far more successful in new media than I) is Scott Johnson. His Extra Life Radio Show is very, very popular and he has a web comic and other podcasts as well. He also has a full time regular job. He must be a very energetic guy to sustain this kind of output. I'm sure he would like to quit his day job, but the thing is that old school jobs pay a heck of lot better. That's certainly true for me. I don't even do advertising on my podcasts. I'm not going to be quiting my day job anytime soon.

The other link that makes me write is an article from The Los Angeles Times re: SXSW. Here we see new media doing self-cannibalizing at it's finest with someone vlogging themselves while interviewing a blogger. If you want to take the analogy to its furthest, new media regenerates as it self-consumes. It feeds on itself but miraculously continues to grow in the process. If it is a Hydra, it bites off one of its own heads and two more sprout. Everyone is making content about each other which in turn generates new content.

How long can it continue? It will peak in growth like everything else. But new media itself is permanent. There will always be a segment of the population that like to write words and make videos. The gateway to entry has been forever smashed with Wordpress and YouTube. There will always be someone to consume this. As a consequence, I think one thing that has died is the old media superstar. New media pulls market share and eyeballs away from old media even though it doesn't pay the talent very well. Just like in the music industry, where there will never be another Rolling Stones, so will go the rest of old media. You won't have enough money in old media to create an old school superstar any longer. Although, on the flip side, every element of human interest gets its own micro-celebrity. In certain instances, that micro-celebrity becomes big enough to be a micro-celebrity superstar, like Veronica Belmont, for example.

If the loss of superstars paves the road for participation in media by the masses, I think we're all better off. Certainly, with our cameras and microphones and lighting kits, we are having more fun.

Maybe you thought you were going to Parsons design school to take pictures like Annie Leibovitz or make paintings like Jackson Pollock or whatever, but the joke is on you, hipster, because when you get there and settle in to your first class all of a sudden everyone will be talking about making internet sex tapes or maybe their fake 90-day suicide plan or titillating their way to cable news punditry, and it will be all be part of the curriculum. In a crumbling America that can't actually make anything except narcissistic "reality" entertainment, Parsons has taken the ingenious step of launching a class where grades are determined by internet fame. Professor Jamie Wilkinson even created proprietary software to track attention by monitoring not just traffic but also Twitter and blog posts, response videos and friend requests. I think I'd at least get a B in this class.

Speedy post commences here:

Sitting outside room 18 at the Austin convention center. One real session down, many to go. Lots of people here. Main observation so far is that "internet famous" is a heavily used word, and until today I hadn't really considered it meant anything outside of the tongue-in-cheek "not actually famous at all." It does though, and it seems SXSW is all about internet fame. There's a presupposition in the air that if you're here, you're in hot pursuit of internet fame. It's an axiom that appears to drive the postures of the entire flock.

There are more bloggers here than on the internet.

Takeaway #1:
Despite exhortations to the contrary, I've yet to be swayed from my conviction to seek excellence over recognition. Rubbing elbows is fun, and may indeed launch many great adventures. If those elbows rubbed yield likeminded friends, I'll toast to that.

Chasing fame is for American Idol contestants though.

I went to a li’l web-video networking thingie last night in the East Village. I met two people

I went to a li'l web-video networking thingie last night in the East Village. I met two people who are "internet famous": Sarah Meyers and Bre Pettis.

Sarah is "i.f." for getting ejected from TechCrunch, pranking with Gawker types, and lifecasting about tech; Bre made videos for MAKE magazine, was on Wired Science, and now works at Etsy.

It was a little bit weird. They're both normal, friendly and unpretentious, yet they each did have a faint insidery vibe of "I'm kind of a big deal (on the internet)" about them.
Or maybe it was just weird because I'd never heard of either of them before (well, Bre I sort of did), which means I'm therefore totally out of the loop.

Anyway, they were cool (as were the other people I met), the drinks were free, and a good time was had by all.
