Bei nicht aktuellen Recherchen zur wunderbaren Band Creaky Boards, die ich vor 5 Monaten live kennenlernen durfte, stieß ich auf ein Video, deren Aussage besagte: "Viva La Vida" von Coldplay (Kunstteppich berichtete) sei ein Plagiat des Songs "The Songs I Didn't Write" (Kunstteppich berichtet) von eben diesen Creaky Boards. Eine Ähnlichkeit der Lieder ist nicht zu leugnen. Nun aber, bei einer aktuelleren Forschung entdeckte ich folgendes Unfassbares: Coldplay kopierte (eventuell..auch noch) Joe Satriani -der Herr ist mir leider nicht bekannt. Meine jetzige spektakuläre Entdeckung wirft allerdings alles Bisherige aus der Copyright-Bahn: Colplay oder Creaky Boards kopierten (angeblich) Michael (Kapluckus) oder Chris Martin (Coldplay) Andrew Hoepfner (Creaky Boards), der Michael (Kapluckus) (vielleicht) im Bad traf, der zuvor (möglicherweise) Joe Satrianis "If I could fly" hörte.

Also ich bin für Creaky Boards. ;)

These exerpts are from George Van Eps' marvelous lifelong teaching tome:
Harmonic Mechanisms Vol. III

Pg. 173:
*Webster’s Dictionary describes the meaning of the term ‘progression’ in these words; “the movement of musical parts in harmony’ – Also; “A succession of musical tones”

*Moving one or two notes just one half tone almost always changes the musical meaning and direction of a progression quite a bit.

Pg.173:
Every step in a progression, long or short, is a musical switch track so to speak, that can send the voices in many different directions. Experimenting with, and taking advantage of all the opportunities and possibilities these switch tracks provide is, I believe, the best teacher.

I’m not a musicologist as such, but, as far as I know there are no set formulas or rules for “progression”, just as there are no set formulas or rules for taste.

Voices can go any direction at any time, the harmony can ascend, descend, move sideways, zig-zag, etc. Most of the time progressions are a mixture of all the afore mentioned and the musically artistic result depends in the composers sense of balance, proportion, and taste.

Progressions come in all sizes, they can be smooth and flowing, while others can be quite disjointed and still sound pleasing to the ear. The only real test for music is time – does it wear well, does a person want to hear it again and again, or is once enough?

I don’t mean to infer that progressions are ‘things’ set apart from the music itself. “Progression” is the very heart of music – and that is why short, and semi-long progressions must be worked with and studied carefully in order to be able to understand the complete freedom voices can enjoy.

Progression is a wonderfully exciting independent form that does not have to belong to any one key or mode.

I like to think of the term ‘progression’ as a huge, constantly flowing river of ever changing musical tones that can be tapped into from all angles and attitudes, upstream, downstream, midstream, bottom, top, etc.

When an inquisitive artistic mind taps into this river of flowing tones, the results are usually very interesting, and many times, exciting.

“When lines are in motion, independent of each other, and are flowing freely they should not be frozen into chords as such, because then they are taken out of context, progression is motion.

Pg. 4:
*The average business card is about seven thousandths of an inch thick. When an inner voice is moving on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th strings while the adjoining strings are sounding the fingers only have half the thickness of that card to play with. In other words, an error of three and one half thousandths of an inch will stifle the notes on the adjoining strings.
Always remember that vibrating strings make the space for fingers much much smaller.

Coldplay: Plagio a Joe Satriani

Nuovo capitolo della vicenda che vede i Coldplay accusati dapprima di plagio a causa della stretta somiglianza tra la loro Viva la vida e un brano dei Creaky Boards, band indipendente di Brooklyn
Su YouTube è infatti stato hostato un video, da parte di Andrew Hoepfner (il frontman dei Creaky Boards) che sottolinea le somiglianze tra Violet Hill e un brano della sua band.

Ora, sempre su YouTube, appare un altro video nel quale si sottolineano, questa volta, le analogie tra la stessa Viva la vida ed un brano di Joe Satriani.
Come nel primo caso, anche stavolta probabilmente i Coldplay faranno lo stesso e smentiranno qualsiasi ipotesi, anche involontaria, di plagio. Resterebbe in ogni caso da stabilire chi ha copiato chi tra le tre parti in causa.

O mais recente exemplo é o Little Joy, banda formada por Fabrizio Moretti, baterista do Strokes, Binki Shapiro, sua namorada, e Rodrigo Amarante, do Los Hermanos. E vem por aí duas bandas que prometem! Confira:

Tunde Adebimpe, vocalista do TV On The Radio, Adam Drucker, do Subtle, e Mike Patton, ex-vocalista do grupo Faith No More, também irão se unir para formar uma banda. O trio, ainda sem nome próprio, pretende lançar um CD até o final de 2008, mas não revelou nenhuma data em especial.

Outra nova velha banda será a formada pelos ex-Van Halen Sammy Hagar e Michael Anthony, com Joe Satriani e Chad Smith, do Red Hot Chili Peppers. Eles já gravaram nove músicas e, assim que todos estiverem de férias da turnê com suas respectivas bandas, um CD deve sair.

Nada se cria, tudo se transforma. Até no rock.

The letter “H.” Most artists beginning with “H” are not lower quality than other letters of the alphabet, but their star power is not as great. Hurricane has hard rock in its blood—their bassist and guitar player are both related to members of the classic lineup of Quiet Riot. Hericane Alice was never able to make a huge splash on the music scene, but their music stands up very well to the test of time. Helix is possibly one of the best bands to come from Canada. And Gary Hoey is one of the greatest guitarists that no one has ever heard of. Don’t believe me? Click here for proof. Newcomers Hell N’ Diesel could provide some competition in the future, but they’ve still got some dues to pay.

Sammy Hagar is the one that stands head and shoulders above all others. Long before he joined Van Halen, Hagar was showing the world that there was “Only One Way To Rock,” and hasn’t slowed down despite some bumps in the road. He started out by teaming up with Ronnie Montrose in the early- to mid-70s, penning “Bad Motor Scooter.” He then had a string of very memorable songs from his early solo career, “Heavy Metal,” “I Can’t Drive 55,” and “I’ll Fall In Love Again” among them. In 1984, he joined forced with Neal Schon of Journey in HSAS, scoring a minor hit with “Whiter Shade Of Pale.” Then in 1985, after David Lee Roth’s departure, Sammy Hagar stepped in behind the microphone for the world renowned Van Halen. After several seemingly harmonious years with the band, there was an acrimonious split. Gary Cherone stepped in and Sammy went solo. Cherone didn’t last long, however, and Van Halen attempted reconciliation with the Red Rocker. Three new songs and a world tour later, the singer again left the band and returned to a solo career. It was recently announced that Hagar was teaming up with former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani, and RHCP drummer Chad Smith in a new project code-named Chickenfoot. Throughout the years, either with a band or without, Hagar has shown time after time that there truly is “Only One Way To Rock.”

Despues de tocar juntos por primera vez en febrero pasado, durante un concierto de Sammy Hagar en Las Vegas, el supergrupo formado por el ex cantante de Van Halen, el bajista Michael Anthony, el guitarrista Joe Satriani y el baterista Chad Smith está grabando un álbum.
“Nos emocionó mucho ese show”, dijo Satriani en declaraciones a Billboard. “Nunca antes habíamos tocado juntos y cuando nos bajamos del escenario, nos miramos y pensamos '¡Guau!... hay una conexión entre nosotros, deberíamos hacer algo al respecto'”.
“La semana pasada nos reunimos y grabamos nueve temas. Tan pronto como Sammy y yo terminemos con nuestras respectivas giras, nos reuniremos en el norte de California para terminar el disco”, continuó. “Esperamos mezclar el álbum en enero, y tenerlo listo para abril. Después saldremos de gira”.
El nombre del supergrupo podría ser Chickenfoot, aunque Satriani aclaró que esa era sólo una idea de Hagar, y que habrá que esperar hasta poco antes de la salida del álbum para confirmarlo.

Por cierto no es por echar mas leña a lo que comento John Lydon sobre Coldplay, pero ¿no os parece que la cancion "Viva La vida" es una copia escandalosa de la del video de arriba ?

Chickenfoot Hits the Studio

After playing together live for the first time last February during a solo Sammy Hagar concert in Las Vegas, a new group featuring the ex-Van Halen vocalist, bassist Michael Anthony, guitarist Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith is making an album.

"We were very excited about that show," tells Billboard.com. "We had never played together before and when we walked off stage, we looked at each other like, 'Wow, there's a connection here. We should do something about it.' So last week we were together for five days and we recorded nine tracks.

"As soon as Sammy and myself finish touring our separate solo tours we'll reconvene in Northern California and finish the record," he continues. "We hope to mix the album in January, have it ready for April and then we'll follow it up with a tour."

While the group was reportedly going to call itself Chickenfoot, Satriani said this was only a Hagar working title with a new band name expected closer to the release of the album.

"The style is high-energy, kick-ass rock'n'roll," says Satriani, who is about to begin a stateside tour in support of his latest solo album, "Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock." "We all bring to the table some unusual influences and then we also share a lot of roots. And I think that's where a true color of a band comes out, just how we react to each other. So, it's definitely rock music. We haven't brought each other together to do a techno record."

He adds, "We'll draw from funk, blues and experimental. We know what we want to get out of it. We want passages in songs that develop and we want everyone's personality to be able to come out. So, it's going to be expansive but it's going to be rough."

If the band's three-song performance, which included Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" and Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy," during the Hagar show encore is any indication, it appears that Smith is the glue that holds the unit together.

"The material is really slamming, and anybody who has ever been around Chad knows that he is a very huge personality, a very high-energy guy and his drumming in person is explosive," Satriani says. "This band really gives him carte blanche to go crazy. I think it's the best of what you'd expect, that's the best way to put it. No one is acting out of character."

This DVD gives a lot of nice close-ups of the fretboard and hence the Satriani technique. I challenge my Satriani-detracting good friends Ivan and Roy to say they actually don't like this. Is it really possible there are guitar enthusiasts who don't like this? Surely not.

Joe Satriani se mete a la lista con uno de los temas, si bien no de los primeros de su carrera, que lo dio a conocer en el mundo entero por su deslumbrante talento. El señor cuenta entre sus alumnos a Kirk Hammet de Metallica, Slash de GN'R y al mismísimo Steve Vai, para que los que lo desconozcan se den una ligera idea de quién es este innovador de la guitarra eléctrica y que sin lugar a dudas ha escrito su nombre junto a personajes como Jimmy Page, Hendrix o Eddie Van Halen.

Anticipation is building for the latest project from guitar maestro Joe Satriani. As reported by MusicRadar.com, Satriani is in the studio this week recording with his recently formed “supergroup.”

Comprised of Sammy Hagar, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Satriani himself, the band ¯ dubbed Chickenfoot ¯ hopes to have an album ready for release early next year.

“We are truly over-the-top excited about this,” Satch told MusicRadar. “It’s a very energetic kind of rock music that reminds you of early Zeppelin.”

Satriani went on to say the “Chickenfoot” bandname is merely a temporary moniker. “We just had to call it something for the time being,” he said. “It’s definitely not going to be Chickenfoot. I guarantee it.”

He also addressed a minor controversy stirred up by reports that Hagar claimed the band “could rival Led Zeppelin.”

“I can’t imagine Sam saying anything like that,” Satriani told MusicRadar. “I think [the comment] was just twisted.”

It seems that, 20 years since his landmark album "Surfing With The Alien", the Satchmeister is still itching to do new things!

In case you weren't up to date on news that doesn't matter, Chickenfoot is recording a new album very soon. The band consists of Sammy Hagar(ex-Van Halen), Michael Anthony(ex-Van Halen, Chad Smith(Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Joe Satriani. Here's what Satriani has been saying about the band:

"We are truly over-the-top excited about this, it's a very energetic kind of rock music that reminds you of early Led Zeppelin."

He said this about the awesome name:

"We just had to call it something for the time being," he said. "It's definitely not going to be Chickenfoot. I guarantee it."

It's better for them if they choose a different name. I spoke with a band who said they would rather choose the title of The Band Who Kills Everyone At Their Shows than Chickenfoot. And if you believe it rivals Zeppelin, you're stupid. Plain fucking stupid.

My 10 favorite shredder guitarists

As a teenager, I loved me some heavy metal guitar, especially those guitarists that are now known as "shredders" who could play insanely fast. These were, and still are, some of my favorites, in alphabetical order, by surname (because it's hard to put them in order, they're all great):

1. Jason Becker-- He and the next guitarist were the tandem in a group called Cacophony that was probably one of the fastest guitar-playing bands I had ever heard. Loved them. Becker was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in 1989, one week after joining David Lee Roth's band as Steve Vai's replacement. He was given five years to live. He's still alive. For more on his incredible story, see his site with links to his MySpace page, where videos round out his story (of which I had no idea until I read it last night).

2. Marty Friedman-- Friedman is now in a band called Lovefixer in Japan with vocalist Shinichiro "Sin" Suzuki. Here Friedman is by himself:

3. Paul Gilbert-- I first heard Gilbert with the group Racer X, and later, of all places, heard him play a solo on a Christian rock album, Revelations by The Darrell Mansfield Band. However, this is probably the song that I will never forget:

4. Greg Howe-- A friend introduced me to both Howe and the next guitarist, I believe, as well as Racer X.

The one thing that impresses me about Eric Clapton is that he is a karaoke singer's dream. Ouch, you might say, but Eric has always been more comfortable being behind a guitar rather than the mic, that's why he has expansive guitar solos, ...maybe. Now don't get me wrong, i think he carries his voice very well and would no doubt make me look like a cat on a Friday night hanging out on some fence meowing at a full moon in F flat.

The only gripe i have about Mr Clapton is the "Legendary" status bestowed as a guitar player. I wrote on Number 636 (Jeff Beck), the "Top 100 Guitarist of all Time" by Rolling Stone Magazine rank Clapton at #4. I completely disagree with that assessment. There are far better guitar players than Clapton and even to most points, Hendrix. Clapton is great, yes, but not earth shattering, maybe ranked as #16 say .... but #4??? Neil Young, as an example wipes out the other two i mentioned with ease (& he's ranked 83!), even Jimmy Page (ranked 9)is more technically better than Clapton and don't even get me started with Satriani(#? not even ranked! ) vs Clapton or even SR Vaughan (#7)vs Clapton! (Did i mention Richard Thompson?) Feel free to disagree anytime you want, its like the Fart Button "Yanno you want to". (Yes Sally Gill of Parnell, Auckland ... this one is for you)

By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations -- the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith -- which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. That it took Clapton so long to go out on his own, however, was evidence of a degree of reticence unusual for one of his stature. And his debut album, though it spawned the Top 40 hit "After Midnight," was typical of his self-effacing approach: it was, in effect, an album by the group he had lately been featured in, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. Not surprisingly, before his solo debut had even been released, Clapton had retreated from his solo stance, assembling from the D&B&F ranks the personnel for a group, Derek & the Dominos, with which he played for most of 1970. Clapton was largely inactive in 1971 and 1972, due to heroin addiction, but he performed a comeback concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London on January 13, 1973, resulting in the album Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert (September 1973). But Clapton did not launch a sustained solo career until July 1974, when he released 461 Ocean Boulevard, which topped the charts and spawned the number one single "I Shot the Sheriff."

The persona Clapton established over the next decade was less that of guitar hero than arena rock star with a weakness for ballads. The follow-ups to 461 Ocean Boulevard, There's One in Every Crowd (March 1975), the live E.C. Was Here (August 1975), and No Reason to Cry (August 1976), were less successful. But Slowhand (November 1977), which featured both the powerful "Cocaine" (written by J.J. Cale, who had also written "After Midnight") and the hit singles "Lay Down Sally" and "Wonderful Tonight," was a million-seller. Its follow-ups, Backless (November 1978), featuring the Top Ten hit "Promises," the live Just One Night (April 1980), and Another Ticket (February 1981), featuring the Top Ten hit "I Can't Stand It," were all big sellers.

Clapton's popularity waned somewhat in the first half of the '80s, as the albums Money and Cigarettes (February 1983), Behind the Sun (March 1985), and August (November 1986) indicated a certain career stasis. But he was buoyed up by the release of the box set retrospective Crossroads (April 1988), which seemed to remind his fans of how great he was. Journeyman (November 1989) was a return to form. It would be his last new studio album for nearly five years, though in the interim he would suffer greatly and enjoy surprising triumph. On March 20, 1991, Clapton's four-year-old son was killed in a fall. While he mourned, he released a live album, 24 Nights (October 1991), culled from his annual concert series at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and prepared a movie soundtrack, Rush (January 1992). The soundtrack featured a song written for his son, "Tears in Heaven," that became a massive hit single.

In March 1992, Clapton recorded a concert for MTV Unplugged that, when released on an album in August, became his biggest-selling record ever. Two years later, Clapton returned with a blues album, From the Cradle, which became one of his most successful albums, both commercially and critically. Crossroads, Vol. 2: Live in the Seventies, a box set chronicling his live work from the '70s, was released to mixed reviews. In early 1997, Clapton, billing himself by the pseudonym "X-Sample," collaborated with keyboardist/producer Simon Climie as the ambient new age and trip-hop duo T.D.F. The duo released Retail Therapy to mixed reviews in early 1997.

Clapton retained Climie as his collaborator for Pilgrim, his first album of new material since 1989's Journeyman. Pilgrim was greeted with decidedly mixed reviews upon its spring 1998 release, but the album debuted at number four and stayed in the Top Ten for several weeks on the success of the single "My Father's Eyes." In 2000, Clapton teamed up with old friend B.B. King on Riding with the King, a set of blues standards and material from contemporary singer/songwriters. Another solo outing, entitled Reptile, followed in early 2001. Three years later, Clapton issued Me and Mr. Johnson, a collection of tunes honoring the Mississippi-born bluesman Robert Johnson. 2005's Back Home, Clapton's 14th album of original material, reflected his ease with fatherhood. What does Rolling Stone say about Eric Clapton?

Eric Clapton's solo albums have tended to be so evenhanded and laconic that they often seem interchangeable. His pain was always so apparent that every move he made seemed frozen for eternity. At first glance, Slow Hand does nothing to alter that pattern—a few good tracks interspersed between the usual filler—but there's a lot more going on here beneath the surface. Clapton is showing signs of psychic rehabilitation. His love songs are pointedly realistic. In a chilling moment of self-revelation called "Next Time You See Her," he focuses his long-sublimated anger at losing his lover. Perhaps most importantly, for the first time since leaving Cream he seems comfortable with his image as the hotshot guitarist, using his old Yardbirds nickname for the album title and flashing the old superstar form.

Except for Eric's great slide guitar playing on the hard-edged slow blues, "Mean Old Frisco," the rest of the album is more subdued, with the influence of country songwriter Don Williams dominating Eric's writing. The devotional love song, "Wonderful Tonight," the sprightly shuffle "Lay Down Sally" and the calmly vengeful "Next Time You See Her" have the same modest intensity and forthrightness of "We're All the Way," the Williams song Clapton covers here. On "Next Time You See Her" Clapton sings, "And if you see her again, I will surely kill you," an unusual enough sentiment for him. But the line is all the more powerful because it is delivered quietly, with matter-of-fact resignation and even a touch of sympathy for the guy who will be his victim. In as striking of an effect as this it's easy to see that Clapton has learned the lesson he's been striving for all these years. He is in touch with the horrible moral power and long-suffering self-righteousness that is the essence of the blues. And that knowledge gives him the power to stand up and be himself.
