It has just now (21/01/2008) been announced on BBC News 24 that 347 laptops belonging to the British Ministry of Defense have been stolen since 2004....I have no link to this story yet as the news is just breaking but this is nothing short of mind boggling. Apart from information in relation to credit cards etc contained on these laptops they have sufficient personal information to created several thousand false identities... I'll add a link as soon as possible....in the meantime there's no need for me to comment any more on this madness.... Here is an earlier report about just one theft of a laptop.

HERE IS A LINK TO THIS STORY . I will update it as more details become available.

I have recently started this blog on WordPress and in the course of setting it up have spent quite

I have recently started this blog on Wordpress and in the course of setting it up have spent quite a bit of time on forums and checking through the faq and help pages of several sites. Whether it's an rss feed or tags or HTML you need help with it's to the good people of these boards that we turn to for help. And they are of course wonderful people , scholars and gentlemen all , a credit to their families and the community at large. Where would we be without them.
I have been messing about with blogs and web sites for a couple of years now but in a casual sort of way and am very much an amateur when it comes to computers. But recently I went out and got myself a Lonovo/IBM laptop and decided that this was the ideal opportunity to get a little more serious about my online activity , to start blogging in a slightly more professional manner. To stop messing around and actually and try to realise some of the potential of this media.
Of course in the process of doing this , starting my new blog and all that I have of nessesity gone back to these help pages and forums for advise. Like a lot of people I check out several sites and look at pages of questions and answers but as I'm not very good at the technical side of these things I usually end up having to still go back to the forums and post my question.
Now we have all had to go through this right of passage. Whether it's a blog or web site we are trying to set up or just trying our hand at linux we have all been there. We've done it all and have the tee shirt to prove it. But are we happy with the service we get? For it is a service , notwithstanding the fact that it's free and the people involved are not getting paid. And like any service we have of course the right to express an opinion about it. A lot of people are reluctant to do so as it might seem mean and ungrateful on their part to level criticism at something that is being given free by people who are motivated only by a desire to help.
As I have said , I have used these services and placed questions on many a forum and am grateful for the real advice and help I have gotten but I would have to say that they have more often than not left me feeling that I could cheerfully kill someone. At any given time that you visit these forums and help sites you will see that there are plenty of newbies there. They are not shy to declare that are new at blogging or whatever the site relates to and indeed will go out of their way to let you know that are newbies , beginners , total amateur's etc. etc. and that they have in short no knowledge of, let's say , blogging. And so they put their question. But when the answer comes it is invariably technical to a greater of lesser degree. It is noticeable also that the same questions are being asked over and over again. It's not unusual to find these same questions being repeated not just month by month or week by week or even day after day but quite literally minute by minute. The reason of course is that those who put the questions will usually have checked for similar questions and found lots and lots but the answers will more often than not have been far from clear. This is very noticeable if you visit a linux site. Indeed when it comes to linux most help boards and forums will make no bones about the fact that they will expect you to have learned quite a bit about it before you put any questions at all. In real life this would be the equivilant of you being asked for directions in the street and for you to answer that you were not prepared to help if they had not gone to the trouble of buying a map. This kind of logic is the norm in the computer world and is part and parcel of the culture. Only in this culture will you buy a product and then be asked to pay an extra 50 or 60 euros to have it checked before it is sent out to you. And only in this computer culture will you pay 300 plus euros for an operating system and not be able to sell it on Ebay if you decide you don't want it any more.
I'm sure by now that I have alienated quite a few reader but I am simply pointing to the reality of the situations. No one can seriousley question the fact that there is a kind of snobbery in the world of blogging , linux and the all the rest.

And now that I've gotten all that off my chest excuse me while I go and give the dog a kick.

I was on IOL the other day and I came across this photo
and the first thing that came into my mind was a line or
part of a line in a poem I had read some time ago. It spoke
of someone being.......
......"As lonely as the fatest man in the world"
I don't know why that poem came into my head as whatever else may be said of him he does not look like
a sad or unhappy individual.
He does have the look of a biker about him. And his
nakedness may simply be due to him living in Florida
or some such warm state. I assume he's american.
He looks american.
In fact he looks as if he might be a blogger.
Or a Gerry Garcia fan.
Someone has probably written a book about him...
...."The Fat Man in History".
