The best movie i've seen in a long time. Great Acting, Action, Plot, villains, & Gadgets!
Damn this movie was Dope. It was surely worth the one hour wait in line and also having to put up with those 12 year old girls in the mall dressed like THIS!
It's a Must Watch.

This has been the best summer for superhero movies. Ever.
Falling in the same league of greatness as

This has been the best summer for superhero movies. Ever.

Falling in the same league of greatness as Iron Man and Hellboy 2, The Dark Knight holds up just as strong. Though truth be told, the movie doesn’t really feel like a superhero movie. Sure, there is a hero running around in a costume (occasionally unintentionally looking humorous), and a villain intent on madness and mayhem, but in a post-9/11 world, the amount of terror that the Joker brings to the city of Gotham feels frighteningly real. With no superpowers, no random freak accidents, no displays of too-futuristic technology (there is some, but like in Iron Man, the technology seems genuine and believable, even if we don’t actually have it yet), this movie seems almost plausible.

But what makes the movie most enjoyable is the almost non-stop suspense. The Joker makes it apparent very early that he does not hesitate to kill and shows no mercy. As such, nearly every character featured is placed in a life-threatening situation, and some do die. Adding to the suspense is the slow and gradual revelation of the many facets of the Joker’s plan. This causes me to ask “Do you think he plans it all out ahead, or makes it up as he goes along?” (And yes, I stole that from Pirates of the Caribbean.) Not only is The Joker an extremely well written character, Heath Ledger is perfect for the part. As much as Robert Downey Jr. was Tony Stark, Heath Ledger is the Joker. It is therefore both satisfying and saddening that this is his final role. This is by-far the best super-villain adaption to grace the silver screen yet.

Yet with all the focus on The Joker, it feels as though he is the main character - and indeed, he may be. Harvey Dent seems to be the other chief player, as we see the major evolution (or is it devolution?) of his character. Both characters maintain a believable persona, and while extreme, they never seem over-the-top. Batman seems to take side stage as he's put more on a reactionary role to the various crimes of The Joker and other gangsters. Nonetheless, Batman is successfully able to display the symbol of heroism that he is throughout the film.

While I thoroughly enjoyed this film, my main complaint can be summarized in three words: “Why so serious?” The Dark Knight is perhaps the most aptly named movie that I have seen because it is simply that: dark. Between all the scenes of grungy crime, of terror-filled suspense, and occasional grotesqueness, there is very little room for any humor. Given this is supposed to be a depressing film, but its serious overtone seems to weigh it down in several places. Even in the rare moments when we do get a chuckle, it is almost always the result of dark humor. Am I the only one who thinks edge-of-your-seat movies can still make you laugh? Cloverfield sure did. (Grade: A-)

-M. Staples

A Second Opinion

I am sure most of you now know what the movie is about so let me just cut to the chase and say that The Dark Knight actually manages to live up to the hype. Heath Ledger IS that good as The Joker and his Oscar worthy performance should go down as one for the ages. The grounded storyline IS a crime epic that manages to transcend the comic book trappings in just about every way. The cast IS that good, as everyone brings their "A" game to each and every scene.

To be totally honest, the only complaints I can think of have to do with the nature of Batman in general. As Staples mentions in his review, there are moments where Batman feels just a touch out of place amongst the deadly serious, realistic tone of the film. Also, Bale's "Batman voice" works well enough, but when given lots of dialogue to speak in that voice, it comes off as forced and a bit silly. These are minor complaints, however, and I only mention them to justify why I did not give the film an A+ instead of...(Grade: A)

-Kyle Posluszny

A Third Opinion

This is easily the best comic book movie ever made. It's also the best movie of 2008 (so far). When stripped down, the movie's a crime drama with just a hint of superheroics (and super villainy) thrown in as dressing. Its relevant subject matter - the post 9/11 theme - is disturbing, yet compelling. A lot of people compare this movie to Michael Mann's Heat, and I agree with that. And while there may be some parallels the two movies share, The Dark Knight easily stands on its own as a superior offering (not to mention more unique).

This version of The Joker is perhaps the scariest incarantion yet. He's not a man transformed, nor is he a man with an agenda. He's pure chaos and when he says that all law abiding citizens are just a small push away from becoming just like him, it's easy to believe. Throughout the movie, The Joker uses this mantra to test the law, the citizens, and all the key players that dwell in Gotham City. And in the end, he's proven wrong on a broad scale. But the damage he inflicts to Gotham's infrastructure is undeniable. Everyone who survives his onslaught of terror is changed morally for the worse. No one is left unscathed, clean, or innocent.

I can't say enough about how tight the script to this movie is. Never did I ever feel a single line of dialogue felt out of place or cheesey. The runtime definitely feels like two and a half hours by the end of the movie, but it's by no means a slow movie. It's just emotionally exhausting, and you'll understand when you see what these characters go through. I won't go into performances since you've probably read through all the initial buzz, but I will say the entire cast is spot on perfect. Because of Heath Ledger's untimely demise, most of the attention is being directed towards his performance which is brilliant. However, I must stress that Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart do beyond exceptional work as well.

I can't see Christopher Nolan making a better Batman movie than this. Part of me just wants him to hang it up and move on to something else. But another part of me never wants his unfettering vision of Gotham City to ever die. Because a super hero movie has never felt so grounded. So real. No other villain will ever be able to challenge Batman at this level. The only person I can see Batman taking on next and having some semblance of urgency is Superman (Dark Knight Returns style). (Grade: E for Epic)

Yes. It’s that simple! If not for the Joker I doubt anyone can say that.
I went to watch this movi

Yes. It’s that simple! If not for the Joker I doubt anyone can say that.

I went to watch this movie scared because I had so much of expectations from this movie. The movie had everything working for it. A brilliant prequel (if you can call that reboot of the franchise) in Batman Begins. A charismatic star like Christian Bale at the helm playing the caped crusader, directorial reign in the hand of the one and only Christopher ‘Memento’ Nolan, an all time dream star cast of Morgan Freeman (Luscius Fox), Michael Caine (Alfred), Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon), Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawson – Yes, Thank You – No Katie Holmes please) and the late Heath Ledger (Joker). Add to that a massive, massive pre – Oscar buzz and a supernova like marketing hype like never before. Incandescent tributes were given by almost all major movie critics. Unprecedented for a movie based on a comic indeed.

Each and every review / article was read. All teasers, trailers, virals that had remotely to do with The Dark Knight were viewed and absorbed. As the day started nearing I became more and more restless. Tickets in IMAX – 1st day 1st show was booked. On D-day had to bunk office for half a day. After all it’s Batman and I am pop-culture-addiction’s wet dream. The question now is was it worth it? Was it?

Here we go…

Talk has been floating around as to how Heath Ledger has owned the character of Joker and made Nicholson’s act a comic memory of the past. And then some reviewers even wrote about an online petition which they would sign for a posthumous Oscar to Ledger. What ridiculous farce; Utter Nonsense.

Okay, where is that petition. I am gonna sign it right now. :) Starting from the superb bank heist sequence to the climactic battle with Batman, Heath Ledger brings a menacing and weird eccentricity to the character which is unnerving and actually scary. Ledger (Joker) completely owns the movie.

The greatest trick Andy Kaufman ever played was his death as many people believe (yours truly being one of them). Somehow I want to believe the greatest trick that Heath Ledger played as Joker was his death. When the Joker tells the Batman “we can do this forever” you just can’t help smiling at the irony. All those one liners from the trailers come across you like a whiplash. And what rampage he brings along with him. The Blown up buildings, vast debris and the bloody turf wars – only to send a message across that he owns the city!

The Dark Knight is not only about the Joker. Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon is solidly convincing as is Michael Caine in the role of Alfred. But for me Aaron Eckhart was sensational and like everyone else I believed in Harvey Dent. Momentarily, as by now all of you know how he becomes “Two Face”. The transition doesn’t seem forced or corny which for me was very important and you can see from the beginning Harvey Dent has an edgy dark side which is noticed and exploited to catastrophic effect by the Joker.

The action sequences, the sequences shot in IMAX cameras (I did have a minor headache after the movie – I suspect the changing aspect ratio to be the culprit) and the soundtrack (by Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard) are a blast.

The Batpod is a thing of beauty and its introduction is one of the high points in the movie. The movie actually improves on Batman Begins and the reason for that IMHO is more Batman moments (apart from the Joker factor). Who is interested in a billionaire playboy when you already have a Tony Stark who was sensational in Ironman. Despite the comparisons Bale’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne is infectious as ever. The conflicts within him are brought over effortlessly on screen through his conversations with Alfred. But when Bale becomes Batman he is just phenomenal. The quick disappearances, the fights; The stealth and the flights. Absolute delight.

The best thing about the movie is Christopher Nolan’s direction. This is what happens if you have top notch material (Batman graphic novels - Batman: The Long Halloween, The Killing Joke as well the superb script by Chris and Jonathan Nolan) and an A-class filmmaker like Nolan - MAGIC.

The movie is a testament to the fact that Batman is not your any other superhero. The dark tones throughout the movie give the respect that Batman deserves - as an ace detective, a vigilante, an outcast, a freak, a fugitive. He won’t do everything by the book. The Batman has to endure because he can. He is not a hero that Gotham deserves.

He is the Dark Knight.

N.B: I don’t care whether the academy decides to reward the movie and Ledger because for me The Dark Knight was The Movie and Ledgers’ was The Performance.

If Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight isn't the best superhero movie ever, then it's pretty damn close. The Dark Knight takes place in a much less stylized Gotham City than its predecessor Batman Begins did, and so the action, though still summer blockbuster scaled and often spectacular, takes on more of an immediacy. Nolan has also much improved as a director of said action: Whereas Batman Begins was marred by incoherent action scenes, it's not only clear what's going on in The Dark Knight, but also clear what's at stake. The acting is also top notch, with Christian Bale and Gary Oldman doing effectively understated work as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jim Gordon, respectively, Aaron Eckhardt very good in a very difficult role as Harvey Dent, and Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman employing their considerable charm and intelligence as Alfred and Lucius. Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel from Katie Holmes, and puts her own spin on the character, adding some shading and dimension. The role that will get the most attention, and perhaps justifiably so, is Heath Ledger as the Joker, who frequently got applause for his scenes at the premiere midnight showing I saw. He drew laughs while at the same time being utterly hateful and frequently scary. It's a mesmerizing, unforgettable performance. Nolan, however, is a smart enough writer and director not to let Ledger's Joker take over the movie, instead limiting his appearances and then using them to maximum effect. Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard have also crafted a unique, often eerie score to complement the often stunning visuals onscreen. The Dark Knight is not without flaws, mild overlength, for one, and there's some hokeyness that creeps into the last act, but in general, it's the one superhero movie that absolutely means to transcend its genre, and ends up, especially in its last moments, elevating itself into the realm of myth and legend.

Joss Whedon. You know, the guy behind Firefly, the Buffy TV series and that Serenity movie? Well he's done a little side project called Dr. Horrible, and it's anything but that. With all the superhero madness going on, Whedon takes a comic approach with this tiny webseries. It's broken into three acts, each better than the last.

It follows a wannabe super villain, Dr. Horrible, as he tries to join a league of other bad guys. It's filled with drama, laughter, action and Neil Patrick Harris. Yes, fucking, Neil Patrick Harris, playing an evil doctor. Oh, and did I mention it's also a musical? If any of those interest you at all, you really need to check this out. If you didn't already catch the link in one of the automatic del.icio.us link updates, click the banner.

Oh, and watch while the watchin' is good. All signs point to this costing money to see in the near future. Not that it isn't worth it, though.

July 18, 2008 was indeed a dark night. It's the day of our much anticipated movie dayout for The Dark Knight, and we were all wearing black! Well, at least with something black on. And we swear that we didn't plan to wear the same color. Probably Heath's spirit is the one to blame haha! Even when we had our dinner that evening, two of us had Black Pepper Pasta. Hmmm. Anyway, our get together also became a send off party sort of thing for a Popoy friend Jojit who is leaving for Dubai next week. Good thing he was able to join us for dinner because I and a friend failed to go to his birthday party last July 4. So it was such a fun and memorable GT! Unfortunately he wasn't able to join us watch the movie because we decided to go for the last full show (because Mei is causing the delay haha!), and the cute little Pia can't stay that long that's why they need to go home early after dinner.

Dinner at Cavana in Megamall

Me, Jojit, Pia & Mel

My Black Pepper Pasta with beef chunks

And the Dark Knights haha

And now about the movie. It is actually difficult to find the exacting words as to how we all loved it, but witnessing how well the film was made is reason enough to rave. Not in every breathtaking or amusing scenes we'd go "Hanep!", "Galeng!", or "Wow!". The Dark Knight is the most different and prolific of all Batman films, I must say. The story's in-depth attack on the people involving Bruce Wayne was extremely well crafted that you'd really get drawn to each and every character. The ensemble cast is solid rock! I mean, who could even argue on having Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman in one big film. Their acting was superb!

And yes, Heath Ledger! THE Heath Ledger. My, he owned the movie. Outstanding performance! Gave me creeps every now and then, a proof that it was a very effective portrayal of Joker. But watching him afterwards saddened me, knowing that this was his last film and we won't be able to experience his brilliance anymore. On a lighter side, his last is indeed a BIG one! I would give him an Ace with this one, and probably the Academy will, too. Heath might win next year's Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Oh, I can't wait for that! ;)

So, the other day I was telling Blade my Tale Of Woe about how I couldn't go see Batman... and tears were streaming down my face. Mebbe, I thought, Just mebbe this is a bigger deal than I originally thought. I should Do Something. So I called a friend and basically arranged it so that I could go see Batman today. And all is right with the world. :)

It was good. I am grateful I was able to go. It was also very dark and intense. And I think I like it more, now that it has settled into my bones.

After the movie, I had enough time to fill up my gas tank and then book it back home.

From the time I left the gas station, I have been fielding phone calls. (Actually, my first phone call-- not counting my sister calling right at midnight-- was at 11:00 this morning.) When I got home, I found a gazillion emails and birthday cards and wishes. And I've been on the phone ever since. I guess it's a good thing I didn't plan on much more than a movie. ;)

Oh, yeah. I feel the love. I have the most amazingest, awesomest (like a hotdog!) friends and family. You made my day. No, really.

Thank you.

And now, I leave you with this thought for the day, because it's Muppets, I just discovered it today, and I just can't resist.

I am not here to post the review of this movie “Kismat Konnection” as I have not watched

I am not here to post the review of this movie "Kismat Konnection" as I have not watched it. So the "kismat" did not connect as the prints were not released in PVR here in Bangalore. My wife was very much awaiting for this movie and I had to keep an eye on PVR's website as a result, beginning from Wednesday evening itself. Everytime I browsed that site it displayed every other movie but "Kismat Konnection". Hey Guys, were you trying to be secretive ?
"Hey, Dude, we know that you are trying to access our website and we will make it sure that you do not get the ticket".
and their phone number which is so very much written in bold letters on their website never works.
"Hey, Harsh is trying to call our number. Mind it he should not be successful in getting the line".

Still, I was trying to be optimistic thinking its only Wednesday and they would surely open the bookings by Thursday night. My expectation plummeted from the Mt. Everest when the D-day came and I was able to hear a lady's voice over the phone.

Lady: Hello, PVR.
Me: Is there anything wrong with your phone ?
Lady: Excuse Me, Sir.
Me: Anyways, Aren't you people releasing this movie ?
Lady: No Sir, We do not have any information about the prints as yet. For today, we are not going to show it. The exact status can only be told after 5 pm. Do you mind calling us again after 5?
Me(f***, again): Again... I am playing with this number from past 2 days and you have picked it up today. I don't know when you are going to receive my call next.
Lady: No sir, this is the only number we have and we do pick it.
Me(You are telling me, that you pick up the phone): Anyways.. Thank you for the information.

I replaced the receiver.

and the loop continued.... One thing has been added to the scenario. The reviews are out and the ratings are not good. Good for us. Somewhere the Kismat Konnected.... :)

“The Dark Knight” is the second batman film by director Christopher Nolan following the

"The Dark Knight" is the second batman film by director Christopher Nolan following the success of "Batman Begins" in 2005. Christian Bale resumed as Batman/Bruce Wayne and this time, he teams up with Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman) to tackle the mobs. Katie Homes is replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal for the role of Rachael Dawes, still a prosecutor now in love with Gotham's new District Attorney, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Michael Cain and Morgan Freeman continue as Butler Alfred and Lucius Fox respectively.

But what is the really eye-catching, attention grabbing cast of the show perhaps, is Heath Ledger as Joker. He gained to fame through Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, a very well known gay show. His performance as Joker was nothing to do with gay. If you haven't catch this show yet, be expecting a very strong, dark, scheming and sinister Joker, very different from the one by Jack Nicholson in "Batman".

His death on 22nd Jan 2008, after the filming of this show adds another sombre tone to the whole show. The already dark atmosphere and tone of the show dimmed more.

Ok, what is the plot? Pls stop here if you plan to catch the show and hate spoilers.

Batman has to some extent, become an icon in crime-fighting as well as an outlaw. Thugs are scared of him, police wants to hunt him down. So the mobs are desperate, Joker appears. He offered to help the mobs get rid of Batman, but he is ultimately not after the money.

He is out, on a philosophical level to prove that man, even the most noble ones like Harvey Dent and Batman, can be brought down and corrupted. He managed to do so with Harvey Dent. Even when the Joker was caught and locked in a police station, i cannot help but feel that things are not over yet. It was all part of his plan, one that got Harvey into a accident while Batman was trying to save him. Harvey became Two-Face and both he and Bruce Wayne lost Rachel Dawes.

There are conversations in the show, between Alfred and Bruce about what Batman should do, can do and cannot do. Joker has quite successfully exposed the weakness of Batman, that Batman, as a crime-fighter, cannot resort to under-hand means to achieve his goals. And there are occasions where Batman nearly lost it.

1) Storyline - 28 / 30

"The Dark Knight" picks up from where "Batman Begins" left off. This is not your typical super-heroes movies that focuses only on the superhero and his antics. Rather, this show take a deeper look into the mindset of Batman and Joker and Harvey Dent.

2) Entertainment value - 24 / 25

Extremely entertaining, even though the show is long at 150min+. Just when you think everything is coming to an end when Joker is caught, it isn't.

3) Cast - 23 / 25

I enjoyed Heath Ledger's performance very much. I think he really spent a lot of effort on this role, he really went into it. To prepare for the role, Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulating the character's posture, voice and psychology, and kept a diary, in which he recorded the Joker's thoughts and feelings to guide himself during his performance.

Bale didn't disappoint too. He showed what Bruce Wayne's struggle to continue as Batman and what it takes to bring a criminal like Joker down, especially when he lost Rachael Dawes.

4) Pace / Flow - 18 / 20

The story continues strongly and towards the last 20mins, it differs from other typical super-heroes shows by not having a climax fight. Rather, it ends off with the viewer feeling for Batman.

Overall: 93 / 100

Again, i must stressed that this is not your typical Spider-man, Superman kinda shows. While being extremely captivating, it also brings down the overall atmosphere and the viewer will leave the theatre a sadder person, entertained nonetheless.

Should make it to one of the top three movies of this year. Heath Ledger should get an award, at least a nomination for his role as Joker.

Jane Austen is quite possibly one of my literary heroines. I won't list twenty reasons why, but I will list the men her heroines fall in love with...if you have never read (or watched) any of her stories, I encourage you to do so.

7. Henry Tilney, whose home in Northanger Abbey may be haunted.
6. Captain Frederick Wentworth, once rejected suitor of Anne Elliot, due to the Persuasion of her family.
5 & 4. Edward Ferrars and Colonel Brandon, who marry sisters in Sense and Sensibility.
3. Edmund Bertram, the younger son in Mansfield Park. First great movie quote:

Surely you and I are beyond speaking when words are clearly not enough.

2. George Knightly, an older and wiser friend to Emma. At some point, one of them says:

If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am. —You hear nothing but truth from me.

and of course,

1. Fitzwilliam Darcy, aka Mr. Darcy of Pride and Prejudice fame. His killer line:

In vain have I struggled. It will never do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.

Well now I know what is close to hell on earth and its all because of the Pope!! We live about five minutes walk away from the racecourse where the Pope is to celebrate Mass tomorrow and tonight is to take part in the vigil....where hundreds of thousands of people are anticipated to sleep over afterwards. So I shall do a countdown to the event...starting from now and perhaps in the process retain some of my sanity! As you may know I am a Christian albiet a low key one and am thrilled that the youth of the world want to celebrate their faith, however there are some issues which must be addressed .....not ignored so I shall attempt to do that here.

As I walked through our local shopping centre in the vain hope of getting some peace and quiet I chatted to some young Aussie pilgrims who had also come inside for a few hours to try to regroup ie sleep on each others shoulders, and in the process get away from the constant music and noise. They said they were sleeping out tonight but were exhausted by the constant music and the sheer volume of it and when asked why they thought the music was like this they said they felt it was aimed at keeping them going, keeping them awake.

Okay what noise is she talking about you ask? Well there are many many helicopters at present overhead.....its worse than APEX last year and for days now there has been almost constant music being blasted from the racecourse....see my other post. And this is a residential area twenty minutes by bus from the CBD. There are events all over Sydney, I am just going to report on what is affecting myself and others who live here and are impacted by this. The level of sound is unbelievable...all our doors and windows are shut....we have television on and we still cannot get away from it.

I bought some silicone ear plugs from the chemist for tomorrow although we are going to see the Batman movie.....and stay in the Westfield complex for most of the day....its all relative really as we usually find that noisy!!! The pharmacist Amanda said that she had heard that the vigil is largely silent so that is something although the helicopters shall be constant due to television and security coverage. When I walked through the centre several monks or priests from either the US or Canada came through in their white robes, accompanied by several young pilgrims. They looked prepared as they had sleeping bags and bedrolls however a lot of the pilgrims I saw had very little apart from each other to keep them warm.

A lot of the pilgrims have I Pods etc so maybe they are tuning the noise out to some degree....so does anyone know if this is a stategy for meetings or festivals like this one.......bearing in mind its a whole week of it? Also shall be trying to find out if this was considered by the state government ....they warned us of the disruption with traffic and closed roads etc ..was this covered?

So over the next few hours I shall cover

...where is the money going from the Mass tomorrow....half a million people and they are paying for the privilege.

....how cold it is tonight for the pilgrims

....what is going on when the Pope arrives and what the the vigil is all about....research coming up!

OK, so I saw The Dark Knight tonight and and what can I say? It was better than Batman Begins (though I still loved that movie). heath's Joker was very dark and disturbing, which was an interesting contrast to Jack Nicholson's Joker. I can understand why the role haunted Heath ledger (by many accounts)

There are some nasty surprises, which I will not spoil here, but suffice it to say that you'll be shocked more than once.
