Geez, I'm slightly understanding how those old 80's celebs feels when they're asked 'Where have you been?'

I don't know how much readership is still entrusting that I will keep up the good work but here I am, settled and ready to tackle the world.

Quick update, during the months I wasn't posting (and they were very...long months) I was actually working at a dental office, making pretty good money, since I couldn't launch a journalism career right away without a vehicle and this dental office was conveniently right next door to where I was living in beautiful Lumberton, New Jersey. (For anyone that knows or lives in Lumberton that is supposed to be a joke, Lumberton is a miserable little place haha.)

Anyway, I was living with a friend, and not exactly loving it. I shared a room with people I hardly knew, yes I said people as in plural, and my friend was so cheap I actually spent my first New Jersey summer without air conditioning. I had many sleepless nights. Lets just say my roommates snored right on through, very loudly.

But the past is the past and I am currently living in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, probably one of the cutest and coolest beach towns in New Jersey. For those of you who don't know, this town is one square mile, a dry town (no bars or liquor stores--my college days are over anyway) but it is not far from, well anything. Belmar, a well known party town is 10 minutes away and I am literally one block from the beach. It was almost like some higher power took pity on my past months and sent me to a beach town just in time to miss the crowds, no parking and extreme heat. Not to mention I reside with my boyfriend whom I've been trying to live with, but financial restraints were stopping me. Oh and did I mention I got a car? Its been two years since I've owned a car and I'm loving it.

Journalism jobs have been, well, less than easy to attain. Seeing as how bigger newspaper companies are laying off workers left and right, I'm looking at the smaller community papers, which I believe, fit me better anyway. I am not too worried that I haven't found a job in the field of my choice yet, I've only been searching for less than a month, I may have graduated but like I said, didn't have a car. Getting a job in journalism without a car is like applying to be a pizza hut delivery man and asking if you'd get a company car.

This is getting a little long for my liking, so I'll be posting again soon, hopefully twice a week again like I have in the past. Don't lose faith, I am here to stay, at least for the next several months. Thanks for reading and I hope all is well

Good luck and happy living

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit… Matthew 28:19

Revival

Tonight in Ocean Grove, the Bishop Donald Hilliard is coming to town and there will be revival. And praise be to God, there will be Compassion too.

Some [tonight] will come to know Jesus Christ for the first time, some will have the Spirit of Christ Jesus renewed and resuscitated within their hearts, and then there are some who will never have either of those opportunities. It is for that latter group the Compassion ministry was birthed.

Belief vs. Relief

Oh, you might think that the Compassion ministry is a ‘relief’ organization that provides food, healthcare, and educational opportunities to children around the world living in poverty, but that is not an accurate representation at all.

In reality, Compassion is not about relief, but ‘belief’. While it is true that Compassion does afford all those things to needy children, the true mission [of Compassion] is to deliver these children from spiritual poverty while simultaneously providing the means by which they might climb above the ranks of physical, social, and economic poverty.

It is for this very reason the first sentence of Compassion’s mission statement reads, “In response to the Great Commission…”. You see, children living in this kind of poverty do not have access to the Gospel as we do. They do not have access to beautiful beach-front, boardwalk pavilions (like the one I’ll be sharing from tonight), or gorgeous ocean vistas. It is through child sponsorship that we are able to bring them the Good News of Salvation in Christ Jesus and disciple them in the faith.

Does it Work?

In a word, “Yup.” Last year in fact over 130, 000 children in Compassion programs worldwide made a first time commitment to Jesus Christ—the year before, about 120, 000 made similar commitments. The Compassion ministry works because Jesus Christ is in it and His hands are seen throughout it and we the church, the very body of Christ are His hands.

The Same Appeal

The appeal I am making now is the same appeal that I will be making tonight; “Please sponsor a Compassion child.” Nothing fancy, just the truth…Children living in poverty are dying at an alarming rate; about 30, 000 every single day. You can make a tremendous difference in the life of one child right now and you can do it in Jesus’ name.

And if he knocks out the tooth of his male or female servant, he shall let him go free for the sake

And if he knocks out the tooth of his male or female servant, he shall let him go free for the sake of his tooth...Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. Exodus 21:27 + John 8:36

Hmmm? What to Write About

God has been so gracious this week; my mind has been a flood with things spiritual, a cornucopia of blog-abilities. This morning however, as I sat in Bible study with Pastor Humberto Alfaro, I did not have a specific topic in mind.

“I wonder what blessed-thing the Lord will afford me today, ” I said to myself.

Five Minutes Later

My phone rang—yes, right in the middle of Humberto’s teaching. Fortunately my ring-tone is set to, “When the Saints Come Marching in, ” so apparently no one noticed. I tapped the side of the phone to silence the ringer. Seconds later, it rang again and I re-silenced. I got up and walked outside to see if I recognized the number and it rang again.

“Hmm, ” I thought, “this might not be good.”

“Hi Dave, this is Shana at ‘Rip Tide’.”

Shana is on staff for the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association and she runs the Christian camp over at the Ocean Grove youth temple with her husband Joey. ‘Rip Tide’ is the name given to the group she oversees, the group my daughter is a part of.

“Grace is fine, but she had a little accident. She knocked her tooth out.”

The youth temple is less than 100 feet from where I was, in fact, when I looked over at the building, I could see Shana talking to me on her cell phone.

“I’ll be right there, ” I said.

God’s Hand

Almost immediately I saw God’s hand in the situation as it unfolded before me. Gracie, my daughter, was unruffled by the event. There she stood with a bloody, tissue-wrapped ice cube to her mouth…Quite the little trooper.

Jordan, another staffer, had located the tooth and instinctively placed it in a container of milk. He was in the process of scooting over to his dad’s office—his dad the local dentist, to see if Gracie could be immediately seen. He was back in a flash with a, “We can take her right over”

Taking nothing for granted, I prayed as we walked the two blocks to Doc Wilden’s office. As we walked we were met by Carol Wilden, Doc Wilden’s wife and Jordan’s mom—she had been at Bible study with me when I had gotten the call.

“We prayed for Grace, ” she said.

Doc Wilden took us right in and with in moments was manipulating Grace’s tooth back into the hole in her mouth; no time for Novocain. Grace sat obediently in the chair, not a tear, not a whimper. When the good doctor was finished, he said to me, “Let’s pray together for Grace’s tooth, ” and we did.

Later That Same Day

Joey, Shana’s husband, gave me a call at home and it was such a joy to tell him what a great job the staff had done and how God’s hand was evident throughout all the activities. God’s calming Spirit had fallen on everyone: Grace, me, the OG staff, and yes, even my wife when I called her to tell her about the adventure. Sometimes, I am just so grateful to be a part of God’s family.

El Salvador Flashback

I could not help but recall the testimony of Pastor Humberto from a few days earlier, of when he had visited a desolate church in his native El Salvador. The saints were lining up for prayer to be healed of headaches and stomach-aches because they had no medicines whatsoever…All they had was Jesus Christ.

Why Are We So Blessed?

I do not know for sure. But one thing I do know. Because we are blessed, we are called to be a blessing to others. God is clear about this in His word to us, the Bible. Whether it is spiritual poverty or physical poverty, we are to take the gift and grace we freely received and share it with others when He calls us to do so.

When I consider the events of this day; the free access we have to God and to His abundance, it just further confirms in my soul that my heart and hand need to be continually open to His will. Are you so blessed? Would you please be a blessing to a person in need and become a child’s sponsor?

May God continue to bless us all

Sponsor a child and I will send you a free copy of "Hope Lives: a Journey of Restoration" by Amber Van Schooneveld.

Proverbs 3:5-6; Matthew 7:7

One of the very best things about serving the Lord in His Compassion ministry are the opportunities for fellowship; specifically the exchanges that occur while serving behind a Compassion sign-up table. I had one such encounter the other night.

The table traffic was sluggish when *Judy strolled up. I could tell almost immediately that Judy was one of Ocean Grove’s ‘challenged’ inhabitants. I cannot relate precisely her affliction, but to suffice it to say the more we conversed, the more evident it became she struggled with something cerebral.

“I want to sponsor a child, ” she began, “how much does it cost?”

I explained to her the ministry and how for about one dollar-a-day a sponsorship provides educational opportunities, food, healthcare, and of course, the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Judy listened, interrupted often, and eventually explained how she could not sponsor a child at this time due to her financial situation. Then, the conversation began again.

Groundhog Day

Reminiscent of the classic Bill Murray movie, Judy started again, “I want to sponsor a child, ” and then actually upped the ante by declaring she wanted to sponsor two, or maybe three children.

Judy now finished every sentence with a probing question to me, “What should I do?” and regardless of what I suggested, her response to me was always the same, “what should I do?”

Frustrated But in Love

Have you ever been there? Anyway, “Judy, ” I said, “are you saved?”

“Yes, ” she said with a huge smile on her face!

“Awesome, ” I said, “we need to bring God in on this one. Will you pray and ask God to tell you what you should do?”

I then asked if she was here to listen to Duffy Robbins (the evening’s speaker). She said she was. I told her to go in and find a seat, listen to Duffy’s message and to ask God to give her the answer she desperately needed. She said she would and she walked away to find a seat.

Did I Believe?

Did I believe God would respond to Judy? Did I believe Judy would reach-out for God in prayer? Well all I can tell you is that this was my hope and prayer. Thirty minutes later Judy made her return.

“God Said Wait!”

“What!” I said, “God spoke to you?”

“Yes, ” she told me excitedly, “God said wait!”

“Well praise be to God Judy, ” I replied.

To which she responded, “So what should I do?”

I laughed. She laughed. We laughed together

“I have an idea, ” she said, “I’ll have my cable TV turned off and use that money to sponsor these three children, ” pointing to three child packets on the table.

“Judy, ” I said sternly, but lovingly, “God said wait.”

“But…”

“Judy, we should not disobey God.”

The irony is that usually these conversations are the other way around; God is leading someone to sponsor a child and they are looking for every excuse not to obey—in an extreme contrast, Judy desires to be disobedient to God in order that she might save the lives of three children.

Judy agreed that listening to God was most important, but not before jotting down the names of the three children she hoped to sponsor one day. I saw Judy later that night sitting alone in the park. She called out to remind me, “I have the names written down, I have the names written down!”

And Jesus has your name written down too Judy.

Will You Sponsor a Child?

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8

Gifts

In my Bible study this week (at Ocean Grove, NJ) we have been going over the seven spiritual gifts as summarized in Romans 12. Honestly, it has not been one of my more favorite studies primarily because the presenter started the week off by declaring, “We never want to put God in a box, ” (with which I agree) but then proceeded to put God in a box with each new lesson.

Keeping an Open Mind

It is a rare bird indeed to see the words ‘open-mindedness’ and ‘Compassion dave’ in the same sentence, but be that as it may, I have pried open that door and stuck a rock in it so it would remain (at the very least) ajar. However, one particular point the lecturer continually made; ‘that we have only one gift, ’ I could not grasp, even though he made a very good argument for that being the case.

The Gift of Compassion

Of course I am referring to the ministry itself, and not any of the aforementioned spiritual gifts. I raise the issue because as an advocate and volunteer with the Compassion ministry I have discovered that (quite often) many spiritual gifts are employed and/or drawn upon, either simultaneously or back-to-back. I know they are gifts because naturally, I do not possess the ability to do any of them. I would even venture to say that all seven gifts have been used in conjunction with my (God’s) Compassion ministry at varying times throughout my term with the organization.

The Danger of One

If a believer truly believed they had but one gift, the danger exists that other spiritual gifts, whether permanent or temporary, will be neglected. Maybe, in this present moment, you only have one gift, but it would be a dishonor to the Giver to shut-down any opportunity to exercise another gift because you assumed He would not give you more than one.

Gifts Utilized When Sponsoring a Child

Obviously, if you have been moved to sponsor a Compassion child, and you are doing it with a joyful heart, you possess (at least temporarily) the gift of giving. But you are also a leader, demonstrating by your witness what it is truly like to take a stand for what is right and a stand against what is wrong.

You may also be a prophet, by the declaring of God’s word as a reason to support your giving gesture and also as a reason for others to do so. Your witness and your voice might also make you a teacher of sorts, at least as it pertains to God’s Great Commission and His Great Commandment.

Finally, and it almost goes without mention, that mercy and exhortation are evident and portrayed in the person who sponsors a child, by so doing saves a life both physically and eternally.

Exercising Your Gift(s)

Would you please sponsor a child today? The truth be told, the only thing you truly need is an open hand and a willing heart.

Sponsor a child today and I will send you a free copy of "Hope Lives: a Journey of Restoration" by Amber Van Schooneveld—truly.

I'm going to quote Leonard Sweet (SoulSalsa) because I really can't phrase this better:

There is no more vintage moment steeped in the Ocean Grove tradition than to watch as a couple dozen ushers fan out across the vast amphitheater in their white pants and blue blazers to collect the offering in old-fashioned wicker baskets. When the offertory anthem is finished, they emerge from everywhere and nowhere to waltz back to the front and line up for the offertory prayer while Gordon Turk plays on the great organ the tune of "The Ushers March" [composed by Clarence Kohlmann, O.G. organist from 1924-1945]. it's quaint. It's campy. It's the signature of Ocean Grove. There's only one problem. All the ushers have been, from the opening day of Ocean Grove, male. (There are a couple of services each year when women usher. But these are the exceptions that prove the rule.)

(You remember the Great Auditorium, right? And the inside? Incidentally, that photo I took at last year's choir festival is no longer possible, since there is a new organ taking up the whole balcony behind the sound guys.)

But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. Luke 14:13

One of the best things about where I live is that I am right next door to Ocean Grove. I won’t elaborate (here) why Ocean Grove, NJ is so remarkable, but I do suggest you click on the name (link) to read more about God’s Square Mile.I will tell you this one thing: every morning (in the summer) the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association ensures that there is a (free) quality Bible Study. This morning was no exception and we were additionally blessed by the company of Ken Medema who is leading worship prior to bible hour this week.

No One Gives Without

Was the title of Ken’s first song, ‘A hymn that longs to realize again the dream of the first Christian church that wealth, possessions talents food in short just about everything would be shared so that there is provision for everyone’ (copied from Ken’s website), based on Acts 4:32-37, he sings, "Till all the hungry shall be fed and no one goes without."

But the verse from his musical appeal that messed me up (to the point that I couldn’t focus on the rest of the Bible study offered this morning) was, “We are a living feast.”

Think About That

As a servant of God (by choice), do we think of ourselves as ‘meals’ for someone else—anyone else, to consume? The concept and the image moved me incredibly today. Oh not just in a, “Hey-you-should-sponsor-a-Compassion-child-today” kind of way, but on a much deeper, personal level. I am so grateful that my Father in Heaven cares so much about me to reveal these insights.

But I Do Like to Share

If you haven’t noticed, these bloggings of mine are designed to serve (at least) two purposes. First, as a devotional-type message, the purpose of which is to inspire and/or feed my brothers and sisters in Christ and second, as a ‘place’ to make an appeal for the ‘least of these’, the children living in poverty around the world.

The former (prayerfully) is done. So, regarding those kids…

I saw a peculiar irony in the idea of becoming a ‘meal’ for those who are starving, both physically and spiritually. Might you consider sponsoring one of these children today?

I will send you a free copy of "Hope Lives: a Journey of Restoration" by Amber Van Schooneveld, if you do.

One of the things about New Jersey, and I've likely said this elsewhere on this blog, is that you have pockets abandoned, run down space, even in well to do areas. This old pool, for example, is in Ocean Grove. To be fair, however, it's in the corner nearest the Asbury Park boardwalk.

ME: So how was those first couple of meetings, Mr. District Leader?

DAD: I've never seen so much ass kissing in my life.

ME: Really? Even more than DODDS? (Note: DODDS = Department of Defense Dependent Schools)

DAD: Absolutely not. I was too busy eating.

Me: What?

DAD: The spread was fantastic. I made sure I told everybody that, [violently waves hands for emphasis] "THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY DOES A GOOD FEEDBAG!!!"

Me: You said that, that loudly, that way?

DAD: Oh, to everybody that would listen. I was grateful.

Me: It couldn't have been that good.

DAD: You don't understand. They had periogies with good smoked kielbasa. They had fried chicken and wings. A bunch of diverse latino foods, and so much more; it was multi-ethnic buffet. I mean isn't that what the Democratic party is about?

Me: Eating?

DAD: No, eating so many different ethnic varieties all within one catered event. You know, so many different people together all at once.

Me: Did you actually do anything?

DAD: Listened to some boring speeches, that's about it. Oh, and, as before, I watched a bunch of people flatter each other tremendously.

Special thanks to everyone who bothered to read and comment on my posts while I was gone. I felt loved when I came back. (If I were the type to gauge how loved I am by the number of comments left. Which I'm totally not. *cough* )

But this is someone enjoying a novel on the Ocean Grove beach. :)

Happy 232nd Birthday United States of America !!!

Take a moment and reflect how lucky we are to have such a great country to live in. The best part about living here is if you don't like it you can change it. So quit complaining, VOTE, be active in your community and if you see a military person, thank them for their service. This week fireworks are the central story. I have done the best possible job tracking down where fire works are but some area either wont update their sites or return emails. My personal suggestion is to go to Wildwood. If you miss the 4th of July Fireworks, you can catch a encore every Friday evening at the boardwalk in Wildwood.

One last thing, Please have a SAFE 4th of July and leave the fireworks to the professionals, explosives aren't a joke...just ask "Lefty".

I'm probably ripping off John Maslowski, but y'know, he's not the only person who can photograph the underside of a pier. Take that.

I live maybe 2 miles--as the crow flies--from the Jersey shore, and it takes about 20 minutes to drive to Ocean Grove, which is a little further south. (About 8 of those minutes are spent toodling along at 25-30 MPH 'cos that's the speed limit in touristy areas, and there are speed traps set up all over the place). So really, I ought to feature the beach more often.

Not that I will, but I should.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (June 10, 2008) - Record high gas prices don't have to keep you from having a great vacation this summer. Putting those two facts together, the following is a list of 20 fun-filled getaways that are just a single fill-up away to spend the day or stay overnight at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Here's what happened. My mom and dad went to go vote in New Jersey Senatorial primary -- for Frank Lautenberg, I assume. After studying the sample ballot, walks into the booth, and for giggles, writes his name in under a vacant, uncontested "District Leader" slot. He has his chuckle, and then moves on and forgets about it. A few days ago, he got a bunch of letters from Neptune Township, one which reads:

"Dear Paul Ristow: First, let me offer my congratulations on your recent electoral victory ...."

So yes. One vote matters.

We recently had a client that had just bought a house near Princeton, NJ. Our technicians arrived

We recently had a client that had just bought a house near Princeton, NJ. Our technicians arrived on time and started going through the normal routine of looking at the floors so that the techs could estimate the end result when we had completed the service. The first response from the homeowner was "you do sand the floors, right?". When we explained that we do not sand the floors the homeowner became visibly upset. We explained the service and spent some time to go through everything in detail and after an in depth discussion with her husband they gave us the go ahead to refinish the floors. The end result was that the homeowners were very happy with the result. The wife even brought family members to the house towards the end of the refinishing process to show off her beautiful refinished floors. Some people are skeptical of what we do because we don't sand but we can still get great results on many different types of floors.

Another client closed on their house on Monday afternoon and we were there at 7am the next morning to refinish the floors so that the furniture could be moved in that night. Once again the homeowner thought we sanded the floors. She decided that she really wanted to sand the floors. That lasted about 10 minutes when she found out that it takes multiple days to sand and refinish, not to mention the fact that a lot of her furniture wouldn't be able to go on the floor for a few days after that and that the residual smell would drive her crazy for quite a few weeks as well. The end result was that she decided to go ahead with the Mr Sandless Wood Floor Refinishing service and was very happy with the results. The furniture was moved in the next day and all was good with the world :)

This particular one was seen over Fletcher Lake, about 16 feet from the boardwalk between Ocean Grove and Bradley Beach.
