Misschien heb je wel eens gemerkt dat het heel vreemd voelt om de hoorn van de telefoon opeens aan je andere oor te houden. Maar goed, het is lastiger om daar conclusies uit te trekken omdat je hele houding dan verandert.

Luister eens naar muziek terwijl je letterlijk op een oor gaat liggen. Observeer hoe het geluid binnenkomt via je linkeroor en via je rechteroor. Is er verschil in de waarneming, in de ervaring die je hebt?

Saint Odhran, sometimes written Odran, was a 5th century companion of St. Patrick, and helped bring Christianity to Ireland.  Legend has it that he drove Patrick's chariot - and died at the helm during a pagan ambush.  About a century later, another Saint Odhran, or Otteran or Oran, accompanied Saint Columba to Scotland and helped establish his monastery.  The "d" in Odhran is silent, so even the old school spelling leads to a reasonably familiar pronunciation: O rahn, not so far from today's OR en.

When a name has been around for more than a millennium, landing on the most common spelling can be tricky.  Beyond Odhran, Odran and Otteran variants include:

• Orrin, familiar to many as the name of long-serving Utah senator Orrin Hatch;
• Oran, an early Anglicization of the name;
• Orin, worn by Orin Smith, former CEO of Starbucks and the motorcycle-driving dentist Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors;
• Oren, which is, strictly speaking, a completely separate name.

While they're not common, we find a scattering of Orrans and Orrens, too. 

Most forms of the name trace back to the Gaelic word odhra, for pale green.  Adding the diminutive "an" ending is common in Irish male personal names - think Aidan and Ronan.  Spelled Oren, it's a Hebrew name that means pine tree - not so far away from green, actually.  

There are a few claims that link to the Greek Orestes, a mythological name meaning "of the mountains."  Some sites even list it as a variant of Aaron, but that seems tortured.

Chances are that all the versions have mixed and mingled over the years; the only Oren we've ever met had a decidedly Irish surname.  They've fared similarly in terms of late 19th/early 20th century popularity in the US.  Orrin was steadily ranked until 1947, and disappeared entirely after 1961; Oren was gone after 1953; Orin after 1951 and Oran after 1949.

This makes Orrin a problematic name:  while it ought to be simple and straightforward, it is almost impossible to land on the correct spelling.  It can be taken as an authentic Irish heritage choice, or perhaps a subtle nature moniker.

For parents weary of hearing Connor and Ryan, but seeking a Gaelic-tinged appellation, Oran might be the best spelling.  As of 2006, he was a Top 100 choice in Northern Ireland and records suggest this was the original Anglicization.  Oran is #72; Odhran actually comes in at #39, but in the US, that would lead to pronunciation headaches.

If your heritage is Scottish, Orrin is the name of a river flowing into the North Sea.  Because Senator Hatch is a well-known Mormon, it might also be taken by some as reflecting that particular religious affiliation.  And, of course, if you're Jewish, Oren presents himself as the most likely choice.

But they all lead off with that ever-so-fashionable vowel O, and will meet many parents' desire for something different, but not too sharply removed from current favorites for boys.

Het linkeroor blijkt gevoeliger voor lieve woordjes dan het rechteroor. Personen die hun geliefde op Valentijnsdag iets willen toefluisteren, doen dat dus beter in het linkeroor, meldde de Britse krant Daily Telegraph maandag.
De krant baseert zich op een onderzoek door een Amerikaanse universiteit. De wetenschappers vermoeden dat er verschil is omdat het linkeroor wordt gecontroleerd door de rechterhelft van de hersenen, de zogenoemde emotionele kant.
De deskundigen lieten honderd proefpersonen via de koptelefoon afwisselend in beide oren 'emotionele' en neutrale woorden horen. De ondervraagden bleken via hun linkeroor meer emotionele woorden te onthouden dan via hun rechteroor.

Nee, mijn Googlezoektocht leidt alleen maar naar pseudo-romantische onzin. Ik bespaar jullie de tientallen kleffe gedichtjes die ik onderweg nog tegenkwam, kwestie van uw laatste maaltijd veilig te laten zitten waar ie nu zit. En van dat "wetenschappelijk onderzoek" geloof ik ook geen sikkepit, waar halen ze dat nu weer?

Last Saturday, I started a lil' survey on F.A.A.Qs(Frequently Asked Annoying Questions) and tagged a few people to see what are the most top annoying questions that has been asked to them. Some answered with sarcasm, some with witty remarks, some with even annoying answer! And today after a week, I've gathered the data and would like to present you the results.

And the No. 1 Annoying Question is?

“Bila nak kahwin?(When are you getting married?)”

Here's a breakdown of the survey:
• Out of 7, 6 people have been asked when they will tie the knot (85%)
• 5 have the read-between-the-lines-you're-fat remarks(2 from the same person!) (71%)
• 2 have been asked to join an MLM business (28%)

'Worth Mentioning Annoying Question' is from Crafty Hands, which is; Asal mana? Or Kampung mana?(Where are you from?/Where is your hometown?)

What do I make out of this little experiment? No. 1) People are obsessed with other people's commitment or love life, whether to embrace or rejoice the other's relationship, or just being busy body, No. 2) People are attracted to other people's physical appearance, good or bad, whether to show concern of other's health/diet, or just wanna feel good about themselves and No. 3) People craved for financial freedom, whether to help other's in need or just cashing in the quick buck off other's effort for themselves.

Are people only concerned about these? Or does this justify the saying about life being all about love, food and money? Yes? No? What do you think?

The problem I found was I had to constantly change back & forth between the command line & VS to update the code. To solve this i borrowed a trick from SubSonic. I have created a little button in VS (see below) which will run the query complier for you.

To do this, firstly download the latest version of NQG, then copy the exe file NHQG.exe to an safe location e.g. "c:\Program Files\NHibernate\". Next you need to open up visual studio, and click Tools -> External Tools and then click add. Give whatever name you want e.g. NHibernate, and then for the command the location of NHQG.exe, in my case "c:\Program Files\NHibernate\NHQG.exe". In the arguments field, you have a few choices:

• /Lang: language used, either cs | vb
• /InputFilePattern: location of either Nhibernate mapping file or the dll (if your using Castle Projects ActiveRecord)
• /OutputDirectory: Directory you want the files to go to e.g. ./Models/Queries
• /BaseNamespace: Base namspace for queries, e.g. Priority.Queries

so a complete example would look like "/Lang:cs /InputFilePattern:bin/Priority.dll /OutputDirectory:Models/Queries /BaseNamespace:Priority.Queries"

For Inital directory you just add $(ProjectDir) which sets the starting location to be the root of the project directory. Finally, make sure that it is the first in the menu (it will become clear why in a second).

Once you click ok, you will now be able to run the application by clicking on Tools -> NHibernate. To create a button for this, you need to click Tools -> Customize -> Toolbars & then click new, a new menu should appear. Next you need to switch back to Commands, Select Tools and the scroll down until you see all the External Command x's. Drag External Command 1 onto your new toolbar and then click close. It should change the text from External Command 1 to NHibernate (or whatever name you gave it) and your done!

I came upon this interesting article on Wired today about a new subgenre of hip-hop called 'Nerdcore'. Coined by Damian Hess aka MC Frontalot from San Francisco, nerdcore is about rapping about, you might have guessed it, nerd stuff. From math, coding skills, to Star Wars and Mozilla Firefox plugins! This scope of topics are indeed refreshing and welcoming(to me at least) giving hip-hop abit of fresh air from the sell out mainstream topics of blings, gangsta and girls.

Damian started rapping 9 years ago and came up with the term after performing in front of his Boba Fett action figures. It's geeky alright, and people might laugh, but today he's been touring The States and made appearances at many video game, anime, music and film conventions, There's also a documentary made about him and the movement called Nerdcore Rising: The Movie taken from the title of his 2005 debut album. Noam Chomsky, the famous MIT linguistics professor even quoted saying this about Damian;

"Never has a little boy sat so alone at his computer and busted out such in- conceivably thick rhymes. MC Frontalot has tapped the zeitgeist. It is with good reason that he is so very famous and rich."

Nerds indeed have the last laughs. Look at Bill Gates!
