I love Google Earth and Earthscape is basically Google Earth for your iPod Touch. You can zoom all around the globe using pinch gestures to go in for a closer look. As you can see in the first pic below you start off in the 'out in space' view of the entire plant. You can spin the globe around with simple swipes of the finger, double touch to zoom in closer or you use the standard pinch gestures to zoom in and out. As with web pages and photos this works extremely well and is pretty fun to do. Eaethscape doesn't have all the features of the full blown google earth but you get more than enough to make this a worthwhile purchase. You can see borders and place names, wikipedia entries and even photos that have been uploaded to flickr providing you with plenty to read and look at on your travels around the globe.

When zooming around you can change the camera from the default top down view to the much prettier 'look around' mode that you can see in the second image below. And yes, your eyes don't deceive you, the terrain is in full 3D!! That third image is somehere in amongst the Himalayen range. Seeing this in motion is of course much more impressive than any still image can convey.

Those are the pros but there are some cons. First of all is the screamingly obvious lack of a search function? How hard could this be to impliment? Also it's a little sluggish and takes a while to drawn in the detail when you zoom in for a closer look but like it's big brother, google earth, it draws it in progressive stages so you're never left looking at a blank screen, just a blurry one. Unfortunately, on a related note, they don't have the rights for high resolution imagery for anywhere other than the United States although this is supposed to be fourth coming in a future release. It's also a bit crashy and doesn't seem to remember your settings between sessions but again I'm sure that will improve with later versions.

All in all I don't think any of these short comings take much away from the overall experience. Earthscape gives you the whole world in your hands and that is pretty damn cool!

Wurdle, wurdle, wurdle?! The app that's almost cost me my life?!? How did I ever think it was safe to play this game whole walking down the street?!? Needless to say it's sometimes the simple things that prove to be the best things. Wurdle is just boggle on your touch. Try and find as many words as you can, in the short time you are given, by running your finger across adjoining letters in the grid. Simple. Addictive. Wurdle has online worldwide leader boards that are almost impossible to get onto but still you live in hope of one day maybe seeing your name up there. But don't hold your breath?! There's clearly people out there that are dictionary eating androids on speed?!? :-)

First they were sat between the paid and organic search results, then we saw a shift down the page round positions 3/4 of the organic results.

However, this morning they seem to be back at number one with a couple of revisions

1. Font seems at least a point size bigger (and no my settings on the machine have not been changed)
2. Line Spacing between results is bigger

DHAKA, Bangladesh, October 1 (Compass Direct News) – Police have submitted a charge sheet to a district court accusing two persons of raping a pastor’s daughter in the village of Laksmipur, said a state prosecutor.

Sayed Tariqul Islam told Compass that police submitted the charge sheet on Sept. 7 based on an extensive investigation following a DNA test that turned out positive. Pastor Motilal Das, who has long received threats from villagers upset with his success as an evangelist, said that local residents gang-raped his 13-year-old daughter in an attempt to drive him from the area.

State prosecutor Islam said Shakil Ahmed Shebul and Dulal Miah are charged with raping Elina Das at 3 a.m. on May 2. If convicted, they will receive life terms in prison, he said.

“The DNA report is everything to prove them guilty, and I expect that they will be punished with life-term imprisonment,” said Islam.

Previously a medical college had submitted a false forensic test report indicating no evidence of sexual assault. Villagers in Laksmipur, in Fulbaria sub-district 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Dhaka, believe relatives of the accused men paid off the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Forensic Department to fabricate the false test results.

Pastor Das has said relatives of the alleged rapists have offered him a large sum of money to withdraw the case or settle out of court – while continuing to threaten him. He had found his daughter lying unconscious in front of his house early in the morning of May 2, he said, after five men from Mymensingh district raped her.

The charge sheet submitted by police and the positive DNA report state that the girl’s clothes were torn and marked with the semen of Shebul. A close neighbor of Pastor Das, Shebul applied for bail on Tuesday (Sept. 29), but the court refused to grant it, said Islam.

Miah remains at large. Local police inspector Tarapod Shikder told Compass that assiduous efforts were underway to arrest him.

Pastor Das told Compass that he was dismayed that the charge sheet did not require Shebul to be taken on remand by police for interrogation.

“If the arrested person was held on remand for interrogation, police would get more information regarding other rapists,” Pastor Das.

Inspector Shikder told him that police had already taken Shebul on remand for interrogation and obtained little information, Pastor Das said.

“Nonetheless,” Pastor Das said, “the charge sheet will help to heal the scars of my grief-stricken daughter if proper justice is done.”

Upset Neighbors

Defending the initial false DNA report, Forensic Department head Akhteruzzaman Talukder of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital had told Compass that he did not find any gang-rape injury or trace of forced sexual activity.

Pastor Das’s daughter “might have had a love affair with someone in the village,” Talukder said. “Her lover might have been guarded there by his several friends. When the family members came to know the incident, they cooked it up as gang rape.”

Pastor Das and Muslim villagers were extremely upset by the initial forensic report. He subsequently had his daughter’s clothes tested for DNA profiling at the National Forensic DNA Profiling Laboratory of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

His Muslim neighbors, he said, consider the positive DNA test a ray of hope for proper judgment. Pastor Das acknowledged his gratitude to some of the village neighbors who gave him moral support during that time.

“I cannot express my gratitude in words to some of my Muslim neighbors in the village who gave me courage and moral support to go forward when I got the false forensic report from Mymensingh Medical College,” he said.

When Pastor Das initially went to police to file charges, he said, police were reluctant to register the case.

“Police told me that it was a false case,” he said. “They also said that it was a fabricated drama. Police spoke with my daughter in filthy language and showed prurient interest in the details of the incident in front of us rather than filing the case quickly.”

The U.S. Department of State’s 2008 International Religious Freedom Report, released in Sept. 19, notes that Bangladeshi government officials, “including the police, were often ineffective in upholding law and order and were sometimes slow to assist religious minority victims of harassment and violence.”

The day of the alleged rape, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom announced annual recommendations for countries to be designated “Countries of Particular Concern,” but it did not include Bangladesh.

Rather, the commission put Bangladesh on its “Watch List” due to the nature and extent of violations of religious freedom engaged in or tolerated by the government. Other countries on the Watch List are Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia and Nigeria.

According to USCIRF, Islamist radicalism and violence, the threat of serious violence and continued discrimination against members of religious minority communities remain significant concerns in Bangladesh.

A little context from the blogger most obsessed with putting to rest wild conspiracy theories with a simple request for a candidate's records:

So let's have them. And then we can move on.

This seems persuasive to me. But it's based entirely on a vague verbal statement. Why not kill this rumor with Palin's medical records? A 43 year old woman's pregnancy with a Downs Syndrome child would have been intensely monitored, and the records must be a mile long. Just release them, ok? If necessary in a closed room for reporters, just as with McCain. And we can all breathe a sigh of relief and move on.

UPDATE: The American Spectator resports on why Obama may have trouble with that fishy $200 million dollars in contributions:

An auditor for the Federal Election Commission is attempting to have his bosses seek a formal investigation into the collection by the Obama for President campaign of more than $200 million in potentially illegal political donations, including millions of dollars of illegal, foreign donations, and has sought a request for assistance from the Department of Justice or Federal Bureau of Investigation. But the analyst's requests have largely been ignored. "I can't get anyone to move. I believe we are looking at a hijacking of our political system that makes the Clinton and Gore fundraising scandals pale in comparison. And no one here wants to touch it."

The Obama campaign has already had to deal with several FEC complaints about fraudulent donors and illegal foreign contributions, and the FEC says it has no record that those complaints have been resolved or closed. As well, the Obama campaign has been cagey at times about the means by which it has made its historic fundraising hauls, which now total almost $500 million for the election cycle. The Hillary Clinton campaign raised questions about the huge amount of e-retail sales the Obama campaign was making for such things as t-shirts and other campaign paraphernalia, and how such sales were being tracked and used for fundraising purposes. While the profits of those items counted against the $2,300 personal donation limit, there have always been lingering questions about the e-retail system.

So there was Jermaine O'Neal yesterday, speaking of "getting killed in taxes" since he transplanted his family from Indianapolis to a condo rental in Yorkville.

Was that Bryan Colangelo, the Raptors general manager who has made it an organizational tenet to recruit European players who are more amenable to Canada's un-American-ness, racing across the room to put out the franchise-torching fire emanating from the mouth of another reluctant visitor to our home and native land?

Actually, no.

Colangelo's spin wasn't necessary, because O'Neal's thrust wasn't negative.

"I'll take the tax situation (in Canada) all day long," said O'Neal, 29. "I've saved a helluva lot of money and we've made a helluva lot of great business decisions, so it's not about that. It's about a team taking a chance on a player that's coming off a (knee) injury."

It's not about money for Toronto's highest paid player? And taxes are no big deal? Training camp doesn't begin until this morning's first workout in Ottawa, and already this season has the feeling of some bizarre alternate universe.

How else do you explain Raptors coach Sam Mitchell giving up cursing in an offseason priority shift that also has seen him swear off pork while he reconsiders the merits of everything from organized religion to occasional vices such as booze and cigars?

And how else do you explain Colangelo, builder of the seven-seconds-or-less Phoenix Suns, speaking yesterday about Toronto's intention to play a "grind-it-out halfcourt style" for at least parts of this season?

Slow is the new fast in Raptorland. Defence, O'Neal's strength and the side of the ball that has Colangelo all giddy, is the new offence.

Is hard, too, the new soft? (Andrea Bargnani, the Italian 7-footer who appears to have suddenly discovered the merits of the weight room, was said to have spent the offseason showing off his newly honed biceps in tank tops). Can last year's weakness – team chemistry – really be its alleged new strength?

Yesterday, O'Neal and Chris Bosh, the all-star Olympic gold medallist, walked together with a purpose: "The best friends got to get their picture taken," said Bosh.

Their happy coexistence is vital, of course. And so, too, as ridiculous as it sounds to the common folk, is O'Neal's acceptance of the tax hit, which, depending on whose accountant you consult, is either real or imagined. According to Deddrick Faison, O'Neal's business manager, the player will see a decrease in take-home pay approaching $1 million (U.S.) on his salary of about $21 million, all because he is a Raptor. Not that the money matters to a man who has earned about $110 million the previous 12 seasons.

"He's happy here and, in the end, how much money can you spend?" said Faison.

In the NBA we used to know, the answer to that question was: All of it and more! In the netherworld in which the Raptors now reside, the concerns are more altruistic?

Money can't buy victory, after all.

But in the best locker rooms, the prospect of victory is a currency.

"The window is getting like this for me," O'Neal said, and he squeezed his fingers together to signify the crack through which he'll continue his search for a championship.
