Yesterday (Thursday) was another good day at mLearn 2008.

I really enjoyed Jon Trinder’s session on chasing mobile technology. Though he apologised for the negativity but did raise the question of institutional barriers to the implementation of mobile learning.

There are some key points here, even if you are implementing mobile learning, how are you testing, is it just technical testing, or do you undertake usability testing with actual real life users.

Andy Ramsden’s session on Twitter was also fast paced, amusing and interesting. Out of the audience about half had Twitter accounts, but only a few were actively using it. We didn’t really get a chance to elicit reasons why they weren’t using.

Mick Mullane’s session on podcasting was similar to ones I had seen before, but was nice to view again in a very academic conference. He was very enthusiastic about podcasting, just a pity that he couldn’t do his live demo as there was no free wifi!

The reason I was in Mick’s session was that I was in the room for John Cook’s session on the appropriation of learners’ devices for learning. Which was a nice theoretical model which is akin to my views about using the learners’ own devices.

Being a Creative Brand Management advocate, I consider myself to be a very keen Interactive Marketin

Being a Creative Brand Management advocate, I consider myself to be a very keen Interactive Marketing enthusiast. Like everyone out there, I am worried about the current economic crisis our world has bumped into. Back home, people who do not understand that 'A' of Advertising tell me that "you are doomed, recession is here and advertising is going to be the worst hit sector." Even though I want to believe that, my optimistic nature replies back with a smile. Not that I am not current of huge budget cuts and stuff that corporate sector has to undertake in order to sustain in this crisis. But I am sure this is a temporary scenario & we will bounce back... with a bang!

As a graduate student about to enter the world of Advertising, I am bound to be affected to see news like this...

but things like this rejuvenates my optimism...

I was concerned, but definitely optimistic about our industry. However,my main reason to write this post...

I am happy to stumble upon the survey below and just wanted to share my happiness through this little piece of information.

"marketers will increase or at least maintain their spends on interactive marketing"

I understand, this survey was conducted by New York Times in May, 2008 & since then our situation has only accelerated downwards. But with recession in sight, I am sure Interactive is the best medium (for optimal utilization of resources) to connect & engage with the consumer.

“Tell me and I will forget, Show me and I will remember,

Involve me and I will understand!”

-Confucius

Today has been a great day… well… a god day but one great thing did happen: POWcast has seen its debut!

As you (may or may not) know, I am a teacher and in the school where I work, on the Thursday afternoon we run activities instead of teaching lessons, for the last 3 years I was doing some cooking with the 6 formers but this year I have started a podcasting activity and today our first podcast POWcast )People Of Warwick cast was aired for the very first time…

As you may read between the lines I am very excited about this, it has been a labour of love and I have worked with 4 great kids aged between 14 and 17 years old. If you are so inclined go and check it out by clicking here! Then let me know what you think and how we could improve it.

Podcasting has brought about a very intriguing element to my editing process. Yes, I understand that

Podcasting has brought about a very intriguing element to my editing process. Yes, I understand that not every chapter I read aloud is picture-perfect; occasionally I read a phrase, grimace through it, and keep going. I don't have an official editor, and I know the magic they can perform on a novel. My biggest goal is just to tell the story, and tell the story right.

But what's been really intriguing for me is not actually doing the readings, but listening to my own stuff afterward. I always listen to the podcast before I upload it and let it go live, and it has to pass my own test first. #9 was great--I really felt it moved well, was paced well, and entertaining.

That said, I've been working on a chapter that, until a few days ago, I thought was solid. I thought the pacing was good, the action exciting, the dialogue and secrets and mysteries engaging.

Then I listened to it.

And now, I'm not sure the chapter even needs to be there at all.

Or at least, part of me says that. The other part of me says, "Finish the damned edit, and then look back." But that's the problem: I've got to read this chapter for the podcast. What happens is important, though it could (honestly) be relegated to a short flashback/paragraph of explanation. So do I fix it now, and read the next chapter (one of the benefits of writing a multi-POV is that I can mess with chapter order if I want to)? Or, do I read it as is, with the caveat that it's likely not going to appear in the final version? But do I risk the readers/listeners losing track of the POV, Cora's, by having the story told in another POV (which will happen, if I do it the other way)... or... baaaah.

Fecked if I know, as Sir Din might say.

Suffice it to say Podcast #10 might take a little longer than anticipated to get to your ears. I'm working on it. I'm honestly leaning toward leaving it be, at the moment, and letting people decide. As I head into the center of the book, my standards are getting a lot more strict, I suppose.

Din lowered her voice, “You’ve got to understand me, Brickley,” she said. “These men and women—they are mine. I have shaped them, I have trained them. One loose cog in the mechanism, and people die. We all go through hardships—we all lose people, and feel our hearts squeezed to the point of despair over it. But we move on. We have to. Because we are the Order of the Asp—and by gods, if we don’t do our job, no one else will. And the world would be a much darker place.”

I’ve been listening to podcasts for awhile now, about 3 years. I started when I got my first

I've been listening to podcasts for awhile now, about 3 years. I started when I got my first iPod and loaded that thing up because I was flying to Hawaii. I don't remember what I was listening to back then, but I'm pretty sure I just filled up on lots of NPR and other news podcasts that were just recordings of whatever had been aired earlier in the day.

The first podcast I started subscribing to regularly was the "Diggnation" podcast hosted by Kevin Rose, one of the founders of Digg.com, and Alex Albrecht. It started out as purely audio but has been video for a long time now. The podcast would countdown the top dugg stories from the past week. I stopped subscribing to that at least a year ago after I stopped enjoying Digg. That podcast though has been wildly successful and they get a lot of sponsorship money and have done live shows from aroun the world supported by a global fanbase. Diggnation is one of the flagship shows on the Revision3 internet TV/podcast network.

These days I have a list of 15 podcasts that I subscribe through using iTunes. I don't regularly listen to them all, but I like to fall asleep with something playing in the background, so I like to have choices.

My Podcasts (* means I listen regularly):

Ask a Ninja

Bad Science

Downloadable Content (Penny Arcade)

iFanboy video podcast

iFanboy "Pick of the Week" podcast*

Internet Superstar *

Keith and the Girl*

KATGtv

New Yorker: Fiction

NPR: All Songs Considered

NPR: Fresh Air *

NPR: Pop Culture

NPR: Technology

The Skeptics Guide to the Universe *

Tiki Bar TV

I don't see podcasting as that much of a different media than radio, other than the live vs. recorded aspect, and it's kind of replaced radio for me. It's radio on my schedule, when I have the time.

As for uses involving learning, I think if implemented correctly it could be a great learning tool. The only problem is that I don't know if listening to a professor speak is only to hold too many people's attention. A lot of the classes I've had where a podcast might have been a helpful means of expanding learning the professor is usually completley monotone. It might be a good thing for professors to collaborate on with students, teaching assistants at the least. I think a good approach might be to have students vote, either in class by way of the clickers or online, as to a few topics they would like to be covered more in-depth on the podcasts, this could be weekly or just before big tests.

I think the same thing could be done with YouTube videos, professors could create profiles and students could subscribe to them. This might be easier than podcasting for some.

Podcasting works in the same way like RSS with the only exception that through RSS subsription you can get regular updated information at your computer while through podcasting you can get updated audio files regularly on your MP3 players, computers or devices such as ipod.

The bloggers and Publishers can have an exciting experience to share the latest audio files with their subscribers so that they can be updated whenever any audio file is recreated or edited.

Looking for a new way to spread the word about your business or service? Look no further than your iPod.

If you have an iPod (isn’t that a requirement for living in the USA?), you have iTunes.

There’s a button for “Podcasts,” which are audio programs. Like radio shows without the radio.

I download podcasts every time I plug in my iPod. It’s a free and legal service provided by Apple.

One of my favorites is the screenwriting podcast “On The Page,” hosted by Pilar Alessandra. As an educational and motivational resource, On The Page is nearly as good as having your personal writing cheerleader. (Note: If actual cheerleaders would like to cheer for me, please send photos.)

On the podcast, Pilar would talk about her Los Angeles screenwriting classes. These sounded great, but could be a long drive for me, since I live in New Jersey.

Then…she announced a New York class. And with the speed of Mercury and the riches of Midas, I sent her $125.

I sent my money because the podcast actually proved that Pilar knew how to teach screenwriting. Think about it. I sent a total stranger $125 over the Internet. Because I listened to her podcast every week, Pilar was not really a stranger. Her podcast proved that she was what she claimed: A professional who taught the craft and business of screenwriting.

For Pilar Alessandra’s screenwriting classes, podcasting turned out to be an effective marketing tool.

Is something you're doing worth talking about? Consider speaking about your brand message through a podcast.

My name is shimmmergirl and I'm a Marantzaholic. I've been podcasting for two years now. And I'm yet to find a recording device I love as much as the Marantz PMD660 solid state recorder http://www.d-mpro.com/users/folder.asp?FolderID=3629

There are tinier, funkier models out there, but they drive me crazy. I was using a client's Edirol recently, and we just there for hours trying to figure out the jog wheel, the audio levels and the inputs.

Now, I'm as shallow as the next girl, and I must confess I love the way the Zoom and the Edirol look. They're like tiny plastic silver coloured sputniks. Lots of bling, lots of mesh, lots of tiny, tiny buttons.

In comparison, the Marantz PMD660 is a big clunker. It's a black box. No way around it. But it is so easy to use. It works like an old fashioned tape recorder. You remember those? Play. Stop. Record. It records onto a flash card which downloads onto your computer in perfect wav or mp3 format. Done. Is it heavy? Well if you can carry a small lunch box, you can cope with the Marantz. It's surprisingly light for its size.

For my money, it's the only journalistic recorder. It has a three pronged microphone jack at the back, which allows you to plug into splitter boxes at press conferences. Most of the others don't have this, which poses all kinds of problems at high level media conferences.

A word of caution though. Do read the manual. You need to get your input settings right. I swear I had everything on internal microphone for about a year. Actually, the internal mic is great, but it's worth getting a good Rode microphone or something similar.

I've got a lot of clients who are being advised badly about recording audio. They're buying second rate equipment and getting third rate sound.

The Marantz is selling for under $1,000 at the moment. It's worth the investment.

I know these are fighting words. My friend and multimedia guru, Ross Monaghan http://www.themediapod.net/swears by the Edirol. But Ross, I would point out it ran out of battery power half way through a panel discussion I was part of at Frocomm's New Media Summit in Melbourne last month http://www.frocomm.com.au/prnm2008_melb/program.php.

And now it's time to put my money where my mouth is. I have been missing my Marantz. It actually wasn't mine, it belonged to my previous employer, CSIRO. And now it's time for my own.

Finally I managed to released the first episode of the WizzHack Podcast. For a while I had been thinking about making a podcast for WizzHack, but didnt know when to start, and time is never on myside. Well tonight I was off from work and college, I decided to do it!

Me and a friend (Brian Johnson) recorded the first WizzHack Podcast. Either click the image above to listen to it or click here! Recording took about 45minutes but editing took about 2 - 3 hours. I'm sure it will get faster over time.

Please leave feedback :) . Its going to be a weekly podcast about technology.

I have also set-up http://podcast.wizzhack.co.uk, which will re-direct to the different WizzHack Episodes (currently only one).
