yeah, well, the title more or less says it all on several of them level thingys. i went to the local car wash yesterday to get my new ride washed. i needed to lay it's first hand wax down on it's lovely new skin. yeah, i lay it on by hand. myself. no bleeding buffers. no bullshit. all elbow grease. i can still do it on numerous levels. um, yeah.

none the less, the new short looks like a sparkling diamond. i'll lay another hand wax on it within a forte night. that should get me thru the winter. yeah, baby, your ride gets the same treatment as well. fear not.

so like i'm at the car wash. they are taking their sweet time getting my ride inside and washed. it's still new so i needed to stand by the back door and make sure nobody stole the fucker. right? if they do, i need at least be able to tell the cops what the piece of crap looked like that stole the my ride. right? sure. so i'd been there a bit and i noticed this cd sitting on the bulletin board thingy. mostly bidness cards but there's this cd sitting there.

of course i pick it up. hmmm, the eleventh hour band. ok. fine. a bunch of white guys. i figure it for punk stuff or maybe even jesus rock. yeah, well. like i ain't looking a gift horse in the mouth. i took it home with me.

yeah, i was a bit worried about playing the damn thing. i mean i found it at the local car wash, for christ's sake. just sitting there. no real idea just as what the hell it was or what was going on. should i play it on the computer? or stick in the system in the living room? or maybe the boom box in the master bedroom? first play was on the living room system. it's on the computer now. kickin' ass!!!

yeah, it's good. damn good. punk. cum mariachi like zappa like horn stuff. cum speed metal. cum rock 'n' roll. amazing shit. speed mariachi as well. cum snippets of reggae. i love the fucker. good shit. total socal to the vida, dudes. an amazing marketing idea, gentlemen.

'so like maybe we should get somebody to market the cd.'

'fuck no. we just stick it up at the local car wash and leave it to the rock 'n' roll gods. see, they gonna find us somebody who likes it.'

dudes, it worked. i found it and i love it.

the eleventh hour band -- tom farrar, bass. david shinn, sax. justin henry, drums. sanjay menon, trumpet & lead vocals. andy carlson, guitar. i don't know these guys from adam.

ok. so the cd kicks it. pure and simple. gentlemen, the only trouble i have with the whole bizarre deal is your name. yeah, jars of clay, 'eleventh hour'. plus a bag load of other bands on myspace and elsewhere with the same name. ok. then there's like the speed mariachi punk thing going for you guys which is just amazing. fuck, dudes. amazing. i'm playin' this one. a lot. like in the car soon as well. loud.

drifting here. i'm just an old rock 'n' roll douche bag with some sorta vague rock 'n' roll credentials. you guys rock. pure and simple. a name change might be in the offing though. like ok. you are better than any other band of the same name i listened to today. and there's a number of them. but you guys rock way by the fuck far. pussy crappy stuff was what the other bands of the same name were kicking out. so sue me. but you guys are the real deal.

if you guys want the name you are gonna have to rock for it. you damn sure do that. all i can do is write this and say go for it. god speed, dudes. you rock.

this stuff comes from off the cd itself. the eleventh hour band -- show info 213 396-****, 909 449-****. booking info 213 400-****. then of course, none of those numbers are in service. their email address comes back as bogus as well. a bad joke? the band already gone where bands go that just don't quite make it? some poor fan leaving a copy of their one and only cd at the car wash as a sorta shrine to the band? i've no idea. it's sad, dudes, there was something there. just to bad nobody else realized it.

even with all that bad juju going for it, the next time you guys play a public venue let me know. if we ain't booked, the brown eyed girl and i are there. yeah, you're that good. ok, with the caveat, i need to see an ad for the show in a newspaper or something first.

Growing up, as long as I can remember, music has been a huge part of my life. My mother

Growing up, as long as I can remember, music has been a huge part of my life. My mother always played 1960's pop music like the Temptations, the Drifters, the Shirelles, the Mamas and the Papas, the Beach boys, ect. Why my father was always on the rock side playing for me at a very early age, bands like "Spirit", not one of the most prolific 1960's band, their only real hit was "Nature's Way" which could have been an early call to realize that global warming is on the horizon. This was all before the age of ten. Although my father went to Life Bible College and was an ordained minister, and I was raised in the church, my father exposed me to a lot of non-Christian music. In fact the only Christian music I heard besides the stuff played in church and Amy Grant was when my mom used to play Randy Stonehill and Honey Tree.

Two of my brothers were also musicians. My oldest brother wrote his own songs and was a very talented singer/songwriter. He even wrote the songs for his wedding. My second oldest brother is still playing music and has recorded about five albums on his own and with various bands. Needless to say, I have always been surrounded by music.

From my sister who is seven years older than me I got the punk influence from bands like "The Misfits", "The Dead Kennedies", "Total Chaos", and "Rancid". I also fondly remember a no-name ska band called "Punch the Clown". From my second oldest brother, I raided his CD collection and listened to the Smashing Pumkins, Oasis, Radiohead, the Beastie Boys, Jennifer Knapp(I didn't even know she was Christian artist at the time), and God knows how many other random bands.

It wasn't until I was just about thirteen that I discovered the first band that I ever fell in love with apart from my family and that was Hanson. I did not know who they were, but I saw there picture, thought they were girls, and couldn't forget the faces. Later I found out they were boys, and that they played music. Needless to say, once I listened to their music, I was hooked!!!

Not having an allowance of more than $2 a week, and not having cable until the age of sixteen, I rarely got to listen to knew music except over the radio. My close friend at the time introduced me to Spice Girls and No Doubt who my sister said were grabage. Which actually caused me to scrape up my No Doubt CD, which later my sister asked why... haha Anyway, fell in love with the Spice Girls and Hanson and they were the only CD's I owned until I discovered Limp Bizkit, I instantly fell in love with their rendition of faith and I played their first album just as much as I played "Spice" and "Middle of Nowhere".

I continued to search out music and I rarely left the confines of pop music because again, this was before the internet was a really big thing and YouTube was nowhere near existence and Napster did not come into prominence until 2yrs later. I was obsessed with Hanson pretty much until I stopped listening to secular music back in 2005. It was only then that I let go of them, I listen to them from time to time to reminise, but that is about it. I had two different websites made about Hanson. the last entitled "Hanson Live and Exposed" which is still up haha.... http://www.angelfire.com/ok/hanson126/

Pretty much after I discovered Hanson, I became extremely obsessed with music, and writing it. I always wrote music, but suddenly it became my life's goal (which hasn't changed) to become a successful singer/songwriter. I felt alive when I listened to music it made me happy. I don't think even my close friend understood it. She liked music and singing and dancing, but I breathed it!!! I began to drive her nuts because even up until the end of our friendship my favorite thing to do was record myself singing with the video camera or make "music videos" with her. It grew old for her after a while, but it never grew old to me... I still do it to this day.

In 1998, I listened to all of the popular bands like Savage Garden, Third Eye Blind, The Wallflowers, Spice Girls, Hanson, Marcy's Playground, The Offspring, Metallica, The Beastie Boys, Natalie Merchant, Jewel, Will Smith, Smash Mouth, TLC, Natalie Imbruglia, Cherrie Poppin' Daddies, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Backstreet Boys, and many many other bands.

Well, the next few years were nothing special musically for me, just the discovery of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, which was awesome. Then of course there was Mandy Moore, whom I still adore, and also Jessica Simpson, whom I do not adore anymore... Than of course Destiny's Child made it huge in 1999 as well, or closer to 2000 with "Say My Name". I mostly just kept listening to people like Britney Spears and that was it. I found NSYNC to be boring and thougt Backstreet Boys were much better, and I still do. Than of course the other side of the coin for me was Kid Rock and Eminem. I was devout followers of them when they came out with their major label debuts in 1999. Who can forget Blink 182's "What's My Name Again" or Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca"? 1999 was also the year that Jennifer Lopez became really big, with her first album "On the 6". You see by 1999, I had a paper route and could actually afford CD's, and I had quite a collection by the end of 1999.

Anyway, that's enough ranting about music for now, I'll get to the more exciting stuff next time!!!

       God Bless ~Amy

[caption id="attachment_152" align="alignright" width="300" caption="pic courtesy of myspace.com/timezones"][/caption]

It's amazing to hear the real-life stories behind Melbourne's music community. When Ross Cottee comes to mind, the real-life stories don't get any more extreme.

In early 2002 while on holiday in Japan, Ross fell from his fifth floor apartment. Ross survived and tirelessly worked on his rehabilitation after emerging from a coma. During his rehabilitation, Ross was found to be as equally unwavering to his music by playing his guitar and bass at every moment possible; sometimes to the point where Ross would ache with exhaustion.

A the time, Ross was playing bass for Melbourne noise rock outfit Riff Random and influenced the band's early trash sound and punk rock aesthetic. Being placed on the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK were other notches on Ross' already impressive resume.

Fast forward to 2008 and Ross is armed with a fresh outlook on life and a new band! He's teamed up with old gigging pals Michael Birleson and Kenton Molloy (ex The Clappers) to form Timezones - a band raw in sound and emotion. Ross' abrasive tones are coupled with garage sounds that transgress time itself to create punk rock masterpieces. It's dizzying combination to get your head spinning with curiosity!

Timezones have produced an initial demo CD of songs at their unrefined best. You'll also find Ross' lyrics are a snapshot of his life post-recovery. Timezones are a true asset to the Melbourne school of life experience.

The other day, on a whim, I grabbed one of my big binders of old cds and took it with me to work. Lu

The other day, on a whim, I grabbed one of my big binders of old cds and took it with me to work. Lugging the thing around on the Metro was kind of a pain, but it was so worth it. I spent most of the day spinning (is spinning still acceptable when they're cds and not LPs?) my old punk rock favorites, quietly rocking out like the totally not lame government employee that I am.

Listening to old punk albums turned out to be quite...therapeutic, I guess. I spend a lot of time looking for new music and like to flatter myself as somewhat of a music connoisseur. But for all my supposed sophistication and discerning indie rock taste, dropping a Bad Religion disc into the player still brings me immediately back to Eagle Reception Hall, Rock Island Illinois, 1998. For me, that is where punk rock lives, and that is what a "scene" is all about.

Everything was so exciting! Being fifteen and walking up those stairs to the dingy second floor where the bands played (sans stage, of course), past old punks with weird tattoos and t-shirts smoking cigarettes, it felt so secretive and "other", but at the same time like something that I could very much call my own and that was unmistakably cool. It was (and still is, thinking back) a rush.

The most evidently great thing about those shows, and punk rock in general, I think, was the feeling of...almost power that they imparted. The feeling that I could completely lose myself in what I was participating in—the people, the merch table, the running through the alleys—and the confidence that gave me, if only fleetingly.

I think a lot about the referential power of music—its ability to make me vividly recall a specific time period, usually the one in which I first got into a particular album. And going back and listening to recordings that have this property has always been rewarding beyond just the enjoyment of the music. But listening to old punk rock cds is different. Beyond referential, they have a sort of transformational power, both hearing them now and back when I first did, in a crowded makeshift venue or through my crappy bedroom speakers. It may be that I'm just giving in to nostalgia, but I like to think that I've managed to keep a little bit of that spirit with me in my "after-scene" life. Even if it now mainly manifests itself in yelling at politicians on the radio.

Anyway, I guess the point of this rambling trip down memory lane is that I highly recommend busting out your old albums and giving them a listen. It's great for the aging psyche.

Disclaimer: if you used to have crappy taste in music, I can't recommend the above actions. Please, just leave your old Smash Mouth cds where they are.

I spent fifty-six minutes on the telephone, yesterday, speaking with a very unlucky 'benefits specialist' who was tasked with the job of fixing my health insurance problems.

Holy crap, dudes. I felt for this woman because she clearly drew the short straw in life.

If you want a difficult job in life, become a corporate benefits specialist who deals with enrollment issues.

Then talk to Laurie Ruettimann, a woman who thinks she knows everything about HR stuff.

When you're done with that, please put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger.

I was very patient with the benefits specialist and demonstrated appreciation when she fixed my issue; however, I was reminded of something my CFO told me back in 2002.

HR is the only career where you get praise for doing your job right the first time.

Wow. That's harsh, punk rockers. Is it true? What do you think? Do HR professionals ask for an award when we simply show up?

I hate this reputation that besieges HR. I'm not looking for special attention at the office. I don't need praise or adulation. I just want some donuts and a cup of coffee.
