Yeah, I know, I just said the other day that I was going to refrain from tech-related postings, but

Yeah, I know, I just said the other day that I was going to refrain from tech-related postings, but it's too late for that. However, I find it necessary to do a quick comparison, because I think this Google Chrome thing is junk, and because I was asked to. So, I'll do a quick, point-by-point comparison of the two.

I'll try my best to compare Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer (IE), and Google Chrome, but most of my results will be subjective.

Speed: IE is the loser in this, it doesn't even compare. Chrome and Safari I find are neck-and-neck, both very fast. That would be because they use the Webkit rendering engine. Firefox 3 is between IE and the Webkit browsers, but Firefox 3.1 is actually faster than Chrome or Safari. The Gecko engine in the Firefox 3.1 alpha is blazing fast. I recommend you try it out.

Performance: From my experience and other tests, IE is once again the big loser here, using more RAM than other browsers. Safari, Firefox 3, and Chrome, are all pretty close, but Chrome might use a little less than Firefox, and Firefox generally uses less than Safari.

Functionality: Firefox is the big winner in this round (big surprise). Obviously with all of its addons, it automatically wins. Although other browsers like IE include support for addons, they don't have nearly as many as Firefox, don't have the same usability, and they aren't nearly as easy to install. The "omnibar" in Chrome is nice, but I prefer the functionality of a dedicated search bar and location bar. The way the omnibar works, if you don't type in a URL, Chrome searches Google for whatever you typed in. The problem with this is that, for instance, with my OpenDNS network, I have shortcuts for my different sites I visit often. Like for Remember the Milk, I just type "rtm" into Firefox's location bar, and it immediately takes me to Remember the Milk. It doesn't work in Chrome. Safari doesn't have any special features that really beg attention, it's just another browser in my opinion. The only thing I like about Safari that isn't in Firefox by default is its bookmarks organizer. The Safari bookmarks organizer is very nice in my opinion. Firefox is the clear winner in this one.

Appearence: This is obviously the most subjective of the topics, but I like Firefox's default personally. Safari's is really nice on OSX, but notsomuch on Windows. IE looks okay too, mainly on Vista. Chrome looks decent enough on Vista, but the XP look is a little too cartoonish for my taste. I also don't like how Chrome puts the tabs above the omnibar, but that, once again, is an opinion. My only complaint of Firefox's appearence would be that in Vista, it doesn't have Aero transparency by default like in Chrome or IE. I like the Glasser extension to do that.

Overall: I think Firefox is the clear winner, but I'm not going to decide that for anyone. Take your pick. I wouldn't use Safari on Windows for security reasons, and I wouldn't use Chrome as my main browser for security reasons as well at the moment. Firefox is quite secure on all systems, and IE7 is secure as well.

I just downloaded Safari, and it's pretty nice!

First of all, it's way faster than any browser I've ever used. It's really great.

The bad things are that I haven't seen any way to import my RSS feeds (of which there are many!), and the whole bookmarks thing is a bit off for me.

I also can't use StumbleUpon. :[

But really, the speed is so amazing, it's utterly crazy.

Now, I need to clean my room and do something other than be on the computer. My back is beginning to hurt, and there are hours of House episodes on the DVR to make my way through.

I’m currently running IE 8.0, Safari and Chrome. Definitely a mixed bag of pros and cons. I

I'm currently running IE 8.0, Safari and Chrome. Definitely a mixed bag of pros and cons. I'm still an Explorer fan, but Chrome has done a good job of taking the best of each, mixed with lots of the good stuff from Firefox, and shows you how nice browsing really could be. But Chrome feels far more like Alpha than Beta.

Safari is somehow... Pleasant to use. It's riddled with quirks that ought to be annoying. It takes a long time to fire up on a PC, and the big, gray, top space of the browser looks clunky and wasteful. Probably an artefact of Chrome/IE having that same space "smoked glass"ed.

I like the way IE does bookmarks, but I think I prefer the button bar concept in Safari. I find Safari's bookmark manager the least intuitive I've ever used, not that it's all that bad but instead of popping it into the window they replace your entire browser space with the bookmark manager and you have to select "Hide all bookmarks" from the menu or notice the little "book" icon is actually a visibility toggle. If you can wrap your head around this perversion of normal UI flow, you can probably get along with it fine.

Having just converted to using Safari's bookmark bar, I liked the presence of the same concept in Chrome; but then it one-upped Safari and put the pages I frequent into the "New Tab" display. IE8 does something sort of similar, their "New Tab" is no-longer the old "About New Tabs" page, but actually shows you things like tabs you recently closed, kinda neat. Safari, on the other hand, just shows you a blank page (I think you can configure it):

Yeah, don't try to read too much into my Chrome browsing habbits, I haven't used it that much. It has quirky problems with a bunch of popular sites.

The first couple of days I tried chrome, it seemed to have unpredictable performance. It crashed when I tried to go to Microsoft's site to see the Seinfeld teaser (note: I just told you that link crashed my browser, dumb dumb). However, I have definitely noticed that stuff which is JavaScript heavy is smoother and more stable, so sites like Facebook etc... I can best describe it as being like the difference between when you used to telnet into computers over a modem vs the first time you logged in to a server on a local network.

My more java-script intense tools at work feel nice and smooth: I pulled up the page that lets me review the chat logs (GM activity, HC activity, /reports, etc) and pulled down 6 months work of /reports in each browser:

IE takes about a 60 seconds downloading the data, about 10 seconds loading it, about 15 seconds sorting it and then about a second rendering the resulting page (which shows 30 reports per page and 442 pages). It takes 1-2 seconds to switch between pages and nearly 30 seconds if you click "All".

Safari takes about 53 seconds downloading the data, about 2 seconds loading it, about 11 seconds sorting it and then about a second rendering the resulting page. It takes about 1.5 seconds to switch between pages and around 12 seconds if you click "All".

Chrome takes about 51 seconds downloading the data, about a second loading it, about 8 seconds sorting it and the page seems to render instantaneously. It takes about 0.8 seconds to switch between pages and around 6 seconds if you click "All"

(Yes, you bet I've suggested to Ramp that he look at whether we could switch to the Google V8 javascript engine instead of the one we're using right now!)

I tend to like sites that have that old "google" look & feel. Google is my search engine, I use LinkedIn, Friends Reunited and Facebook. My own web designs try to borrow from that same tones-of-blue-and-gray.

Because google is based on WebKit, like Safari they both share a cool pro and a bad con: The pro, resizable text areas allowing you to resize any multi-line input box on any page anywhere; the con, no default XML renderer so accessing an XML page just shows either a blank or bits of text. Both IE and Firefox have a default XML viewer that validates and then shows you the XML nicely marked up.

The first few days I was using Chrome, there were definitely some periods of sketchy performance that had me worried it was uploading or downloading a ton of stuff, but watching my modem lights quickly showed that to be untrue.

I do think Google are onto something with the way they are making every window/tab in Chrome a separate process. I've had a lot less multi-tasking issues with Chrome. It doesn't bring a whole lot of new ideas to the table, but it does a nice job of bring a lot of other folks' ideas together and polishing them well. There are some privacy concerns with the combined search/address bar and the fact it is continuously sending data up to Google.

I hope other browsers will take pages out of the Chrome leaf, but Chrome isn't going to become my preferred browser any time. I particularly hope it might shake up the Firefox team to quit being so Andreesen and focus more on function than form: they need to pander to the end user and the average web dev, not the detached and clinical pursuit of web standards to the letter. It surely is a pain supporting the mix of this and that across browsers, but that's how the web evolves - eventually some technique or practice becomes formalized and we move on. I see Firefox as a threat to that process, and supporting Firefox is always more work than as-yet-non-standard solution working elsewhere.

IE8 hasn't grabbed me in any particular way. It feels slower, it's clearly bloatier and although they've polished some IE7 adds, the IE8 adds feel more tacked on than IE7s Firefox/Opera/Safari clones.

So, despite my attachment to IE, here I am writing this article in Safari ;)

1. Avantaje

sistemul multi-touch îl face un telefon foarte uşor de folosit, toate treburile se execută mult mai rapid, iar experienţa este cu totul alta faţă de un telefon cu touchscreen simplu şi tastatură. Tastatura on-screen din iPhone e mult mai uşor de folosit (cel puţin pentru mine) decât o tastatură normală de telefon (vechiul meu telefon era un XDA mini S cu tastatură glisantă);

accelerometrul este o chestie foarte interesantă. Practic, iPhone-ul reacţionează la mişcare (de ex. dacă îl roteşti, comută pe landscape). Există chiar un joc cu o biluţă pe care trebuie să o mişti printr-un labirint, evitând nişte găuri. Şi faci asta mişcând iPhone-ul. Deci este într-adevăr o inovaţie, un mod cu totul nou prin care poţi interacţiona cu un telefon;

browserul Safari afişează paginile web impecabil, ca pe un pc/mac şi este şi multi-tabbed. Însă are şi ceva dezavantaje, pe care le vom discuta mai jos;

în materie de muzică şi video, este excepţional, sunetul e impecabil, claritatea video la fel (ecranul are 16 milioane de culori, la fel ca un monitor de calculator), nu face frame-uri la redarea video (normal, doar are un procesor de 600 MhZ, în timp ce XDA-ul meu avea 200 MhZ), într-un cuvânt e un full-featured iPod;

având abilităţi Wi-Fi şi 3G, e excelent pentru internet (eu consider că e cel mai performant telefon până în ziua de astăzi, referitor la navigarea pe internet);

2. Dezavantaje

Primul dezavantaj este şi nu este un dezavantaj :). Nu îi poţi extinde memoria cu carduri de memorie.  Însă, când ai un iPhone de 16 GB, nu cred că mai e nevoie să-i extinzi memoria (eu unul, nu am nevoie);

Browserul Safari nu recunoaşte Flash şi nici Java (dar Apple lucrează la asta, şi sper că se va rezolva la următorul update de firmware);

Nu are funcţie de Copy-Paste, ceea ce poate fi chiar annoying de multe ori, însă, după zvonuri, Apple lucrează şi la asta şi e posibil să fie disponibilă funcţia asta la următoarele update-uri;

Years ago, it was OK to use IE to surf the internet. No one called you a stupid idiot. No one called you a lame n00b. No one told you to **** Bill Gates' ****.

Not anymore. Unless you want yourself to be compared to Bill Gates' personal... er... serviceman, try to use something besides IE.

If you use IE, the message you're sending out is basically this:

Yeah, it is that big of a medal. And it hangs on your face.

Using IE means that you silently accepted the browser that Microsoft forced you to use by packaging it with Windows. It means that you are a tool. It means that you are a powerless tile in the road Bill Gates follows as he laughs his way to the bank.

Then again, if you stop using Internet Explorer after reading this article, you are sending me a message as well:

If you start using Mozilla Firefox or Opera simply because I told you to, you are a total tool. You simply accept whatever the majority says as gospel truth. If its that easy to make you change your preferences, I want you on my jury when I get arrested.

So what are you gonna do, kid?

As a matter of fact, there are some basic guidelines to follow while choosing a browser.If you are still confused, click here...

With hindsight, its not surprising that Google finally launched its own browser software. The browse

With hindsight, its not surprising that Google finally launched its own browser software. The browser, named Chrome, will compete with existing products such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple's Safari and Opera.

[caption id="attachment_271" align="alignnone" width="385" caption="Screen views of the new Chrome browser from Google. Picture by Google."][/caption]

Google argues that current Web browsers were designed eons ago, before so many of the developments that characterize today's Web: video, scams and spyware, viruses that lurk even on legitimate sites, Web-based games and ambitious Web-based programs like Google's own Docs word processor.

As Google's blog puts it, "We realized that the Web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser."

What this early version of Chrome accomplishes isn't quite that grand. With no status bar, no menu bar and only a single toolbar (for bookmarks), Chrome is minimalist in the extreme. At the moment, for example, there's no way to e-mail a Web page to someone, no full-screen mode, no way to magnify the page (rather than just the text), and no screen for organizing bookmarks. Google says that these features are at the top of its to-do list.

Chrome is, nonetheless, full of really smart features that seem to have been inspired by other browsers - or ripped off from them, depending on your level of cynicism.

Also under the hood are what Google considers some of Chrome's most important features - the security enhancements. Google says that each tab runs in its own "sandbox," so that if there's nasty spyware-type software running on one Web site, it has no access to the rest of your computer, or even the other tabs. Google asserts that this is much stronger protection than Internet Explorer 8 gives you, especially in Windows XP. (Internet Explorer 8 supplies its best protection only in Windows Vista.)

Released last Tuesday (September 2nd), the Chrome browser immediately grabbed 1 per cent of the market, according to Net Applications.

Internet Explorer accounted for 72.2 per cent of the browsers used in August to access the 40,000-plus sites Net Applications monitors. That was a drop of about 0.9 percentage points from July. Meanwhile, Firefox increased its share by about half a percentage point, climbing from 19.2 per cent in July to end August at 19.7 per cent. Other browsers also boosted their shares: Apple's Safari went from 6.1 per cent to 6.4 per cent, while Opera's share hit 0.74 per cent, up slightly from July's 0.69 per cent.

Google's entry into the browser software industry is seen by analysts as inevitable. Google relies upon the browser for its primary access path to users and the primary vehicle for delivering its ads. Not having control of the browser cedes control of this key element and its development path to competitors such as Microsoft.

An interesting and welcome feature of Microsoft’s new Internet Explorer 8 is its “privacy” mode. While the ability to browse privately is both a welcome development for consumers and also a feature of Chrome, it signaled a long-expected threat that Microsoft or Apple could interfere with software features critical to the functioning of the online advertising network/exchanges such as DoubleClick.

By developing its own browser Google can simply eliminate that threat.

It is a tool that Google wish to use in order to capture the Browser market. However, for one main reason that may not be necessarily possible.

For instance, those Internet users who have Window Operating system, it is more likely that the Internet Explorers are already available for usage. The question in this case for an average Joe is why would I want to trouble myself to install another application, if the current application can do the job pretty well? Similarly, for those with Machintos OS, the Safari Browser is also installed. To me, no one want another application if the current one is perfectly usable.

Personally, the reason of Chrome is just to keep the investors happy. Since the investors are more concerned about the bottom line - their investment, Google needs to keep on innovating and raising the share price. In other word, Chrome is just a gimmick for investor.

There’s been a lot of buzz around the new Seinfeld/Bill Gates Microsoft commercial, so I thoug

There's been a lot of buzz around the new Seinfeld/Bill Gates Microsoft commercial, so I thought it only right that I chime in with my two cents on the topic, which, interestingly, is about all that spot was worth though I believe they paid Jerry Seinfeld a jillion dollars.*

*give or take a jillion

Aside from the fact that it was just a lame attempt to try and elevate Microsoft's 'cool' factor, it immediately struck me the same way that the 'Pepsi Challenge' did way back when. Pepsi was never content with their share of market, always trying to compete with Coke with a series of elaborately overproduced commercials like the one where Michael Jackson's head went up in flames. From their 'blind' taste tests to their MTV video-inspired spots, their efforts were misplaced on making their marketing sexy instead of focusing on the product attributes themselves, and delivering on that.

The bottom line is that Apple is cooler. There's no question about that.

Macs are slicker, sleekier, sexier and just 'ier' all around than PCs in almost every way.

And the multimedia capabilities, fuhgeddaboudit.

But, to me, it's never really been a contest. So why is to Microsoft? And to such a degree that they are desperately clinging to a syndicated pop television icon hasbeen to re-ignite their popuarity.

Macs have their place. So do PCs.

OS has some key functionality. So does Windows.

Safari and Internet Explorer... OK, so that one gets a little dicey but the fact of the matter is that the entire planet is not ever going to completely switch to Apple no matter how impressive the apps unveiled at the developer's conference are or how many kazillion Gigabytes the new iPhone has. Short of teleporting you to another location Star Trek-style, mass conversion is not imminent.

What Microsoft should be doing is focusing on the people who are loyal users of their brand and reach out to them instead of trying to appeal a whole other segment of the population who is never going to convert to Microsoft even if they do develop the 'moistest,' 'chewiest' new products.

And while we're on the subject.................. moist?

This is an adjective best reserved for those peddling lubricant or touting the right-out-of-the-oven moist and chewy goodness of a Tollhouse cookie.

But it should never be used to describe software.

Never.

I think that's in the Ten Commandments actually.

Thall shalt not use the word 'moist' in vain.

Shame on you, Crispin Porter.

I wonder if they were motivated more by the media frenzy circus resulting from this spot or winning an Addy award than advising Microsoft effectively about their brand. Or maybe the Creative Director 'lost' the strategy brief because it certainly doesn't seem to be meeting any sound communications objectives.

In my opinion, all Miscrosoft's succeeded in doing is alienating their current customers while becoming the laughingstock of the diehard Apple disciples.

Bill, you're not hip. But that's OK.

You're a trillionaire ten times over; isn't that enough??! Just focus on what it is you do, and do it well. Leave the glitz and glam to Apple and focus on your productivity suite. Quit spinning your wheels on 'delicious' concepts and sharpen your business game before the forbidden fruit takes a bite out of that too.

In the end, remember it was Coke who taught the world to sing and Pepsi who said, 'we're better than Coke,' and Coke is still the market leader.

Credo. E lei ti ama? A suo modo", cantava in 'Tanto'). Domani il giuramento davanti a dio, e quindi basta scuse.

I recently learned that there were problems for Firefox and Safari users with text wrapping instead of stopping at 500 pixels and strange symbols appearing in the place of correct punctuation. I believe that those problems have been addressed now, and the pages should appear the same for all users.

However, if you have problems viewing pages, please let me know.

If Mr A is right (I wouldn’t ever bet against he with the knowledge) in predicting Google’s strategy then it's more than ironic that Microsoft themselves had a similar browser project called Chrome! Scoble says Google must have a sense of humour. I’m not sure they’re the ones who need it in order to laugh – Microsoft must be livid. How hardball can you get? Execs all over Redmond must be dusting off their copies of The Art of War.

But Microsoft have at least entered a fighter into this boxing tournament with their latest version of Internet Explorer, IE8.

Reality check: that’s a gross exaggeration. It’s worth remembering that IE has a 73% market share according to Net Applications. Three quarters of users touch websites via Microsoft! Then again, no one believes ‘the cloud’ won’t revolutionise the way operating systems are used/needed/bought. That means ousting not just IE but Microsoft from newly built machines. (And I’ll never forget the Netscape browser had a 90% market share in the 1990s, proving total implosion is always possible.)

Mozilla’s Firefox remains the popular outsider - certainly until Chrome is available for the Mac - with 19% of the market. Its got loads of plug ins that tech users love, is the de facto browser for the discerning user and has just released a new version. Apple’s Safari has a respectable 6%.

Most early adopters seem to be giving Chrome the thumbs up, but can the Google brand pull it off. Will they just be seen as the new Microsoft? Firefox is the poor cousin everyone loves to love. Google don’t have the cards to play it in quite the same way.

For a very simple reason: Chrome has incognito mode (aka porn mode).

All the guys and boys sure don't want their girlfriend, wife or parents to realize how addicted they are to porn. Now they have a very simple solution, Google Chrome. From now on, they can feel very comfortable browsing their favorite sites knowing that all the records will be deleted once they click the close button. Let's do the math, suppose 50% percent of all people browsing the web is guys and only one tenth of them wants/needs to have this special mode. That's already 5% of the entire browser martket. Notice Safari only have 6% of martket share at this point. IE is gonna have its share, but for the people who's looking for an alternative, Chrome seems to be a pretty good candidate.

I also see Chrome can be a good pick in school's computers. Schools want a browser that's secure, robust, and fast on slow computers. Right now, many schools already have firefox as the default browser for security reasons. Chrome is definitely more rebust, thanks to the one tab one process idea, and faster, this goes to the V8 javascript engine.

It's been a slow week at work. Not a lot going on and I haven't wanted to start any big projects since I'll be gone next week at a conference in Atlanta (which is another story that I'll write more about this weekend)

So....in the midst of the slowness I decided to download FireFox and check it out - see why so many people that read my blog use it over anything else. And seriously?......Why have I not checked it out before? I am loving it and am thrilled with all the neato little add-ons that are available to make it even better. I've got a lot more checking out to do, but my initial impression is really good....I think Internet explorer is going away in my world.

As an aside....I also did some checking out and using both Safari and Google Chrome as well to see which one I liked best. I love Apple and if I had the $ I would have a Mac in a heartbeat, but I'm not feeling the Safari. It's too stripped down and not intuitive enough for me. And Google Chrome? I wanted to like it...I really did, but sadly, I liked it even less than Safari.....it's stripped down to the max and I'm a girl who likes her gadgets.

So there you have it.....my expert take on all things Technological. Aren't you glad you have me in your life!
