" We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The nature and nomenclature of these connections may vary from site to site."

A very clear and useful definition that entails the minimum core functions a web-based application must have to be considered a SNS. But at the same time this definition falls short in defining what the core functions and uses for most popular SNS available are. Maybe because the definition shies away from mentioning that social networks sites are used for social interaction. For instance Youtube is about sharing watching and commenting on online videos, less about public profiles, articulating social connections and friends lists. Still it does have these function and is therefore rightfully defined as a social network site.

In the same article boyd and Ellison make clear that they only use the term 'social network site' and not  'social networking sites', which seemed to circulate in many popular discourses. In these discourses the emphasis is being placed on the ability of certain social network sites to meet now people and create new social ties. Boyd and Ellison are against the use of this term because:

"What makes social network sites unique is not that they allow individuals to meet strangers, but rather that they enable users to articulate and make visible their social networks. This can result in connections between individuals that would not otherwise be made, but that is often not the goal, and these meetings are frequently between "latent ties" (Haythornthwaite, 2005) who share some offline connection."

I do agree that a definition of a 'social network site' is indeed not about whether a user can or cannot make new social ties or maintain old ones. I also agree that the use of both terms is problematic. But I do wonder if the reason given by boyd and Ellison does justice to how the SNSs discussed in her article are being used. It seems to treat networking capabilities and the social interactions as unimportant aspects to define the phenomenom of SNSs. Meeting new people is something that 'could' happen nothing more. SNS then seems to be just about making a list of your social network public. But the SNSs defined and discussed in "Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship"  are all public mediated spaces that people use to socialise. This means that they will always be used as a place to articulate and maintain old ties aswell as a place for making new social ties. Just as is the case with non mediated public social places. The only possible situation i can think of where a social network site wouldn't be used to create new ties is when all the users of the particular site (or social space) already have old social ties with eachother. But in that case the whole purpose of friend lists and the articulation of your social network that define the definition would be useless. Everybody would (eventually) place all other members in their friends list, making articulating your social network as traversing and viewing eachothers social network pointless. So the use of SNSs will always rather then "could" result into the creation of new social ties for some of its users, just as it will always lead to maintaining previous social ties for some of its users. The ability to make new social ties and maintaining old ties are thus both part of any SNS and the meaning of its concept, unlike the mentioned definitions seem to want to admit. For which of the two practises a SNS will be used more dominantly depends on different factors like its design, audience and subject and can change over time. Therefore its impossible or at least confusing to use 'social networking sites' and 'social network sites' as if they were different objects, rather then because 'networking" isn't an integral part of the concept of SNSs itself. The goal of allot of SNSs could be defined as making new social ties, for instance Couchsurfing.com as Dorris' blog on this SNS shows. This of course doesn't mean that users don't use it to maintain pre-existing ties. I also think that the theoretical difference between a network and networking site could be an interesting way to analyze and understand SNSs. Does a certain SNS lean more to a place where old social ties are being articulated and maintained  or a place where new social ties are being established, based on its use?  It would be possible mapping this on a dual axis space. The Y axis would represent time showing when the SNSs were launched and the X axis in what degree the SNSs are being used as a network or networking site. Example sketch:

Such a chart could give a better understanding of what is taking place in the realm of SNSs and how this is developing. It would also show that every SNS is used in some degree for the maintaining of old social ties and the creation of new ones, since no entry would reach one of both ends of the X axis. Of course this is just an example and the entries are in this case based on my own subjective ideas of these SNSs and the posts of my fellow writers on the MoM blog. So most likely the entries on this chart are all wrong. The challenge in making such a graph is to find a more objective way to research and measure the place of all different SNSs on the X axis. In this measurement both the number of new vs old ties of users as the importance of these ties should be considered. Since a users friends list could consist for 90% of people he or she never met outside the SNS, but that user could still spend most of his or hers time on the SNS socializing with the 10% where the social tie was an old one.

Anyway, I think the point that i want to make is that how danah and Ellison define social network sites is a very useful and clear description, that makes it easy to determine if a site is a SNS or not. But by shying away from defining social network sites as places where social actions take place don't grasp the meaning and use and essention of the SNSs phenomenon.

Definition
According tot danah boyd*  and Nicole Ellison in Social networksites: My definition,  a social network site is ‘category of websites with profiles, semi-persistent public commentary on the profile, and a traversable publicly articulated social network displayed in relation to the profile.’ She clarifies:

Profile. A profile includes an identifiable handle (either the person’s name or nick), information about that person (e.g. age, sex, location, interests, etc.). Most profiles also include a photograph and information about last login. Profiles have unique URLs that can be visited directly.
Traversable, publicly articulated social network. Participants have the ability to list other profiles as “friends” or “contacts” or some equivalent. This generates a social network graph which may be directed (”attention network” type of social network where friendship does not have to be confirmed) or undirected (where the other person must accept friendship). This articulated social network is displayed on an individual’s profile for all other users to view. Each node contains a link to the profile of the other person so that individuals can traverse the network through friends of friends of friends….
Semi-persistent public comments. Participants can leave comments (or testimonials, guestbook messages, etc.) on others’ profiles for everyone to see. These comments are semi-persistent in that they are not ephemeral but they may disappear over some period of time or upon removal. These comments are typically reverse-chronological in display. Because of these comments, profiles are a combination of an individuals’ self-expression and what others say about that individual.

Does Hyves meet this definition? A person or an organisation can make a profile that’s either public or private. Persons can publish their profile and can add information just basically (for example only nickname, sex, age) or much extended. The profile has its own url. There’s a list of friends on the profile, a pallet of images that are clickable. You can’t see this if the person’s profile is private or only visible for friends and you’re not one of them. You’re only someone’s friend if both you and you’re wannabe-friend agree. It’s possible to leave comments on a profile, it’s called ‘krabbelen’. Also, you can ‘tik’ someone, you can leave a little personal message. On the profile persons can blog and drop a ‘wie wat waar’, a Twitter-ish whereabouts-message. This all makes that Hyves meets to the definition of social networksites (often just called SNS). It’s not an attention network, both (wannabe) friends have to agree to the digital relationship.

Groups
There’s an important feature of Hyves boyd doesn’t speak about in her analyzes of social network sites. Hyvers can start or join a group that’s related to a theme, a celebrity, a company, a brand or whatsoever. These groups can be set up by anyone who has a Hyves-profile. A group, called a Hyve, looks similar to a personal profile, but there’s no real personal profile-function as mentioned above. Here also, a group can be private and even non-visible. Members of the group are able to discuss on a forum.

At least interesting are the Hyves that are related to a brand. In fact, one of the H&M Hyves, groups linked to this shop, is one of biggest Hyves with more than 200.000 members. About forty groups are linked to Jamba, a provider of ring tones etcetera. Most of them are anti-Hyves: groups whereon members complain about, or worse, curse on Jamba. In this context, a social network site is used for letting know and share the hate on that particular brand. Remarkable is it to see, you don’t have to be the owners of the brand to start a Hyve about it.

Goldmembers
Using Hyves is free. Everybody can set up a profile. But if you like to have more rights, you can become a Goldmember. It will cost you some money, but as a Goldmember you don’t have to deal with advertisement on your profile and more traffic (who, when?) on your profile is visible for you.

How to study?
Social Network Sites don’t have a century long history and they exist only a few years. In 2006, Hanneke Vos researched the motivation of Hyvers. Why do people use Hyves? In her conclusion Vos says that the main reasons for ‘Hyving’ are escaping and relaxing, communication with friends and fun. She did a qualitative survey and I think that’s a proper way to study phenomena like Hyves. Quantitative surveys are just a freeze of one moment, while social network sites change, grow or decline all the time. Personally, I think the outcome of such a survey is interesting for marketing purposes, but not that significant for humanities research.

Danah boyd says that there’s a lack of experimental or longitudinal studies. Scholars, according to boyd, still have little understanding of who is and who is not using. There’s a discussion going on the importance of social network sites, she says. I think that’s not the discussion. It’s 2008 and many people - the half of the Dutch citizens, for example, have a Hyves profile -  are is some way digital networking, at least in the United States and Europe. That proves the importance of social network sites. They can’t be ignored.

    ปรับแต่งหน้าเว็บได้โดยใช้เครื่องมือของเว็บ โดยที่ผู้ใช้ไม่จำเป็นต้องรู้ภาษา สคริปต่างๆ 
    ปรับเปลี่ยน layout ได้ตามต้องการ ด้วยการ drag-and-drop กล่องในแต่ละ section ไปที่ต้องการได้ดังใจ 
    สร้างธีมเองได้
    บันทึกธีมที่เราสร้างขึ้นมาไว้ใช้ยามเบื่อ ได้ถึง 10 ธีม
    สามารถขอ "ยืมใช้ธีม" ที่เพื่อนของคุณสร้าง ขึ้นมาได้ เพียงแค่กด "เก็บธีมลงแฟ้ม" ในหน้าโปรไฟล์ของเพื่อน

ระบบวิดเจ็ต (widget)

    สามารถเพิ่มกล่อง widget ในหน้า profile ของคุณได้
    widget มีหลายแบบให้คุณเลือกใช้ได้ตามต้องการ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นกล่อง html กล่อง bookmark และอีกมากมาย ซึ่งเราจะเพิ่มมาให้ใช้เรื่อยๆ
    กล่อง widget  ต่างๆ สามารถย่อ-ขยายได้เพื่อความง่ายในการย้ายกล่อง
    เปิด-ปิดแสดงการใช้งานกล่อง widget ได้ชั่วคราว 
    การลบ-การเพิ่ม widget เป็นแบบ realtime กด เพิ่มปุ๊บเห็นปั๊บ 
    แก้ไขชื่อกล่อง widget ได้ตามใจคุณ 
    สามารถ "ขอยืมใช้" กล่อง widget ของเพื่อนได้ เพียงแค่คลิกปุ่ม "ขอยืมใช้" ที่อยู่มุมล่างของกล่อง widget แต่ละกล่อง (กล่องที่ขอยืมใช้จะถูกบันทึกในโฟลเดอร์ widgets ในหน้าโปรไฟล์)
 

ระบบ Message Box

    เขียนข้อความหาเพื่อนโดยใช้ html editor 
    ระบบการรับ-ส่งข้อความใช้ง่าย เหมือนระบบอีเมล์ที่ใช้กันอยู่ปัจจุบัน มีกล่อง Inbox, Sent, Draft, Trash, และ New Mail
    ระบบบันทึกไฟล์เสียง-ภาพจากกล้องเว็บแคม และจัดส่งให้เพื่อนได้

ระบบฉุกเฉิน

    ระบบย้อมกลับ สามารถเข้าจัดการข้อมูลในกล่องต่างๆ ได้ทุกกล่อง แบบทางลัด ในกรณี ที่คุณ ใส่โค้ด HTML javascript ผิด ทำให้หน้า profile ของคุณไม่สามารถแสดงผลการทำงานได้ตามปกติ 
     เมื่อเข้ามาในหน้านี้ คุณสามารถเข้าไปแก้ไขหรือลบ ข้อมูลในกล่องต่างๆ ที่คุณได้ใส่ข้อมูลผิดได้  เพื่อที่จะสามารถใช้งานได้ตามปกติ 
    สามารถตั้งค่าเริ่มต้นธีมใหม่ได้ในกรณี ที่ธีมพัง

...และยังมีอีกเยอะ ที่ทยอยออกมาให้ใช้กัน
 

หมายเหตุ
 - เว็บ myFri3nd สามาถใช้ได้ดี (support) กับ IE6 , IE7 , และ Firefox 
 - ระบบปฎิบัติการของสมาชิกควรติดตั้ง Flash Player และ Java Runtime เพราะแอปพลิเคชั่นส่วนหนึ่งต้องให้ซอฟต์แวร์ดังกล่าว
