Anyone who owns a copy of Sonic Youth's Evol has seen a bit of Richard Kern's art. You might even recognize the chick in the video below. She's Elizabeth Carr, who goes by the name Lung Leg and she's the girl, uh, freaking out on the cover of Evol in a frame from Kern's legendary camp fest You Killed Me First. (For a whole post on album covers featuring famous artists' work, go here.)

Below you'll find the first 8 and half minutes of You Killed Me First (1985). It has a very John Waters-esque feel. Art buffs and New York know-it-alls might recognize performance artist Karen Finley as the mother and the late artist/writer David Wojnarowicz as the father. Photographer Jessica Craig-Martin plays the normal daughter and Lung Leg of course, plays the hellbent daughter. (Warning: contains sex, violence and profanity. NSFW at all).

I'll try to find the last two and a half minutes so you know how this crazy story ends. Enjoy!

Tomorrow I report for jury duty. In all my 40 years I have never ever served on a jury. The last time I was summoned as a standby juror I called to report and they decided that people who's last names begin with the letter " S" should not serve. Coincidentally I had already taken that day off of work weeks in advance so I was rather perturbed.

I am kind of excited about this now - only because I did not ask for the day off and I get to do something that I have never done. I also get to sleep late - meaning I don't have to get up at 5:00 am - I can sleep till 6:00 am. I love Chicago !

I wonder what kinds of questions they are going to ask me when I get interviewed - cause I'm a really bad liar. I hope they don't ask me about things I don't want to talk about, like why I am scared of all cops.

This all started back when Public Enemy and Sonic Youth played a show together at the Aragon Ballroom in the early 90's. This was an exciting time for me, I was going to UIC and hanging out with some really cool people. There was Carl the pothead who had gone to Lane Tech H.S. with me. We had study hall together one year and you can bet that most of that time we only showed up for attendance and after that we snuck out to smoke on the rocks outside. Erik the film and photography major who would later leave us to go to the Art Institute. Kristen and Joel a brother and sister who were (both ?) philosophy majors. Sari the lesbian who tried desperately to convince me to stop wearing make-up for The Man, and a cast of many other characters whose names escape me.

It was during the first Gulf War and we would all go downtown after school and protest till it got very dark out and the crowds dispersed. A number of us were involved in peaceful political activism in some form. I was regularly attending the war protests as well as this other "Earth Support" group that was trying to get the cafeteria at UIC to stop using non-recyclable plates and plastic silverware. I don't remember if we actually accomplished anything with that other than holding weekly meetings where we would inevitably end up sitting around and talking about other stuff.

A few of us got tickets to the Sonic Youth/Public Enemy show and we all went to it separately. I went to the show with this really sweet guy named Paul - an engineering student who I met through my lab partner Dave Dobie. The whole night was strange to begin with. It started with my anticipation of my father being angry with me for going out on a date with a young man who was black. Since I never had done that before I took it upon myself to casually mention to my father that my date for the night was on his way over to pick me up, would come inside to say hello and "by -the -way - he's -black". My father did not take very kindly to this fact and replied " What will the neighbors think?" I was fuming, my dad had no clue what an awesome person Paul was. He was a lot more intelligent and had a lot more class than most of the guys I had dated thus far. Not to mention I was more embarrassed of the ethnocentric pieces of white trash that lived on my block than I ever would be for dating a black man.

Paul came in, was very polite, and I took off in a huff. I didn't discuss the prior events with Paul that night or ever, actually. We went to the show and as we walked up to the Aragon Ballroom I recall seeing a lot of paddy wagons outside sort of waiting around. I didn't think about whether or not it was strange at that time. I also noticed that the R.C.P had a presence that night and were peacefully handing out their Communist literature outside the venue.

The show was great - I was totally blown away by it. But what I mostly remember about that show happened afterwards in front of the venue. Apparently an impromtu war protest began outside of the Aragon and a riot ensued. I was among the very first people to leave the Aragon that night because we left before the show was about to end. As I got close enough to observe what was happening I was told to leave the scene immediately. I noticed that cops were handling people in a very rough way and there was nothing we could do about it. I saw a cop twist a kids arm around his back forcefully. I saw a cop shaking a woman and throw her video camera to the ground - smashing it. Then she was forcefully placed like a rag doll inside the paddy wagon. The cops also had tape covering the tops of their badges. I did not see what led up to this so I have no way of knowing for sure the details about this situation.

The next day there were lots of other stories from kids who were at the show that made me think that the whole riot was incited by the officers. Why were all those paddy wagons there at the beginning of the show ? And how could there have been a large amount of protesters already when the show was still going on ? The number of officers surely out-numbered the amount of people that were standing around when I got to the scene. Later the Chicago Reader ran a story about this and in it they mentioned that another gentlemen who I'd actually met before was beat up for no reason at all and ended up sueing and winning a settlement. This was the first time in my life that I had ever seen anything like this and unfortunately it would not be the last.

18 years later - and after having to witness yet another questionable incident involving a policeman a couple of years ago (about which I had the opportunity to speak up and was later interviewed by someone at internal affairs) - I am still scared anytime I am in contact with a police officer.
