TD Bank will change its lending rates on Tuesday, after the Thanksgiving holiday.(Kevin Frayer/Canadian Press)

A $25-billion mortgage backstop from the federal government prompted Canada's banks to announce cuts in their prime rates Friday, although by different amounts.

TD Canada Trust and the CIBC will cut their rates by 15 basis points to 4.35 per cent, they said.

But the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Bank of Montreal, the Royal Bank, National Bank, Laurentian Bank and Caisse Centrale Desjardins opted for a 0.25 per cent cut, to 4.25 per cent.

All of the reductions take effect on Tuesday, Oct. 14, the day after Thanksgiving.

The cut "will reinforce confidence in the Canadian economy," Chris Hodgson, Scotiabank's head of domestic personal banking, said in a release.

Earlier Friday, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said the government would buy $25 billion worth of Canadian mortgage-backed securities to "make loans and mortgages more available and more affordable for ordinary Canadians and businesses."

The banks welcomed the move.

"We believe that this initiative will be put into effect in a way that will reduce our overall cost of funds and, as a result, we are dropping our rate today," Tim Hockey, president and CEO of TD Canada Trust, said in a release.

The Bank of Canada cut interest rates by half a percentage point earlier this week, but the commercial banks only passed on half the reduction.

Under the government's mortgage proposal, the $25 billion will flow back to the banks and other institutions as a way of injecting cash into the country's mortgage market.

The federal government anticipates that few of these mortgages will default and most are guaranteed by the CMHC. Ottawa actually expects to earn a profit from its holdings of the securities.

Split is one of my absolute favourite cities in Europe - but if you ask me why, I dont have an answer. Its just the feeling in there, I guess. You can feel (or smell!) it for exaple in an early morning walk on the fish market, like I did in August 2004.

Oh, I can hear the excited yelps of teenage gals (and guys) across the world echoing through the sky today.

The couple with the two silliest names in pop, Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift, have ended their short-lived relationship according to Us Weekly. Although... they never actually confirmed their relationship, but these days, who needs to? Apparently the 19-year-old JoBro dumped the Swiftster over the phone. That's low Joe. Low.

A source tells the magazine: "He broke her heart."

Poor Swifty...

Who cares! Joe Jonas is a free man!

She has cancelled a bunch of shows and nobody knows why. Some say she is sick and others claim her tour is flopping. In any case, the tour was one of her best and the album flopped because of poor marketing. I mean, "Rock With You" was one of the greatest songs of this year and "Feedback" was a hit. Her record company refused to promote anymore singles and everything fell apart. I hope she is ok.

Creating a Secure CHURCH
PART 1 : Objectives & Obstacles
Chapter 2 : History & Ministry
2.3

Creating a Secure CHURCH
PART 1 : Objectives & Obstacles
Chapter 2 : History & Ministry

2.3 Our Church History

What are the things from the past that shape the nature of our church, how it came to be, how it actually is in reality today? Remember we are looking at these things because they can hinder us being or becoming a secure church.

I've said here the things that shape ‘our' church because I believe it is easier to think about these things practically when we consider the local church, the expression of it to which we belong. The following are some of those factors that come from our history, our past. They are just some examples of the sort of things that get in the way.

Denomination or Group

Being part of a denomination, group or stream should not be the issue here but so often it can be. If denominational or group loyalty and practice has become very strong, it often becomes easy to forget this ‘fundamental nature of Jesus' that I'm talking about that should be there to help create real security. Instead we may replace it with an artificial security that is an emotional feeling based upon a building, a form of service, our denomination or group, or even ‘our history'.

Whether it be denominational, or free, or new churches, the danger is always lurking, that we conform to a particular way of thinking, that lacks the crucial characteristics of the person of Jesus Christ. Why should it be like that? Because it is so easy to focus on “other issues”, things that are important to our group that are other than these characteristics we've been considering.

Having been part of a large denominational church in the past, I am aware that it is only natural to feel secure because we're part of a large institution, it's only natural to feel secure when we're part of a large organisation, but the church was never meant to be an institution or organisation and such feelings of security are actually expressions of false security that we referred to in Book One.

Consideration: Dare we face why we are like we are? Have we made the values and name of our church group, the things from which we gain our sense of security? Are we afraid of new things so that the Holy Spirit is not allowed to touch our hallowed ways? Indeed if other Christians met me, would they be able to identify the group or denomination I come from by the language I use, or the particular practices we hold onto that may not be so godly and righteous as we think? We may be living in a fools' paradise.

Crisis Situations

A church that is going through a crisis easily loses focus. The crisis may be one of pastor versus deacons, leaders versus the rest, disagreement over a building project, upset because of lack of communication, the list is endless. In such situations the ‘issue' becomes all-important and the enemy has a habit of helping us forget what we're about. In such a situation people try to create an artificial security for themselves that is based on the paper-thin belief that “We're right!” or “They're wrong!”

In such situations there is almost a security in what I can only describe as a crusading spirit, where we take up arms to ‘fight for justice' or ‘fight for right'. In fact we are very often destroying what is good and right in the name of justice. In a confrontational conflict, words like “love, acceptance, respect and caring” take a back seat, and truth may be far from us.

Consider by way of illustration, the scene in the first chapter, where Pastor John suddenly finds himself confronted by his other leaders with a demand that he resigns. What are the indicators in that situation that say that here is an insecure church?

• It was a church that focused on ministry and programmes and little on open, personal relationships.

• The church was too busy and people didn't have time to get close. As a result there was a measure of unreality that was felt by many but recognised by few.

• In their growing frustration at seeing a number of ongoing, unreal areas of church life (as they saw it) and being powerless to do anything about it (as they felt it), the other leaders began to discuss their frustrations behind Pastor John's back. It all happened so gradually that none of them noticed it. Indeed they each quietly justified it by “we are right”.

• Accepting that perhaps Pastor John had become stale, services had become lifeless and communication was zero at the top, the other leaders exhibited their insecurity by bringing about the Conference Room Coup with no room for talking. The lines had been drawn long back, without any awareness on Pastor John's part. He had learned long ago to look positively on all aspects of church life, and this had now meant he missed the growing wave of grievance right before him.

• The result was that the Pastor, who desperately needed care and consideration himself, was suddenly alone, feeling very needy, and was wondering whatever had happened. It would take him months if not years to understand the dynamics behind the coup.

After such a crisis, the church is not the same. Where there is a split, leadership loss, general upheaval or whatever, if we use the Scriptural analogy of the church being Jesus' body, it's like the body has been through a major accident or trauma. Many people are in a state of shock, because such a thing is completely contrary to the working of the Holy Spirit and He is severely grieved (Eph 4:30). How important it is, therefore, that we seek to do all we can to avoid such things happening.

Consideration: When next there seems a conflict of ideas or of principles, dare we stand back and lay down our stronghold and seek to view everything through a filter of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22,23)? As soon as we sense a loss of these fruit, can we lay down our arms and call a cease to the potential conflict?

The Latest Project

Churches are good at projects and when there is a project on the agenda then mundane issues such as the very environment of church life get forgotten. The focus is placed on the goal of the project and everything and everyone can become subservient to it. Concern for individuals can often be the price paid to achieve ‘great things'. It's only years later, as we view the scattered bodies who are the casualties, might we wonder about what we achieved.

Consideration: Is it possible to be a project church AND have the environment I've referred to? Yes, but I suspect there are various checks and controls we need to have to do it:

• Is the project the brain-child of one person, or has it been owned by the whole church?

• Has it been owned by the whole church by a vision being caught instead of being imposed, so that people who aren't so clear on it aren't made to feel bad?

• Does the project mean the people of the church feel excited by faith instead of being under pressure to give or to work?

• Have we become so caught up in our project that we have lost sight of the environmental factors referred to in this chapter?

On August 31st I posted that splitting the Taliban from Al-Qaeda was key to getting out of Afghanistan with any half-decent result. Many people responded to my post saying I didn't know what I was talking about and that this was impossible. But now it is clearly happening, just as I called for. I wonder if the Saudis read MediaShack? CNN reports:

LONDON, England (CNN)-- Taliban leaders are holding Saudi-brokered talks with the Afghan government to end the country's bloody conflict -- and are severing their ties with al Qaeda, sources close to the historic discussions have told CNN.

The militia, which has been intensifying its attacks on the U.S.-led coalition that toppled it from power in 2001 for harboring Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, has been involved four days of talks hosted by Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, says the source.

The talks -- the first of their kind aimed at resolving the lengthy conflict in Afghanistan -- mark a significant move by the Saudi leadership to take a direct role in Afghanistan, hosting delegates who have until recently been their enemies.

They also mark a sidestepping of key "war on terror" ally Pakistan, frequently accused of not doing enough to tackle militants sheltering on its territory, which has previously been a conduit for talks between the Saudis and Afghanistan.

This should not be a shock to anyone because the Taliban were never natural allies of Al-Qaeda in the first place. Lawrence Wright in the The_Looming_Tower,by far the best book on Al-Qaeda, tells the story of how Mullah Omar gave Prince Turki Al-Faisal a verbal commitment to hand over Bin Laden in the late 1990s. Does that sound like natural allies? Abdel Bari Atwan who knows these groups better than anyone else said the same_thing. So much of this mess could have been avoided if the US had made a better effort at dividing the Taliban from Al-Qaeda much earlier, say back in 2001, but later is better than never.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- This was hardly a routine win for Daniel Alfredsson.

Playing an NHL regular-season game in his native Sweden and skating off with his Ottawa Senators teammates after a satisfying victory could be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

"This is an experience that I'll always remember and which I'm going to rank among the highlights in my career," Alfredsson said after helping the Senators to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Alfredsson, who says he will not return to the Swedish Elite League when he ends his NHL career, set up Dany Heatley's two power-play goals.

Heatley, who also had a goal in Ottawa's 4-3 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday, helped the Senators take three of four points during the season-opening European series.

"The way we played I think is encouraging," Alfredsson said. "Heater stepped up with two big goals today and showed the way.

"We kept them in check throughout the game. They had some chances but (goalie) Alex (Auld) played very well. So we have to be really happy with this. They're a good team. They have a lot of confidence since last year, and to be able to get three of four points here is big for us."

Alfredsson, who played on Sweden's 2006 Olympic champion team, praised his linemates.

"I've talked a lot about (Jason) Spezza and Heatley in the Swedish media when I've played with them," Alfredsson said. "Now they can see that I stand for my word and that they're two really good players. I have a lot of fun and he (Heatley) showed why."

Heatley has found a comfort zone alongside Alfredsson and Spezza, too.

"The three of us have a great chemistry," Heatley said. "In the summer when we come back to training camp it takes us a week or so. But we always seem to get our chemistry back, and this weekend we did. We have known each other for three years and it makes it a lot easier, when the three of us get together it's a very easy adjustment."

Alex Goligoski spoiled Auld's shutout bid with a power-play goal just two seconds before the final buzzer in front of another sold-out crowd of 13,699 at Globe Arena.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby set up Goligoski's goal.

Heatley gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 13:07 in the second period. Alfredsson started the play with a pass from the left circle to Spezza just beside the goal. Heatley, left unchecked on the other side, took a pass from Spezza and put the puck between goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's legs.

Heatley scored again at 12:17 of the third, when Pittsburgh was short-handed again, one-timing a slap shot past Fleury from close range. Alfredsson set up the goal with a nice pass.

"As a group it was a big weekend for us," Heatley said. "We were hungry for these two games. Even if we only got one point last night we felt we worked hard. We played well and could easily have won that game. We tried really to come on and battle as a group and we did a good job at that."

Antoine Vermette made it 3-0 with 4:10 left of the game, skating in alone and beating Fleury with a low shot.

Both goalies went the distance. Auld had 30 saves, Fleury stopped 24 shots.

In the first period, both teams played well defensively. Pittsburgh's power play continued to fizzle, failing twice. In Saturday's opener, the Penguins squandered five straight man-advantage chances in the first period.

"Specialty teams will be very important in today's NHL and we've done a really good job on our penalty killing," Alfredsson said. "Our power play stepped up."

This marked the second straight year the NHL began the season in Europe, building off games in 2007 between Los Angeles and Anaheim in London.

The NHL returned to Europe with regular-season openers in both the Swedish and Czech capitals. In Prague, the New York Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning by identical 2-1 scores to sweep that two-game series.

This was the first time in league history two teams began the regular season in Sweden, one of Europe's top ice hockey nations.

This marked the second time Pittsburgh played the first two games of the regular season on international ice. The Penguins travelled to Tokyo in 2000-01, splitting a two-game series with the Nashville Predators.

It was the fifth time the NHL began its season outside of North America, with the other three openers held in Japan in 1997, 1998 and 2000.

On Saturday, Pittsburgh will host the New Jersey Devils in its first game back in the United States, and Ottawa will welcome the Detroit Red Wings.

The people of St. Aidan's Anglican parish in Windsor have voted to break away from the local diocese and join the Anglican Network in Canada (ANIC), which is part of the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone that oversees churches in most of South America, reports Thaddeus M. Baklinski, LifeSiteNews.com.

St. Aidan's is the seventh Anglican church in Ontario, and the eleventh nationally, to secede from the Anglican Church of Canada over doctrinal issues focused on acceptance of homosexuality.

Members of the parish said they wanted to return to a more orthodox and traditional version of Anglicanism, centered around the authority of scripture and the gospel.

James I. Packer, Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, BC and one of the most highly regarded Protestant theologians today, said the Anglican Church of Canada has been "poisoned" by a liberal theology that "knows nothing of a God who uses [the Bible] to tell us things and knows nothing of sin in the heart and in the head."

Charlie Masters, the executive archdeacon of ANIC, told the Windsor Star, "The big issue (is) around the Bible and the authority of scripture and the gospel," which teaches that human sexuality is reserved for marriage, which is an exclusive commitment between a man and a woman.

In a news release, ANIC said, "Unfortunately, the Anglican Church of Canada continues to abandon mainstream Anglican teaching and doctrine, particularly in relation to the authority of the Bible, breaking with the vast majority of global Anglicans."

The Windsor Star reported that St. Aidan's bishop, the Right Rev. Robert Bennett, said, "They may not say it, but the issue of same-sex marriage is underlying the whole debate," and that he will be investigating the validity of the vote.

"We're trying to clarify the details," said Bennett.
You will find some bar and restaurants. Be aware that in some part of the beach croatian people love to play "Picigin" all day long. this game is a sort of handball with a little ball and can be dangerous or a lot of fun!

Prefix and Celebully are reporting that one of my favorite production duos of all time, The Neptunes, are breaking up. This comes as quite a shock, but I'm pretty confident that Chad and Pharrell will do well with their own solo careers. Here's the full story.

via Prefix:

Celebully has reported that the Neptunes, the producing team of Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams, are breaking up. Apparently there has been a lot of animosity between the two (maybe because Pharrell is becoming an increasingly popular solo act?), and they have decided to work alone. How this will affect Hugo and Williams’ rockist side project N.E.R.D. has not been determined.

This situation has me trying to figure out what my favorite Neptunes beat of all time is. But in the words of the great Sarah Palin, "I'll try and find some and bring 'em back to ya." Except I've actually brought them back. You can check out my favorites after the jump.

Today we split from Split and made our way to Zagreb, in the process bidding adieu to the palm tree.

Whether because of its symmetry, it's prehistoric leaves or just its location, there's something about palms that makes one sad to see them go.

An ode to a tree:

Over there sits a palm
My favourite type of tree
It's not all that special
Yet it's quite appealing to me

It's hard to feel cold
When a palm sways over head
And life's always fun and good
When palm leaves lie near your bed

Beside a harbour on an island
Or a city by the sea
You can't really go wrong
With a palm, says me

But now we leave the palm behind
And meet new chestnut trees
Forgetting the sunny days of summer
And three kuna bathroom fees

Zagreb and northern countries beckon
And cold days are ahead I reckon

But at least I've bought a coupl'a days
Watching as a palm tree sways.

As you can see, there's a reason I was never all that fond of poetry, except to make crude jokes or pun-filled songs. As for the bus ride itself, we lucked out and arrived at the Split bus station just as a carriage heading to Zagreb was taking passengers. Even better, the bus, although we got on blind and unsure of exactly how long the trip would take, made a beeline straight for the capital city, only stopping at a truckstop where we grabbed a tasty Dalmatian ham and cheese sandwich. (No, Dalmatian ham isn't Fido's rump, it's your typical thinly sliced prusciutto smoked.) In all the trip of about 378-kilometres took just under five hours.

The trip itself led us up a Coquihalla-esque hill out of Split and through hills of rock and shrubbery. It became quickly obvious why most of the houses here, particularly the older ones, are built of rock. The further we traveled though, the more temperate the climate, and the terrain, got, with forests of hardwood trees appearing across a landscape not unlike that of the interior of B.C.

The highway was a toll road (I hear that's gone from B.C. now), new and a lot nicer than the Coke. In fact, much of the infrastructure here is better than that of Canada, despite the fact the average person here makes something like $10,000 a year.
