Hey! Sorry I haven't been around lately. School's been keeping me occupied.

The stage is scheduled to start building Sept. 5. What might it be? I have no idea. But I can't wait to see it. Rory of course kept his beak shut about the stage, even a little hint. *sigh* I guess that's just the way he is. :-/

He sure makes me go ballistic. I don't get half the time what he means when he says something!

Events coming up this month:

Looks like they might bring back the pink backpack!

In other news, a new wallpaper and fan art is on the Community Page!

Also, I found out that Aqua Grabber was updated. Now you can play longer and not run out of as much air as you did before. Phew! That helps a lot!

Since the first mention of the possibility of Lewy Body Disease for my Dad, I've been doing quite a bit of research to educate myself about this little known yet insidious disease. After reading about other's experiences I've learned that many LBDers in the beginning stages have a relatively good quality of life. Some are able to drive, shop, fly, take trips, work around the house, cook and so much more all on their own. Finding this out gave me and my family great hope that Dad would be okay for a while. Supposedly Dad is in the beginning stages so we thought he'd be able to be more like his old self and putter around the house, read the newspaper, and par take in normal every day activities. Unfortunately, this is not the case and really, comes as a bit of a shock to us. If Dad truly is in the early stages, why can't he do similar activities like others in the same predicament?

For instance, we have to help get Dad dressed and ready every morning which can easily be an hour long project. He can't cut up his own meals, make coffee, or perform the simplest of every day tasks. Going to get the mail and possibly walk the dog is about all that he can accomplish these days. Why is this? Why isn't he as good as others are if he is indeed in the beginning of the disease? I read Dr. Graboys, a Boston cardiologist with LBD, flies on his own; or, others' loved ones are left at home while the spouse goes off to a work conference, etc. I don't know how this could ever be possible with Dad. He would NEVER be able to handle any of those situations right now. Don't get me wrong, I know even those in the early stages have difficulty with every day tasks, but it just seems like it is so much harder for Dad and he isn't even able to do an inkling of what other are able to do who are in the early stages.

I'm pretty sure being over-medicated has something to do with his inabilities and I suspect those with loved ones in the early stages of Lewy Body who are performing well have extremely LBD savvy doctors working for them. The meds are something we're trying to get under control for Dad and we have even switched some doctors in attempt to get Dad on the right track. Some times I wonder if it really is all because of the balancing act of the medications or could Dad be more advanced in the disease than we and his neurologist think? I pray that he isn't more advanced and that eventually the right course of prescriptions drugs will be found to work for Dad. Until then, we can't help but wonder...

There’s a plethora of lifestyle choices available today that conveniently offer the opportunity of neatly packaging one’s sense of self into a fixed and marketable identity. New Aged, redneck, Goth, surfer, academic, valley girl, Republican—you name it, and it could be the new look for you! This is an exciting idea for someone like me who was born with a sort of personality ADD. I want to be them all. I have to be them all. . .well, perhaps not Republican.

Political passions aside, I have taken on the feat of defining myself through a series of identity crisises strung together like a chain of paper children holding hands across the ceiling of a pediatric waiting room. Each link in the chain (my nerdy stage, my “I only wear black” stage, my crazy sorority girl stage) comprises who I am today. Right now I’m hooked on Zen and veganism, which is not to say that the fact that I understand this to be a phase demeans those who actually adhere to these strict regulations for life. I do take it seriously. . .now. But like most of my personal stages, I know I’ll look back and chuckle at the silliness that is my search of self. At least now I get to enjoy a mind and body stage that will likely leave me thinner and less temperamental –not to mention way more respectable than my novelty key chain and leather pants stage that occurred sometime back in high school.

Like most of my stages, however, I botched that one as well. Sure, I was successful in collecting the most annoying of key chains. You know, the kind that say, “I don’t suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it,” and “Talk to the hand.” But it was the pant-thing I messed up seeing as I didn’t have the pleasure of wearing actual leather pants, which in retrospect is probably a good thing considering I’m now a vegan with this whole “animal rights” complex. But let me tell you, the gap between real leather pants and imitation leather pants on the coolness scale is an astounding fabric knockoff phenomena. One set beckons a ride of the backs of hot, fervent Harley’s and (most importantly) hot, fervent men, while the other favors screaming I’m broke, and Mama wouldn’t help me pay for the real thing! Which, really, is just about as un-cool as it gets. Louie Vuitton and Coach knockoffs are usually fairly respectable as they are a confident display of both a sense of fashion and a reasonable understanding of personal finance, but my pants had no such defense. I was cheap and out of style. Period.

They weren’t even a vinyl kind of pleather. They were more like pleather’s pleather, and the shame of acknowledging that I got them for $10 at Ross didn’t even hit me until a few years later when I was watching a re-run of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That was the look I was going for the whole time—slender, ass-kicking, David Boreanaz screwing— but little did I realize that my big-boned, straight-A, virginal high school self was not one to be compromised at this time in my life—even had I got the pants right.

1- me lever tôt;

2- attendre l'autobus;

States of Consciousness
There are two general types of states, ordinary and non-ordinary. Virtually

States of Consciousness

There are two general types of states, ordinary and non-ordinary. Virtually all human beings have access to ordinary states of consciousness. These include: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep states. The waking realm is that of our everyday relative world. The dreaming realm consists of images, visions, and emotions. The deep sleep realm consists of formlessness, and provides one type of access to the causal spirit.32

Non-ordinary experiences include things such as meditative experiences, drug-induced experiences, peak experiences, near-death experiences, and psychotic experiences.33 These major states are available to human beings at virtually any stage of growth. The way in which those states are experienced and translated depends on the stage of development of the person having the non-ordinary experience.34 These states are available for anyone to experience at any time. States of consciousness are fleeting. They arise and they dissipate. States are temporary unlike stages of consciousness which are permanent.35

Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia often seek treatment to relieve symptoms associated with altered states of consciousness. These altered state experiences include auditory and visual hallucinations—as well as spiritual emergence/emergency, psychosis, and paranoia. There is a small grain of truth in the schizophrenic experience. Some people are authentically plugged into subtle state realms. In schizophrenia, the self does not filter out subtle realm experiences in the way that it should. Sometimes people with schizophrenia get flooded by these subtle realm experiences –some of which are very authentic. The integrally informed therapist acknowledges and validates these aspects of subtle truth in the client’s experience. The client usually interprets these subtle state experiences narcissisticly, where there is already a great deal of interior wounding that usually, but not always, occurs with schizophrenia. These subtle state experiences need to be looked at from higher levels of complexity. The integrally informed therapist interprets these experiences with the client at the ethno- or world-centric perspective.

Stages of Consciousness

Stages represent the actual milestones of growth and development.36 The Integral Model views development through stages of consciousness beginning with pre-personal to personal to transpersonal levels or stages of development.37 Integral Theory acknowledges over 100 developmental models across all developmental disciplines and cultures. The synthesis of all these developmental models has produced what appears to be the most comprehensive developmental model to date. Stages of consciousness are not linear, rather this evolutionary process envelops as it moves from one stage to the next. As the individual transcends his previous stage of development, he includes it in the next developmental stage. Dysfunction in either the differentiation or integration process of a stage provides the opportunity for the development of pathology.

Pathology can occur at each stage of development and to varying degrees. Schizophrenia is hypothesized to correlate with what appears to be an early developmental fragmentation. Schizophrenia can have origins in any of the four quadrants. Primarily, the etiology appears to be in the Upper-Right quadrant. The integrally informed therapist can do an AQAL (all quadrants, all levels, all lines, all states, all types) analysis to assess risk factors in any of the elements of the AQAL matrix. And the greater the number of risk factors of a particular kind, the greater the likelihood of what we recognize as schizophrenia will occur. It is important to assess the developmental level of one’s client accurately to develop a treatment plan to meet the client where he is. By identifying the developmental level at which the client has fragmentation, the therapist has some foundational knowledge to inform their overall treatment plan.

"I'm the WIE editor that you are referring to and I think my comments are being distorted in fascinating ways! If we want to create something new, develop as men and women beyond what we know to fully embody integral, we're not going to do so by dragging along our concepts from the past--like "masculine" and "feminine." If these terms actually mean agency and communion, we should say so. The polarity and sense of opposition that those terms describe come from modern consciousness--which is far from integral. What would integral consciousness look like coming through a human being who happens to be female? Male? That's my inquiry--and I'm saying that we actually don't know yet. We have to live into it and find out, letting go of limiting ideas that are rooted in the past (the Victorian past, to boot) and that so often conflate masculine (primarily meaning agency) and male, feminine (often meaning communion) and female.

And loooooong before there were these notions of masculine and feminine, human beings were happily procreating. You don't need these modern binary concepts in order to do that!

My Response (cross-posted from www.integrallife.com)

"Essences

Hi Elizabeth,

I'm glad that you responded to my post. Do you agree that masculine and feminine are energetic essences that both men and women possess? And it's these essences (when polarized with one another, not in an oppositional way, but more like magnetism) that creates sexual polarity or attraction that facilitates two human bodies coming together?

I find this to be a fascinating discussion. And am open and curious on your perspective here.

When you say...

"If we want to create something new, develop as men and women beyond what we know to fully embody integral, we're not going to do so by dragging along our concepts from the past--like "masculine" and "feminine.""

Are you suggesting that we not transcend AND include as we grow and develop into higher stages of consciousness?

The way I see it is that masculine and feminine types are prominent at every level of development, whether egocentric, ethnocentric, or worldcentric. So the pertinent inquiry seems to be, at an Integral level of development, how do masculine and feminine types manifest, look, feel, experience, and engage the world, others, and self?

Looking Forward: Justifications for an Integral Model

Looking Forward: Justifications for an Integral Model

The biopsychosocial model has been strongly criticized by many who strictly subscribe to the medical model. The medical model views schizophrenia as an organic disease and thus, should be treated with medications. Kevin Gournay has reported research findings in this area in an article titled “New Facts on Schizophrenia.”22 He asserts that although social and psychological factors are important in determining outcome and quality of life for people with schizophrenia, the condition is essentially a brain disease. The psychiatry movement does not include in its framework the psychological, social, and cultural aspects that effect clients diagnosed with severe mental illness. A map that only addresses the biology of the individual living with schizophrenia is a partial map that results in partial treatment.

As it is partial, the medical model runs into difficulty on a number of levels. Psychiatrists frequently try to treat unwilling clients. This might be attributed to the client’s “lack of insight,” common to those diagnosed with schizophrenia. But the decision to refuse medication can seem rational in light of the potentially devastating side effects, and the conflicting evidence of their efficacy. The list of side effects alone is enough to make clients reluctant.23 The list includes Parkinsonism, restlessness and sluggishness, tardive dyskinesia, and a massive range of other effects including anticholinergic, sensitivity reactions, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction.24

Those in the biopsychosocial camp strongly criticize the strictly medical approach as a narrow and limited approach to a living, breathing human being. The biopsychosocial model claims to be holistic in that treatment focuses on the biological, psychological, and social aspects of the individual. However, this model fails to include many aspects of the schizophrenics reality. For one, the biopsychosocial model does not address the very real spiritual aspects of this disorder. Many individuals with schizophrenia experience subtle realm states. Altered states are an extremely important and controversial topic in regard to schizophrenia. The biopsychosocial, model, although much more inclusive than the strict medical model, does not take into account or even mention subtle state experiences and the debate over spiritual emergence versus spiritual emergency. Also, clients seemed to be “plugged” into the biopsychosocial approach as though hey were some stagnant variable—never changing, always the same. Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia are as unique and complex as any other living being. These individuals are often more complex due to their psychological condition. It does not seem rational to treat every client
diagnosed with schizophrenia in the same way. Medications, psychotherapy, and skills training techniques do not and will not work for every client. Treatment should be tailored according to biological, psychological, social, and cultural strengths and weaknesses.

A new approach that includes the biological, psychological, social, and cultural aspects of an individual, as well as developmental stages, states of consciousness, lines of development, and even spirituality, is the Integral model. The Integral model, developed by Ken Wilber, offers a more comprehensive, balanced, and inclusive approach to the treatment of schizophrenia.

We all have shadows, or disowned, repressed, dissociated parts of ourselves, and as we grow and develop from one stage to the next, and even as we grow into higher stages of development, a simple fact remains -- the shadow does not go away, but rather follows us as we ascend into the higher reaches of self. Is it possible that certain types of shadow qualities are more probable to arise at certain levels of development? When we apply this question to the integral or teal level of development, what types of shadow material will we generally encounter in both ourselves and others? When we have the courage to take an honest view of ourselves, and as we learn more about and live an integral life, what shadow tendencies do we see? Let’s explore, with a light heart and hand, the general flavors of shadow material that we may be grappling with specifically once we acquire an Integral awareness. See Figure 1. Two specific shadow manifestations that can potentially arise with Integral awareness, at the teal level of development, can be called the “integralexpert” and the “1st tier allergy.”

Figure 1. Wilber/Combs Lattice

We do not necessarily need to understand the Integral approach (or this chart) for our center of gravity to be stationed at teal. With that said, once we learn the Integral model, in all of its dimensions, we can often come away feeling like we now fully understand everything. Comprehending the Integral model helps us feel as though we can find a place for everything and anything we come across, both within and without, which is truly wonderful -- but it can easily begin to eclipse our relationship with the Mystery, with the Great Unknown. Here, it is possible for the “integral expert” shadow to manifest. This shadow quality can actually inhibit our growth and development. For instance, if we feel that we know everything, why would we continue to explore how the Integral model manifests in real time? How is it possible to approach the mystery of existence from beginner’s mind? How can we let the grace of Spirit fall into us if we are closed to new possibilities arising? We want to be aware that the potential for this “integral expert” shadow to arise is very real and to notice how it manifests. This is no fault of the Integral approach, but an issue of translation on the part of the practitioner. Once we are integrally informed, there seems to be a tendency to feel like we know everything, while Integral wisdom simply suggests a few parameters to help honor everything we CANNOT know...

While it is true that “cognition is necessary but not sufficient” to grow into higher stages of consciousness, many of us tend to step off the developmental ladder once the mind is properly satiated. And what can satiate a thirsty mind more than Integral theory? Again, this is not a fault of the theory. For many, understanding cognitively the Integral approach seems to replace the need for true state training. We cognitively grasp the existence and importance of states. We are even cognizant of how they unfold in a stage-like progression, moving from gross to subtle to causal to nondual. See figure 1. What occurs is that we truly and rather innocently mistake the map for the territory. We can often find ourselves and others more interested in talking about practice, rather than actually engaging practice on a regular basis. We can be quick to judge without actually experiencing, first hand, these topics that so fascinate and intrigue us. There is a tendency to fall victim to the “talking school” or become “armchair” philosophers -- meaning, we have a conceptual understanding, a cognitive understanding, but this understanding is not grounded in any real world experience, not grounded emotionally, experientially, socially, or relationally. This can be applied to much more than state training of course, and this is used as only one of many examples of how this “integral expert” shadow quality may arise.

In extreme cases, the “integral expert” shadow can actually manifest itself in a way where people begin to misuse the Integral model to disengage from the world, to hide from life, negating all responsibility. For example, if we are approached by someone who has feedback about our behavior, or how we have shown up in a meeting, or during an exchange, one response that seems to reflect this “integral expert” shadow quality is “you should 3-2-1 that”. We may not neccesarily say this outloud, but there is a tendency to internally experience this and so we brush off feedback -- justifying ourselves by thinking “this person is just projecting onto me.” Instead of actually receiving, what could be very helpful feedback, we actually push it away. What is ironic here is that we actually push feedback away by using the 3-2-1 process instead of using the 3-2-1 process to go deeper into the feedback that was so graciously offered. What the Integral model invites, encourages and almost demands from us to do is actually participate in the world more, for the simple fact that we do have a greater understanding and awareness -- not to use the tools of the model to hide or turn away from manifest reality. Learn it, live it, apply it... That is what the Integral approach calls us to do in every moment.

Another shadow quality that may arise at the teal level of development can be called the “first tier allergy”, which is the general resistance to participating with all structures prior to teal. This often shows up as mistaking the idea that people can be color coded according to the developmental model as seen in Figure 1. We are all probability waves, as Kohlberg points out -- the probability of finding a particular behavior at a particular time tends to follow the 25-50-25 rule. But often too many of us walk around dismissing people as being “so totally green” or “way too orange”. With these strong judgements, we tend to cut ourselves off from 95% of the world. Elitism is fine -- because everyone is invited, snobbery is not. All too often we come off as Integral snobs when we use developmental schemes as a way to judge others and ultimately ignore them simply because they are not inhabiting the same developmental space that we are. One of the major benefits of Integral awareness is that we can act as developmental wizards, understanding that each and every level of development is utterly needed and appropriate, that we can locate within ourselves all of the levels of first tier, and realize that everyone has the right to be at any stage they are stationed at. This is a Upaya, or a skillful means of the model -- one that could potentially help the world tremendously in a number of areas from politics to spirituality, education to business, ecology to healthcare. The importance of understanding where someone is stationed developmentally is not to judge them and write them off completely, but rather to inform us so that we can then choose the best way to interact with this person to have the best possible outcome. This outcome is understanding. And an understanding that then translates into action in the world on the part of the person we were just engaging. Imagine if we were to touch one person a day with the implications of the Integral approach? The possibilities are endless.

Of course the “expert” and “allergy” can manifest at each developmental stage and these are generally a part of the growth process. As we grow from one stage to the next we tend to dis-identify with the stage we previously inhabited. Another way to say this is that we make our previous subject, object -- we turn our 1st-person experience into a 3rd- person experience. During that process, it is almost certain that we can acquire an “allergy” (or an addiction, but that's another blog post) to our previous level of development. Once we grow into a higher stage, it is also possible that with a deeper and wider understanding of self, we can feel as “expert” to our previous self. The difference at the integral or teal level of development is that the “expert” and “allergy” of the growth process in first tier, has the potential to actually turn into shadow qualities. We now have greater vision and responsibility to recognize the “integral expert” and “1st tier allergy” shadows and to work with these repressed aspects of self. Fortunately, the Integral model not only includes, but encourages us to work with our shadow traits. The 3-2-1 process is a great place to start.

Also, Rory was planning on making a new igloo, but lost the plans while he was making paper boats. As he said, "I got about as carried away as a marshmallow cooked with jet fuel." He accidentally folded the plans into a boat and lost it. So Rory's asking for your help to find the plans. The scavenger hunt begins Aug 8.

In other news: Rockhopper also comes back on the 8th! Wonder what he'll bring on his ship this time..

Change Lessons from Corporate Mergers and the Movies!

Blending your Teams…

I remember standing in the lunch room at our corporate headquarters back in 1986 during our acquisition orientation and having an informal conversation with Roy Vagelos, then CEO of Merck & Co., Inc. and listening to him say he hoped we would blend our two companies well together and think of our products and personal blending of people as one. He went on to share that during the early years of the Merck Sharp and Dohme merger into the one company Merck, he experienced what he had continued to hear during his term at Merck. Instead of people referring to the merged products as Merck products, in the halls he would hear people saying “oh that’s a Sharp and Dohme product” or “oh, that’s a Merck product”. He wanted our acquisition of our largest competitor to be a blending from the start with no lines of division between people or products. I can’t say that it happened immediately; it did happen and it was a result of a shift of focus to the customer and in your case it would be the patient. The leaders set the example, created processes for inter-development and cross-training and set goals and expectations with measurable outcomes. The processes helped the transition work well and resulted in record breaking sales and incredible personal and professional development, ecstatic customers and innovations.

From the movies - Yours, Mine, and Ours is a silly comedy about the ultimate blended family. The first movie (1968) features Helen North played by Lucille Ball who marries a widower named Frank Beardsley played by Henry Fonda. They have 18 children between them, and what takes place in the movie is the “not so typical” situations you can face with blending people together who have other pre-set ideas and thoughts about how things work in a family. It is a whacky demonstration of how resistance might get in the way of making things work harmoniously and how personalities, ways of being and differing ideas can challenge the best in us. What we witness is a series of events that are comical and frustrating and yet in the end, a "happily ever after” story is created as harmony results. This might be a good film to recommend as you experience major changes in your practice, merge with another or are just beginning and want to know what fun you could experience!

Examples such as these demonstrate that there are stages (forming, storming, norming and performing) your team will go through as you introduce change, and the more that you can embrace that there will be some challenges, the easier it will be to focus on the results you desire. By setting objectives and measurement guidelines you can track your progress and celebrate your successes.
