So much of addiction is learning that it’s not going to be easy to give it up and the only way

So much of addiction is learning that it's not going to be easy to give it up and the only way to truly conquer an addiction is through self-healing. This is a common theme throughout our studies in this class and is exemplified in Eat, Pray, Love in the quote where GIlbert talks about not being able to meditate, she says: "This morning, though, instead of fighting it, I just stopped. I gave up. I let myself slump against the wall behind me. My back hurt, I had no strength, my mind was quivering." This is related to other authors who went back on the path of addiction like Wurtzel and Knapp who realized that quitting was harder than giving up and giving themselves to the addiction.

Once an addict is able to get over their addiction, they can find great self-healing. This is true with authors such as Frey who was able to self-medicate through his readings of the Tao Te Ching and Knapp who was able to heal herself through the help of others in Alcoholics Anonymous. One of the greatest moments in Eat, Pray, Love is when Gilbert is able to resist temptation and spend the night alone. She says: "I finally felt it again-that specific, constant, clear sky, unrelated to anything, never shifting, nameless and changeless perfection of my own happiness. This happiness which is better, truly, than anything that I have ever experienced anywhere else on this earth."

Two authors that have seemingly very different writing styles, can be, in reality, rather similar. William S. Burroughs, author of "Naked Lunch," uses a very irrational writing style and is also very irrational in his thoughts. He once said that the stories in "Naked Lunch" could be read in any order, meaning there is no beginning nor end. His writing technique seems similar to painter Jackson Pollack's style of art. Both readers of Burroughs and lovers of Pollack can make their own interpretations of what is painted or written in terms of addiction. In Pollack's abstract paintings there are many layers that can be put on the canvas in any order that can express his idea much like Burroughs. The irrational demeanor of Burroughs can be compared to the irrational thoughts and feelings of Wurtzel in "More, Now, Again."

Although Wurtzel's style of writing seems very rational and explanatory, her thoughts and feelings are irrational much like Burrough's thoughts. Wurtzel's writing technique can be compared to George Seurat's painting "Sunday Afternoon on the Grand Jatte." This painting uses pointilism and gives the illusion that the painting is fluid brush strokes rather than the mindless dots that it is in actuality. Wurtzel's irrationality is like the dots in Seurat's painting because, from a distance, it looks put together but at a closer glance, her thoughts are less cohesive and much more jumbled than it may appear.

Like Wurtzel and Burroughs, there is no end. There is only stew.

The ripple effect of addiction can affect a person at any age, but people are most impressionable when the addiction is held close to home. When a child is young, those are the years that they learn simple guidelines to live by based off their parents and relatives. If the members of their family are addicts, then addiction becomes a norm and skews their perception about how people behave.

Aside of the influence of family, adolescents constantly want the approval of their friends and thus the ripple effect can help the addiction spread to others. For example, if the "cool people" in middle and high school smoke cigarettes, a teenager might seek to belong and then begin to smoke. This ripple effect, also known as peer pressure, is one of the most heavily influencing devices in most American schools. Everyone seeks acceptance and therefore can easily give in to peer pressure.

In college, most habits are already ingrained in student's lifestyles but they can be exacerbated through the wide use and acceptance of abusive substances like cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol available on a college campus. We feel that addictions are more likely to expand and grow in this environment where students start defining who they are and addictive tendencies can be part of their personal definiton.

After college, this ripple effect can take over into so many different branches of one's life from friends to co-workers to even family and thus the ripple effect starts over again.

1. "Colt 45" by Afroman

"Colt 45 and two zig-zags, baby that's all we need. We can go to the park after dark and smoke some tumbleweed." This song shows the immense love for the use of drugs and the disregard for any pain that they could feel from it.

2. "Forever Young" by The Youth Group

"Let's dance in style, let's dance a while. Heaven can wait, we're only watching the stars. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Are you going to drop the bomb or not? I wanna be forever young." Most drug addicts don't think about the future at all and live for the moment today.

3. "Smoke Two Joints" by Sublime

"Smoke two joints in the morning, I smoke two joints at night. I smoke two joints in the afternoon 'cause it makes me feel alright. I smoke two joints in time of peace and two in time of war. I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints and then I smoke two more." This song shows that the narrator of the song goes after his addiction before anything else in life and finds all enjoyment from his use.

4. "Let's Get Fucked Up" by Start Trouble

"Let's get fucked up. Gimme a cup, I'll drink 'til I throw up. Ahhhh. Alcohol, my only friend." This also shows that there are certain people that don't realize the reprocussions of their actions.

5. "Sandstorm" by DJ Darrude

There are no lyrics, but that's the point. The techno beat and the music is the expression of the euphoria that you feel with the music and when using.

Thesis: Artists use songs to express their love for addictions. These songs portray addictions as positive rather than negative things.

William S. Burroughs, the author of "Naked Lunch", expresses an interconncetedness between addiction and art. In "Naked Lunch", he illustrates this connection of addiction and art using sex as an artwork. Art is something that expresses passion and throughout the different vignettes in the novel, sex is shown as a very passionate work. Many characters throughout the book want to make art through the use of sex and use their bodies as a canvas. One example is when Naked Mr. America exclaims: "My asshole confonds the Louvre! I fart ambrosia and shit pure gold turds! My cock spurts soft diamonds in the morning sunlight!" In this quote, he is showing that his skills and abilites at sex are greater and more valuable than many of the greatest works of art in the Louvre. The different parts of the book in which sex is described are in scenes that are extremely intense including the vignette entitled "A.J.'s Annual Party." In this vignette, a movie is described that shows intense and vivid emotion through the actions of the characters Johnny, Mary, and Mark. Actions such as the hanging of Johnny in which Mark snaps his neck then preceded by Mary ravishing Johnny's dying body as she gnaws away at his face and genitals evokes strong imagery and emotion.

Burroughs art is dark and aggressive which is expressed throughout the novel with the varying characters such as Benway, Mark, Mary, Johnny, and others.

Question 1: Do you fill the void that Sonny claims you do, or do you feel it is more or less like ju

Question 1: Do you fill the void that Sonny claims you do, or do you feel it is more or less like just a fill in?

Sonny's dependence on me is clear in that he is more emotionally stable when I am in his life. Both playing music and hearing it is more than filling Sonny's heroin deficit in that he feels in control in our relationship. He can always rely on the stability of our relationship; I'm always there for him.

Q2: What effect do you think you have had on Sonny's life?

I've been more understanding of him than his brother and allowed him to express his hardships through me. I am a constant in his life and make him feel better about himself. In the end, I am responsible for reconciling the relationship between Sonny and his brother. I am also omnipresent: "They were not about anything very new. He and the boys up there...find new ways for us to listen" (24). Also, I am "the only light we've got in all this darkness" (24).

Q3: Why do you think Sonny's brother is less appreciative of you?

Sonny's brother doesn't understand music is more than a career. I am a source of comfort and hope in Sonny's life, a connection that his brother cannot empathize with since there is nothing in his life that fills his voids. Sonny has tried several instruments before finding his "fit;" he had to seek out music rather than it finding him. Sonny's brother, however, has never even bothered to look.

Q4: Do you think your relationship with Sonny can be universalized?

Yes, my relationship with Sonny was one of support and comfort. Music can arouse strong emotions out of humans because it is so dynamic and easy to associate with emotional moments. Even though the roles of music are variable, my constant purpose is to evoke emotion and create a connection with those who listen. I have a special bond with those who create me because they are the ones who understand my purpose most fully.

In Aristotle's "Poetics" he explains that "suffering is an action that involves destruction or pain" (19). The main theme of "Sonny's Blues" is suffering that is brought upon by the environment of those in Harlem. There are two types of people in the narrative's environment: those who struggle to get out of the suffering or those who give up and give in to the suffering. In "Sonny's Blues," there are many suffering relationships but the one relationship that encompasses all of the mentioned sufferings is that of Sonny and heroin. Sonny's relationship with heroin was not only his way of giving into the suffering but it also caused further suffering with his relationship with his brother. A specific quote that emphasizes the way that heroin affected the destruction of Sonny's relationship with his brother is "So I got mad, and then he got mad, and then I told him that he might just as well be dead as live the way he was living. Then he stood up and he told me not to worry about him anymore in life, that he was dead as far as I was concerned" (16). When Sonny's brother is talking about "the way he was living" he is talking about his addiction to heroin. This fight exemplified how the drug is taking over his life and ruining the family dynamic. During the fight, the narrator describes how Sonny has replaced the drug and his accomplices as his actual family.Later in the story, as Sonny is describing what the drug did to him he has a realization that he knows what he has done is wrong. He also comes to the realization that his "heroin friends" aren't true and that he needs his brother in his life. This realization is seen through the quote, "And I don't know how I played, thinking about it now, but I know I did awful things, those times, sometimes, to people. Or it wasn't that I did anything to them--it was that they weren't real" (21). This scene shows Sonny admiting that he was a cause of suffering to others and the drug only fueled this action. All of these relationships and types of suffering arose from the fact that his relationship with heroin overshadowed his other relationships.
