"What I write in my journal tonight is that I'm weak and full of fear...I'm terrified that I will never really pull my life together." (Gilbert 54)

"...the mind is restless, turbulent, strong and unyielding. I consider it as difficult to subdue as the wind." (Gilbert 131)

Every addict comes to a point of realization, whether vocalized or not, that he or she is helpless. The initial feeling of weakness grows into a fear of the inability to ever fully recover. The addict is no longer just afraid to die, but afraid to live. Gilbert uses writing as a means of recovery, and it serves as her release from the demands that her addiction puts on her. Though the mind is difficult to subdue, Gilbert manages to capture her thoughts through words as seen in her writing. Each book that we've read, the authors have talked about the inner struggles between their desires and what they need to survive. Gilbert's conversational style is a reflection of her honest nature in sharing the struggles of a turbulent life.

A Million Little Pieces

James Frey

(BACK):

James Frey's A Million Little Pieces is "The most lacerating take of drug addiction since William S. Burroughs' Junky." - The Boston Globe

"The life of an Addict is always the same. There is no excitement, no glamour, no fun. There are no good times, there's no joy, there's no happiness. There's no future and no escape. There is only obsession. In all-encompassing, fully enveloping, completely overwhelming obsession." - James Frey

Frey's vivid account of a life full of drugs and recovery is a cornerstone of twenty first century addiction literature. Much like hie predecessor, William Burroughs, Frey leaves nothing to the imagination, and his raw and realistic descriptions keeps the reader wanting more. The subject of addiction becomes an obsession for not only the author but the reader.

-Elizabeth Wurtzel, More, Now, Again

Writing is a common means of expression. It allows the writer to put thoughts into words that can be seen and read by both the author and the reader. Caroline Knapp and Elizabeth Wurtzel each use writing as a conduit for self healing. By reflecting upon their experience with addiction, both women display a clear understanding of their own personal struggles as well as triumphs. The first step of AA is realizing that you are not in control and your life has become unmanageable. In order to come to this realization, one must be honest with him or herself, and transparency is characteristic of the authors in each of these novels.

According to Harvard University Eating Disorders Center “twenty-five percent of women with eating disorders also suffer from substance-abuse problems.” There isn’t only a correlation but also a causation between addictions. One addiction can easily lead to the start of another. In the case of Knapp, she often brings up the issue of control in connection to her alcoholism. At times she seemed to exercise control such as the conscious decision to refrain from drinking at work. In reality, she was a slave to her addictions. She was constantly consumed by thoughts of when, where and how she could drink. Her drinking slowly progressed into anorexia. Her eating disorder offered another false sense of control allowing her to closely monitor what entered her body. ”At heart all addictions are driven by the same impulses and most accomplish the same goals.” For Knapp, anorexia masked her problems with drinking and she believed that while she was focused on eating, her drinking wasn’t out of control.

The ups and downs of needing something so bad that it hurts. Just Like a Pill Pink “You’re just like a pill. Instead of making me better. You keep making me ill.” This line reflects how addiction is not only limited to substances but also relationships. Have you ever needed something so bad you can’t sleep at night? So Yesterday Hilary Duff We picked this song because it symbolizes the recovering addict’s attitude towards recovery. To them, drugs are so yesterday. Addicted Simple Plan “I want it and I nedd it. I’m a dic dic dic ted to you” This song is a representation of an addicted personality. The singer is not addicted to drugs, but rather a special lady. This lady causes the artist to stutter because of her ability to consume his every waking thought. You Don’t know How it Feels Tom Petty “Let’s get to the point. Let’s smoke another joint. You don’t know how it feels to be me.” This is similar to the idea in Sonny’s Blues about the inability for an addict to be understood. There are different sta
ges in the addiction and recovery process. This album encompasses multiple forms of addiction and addiction’s effects on the song writer and the world

Yourself (draft)
"If you with your brilliant mind can carry the project alone, I don't know why you need an Art Advisor at all. (p 116)"

William Burroughs echoes the same ideas as Sadie Plant by crediting artistic ability to an outside influence. So in a sense the drug is the inspiration for the work rather than solely the mind of the artist. In the chapter, "Dr. Berger's Mental Health Hour," the author gives his ideas of the connection between art and drugs. The artistic advisor proclaims that their work of art lacks something. "It lack something, to be specific it lacks health." However, Dr. Berger disagrees that drugs take away from art. He believes that drugs bring something to art that adds a new unattainable dimension. "I got the health!...all the health! enough health for the whole world, the whole fuckin world!!I cure everybody!" Burroughs offers two sides to the idea of the connection between art and drugs.

Aristotle defined suffering as "action that involves destruction or
pain"- pain can be both physical and emotional. The latter is
exemplified in "Sonny's Blues".

"I didn't want to believe that I'd ever see my brother going down,
coming to nothing, all that light in his face gone out in the condition
I'd already seen so many others." (1) Although the narrator isn't in
any physical pain, his disbelief in his brother's failure causes personal
suffering and guilt ifor his brother's short-comings. The relationship
between the narrator and his brother is of a paternal nature. He feels a
strong sense of responsibility to care for and protect his brother. His
suffering is not only caused by his disbelief and sense of guilt but also
his inability to relate to his brother and his own suffering. "I
sensed myself in the presence of something I didn't really know how to
handle, didn't understand." (11) Sonny also suffers through trying to
help his brother understand his own self. They both long to understand
each other, yet cannot seem to see the world through each other's eyes.
