It was for Discobelle. a really cool music blog. they asked me to do a 30 minute mix for their Mixin' It Up feature. You make the mix then write up why you chose each track.

Kish Mauve - Lose Control (Fred Falke Remix)
I found this remix on a blog recently. I pretty much love everything Fred Falke does, for that matter all the things Alan Braxe does too. Their production is leaps ahead of everyone else.
So here's a great Alan Braxe remix of Kelis. Got this one off a mate ages ago. Genius. I'm sure if I was to ever be a DJ and play this one out (as they say) it would literally blow up the dancefloor with things flying off the hook all over the place. I particularly like the lead synth that comes in just as the rap finishes and the chorus begins. it's little touches like that that make Alan Braxe so good.

Rio - Race Is Set (Part II)
When i was working sourcing music for ads I found this track on someone's myspace and followed it all the way to Beautycase Records in Germany. Absolutely brilliant. with synths that remind me of Prototype by Rex The Dog, which unfortunately was too slow to mix in here but worth checking out.

Tiga - (Far From) Home (Digitalism Remix)
Another track I found through my old job. Got the ep with about 6 mixes on. The DFA remix is pure joy.
A few weeks later I went to see Jackson and his computer band at Fabric and Digitalism were playing just after him. it was mental. I'd never heard so many bit crunched basslines side chained to hell.

Surkin - Radio Fireworks
I love the simplicity of Surkin's work. just raw dance tapped straight from the glands of daft punk

Kavinsky - Testarossa (SebastiAn Remix)
The Ferrari man remixed by the guy that brought us Ross Ross Ross. I know it's old, but how could i not include it. Ross x3 pretty much changed my life. that's the whole reason I got into Ed Banger Records. And the whole reason I produce my tracks the way I do. That and Jackson and His Computer Band.

Felix Cartel - L'Amour
Another track I found on a blog recently. Loved the bassline immeadiately. there's something of a boys noize to it. I can imagine all kinds of shit happening on the dance floor if this one's dropped firmly in the club

My flatmate played me Fuckin' Frog a few months ago so I bought the album, which is fantastic. really dirty with some great remixes from boys noize and hystereo (whose 2005 album corporate crimewave is a must have)

Heavy Rotation - Run For Your Life (Diamond Cut Instrumental)
This track takes a swift glance at the 80s. and then takes the reverb off the drums and realizes it sounds better like that! great melodies in this one. was going to try to mix in Europa by Bob Sinclair but wanted to whack the next one in more.

The Presets - This Boy's In Love
Oh my god. You need the new Presets album. It's tonnes better than the first, and I loved that one!
this track is amazing. gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Really reminiscent of so many golden 80s tunes with that piano riff. Something Vince Clark could have written if he'd been so inclined. Makes me feel like I'm going mental in a gay techno circa 1990.

Revolte - Blackout
A new guy to my ears. Really Justice/SebastiAn. Whatever...it's great. I'm definitely getting the album.

Bumblebeez - Rio
A great album my Press people gave me. I must say this is the best track off the album, but it is pretty good despite its similarity with Basement Jaxx.

Mr Oizo - Nazis (Justice Remix)
I don't i need any words to describe this one. crazy remix for a crazy dude. When that bassline drops I can't help but thrust my pointed hand into the air. Despite sitting here in my bedroom with murder she wrote playing silently on the tv behind me. I know...I'm a loser.

I've been planning for some time now escaping into the forest and building a small house, hunting my own food and living each day like Into the Wild. This expedition I'm planning is a trial of my own spoilt existence and to become one with nature. And to kill everything in me made from this social façade.

Boys Noize is the monicker of a German electro-tech producer and DJ, Alexander Ridha. It is also the name of Ridha's label, Boysnoize Records, which he set up in 2005.

Ridha was born and grew up in Hamburg, Germany. Between the ages of six and fourteen, he practiced piano and drums. At the latter age, he began to purchase records and produced music with programs. At sixteen, he started to produce in a studio with a colleague who would later be known as D.I.M. He taught Ridha engineering over the next five years. When he became 21 years of age, Ridha moved to Berlin.

Under the name Boys Noize, he has released records on French label Kitsuné Music, Tiga's Turbo Records label, and on DJ Hell's International DeeJay Gigolo Records. He has also remixed tracks for Tiga, Para One, Feist, Kreeps and Depeche Mode, as well as popular remixes of British indie anthems "Banquet" by Bloc Party and "Everyday I Love You Less and Less" by Kaiser Chiefs. Boys Noize's tracks and remixes are played by DJs such as Erol Alkan, SebastiAn, 2 Many DJ's, Mat Payne, Tiga and Justice.

Alex Ridha has also released EPs under the names 909d1sco and Kid Alex.

Boys Noize's released his debut album "Oi Oi Oi" in September 2007. The first single from the album is titled "Don't Believe The Hype", and features two remixes by Surkin.

schon wieder franzosen? die neuen daft punk? meinetwegen, so lange die musik abgeht. und das tut sie. gewaltig. mittlerweile ja auch als v2.0 mit bonus-cd erhältlich, bietet das album jetzt neben den hits cocotte und hands of a stranger auch jede menge remixe, zum beispiel von boys noize und für die scissor sisters.

A convite do Loff (o qual agradeço desde já!) venho aqui propor uma possível lista dos melhores álbuns de 2007 (eu sei que vai ligeiramente atrasada mas também se os Óscares podem ser em Fevereiro qual é o problema?!). 12º Oceansize – “Frames”

Uma banda do tamanho do oceano em termos de complexidade lírica e intensidade instrumental, é talvez uma boa forma de os descrever. Rock ora progressivo, ora melancólico, para degustar lentamente ao som das ondas. Embora não atingido a mestria que foi o anterior “Everything Into Position”, é um óptimo álbum, cheios de momentos instrumentais bastante fortes, qual orquestra rock!

11º Porcupine Tree – “Fear Of A Blank Planet”

Rock progressivo, melodia a passear de mãos dadas com guitarradas, a cantarolar coisas com significado (as boas letras são uma constante no álbum). “Anesthetize”, o ponto alto do disco, são 17:40 minutos a vaguear por diversas paisagens sonoras, mudanças de ritmo constantes e refrões sofridos finalizam a composição.

10º Nine Inch Nails – “Year Zero”

Apesar de não ser dos melhores registos de Nine Inch Nails, há que dar mérito ao mentor do projecto, Trent Reznor, pela capacidade de se auto-reinventar e inovar a cada álbum que passa (e principalmente pela coragem em arriscar). Abdicando quase por completo da vertente rock industrial que o tornou um fenómeno, enveredou por caminhos bem mais electrónicos, mas sem nunca perder o norte. Aliás, as ideias bem iluminadas e os pés bem assentes no chão são uma constante ao longo de todas as faixas, inteligentemente interligadas para criar o fim do mundo algures em 2022, como consequência das politicas governamentais do “Sr. Dr.” Bush nos dias de hoje.

9º Blonde Redhead – “23”

Apesar do percurso algo reservado ao longo da última década e meia, esta banda formada em New-York por 2 japonesas e por 2 italianos (e viva a multi-culturalidade!) deu o salto este ano com este disco de número estranho, marcadamente indie-rock (seja lá o que isso for) repleto de guitarras com cheirinho a Sonic Youth (versão post-rock) e pontuado com a voz angelical de Kazu Makino, a dar o mote para um bom registo de canções calmas de fazer dançar a alma (mas só a alma, que o «shoegaze» é isso mesmo). E que venha o 24!

8º Teenage Bad Girl – “Cocotte”

Esqueçam as batidas monótonas do Techno, desprezem os remix’s manhosos da rádio Orbital, livrem-se dos hits comerciais tocados pelos dj’s na discoteca ao fundo da rua, Teenage Bad Girl chegou para abalar o electro e pôr a abanar até a anca mais incauta. Desde o porno informático de “USB Dick (Plug me in)” (sem questionar o teor da letra, para mim é a melhor faixa do álbum) até às frequentes variações de ritmo patentes em todas as faixas, tudo se conjuga num som esquizofrénico e promíscuo difícil de ouvir parado. A menina dança?

7º Feist – “The Reminder”

Doce e melodiosa, assim se caracteriza a voz de Feist, uma mui talentosa singer songwriter canadiana, que se (re-)afirma com um álbum cheio de boas canções para todos os gostos: há desde canções de lágrima ao canto do olho (influência folk em destaque) a músicas divertidas, pop ritmado de estalar o dedo, mostrando como a música pop pode ser tão boa (é verdade, o pop não é só o que passa na Mtv). Guitarra acústica, contra-baixo, xilofone e muitos outros povoam a sonoridade do álbum, mas é sem dúvida o piano o co-autor da maioria das faixas. A ouvir a dois (ou a um e a pensar em dois) numa tarde chuvosa de Outono.

6º Justice – “ † “ (Cross)

Da escola dos Daft Punk (à semelhança dos Teenage Bad Girl, Simian Mobile Disco, Boys Noize, MSTRKRFT, Digitalism, entre outros) estão a reinventar a música de dança, e a provar que os ex-inimigos França e Alemanha são hoje em dia o epicentro da música electrónica. Desde o refrão orelhudo do single “D.a.n.c.e.” (a música do videoclip das t-shirts animadas!) até à guitarrada de “Waters of Nazareth”, passando pelo falsete de “DVNO” e as constantes e confusas mudanças de ritmo em “Genesis”, tudo vale para chamar multidões para as pistas de dança!

5º Battles – “Mirrored”

Será rock? Será música de dança? Será Indie Pop? Não! É a banda mais freakó-roqueira do momento! Mais do que inventar um estilo de música, é inventar um que não é estilo nenhum: bateria pujante, guitarras persistentes, cânticos electrónicos joviais, tudo conjugado para (de)formar o álbum mais inovador de 2007. Como é afirmado no single “Atlas”: “People won't be people when they hear this sound”! Aviso: impossível de ouvir sem bater o pé.

4º Lcd Soundsystem – “Sound Of Silver”

James Murphy é grande. Este senhor, apesar de discreto em visibilidade e atitude, transborda em exuberância no que toca a criar música de dança, tornando-a interessante e com propósito sem deixar de fazer aquilo que é suposto fazer, ou seja, pôr pessoas a dançar frenética e descontroladamente: quais movimentos pré-programados para uma pista de discoteca house, aqui solta-se a franga! Funk, rock, punk, electro minimal, tudo se conjuga num cocktail repleto de suor e promiscuidade, pronto a ser servido com muitas substâncias ilícitas à mistura e de preferência com uma bola de espelhos por perto. Por cima da batida techno em repeat, há guitarras deixadas à solta, baixos fortes, sintetizadores e pianos teimosos (no caso do piano, principalmente em “All My Friends”, uma das melhoras faixas do disco), tudo a lutar por um lugar ao sol sob a mão sempre controlada de Murphy (ao vivo este controlo estrito intensifica-se), criando músicas sempre em crescendo de intensidade, com os decibéis (e a nossa sanidade) a rebentarem cada vez mais, mesmo quando pensamos que mais já não é possível. Nunca o divertimento foi tão esquizofrénico.

3º Radiohead – “In Rainbows”

Bem, por onde começar…que esta é das mais importantes bandas da década de 90 e da actualidade, isso ninguém tem dúvidas. Que o álbum “The Bends” foi marcante para a história da música e que o “OK Computer” é uma obra-prima inexplicável, também não. Então e será que o novo álbum acompanha a genialidade que estes rapazes de Oxford nos vêm habituando? Apesar de não atingir o nível de “OK Computer” (mas também não era isso que pedia) este é sem dúvida um bom conjunto de canções. As guitarras com gentileza à lá Pink Floyd continuam, os devaneios electrónicos também, mas mais contidos que em registos anteriores, talvez resultado da ressaca do álbum marcadamente electrónico que o líder Thom Yorke lançou o ano passado. Líder este que continua a encantar-nos com a voz sofrida e a atitude alienada de sempre, principalmente em momentos como “Nude”, “All I Need”, “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” e “Reckoner”. Rock progressivo altamente recomendado!

2º Arcade Fire – “Neon Bible”

Depois do fantástico “Funeral” romper com todos os alicerces do rock alternativo, este colectivo canadiano lança mais um disco repleto de óptimas canções, a provar que a casa-mãe do rock alternativo na actualidade está situada no Canadá (que o digam Broken Social Scene, Final Fantasy e muitos outros). O som é composto não só pelas típicas guitarras, bateria, baixo, etc, mas também por piano, muitos violinos, pandeiretas, instrumentos estranhos e até um órgão de igreja! Todos os membros da banda tocam vários instrumentos (é delicioso vê-los a trocar de posições em palco e darem conta do recado em qualquer instrumento), sendo Win Butler o maestro desta «orquestra» e principal autor das letras (sempre com proporções bíblicas). De realçar a completamente transcendente “No Cars Go”, música para ouvir com um arrepio na espinha e de preferência com milhares de pessoas a entoá-la a uma só voz (notar que Arcade Fire são das melhores bandas ao vivo da actualidade por alguma razão!). E tu, já rezaste hoje?

1º The National – “Boxer”

Melancólico e introspectivo. Estas serão algumas das palavras-chaves mais associadas a este fabuloso álbum. Continuando o óptimo trabalho do anterior, Alligator, a banda Nova-iorquina afirma-se agora perante um público mais alargado com um disco pop-rock de qualidade, uma mão cheia de canções ritmadas com guitarras pertinentes e piano bastante presente (e por vezes violinos e até trompete!), sempre acompanhadas por um trabalho na construção de letras cuidado. Nota: vêm com “Mistaken for strangers” e “Fake empire”, duas das melhores canções do ano.

1. Adam Sky vs Mark Stewart 'We Are All Prostitutes (Crookers Remix)' - a hit on all the blogs and easy to see why. Perfect for DJing and what a treat from 1:40 onwards with the build into that amazing hook. Ahhhhh....

2. Cursor Miner 'Skunk Works' - Only discovered this album this year, argh, what have i been missing... Well, this.

3. DatA 'Aerius Light (Kitsune DJ Friendly Edit)' - Lifted from the forthcoming Kitsune Maison 5 compilation. French genius.

4. David E. Sugar 'Oi New York, This Is London' - David E. Sugar is doing it for London here... Wasn't amazed with the remixes but the original is fantastic. Check the Greco Roman club night this is associated with...

5. DJ Mehdi 'Signature (Thomas Bangalter Edit)' - Everything about this track is great. Made the right decision in putting this edit on the album, which is amazing and you should check out. The 'wobbly' bit about 2:30 is superb. Check the video below (the guy in it looks like a cross between Martin Fowler and Jack Penate!).

6. Fancy 'What's Your Name Again? (Busy P Remix)' -  So heavy. So good. So many confused looks when i first started playing this at the beginning of the year.

7. Felix Cartel 'Moss vs. Tree' - A surprising choice perhaps, but a fantastic track which remained on playlists throughout 2007 for me and continually played out.

8. Klaxons 'Gravity's Rainbow (Soulwax Remix)' - A plethora of choices of tunes from both Klaxons and Soulwax to choose from but this mix has everything good about both these artists. The constant almost tribal nature of the track is unique and something no-one else but Soulwax coud have come up with when remixing this track.

9. Mel Merio 'Domino Dancing (Extended Club Mix)' - who'd have thought a Pet Shop Boys cover would be such a hit. A storming tune that smashes the dancefloor. Everyone loves the 80's really...

10. Partyshank 'Partyshank vs. Yo! Majesty (Shanks Bootleg Mix)' - A bootleg I ripped from another blog site (can't remember which - sorry). This is mental. So much going on. I defy anyone to not dance to this... Partyshank set to be huge in '08.

11. Teenage Bad Girl 'Cocotte (Boyz Noize Rework)' - Again a track that stayed by my side like a faithful dog throughout 2007. More booty bounce going on.

12. Tepr 'Minuit Jacuzzi (DatA Remix)' - More fantastic French genius. In many ways, the 'Fench' sound is becoming old hat, but when you still get frsh mixes like this, you wonder if it will ever end..

13. Unklejam 'Love Ya (Herve Remix)' - A superb way to end the compilation. The booty bass heard in all the Herve/Sinden etc mixes is very evident. An absolute smash.

The Victorias Secret Fashion show is quite amazing although we europeans have to download it, on the other hand that enables us to fast forward through the Spice Girls comeback. We're gratefull that they let the real show go on while Seal is singing because nobody wants that dude in the way... It's like getting pepper sprayed while watching a porno.

This song reminds me of an old house track, Same Man, by Till West & Dj Delicious, I'm probably losing my mind since they're totally different...
