We haven’t heard much from Justin Timberlake ever since he started dating actress Jessica Biel. There was that Pepsi commercial he was dragged through during this year’s Superbowl; a role in the lackluster Love Guru; a Madonna music video; and some other projects too small to mention.

Now that celebrity gossip bees are buzzing about the Timberlake/Biel garden wedding, fans are worried Justin will never reclaim his throne in mainstream pop entertainment.

Justin followers won’t be crying rivers for long though. He’s been keeping busy while laying low. As the spokesmodel of Givenchy’s new scent “Play,” Justin will also be the face of his William Rast clothing line’s first ever print campaign. Not to mention he's producing a new competitive reality series on MTV called, “The Phone!"

Get as close to Justin as Jessica does and audition for his new MTV show now!

I found this news article online today. It's not a revolutionary concept but will be interesting to see how well they pull it off. MTV have a lot of attitude associated with their brand and they know many of their core audience are heavy mobile users so it makes sense to join the dots. I'd even go as far as saying it's a step backwards from this clever collaboration between MTV and Myspace for the US Presidential elections.

Singer Justin Timberlake is to be the producer for a new reality game show on MTV.

The programme is based on a Dutch production and begins each time with two hidden mobiles ringing in different locations of a big city.

In the MTV show called The Phone, contestants who answer the mobiles will have five seconds to decide if they want to play the game for a cash prize.

A guide on the other end of the line then gives them a mission to complete before time runs out.

MTV executive vice-president Tony Disanto described the show as "genre-busting".

"Reinvention is at the core of what we do, and The Phone does just that. Each week will be an action-packed mini-movie," he added.

Argh! I've been without a phone since Wednesday. I finally got the internet connection (a very very slow connection) back this evening. Comcast is really getting my friggin' (with a Philly accent) nerves. I can make calls but no one can hear me and they can call me but they still can't hear me or the answering machine. I could send smoke signals but buildings seem to be in the way. I think the Amish live closer to one another so they can just walk over. I am certainly not walking the several miles over to Temple University to see what's going on with my hubby.Anyway, I just got Ferdinand the Bull in the mail. It's just a wonderful as I remember. I also got a few other books: So That's What God is Like, Every Man Heart Lay Down, The Village that Vanished, and Off to the Sweet Shores of Africa: And Other Talking Drum Rhymes. I'm still waiting for Lola at the Library. I ordered it weeks ago. Suddenly I'm obsessed with kids books. Am I nesting? Do you do that when you're not pregnant? Maybe I have some weird psychological thing. Every Man Heart Lay Down is one of the best books ever. It's so very sweet. I also really like So That's What God is Like. I really need to stop with book thing (the kids books). But they're so darn cute. I pull them out and look at them and read them to myself- much easier than having a kid I'm sure.

The best way to meet a lot of people and to get people to do work for you is to work a network, but

The best way to meet a lot of people and to get people to do work for you is to work a network, but it's not as easy as you might think. First of all, you can't just go out asking anyone and everyone to refer you to other leaders they know. They won't. They don't want their friends and colleagues sending yahoos to them and so they won't send them to yahoos.

You have two tasks to complete before you can ask someone to share the names of good people that they know with you.

1)

You need to credentialize yourself

. The best way to do this is by getting a referral from someone else the person knows. It really helps. I can't tell you how many times I've had conversations on the phone where I heard the voice of the person I was calling audibly change when I named someone they liked. For example, "Hello there, Ms. Corcoran, I was referred to you by Jennifer M."
"Oh, okay."
It's amazing. Of course, the hard part is winning that first person over without a referral, but you'll figure it out.

2)

You need to establish a relationship

. The most common technique for doing this is a one-to-one, popularized by institution based institutionally oriented Organizing techniques, such as DART. Rather than go into a lot of detail, the main point is to try to meet a person face to face, have a conversation and find some sort of common ground (whether or not it's relevant to the issue you are working).

Once you've accomplished both of these things, you can start asking for people to refer you to other leaders around town. Eventually, you'll have double-referrals and so many referrals you can't keep up.

Notice I didn't mention anything about the issue. The issue is secondary. People get involved in things because they like the people and the culture. The issue is not a very big deal, so long as you've done a decent job of picking one.

The Organizer loves the telephone. The Organizer believes that it is the single most important tool that any Organizer has. Still. Despite the Internet. Better than his feet. It is the best of the old and the new. The Organizer believes this deeply.

The Organizer believes that too many calls is always better than too few.

The Organizer believes you should leave messages but don't expect much out of them.

The Organizer believes in the phone.

Recently, the Organizer was doing some work on the side for a political campaign and calling people on behalf of a political candidates. The people on the list were all unfamiliar. When The Organizer does cold calls, the Organizer believes in using people's first names.

You will often be told when you do these calls that if you use people's first names its disrespectful and you might tick some people off. This is certainly true. Why just a couple weeks ago I was lectured by a 40-something woman about how I had no business using her first name and she hung up.

So use last names, right?

No way.

The Organizer has called the young and the old, the rich and the poor. The Organizer has made cold calls in multiple states under multiple contexts. Sometimes the Organizer modifies his rule for one reason or another, but 95% of the time I prefer the first name. I very seldom make anyone mad by doing it, and everyone always agrees that I get pretty good results out of my cold calls. I'm not the best in the world, but I'm pretty good.

The deal with cold calls: most folks aren't home, but you will reach a handful of people and you've got those first few moments to make the right impression on them. Probably a good 50% of them won't give a stranger on the phone the time of day anyway. Forget about them. The rest are deciding whether or not they have time to talk to you for a minute about their candidate or their issue, and your manner will have a great deal to do with convincing them to talk to you. I definitely find that I get more people to really talk to me when I'm in the right mood for calls. People are judging you based on very intangible qualities, and I find that using the first name gives me a boost in most cases. Not all, but enough to make it worth using.

Like I said, not many people get mad about the first name thing. In fact, I'll take that a step further and contend that I get more time on the phone with people because I approach the calls more informally and casually, in part by using the first name. By using the first name, I don't sound like a salesman (or, worse, a bill collector) and I believe it earns me more air time with the folks I have some chance of getting air time with.

My point is this:

you can use terms of respect if you want, and you won't tick anyone off, but I will contend that you will also lose more folks.

. On the other hand, you can use first names and you will win a few more crucial seconds from people, while they are deciding whether or not to really talk to you. Of course, you'll also tick some of them off. Not many. In fact, you'll probably go weeks without ticking anyone off.

So the question is this, do you want to use the approach that's more effective with more people? Or do you want to use the approach that won't tick anyone off but will also win fewer people over?

We often feel so under fire in this life that sometimes even good news just feels like more work. Say you make a breakthrough in a campaign, a target gives some ground, your people are a little better off. The temptation is to just push on to the next phase, to start marshalling your forces because there is still more to do. Issue a press release and make sure your fundraiser gets it.

Take it from me, though -- you need to pick up your phone and call your leaders. Even if you don't get them all, even if you just leave a bunch of voice mails, it's good. It makes you feel better. It makes them feel better. They'll listen to your message and hear you got the meeting, or that someone got a job, or they hired them back, or your going to get one of your demands, and they will smile and they will probably thank you the next time they see you.

But you'll get ahold of one or two of them. You know you will. Someone is always home. He or she will say how good it is, tell you how they feel and you'll get a chance to organize them a little deeper. You'll remember what the good work is in this work, the real work, and you'll feel better.

It's hard to feel good in this life sometimes, but if you pick up the phone from time to time, just to spread a little news, you'll feel better.

When you're an Organizer, you have to be a bull about people's time. You are teaching people to be empowered, to stand up for themselves, that's the work. Odds are, whatever you're doing is ultimately in their best interest, even if you're sucking them away from TV or beer-pong time.

I say this as if it's how I do it in real life. I don't. Just yesterday I made what amounted to a cold call (someone I'd met randomly on the street and tried to involve) and I made the mistake of asking if they had a minute to talk.

Of course he/she didn't. They didi't know who I was. They had no referrent. Everything about this was weird.

You're thinking: what does it matter? If they don't have a minute then you ask for a time to call back. Or you ask them to call you back.

But, you see, they won't do either. They won't call you back. They won't give you a time to call them back. Ever. I've never known anyone to ever do this, especially not someone I just met, who I just started trying to bring in.

So you can't ask that question. Let them be empowered enough to tell you. Or just bull through their time until you get to your point and you cross that magic boundary where they sort of relax and decide you're okay. It's critically important that you never ask "do you have time to talk." Don't give them an out.

You need to believe they need you. You know you need them. So if you can manage it, don't even rush. Don't hurry anything. Make it conversational and light the whole way through and hopefully they will like talking to you enough to give the work a chance.
