하지만 미국금융위기의 타격을 받은 나라는 미국만이 아니다. 올해 미국의 주가는 18퍼센트가 떨어졌지만 중국은 48퍼센트가 떨어졌다. 러시아는 55퍼센트가 떨어졌다. 미국의 신뢰추락이 분명한데도 아직도 세계 각국의 자금이 불안할 때 찾는 투자대상은 우선 미국 정부가 발행한 채권이다. 금융위기를 맞아 달러 값은 떨어져야 하는데 오히려 오른다, 달러말고 다른 건 더 불안하다는 얘기가 되겠다.

Why do the McCain people think they can get away with this stuff? Well, they’re probably counting on the common practice in the news media of being “balanced” at all costs. You know how it goes: If a politician says that black is white, the news report doesn’t say that he’s wrong, it reports that “some Democrats say” that he’s wrong. Or a grotesque lie from one side is paired with a trivial misstatement from the other, conveying the impression that both sides are equally dirty.
