Er zijn een paar onderwerpen die mij interesseert en ik leuk vind om een stage in te doen.

• Ontwerpen, Analyse en Productie van composiet constructies;
• Vermoeiing en breuk mechanica;
• Aeroelasticity;
• Optimaliseren van constructies;
• Lean manufacturing en Total quality management;
• Marketing en project management.

Als jullie een leuke opdracht in de bovestaande gebieden heeft dan hoor ik het graag. Mijn motivatie brief een resumé kan ik op aanvraag sturen.

Architect Hein de Haan: "Tja, het zijn meestal mensen die veraf staan van de stedelijke cultuur. Een aantal borrelaars in 't Gooi die vooral niet gehinderd door kennis van zaken of de geschiedenis roepen dat de gewelddadigheid zou toenemen. [...] Het is gewoon een stok op de hond te slaan."

Deze week is de meest belangrijke week voor de verenigingen. De nieuwe studenten kiezen aan het eind van de week bij welke vereniging ze gaan zich aansluiten. Omdat daar de toekomst van een vereniging over draait, zijn de studenten leden van de verschillende verenigingen hard aan het werken om nieuwe studenten aan te trekken.

Bij de Roomse Katholieke Jongeren vereniging(RKJ), waarin ik lid ben, waren wij ook gisteren op een kleinschalig manier bezig geweest om nieuwe leden te trekken. In Delft hingen wij een paar borden, ontworpen bij Piet, met de slogan - "Jong/Open/Betrokken/Katholiek" aan de lantaarn palen. Voor de Maria van Jesse kerk stond Helena en ik(zij heeft het meeste werk gedaan) aan de voorbijgaande eerst jaars om folders uit te reiken en hen binnen de kerk te krijgen. Petra en Sijbraand stonden binnen de kerk om interesseerde studenten meer over de vereniging te vertellen. Vincent en Linda waren ook er bij om te helpen.

Later in de avond was ik bij Vincent uitgenodigd bij Linda te eten. Behalve de RKJer's Vincent, Bas, Linda, Helena en ik was er ook Joeka, een vriendin van Helena, en Jeroen. Jeroen is de broer van Edith en Vincent, en hij gaat volgend jaar natuurkunde op de TU volgen. Linda had een heerlijke maaltijd klaar voor ons gemaakt. Er waren salades, Franse stok brood, Griekse Tosti, chips, gehaakt balletjes en een Nederlandse aardappel schotel. De maaltijd was heerlijk.

Na het eten, toonde iedereen op een laptop hun vakantie foto's. Linda liet de foto's over haar vakantie zien. Reden zij met Chris, de penning meester van RKJ, en Vincent met een Trabant door negen Europese landen. De Trabant is van Vincent en is minstens dertig jaar oud. Ongelooflijk dat ze geen probleem met de auto op weg hadden! Jeroen vertoonde zijn foto's die hij in Sydney tijdens de "Wereld Jongeren Dag" had gemaakt. Die zijn online beschikbaar op zijn website www.jeroenpetersfotografie.nl. Bart, wie ook in Australia was geweest en deel nam aan het Wereld Jongeren Dag, ook liet zijn foto's zien. Ze waren allemaal prachtig.

Morgen nog eventjes kalm aan en Donderdag begint het EJW al dus vanaf dan wordt het druk. Tijdens de OWEE komen hier nog enkele aankomend studenten extra slapen dus dat wordt hier extra druk in huis.

Er zijn een paar redenen waarom de kost zo hoog is. Voornaamste is dat ik dit jaar met mijn Master begint. Het Master studie aan de TU Delft kost jaarlijks 8420 Euro in plaats van 2100 Euro die ik tijdens mijn Bachelor betaalde. Aan het einde van dit jaar ben ik ook van plan voor drie maanden met stage te lopen. Ik heb 1800 Euro gerekend voor mijn stage. Levensonderhoud kost valt net onder het 5000 Euro op 4800 Euro. Het is lager dan wat het IND zegt dat je nodig hebt om fatsoenlijk in Nederland te wonen. Het IND adviseert een bedrag van 7200 Euro. Mijn levensonderhoud kost is iets lager omdat ik in een kleine kamer in een boerderij(De Tochtige Koe) woon; na vier jaar wonen in Nederland weet ik ook hoe je zuinig hier kunnen leven. Eind van dit jaar ben ik ook van plan om India te bezoeken. Al ben ik twee jaar thuis niet geweest, en heb ik mijn familie al begonnen te missen. Vanwege hoge benzine prijzen een vlieg kaartje inclusief retour, die twee jaar geleden 540 Euro kost, kost nu in de buurt van 1200 Euro.

Hoe ga ik het allemaal betalen? 6000 Euro krijg ik van de faculteit(Lucht-en Ruimtevaart) als studie beurs. Een bijbaantje dat ik nu heb levert jaarlijks ongeveer in de buurt van 5000 Euro op. Die twee inkomen bronnen zorgen voor 11000 Euro. Het verschil tussen verwachten uitgaven en inkomen voor dit jaar is rond het 4500 Euro. Dit betekent, als ik geen schuld wil raken, de komende zomer fulltime moeten werken.

• Naast de pure technische kant krijg je ook een zeer degelijke wiskundige opleiding (wiskunde is gezien mijn vooropleiding met 8uur wiskunde per week een vakgebied dat mij zeer erg interesseert).
• De TU Delft werkt met veel practica en projecten. Deze hebben het voordeel dat je theorie uit de lessen direct moet toepassen waardoor je veel meer inzicht krijgt in de stof (dit leert toch mijn persoonlijke ervaring uit het secundair onderwijs). En bovendien zorgen ze voor de nodige afwisseling naast de theorie. (Meer informatie over die projecten verneem je zeker nog later dit jaar op deze blog. Stay Tuned!).
• De TU heeft ook zeer nauwe banden met het bedrijfsleven, dit zorgt er natuurlijk voor dat je als student een opleiding krijgt die zeer erg gericht is naar datgene wat bedrijven zoeken.
• Tijdens de opleiding wordt ook geruime aandacht besteed aan "presentation skills". Niet onbelangrijk natuurlijk in het bedrijfsleven. (Dat deze training werkt was ik zelf getuige van op de info-momenten, waar presentaties door studenten steeds zeer verzorgd waren).
• De Opleiding is zeer internationaal gericht. Dit merk je bijvoorbeeld doordat de opleiding van dag 1 in het Engels is.
• Wat natuurlijk ook niet te vergeten is zijn de uitstekende faciliteiten aan de TU en de faculteit aerospace egineering in het bijzonder. enkele voorbeelden hiervan zijn: verschillende windtunnels, prachtige labo's, een vliegtuighal met onderdelen van vliegtuigen die kunnen dienen als studiemateriaal, een eigen jet, een eigen vliegsimulator.
  

Dit alles zorgt toch wel voor een duidelijke meerwaarde aan de opleiding.

Omdat beelden soms meer zeggen dan woorden:

Mijn voorbereidingen voor Delft zijn al een tijdje bezig. In deze post zal ik eventjes schetsen wat reeds gebeurd is. Ik heb in Juli een weekje in Delft gezeten voor een kot te zoeken en inschrijving te regelen.

Om een kot (kamer op z'n Hollands) te zoeken ga je net iets anders te werk dan in België. Ze werken daar namelijk met een systeem dat ze instemmingen noemen. Het komt er op neer dat als iemand zijn kot verlaat de huisgenoten kiezen wie die kamer mag innemen. Dit gebeurt dus op een instemming, daar komt dan iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in die kamer naartoe. En er gebeurt dan dus als het ware een sollicitatie. Op het einde van de instemmingen kiezen de bewoners dan wie dat zij vinden die het best in de groep past.
Op zich is dit een heel tof systeem omdat je op deze manier direct opgenomen bent in de groep en je dus beter thuis voelt. Voor iemand die niet in de buurt woont van delft kan dit natuurlijk een praktisch probleem vormen.
Nuja ik had wel geluk volgens studenten die ik gesproken heb moet je gemiddeld een 8-tal instemmingen lopen voor je een kamer hebt. Maar ik had vanaf de eerste al prijs. Ik heb tot januari een kamer in onderhuur (tijd genoeg dus om een andere kamer te zoeken) prachtig gelegen tussen de TU Delft en het centrum van Delft en vlakbij het station.

Ook mijn inshrijving aan de TU is tijdens die week in orde gekomen. Daarvoor moest ik langsgaan bij het international office (in het hoofdgebouw van de TU) en na een kwartiertje administratief werk had ik mijn toelatingsbewijs tot de TU op zak.

The Loop

Neighborhood library with 50 starter houses on the Javaplein, heart of Amsterdam-East. Building as an urban accelerator.

Vision
A accelerator by decelerate; The neighborhood must especially get a spot where people come together and meet. A meeting-place you can however only create if you seduce people to slow down. Rest in the everyday, urban hectic. I interpret the design assignment therefore as a paradox.

Urbanism: Assume the existing relevance. The Javastraat and 1st of Swindenstraat have both their own dynamics. The proposal is to link the streets and extend to the Flevopark. Because of this arises a street exceeding consistency. At the same time it ensured the anchoring of the Java square in the district.

Urban context
The most important additive to the urban context are the two squares. The first is the Javaplein that passes into my building and service the entry of the library. The other one is for the entry of the apartments. The two squares are framed whit gateways. The most important and largest gateway has been situated at the Javaplein side. The Second has been situated at the Molukkenstraat. The gateway of the apartments has the same language as the gateways of the Javaplein, such as the altitude, but is more intimate.

The library himself has been designed as a loop (no end). Thereby there is continuity in the design symbolic for timelessness, a theme that every library contains. The entrance of the library is on the corner of the Javaplein and the Molukkenstraat and is also the reading-cafe where it's possible to organize readings and exhibitions.

Concept library
The concept for the division of the library contains two routes. The first is the public and fast route, clear vision is important. The route runs at the street side and has a clear (open) relation with the surroundings.

The second route is the concentration and slow route. This route character's itself by quiet study and reading places. By this route you go on adventure trough the library; these have been subdivided by different altitudes, walking bridge, podia and stairs.
The book cupboard is the separation between the two routes.

Because of the enormous overpressure of the gateways (+/- 40m) I have chosen to overstrain the construction whit a bridge construction. They define also the façade.

so....? What does that mean?

It means that sooner than we think, we wont be using petrol or oil anymore. EVER.

We wont need oil to generate electricity, or to run cars, to fuel rockets, to run big machinery in industries.

Emission from petrol powered vehicles wont pollute the air, nor will the heat released by them add (or not, as you will) to global warming.

We wont have any more oil spills ruining our large water bodies. Our marine life and trans-oceanic birds will have a chance after all. So no more oil hurting our wildlife, no more chemical dispersants trying to remove the oil in the oceans but still affecting marine life.

No more power cuts. No more energy crisis. Cleaner water and a cleaner world.

What's more, you dont have to fuel your car everyday :D

An explanation:

It begins with stipulating the `problem'. The problem is a (part) question of the design, or whatever you must determine, to obtain a design (solution).

‘Leave to rest’ means that you withdraw yourself from the process. It is important that thereby the work lies to rest to settle. This can be a couple hour or a couple days, depending on the state of mind.

From that follows that you’re critically study the process. Step; ‘To reflect on’. This means that you search for the depth in the project. Questions which can rise are; Am I studying the right problem? Did I overlook something? How did I come at/ to this problem? Are there similar, reference problems? What will I exactly examine? How did an another one this?

After this you will get started and produce a lot. Marquis, sketches, etc. First try outs, trying everything, ugly marquis, everything can. This will demand a big commitment.

Eventually you take distance and leave your work to rest. This distance is necessary to criticize your own work. `To reflect on' now contents that you work present to others. What do they find of your arguments, choices? This phase helps focusing. It becomes from this point concreter.

During the process several steps back are conceivable. Depending on the progress at determine the problem you can return a step. It is possible that producing also has several stages. (See the arrows)

With the text from the book Eeuwige Schoonheid I see a relation with design tasks. To design you can interpret as telling a tale. The design is a form, such as book, in which the tale of the context, the history, the user and the future comes together. At every design task constantly lay’s the task to search the concept (the tale) of your design. And there by aiming and strive for clarity and concentration on the main points.

Analysis of existing buildings.

This course contains describing the design process in four steps: seeing, recognizing, transforming, producing.

The student is able to develop his knowledge of the programmatic, architectural and typological characteristics of the assignment through study of relevant precedents.

We choose Renzo Piano as architect from which we analyze the repertory. We came to the conclusion that Renzo Piano is a Humanistic architect and important instruments/ themes in his work to achieve this are Genius Loci and Transparency. The argumentation for or thesis is summarized above in a A1 presentation pallet (Dutch).

The main reason for my visit were the annual final presentations for a course on 'Interactive Technology Design'. Students presented a wide variety of prototypes of games, persuasive objects and fitness experiences. Lots of soccer-related designs, which wasn't all that surprising ;) I was most impressed by a 'jealous tree' (can't remember the project name, unfortunately) . In short, the tree detected when people were interacting with other installations, became jealous and then tried to attract attention from visitors. Conceptually I liked the personality aspects of the tree. Aesthetically, for a first prototype the tree looked clean, but still somewhat mysterious.

The most fun to play with were the "soccer mushrooms". A strangely addictive game with little mushrooms just begging to be kicked around... The persuasive powers of shower caps and LED's should never be underestimated, I guess.

I was also very happy to finally see Daniel Saakes' Skin project. A design tool that supports designers in rapid prototyping and exploring materials, textures and prints for their design prototypes. You choose the objects, pictures, textures, skin projects them on your prototype. Simple idea, very useful results. Daniel has been a well-liked guest speaker for the course I'm teaching in Amsterdam, so it was great to get to play with the tool myself.

And after all that I got to talk to Miguel Bruns Alonso about his work on stress and tangible interaction. Very interesting considering I'm setting up a study into stress-adaptive systems. Miguel's got the most impressive collection of stress balls ever used in academic research ;)

All in all, interesting afternoon and an inspiring way to start the weekend :)

Am 20. Mai 2008 ist ein Großbrand in der Berliner Philharmonie von Hans Scharoun (fertiggestellt 1963) ausgebrochen, der aber ein paar Stunden später unter Kontrolle gebracht wurde. Auslöser waren Schweißarbeiten auf dem Dach. Zerstört wurden weite Teile des Dachs. Die Innenräume sind nicht betroffen, ab dem 1. Juni ist die Philharmonie wieder geöffnet und wird ab 2. Juni bespielt.

Noch einen Brand gab es an der TU Delft, ausgerechnet in der Fakultät für Architektur und Bauingenieurswesen, der allerdings weniger glimpflich verlaufen ist. Offenbar gab es durch eine lecke Wasserleitung in der Decke einen Kurzschluss in der Kaffeemaschine. Der Bau ist komplett ausgebrannt und wurde mittlerweile abgerissen. Zwar hat der moderne Hochhausturm aus den 1960er Jahren alle Sicherheitsvorschriften erfüllt, allerdings hätte ein Brand über den zentralen Betonkern im Innern gelöscht werden müssen - und eben hier brach das Feuer aus und war somit für die Feuerwehr nicht zugänglich.

Neben dem Gebäude selbst und allem, was zu einer Fakultät gehört, sind auch einige wertvolle Modelle, u.a. von Le Corbusier, Frank, Lloyd Wright und Adolf Loos verbrannt, die zufällig in Delft waren - eine knappe Woche später sollte eine Architektur-Ausstellung eröffnet werden.

Außerdem:

Manhattan ist derzeit ein hochbegehrtes Baugelände und erlebt einen Bauboom - nur mit der Sicherheit scheint es zu hapern. Schon der zweite Kran ist innerhalb weniger Wochen in ein 23stöckiges Wohnhaus gekracht. Die Folgen stellt man sich lieber nicht vor...

This is the presentation for the end of block 1. The project is located in Amsterdam, Indische buurt. My concept for the library is that I want to create a environment where its possible to meet each other. That's why I needed to slow down the people and extract them from the hectic urban surrounding to give theme a chance in meeting each other. The library is there for located in the wings of the building (floor 4 and 5). The form of the building comes from it's relation with the urban context and history.

My design of the building has a strong connection whit his urban surroudings. Located on the campus of the university it is because of its (lack) of massa floating in its context. That’s why I gave it a boundary in the form of a circle housing a music centre. The kindergarten on its self is formal in the volumes for the different rooms but a-formal in its organization centre around a central hall. The music centre and the kindergarten give together an interesting tension.

As for next academic year, we will indeed have a facility ready. It is the old main building of the university (so we've been told). The building itself is very different from our old faculty, mainly because our new location is actually older. It's an absolutely old-skool, brick, early 20th century. This building has a lot of old world charm, elegance and I think it is very sexy. Although we'll only stay in there for a couple of years, I think that I will really like the new old building.

...as you may have heard in various news broadcasts, the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology was destroyed in a serious fire on Tuesday May 13. Although this is unfortunate, we are very glad that no personal injuries have occurred. Also we have been able to save valuable collections of scale models and chairs by famous architects such as Rietveld.

Thanks to the help of numerous colleagues and relations in the field of education, architecture and business, our education, research and examination activities will be continued as from next Monday. Lecture rooms, instruction rooms and offices have partly been found at other faculties. Also large tents have been erected to house our teaching activities during the last few weeks of the spring term. We are confident that we will close this academic year without any delays.

The academic year 2008-2009 will start in September, as planned, both for our Dutch and our international students. We can assure you that the quality of our education will be of the high standards that characterize our faculty.

We can assure you that we will find alternative accommodation for our faculty within two weeks.

This morning, just before half past nine, a fire was reported at the Faculty of Architecture. At the moment no conclusive statement can be given about the exact cause of the fire. Although there is enormous relief that there have been no casualties, there is also immense sadness about the probable loss of so much research and education work - as well a historic material and collections. No indication can yet be given of the extent of the damage.

Also the Executive Board is highly concerned about this loss for students and members of staff. It has been confirmed however that all computer files that were centrally stored have been saved.

At the moment TU Delft is surveying the options for continuing the last three weeks of the current academic year and the start of the new year in September. Help and support have already been offered by various education institutions in the vicinity. A solution will also have to be found for researchers and other members of staff.
