Despite repeated attempts to disassociate himself, Senator Barack Obama and William Ayers have a long history of knowing one another, working together on boards, and sharing similar political and ideological ideas of socialism espoused by the organizations they served.

As for Ayers's wife Bernardine Dorhn, The Real Barack Obama brings up this information.

Is it coincidence or significant that Bernardine Dohrn (left, with Bill Ayers, 1981), after serving seven months in jail on a felony for refusing to cooperate with the 1981 Brinks robbery investigation, was employed from 1984-1988 at the prominent Chicago law firm, Sidley Austin, where both Michelle Robinson in 1988 and Barack Obama in 1989 would serve as summer interns, and where Barack Obama met his future wife? Is it coincidence or significant that Bernardine Dohrn supervised the interns at Sidley Austin and that this duty passed to Michelle Robinson after Bernardine Dohrn left to an associate professorship at Northwestern University? Is it coincidence or significant that Bill Ayers's father Tom Ayers (1915-2007) was a major client of Sidley Austin and long a significant proponent of progressive causes in Chicago?

Obama surprised the people of Ohio today when he showed up at their door to talk to them about the financial crisis and how it was affecting them.

His visit on Shrewsbury Street clearly took some residents by surprise, including Sue Sekel, 43, who was cleaning her house when the presidential candidate rang the doorbell.

“The one day I come home to clean ceiling fans and look like crap, and then this happens,” said Ms. Sekel, who pulled out her cell phone to snap a photograph with Mr. Obama. She told him that she had already voted early, but declined to tell a small group of pool reporters who she supported.

But Mr. Obama seemed to give away the secret, saying: “I appreciate that,” before moving to the next house on the block.

As word spread that he was in the neighborhood, a crowd began to gather, nearly all of whom seemed to be excited by the political visit. Before leaving, though, he was confronted by a man, who shouted: “Do you believe in the American Dream?”

It’s elections season! This is going to be the rare post about politics, since I don’t

It's elections season! This is going to be the rare post about politics, since I don't want this to be that kind of blog.

Good ol' Slate recently had an article about why we never hear about the Asian-American vote. Nothing I haven't already considered before, but it does bring up some interesting points.

Aside from the obvious (few in total numbers, and even fewer eligible to vote), there's the issue of heterogeneity. Unlike Latinos, we don't even have a unified language, and Asians here tend to not go far back enough living in this country to have developed any party loyalties.

But...personally, I don't see why this is all such a bad thing. I don't feel the need for Asian-Americans to be "recognized" by the pollsters and campaigners and fellow citizens when it comes to elections. I do believe that the concept of "Asian-American" can be useful (that's a whole future post, I think), but I don't need to be lumped together into a bloc of voters.

I registered to vote as an Independent because I think the whole idea of a party system is destructive. It undermines individual thought (ironic in the USA, isn't it?) by putting people in categories, so all people in said category can vote in the same predictable way.

So similarly, I don't think there needs to be an "Asian-American vote." Of course I think every Asian-American U.S. citizen should vote, but they can make their own decisions on how. I find this whole 80-20 Initiative -- trying to get 80% of Asians to vote for one side or another -- is bordering on offensive. If 80% of Asians really do feel one way or the other, fine, we should all vote that way. But artificially constructing a voting bloc just for the sake of creating a voting bloc? That's completely ridiculous.

More Asian-Americans in politics would be nice, but I want that to be because they're qualified people that their constituents voted for, not because a bunch of Asian-Americans wanted an Asian-American politician in office. (Sort of like the whole Hilary Clinton and feminists thing...) I'd like to point out that here in whitey-white Portland, Oregon, we have David Wu, the first Chinese-American member of the U.S. House of Representatives, now seeking his sixth term.

When I vote in November, it'll be as my own, intelligent, whole self -- which obviously includes being Asian-American but it's far from the whole story.

Rumor. Rumor. Rumor. Or is it?

It was two weeks before the DNC convention in August that allegations initially surfaced. A personal friendship, between Senator Barack Obama, and a woman named Vera Baker working for Obama as a "Finance Director" for his 2004 campaign for U.S. Senate, however have resurfaced. Although another woman was listed and paid as a finance director during this time, this young woman was also. A sudden relocation to New York occurred. Michelle Obama seemed unusually more angry during that timeframe. "And then, even more suddenly, Vera Baker was relocated to the island of Martinique, where she remains." according to Hillbuzz.

Jammie Wearing Fool and Ace of Spades HQ notes the following.

...The woman is "working" in the Caribbean drawing a salary from.... uhhh... let's say from someone who is a big, shiny part of the dirty Chicago political machine. And it makes no sense that she's doing her supposed "job," for which she seems unqualified anyway, in the Caribbean, of all places. It's unclear how she could possibly do this job at all, never mind from the Caribbean. And she's been there for at least a year. (At least.) This isn't some sabbatical or few months' of "work" on an island paradise.

This woman was a major, big-time fundraiser. She raised x millions of dollars for various Democratic interests (connected to Obama) and then opened her own shop in DC. Since she was (as any fundraiser does) getting a cut of the take, this was a lucrative job. But she, for reasons unfathomable, suddenly shut the shop down and decamped to a little Caribbean island. And somewhere along the line got a "job" from her own Fred Baron. Which conveniently put her far away from Obama, Michelle, and the media.

Within hours of the Daily Mail article breaking, she called the Illinois hq of the Obama campaign. They wouldn't talk to her.

Incidentally, didn't Obama vacation in the Caribbean after he won the primaries...? Oh that's right, he did. I raised this with my source who, alas, hadn't even made that connection.

The Daily Mail notes the following.

‘They said she was removed from her position and the political scene because Michelle got wind of the fact that she had a close friendship with her husband,’ the source said. ‘She disappeared, then she reappeared in the Caribbean.’

The Mail on Sunday located the woman in the Caribbean, where she now works. She denied that Mrs Obama had raised any objections to her job on the 2004 campaign.

‘No,’ she said. ‘Nothing happened. I just left ... at the end of the campaign.’

Asked about the claim that Mrs Obama accused her of having a close friendship with the Senator, she said: ‘I have no comment on anything.

‘I switched careers. That’s it. I’m a Democrat and I support Senator Obama ... I don’t have anything to say.’

She added that she emigrated to the Caribbean from the US after falling in love with the man with whom she now lives.

Senator Obama’s team did not respond to our request for comment.

But one day after we contacted Obama’s team, a London law firm informed The Mail on Sunday that it had been retained by the woman to help her to counter the whispering campaign, which they said was ‘absolutely false’.

No Quarter is holding out for a little more information to see if it is worthy of substantiated presidential race talk.

By: J. D. Longstreet

********************************

There is a lot of dejection in the ranks of the Republican Party these days. As the rank and file of the GOP looks at the disparaging poll numbers the fear is growing that McCain will not be able to close the gap on Obama before Election Day.

Conservatives, never happy with, nor ever quite sure of McCain’s chances in the first place, yet willing to hold their noses and cast a ballot for him in a desperate attempt to thwart the leftist agenda Obama will carry with him into the Oval Office, are the MOST discouraged, it seems to me.

Since the 2000 election campaign, we here at IoF have declared that John McCain will never be President of the United States. We still believe that.

Conservative voters have been loath to support the McCain ticket. Without the support of conservatives a GOP candidate can forget victory in a Presidential campaign. Without that conservative support there is no “fire” in the campaign. The fighting spirit, which rests almost entirely with conservatives on the right, simply is not there. You cannot have missed the lack of zest and zeal in the McCain Campaign. You don’t see it because… it isn’t there.

Even those conservatives who have vowed to support McCain after he brought Palin on board have withheld total commitment. Their heart is just not in it.

Since day one of the campaign for the oval office 2008 conservatives have scratched their collective heads in wonderment at the candidates the GOP wheeled out for our inspection. At first, we thought it was a bad joke. Then, it was rumored that the upper echelons in the party were saying they didn’t need conservative support to win the White House. We KNEW the party was in serious trouble at that moment.

There has been a tug of war within the GOP since the conservative take-over in the mid 1990’s. The resentment of the bluebloods and the country club Republicans toward the K-Mart Republicans has been palpable. You see… we conservatives are something of an embarrassment to them. For the most part they are the moderate to liberal branch of the GOP. (Oh, yes. Just as there are conservative democrats there are liberal republicans.) Unfortunately, the liberal republicans carry with them that “liberal guilt” just the same as their democrat counterparts. I am of the opinion there is nothing so dangerous to the country as liberal guilt no matter if the liberal is republican or democrat.

On the other side of the political spectrum the democrat party is not really a “party”. It is more an amalgamation of victim’s groups, bound together in their perceived victimhood, seeking redress from the government. They have been thus for a very long time and, in that time, have forged a bond between them in order to attain their goals. It is quite different in the GOP.

In the Republican Party, the differences between the two main groups, the liberals and the conservatives, is much wider… and… that gap can never be closed… even temporarily in order to secure victory. Conservatives can never compromise their core beliefs. Even an attempt is doomed to failure. The instant conservatives make an attempt to compromise; they are no longer conservative. You can see the problem.

And that, dear reader, is why I continue to call for a solely conservative political party. The infighting within the GOP is not going to cease until conservatives leave. Of course, the moment conservatives DO leave; the GOP will be relegated to the backbenches in Congress for a hundred years, or more.

The McCain Campaign has been a lost cause from the beginning. Apparently McCain thought he could replace conservative support with the support of Independent voters. That was never very likely because such a large percentage of independent voters are conservative voters who, for one reason or the other, left the two dominant political parties. No matter who chose that course, McCain or his advisors, in my opinion, it was unwise and it may well cost him this election. In the long run, however, conservatives may benefit from the GOP loss in November.

Why?

There is a major firestorm coming, nationally and internationally. There will be epiphanies by the bundles landing on the doorsteps of naïve American voters in the next few years. The cost of living in the US is going to skyrocket upwards along with taxes and new laws and regulations the likes of which we have never seen before. Add to that the spread of Islamofacism and the accompanying wars and rumors of wars and the ever-increasing drain on our treasury to fight those wars, here at home as well as in foreign lands, and you begin to get the picture.

Conservatives have been warning of the multitude of festering boils about to erupt but… nobody wanted to listen. In a few months reality will set in and with it a slow awakening. By then, of course, the US Ship of State will have sailed and like any ship it will take an interminably long time to turn it around and set it’s course aright. If, and it is a big “IF”, we are able to overcome what is headed our way, and begin a successful program of reconstruction, the country may find it necessary to turn to conservative leadership in order to rebuild the country and rehabilitate what will surely be a decimated military and a dispirited citizenry.

For a number of years now, decades even, there has been a growing sense, in the human psyche, that something dark and foreboding is on the threshold. I have felt it and now I sense its growing strength and it’s growing inevitability. In my opinion, there are extremely dark times ahead for America… just months ahead, in fact. We will be sorely tried, perhaps, as never before. What is even more troubling, to me, is my concern that we cannot turn back, nor can we influence what is about to happen. It is far too late. The dye is cast. Now we can only watch and wait and do whatever is necessary to survive as a nation.

The Issue: California voters will be deciding on 12 ballot initiatives when they vote on November 4

The Issue: California voters will be deciding on 12 ballot initiatives when they vote on November 4. Of the 12 propositions, 6 require some sort of mandated spending or bond (not including measures that will require additional expense for agencies to enact them). California lawmakers already have trouble balancing our budget at it's current spending levels. In light of the budget problems in our state, California voters should reject programs that mandate additional government spending.

The Budget Problem

In California, we have become used to a state budget that is habitually late. This isn't just a tradition, but really part of the process. While the California Governor issues a proposed budget in January, most of the lawmakers and state agency administrators take little notice because the Governor will release a revised version of his budget in May (termed the "May Revise"). This means that serious deliberations on the California Budget due on July 1st isn't started until sometime around May 15th, over 4 months later.

The extreme partisanship in California doesn't seem to make the situation any better. Despite having a largely non-partisan state (1 in 5 registered voters in California decline to state a political party), the officials who are elected tend to be toward to the political extremes. When your legislature is divided between fiscal conservatives and tax-and-spend liberals with very little in between, finding compromise on the budget becomes difficult. The supermajority required to pass a budget is also a obstacle to getting a budget completed (though it does provide stability in the budget, more on that another time).

Mandated Spending

These factors have probably led to the development of mandated spending in the state. Proposition 98 was passed by the voters in 1988 mandating that 39% of the state's budget be spent on K-14 education with annual increases based on enrollment. Today Education accounts for a majority of the state's budget.

The following propositions have bonds associated with them:

Prop 1A - $19.4 Billion Bond

Prop 3 - $2 Billion Bond

Prop 10 - $10 Billion Bond

Prop 12 - $1.2 Billion Bond

Additionally, these propositions have mandated spending:

Prop 5 - $300 million increase in mandated spending annually

Prop 6 - 965 million increase in mandated spending annually

Analysis: Stop tying the hands of our elected officials!

The fiscal effects of passing voter initiatives with mandated spending is removing their ability to make decisions regarding the California budget. The more decisions that we mandate by law, the less flexibility and discretion is given to our elected officials. It doesn't matter who you elect into office if the voters have made all of the decisions for them. Our leaders don't have the ability to negotiate or to move money to higher priority programs as needed when funding is mandated, and when crucial money is needed for projects, it is taken away from other, arguable more important needs, like higher education and infrastructure. The reason California has a 1960s infrastructure is because we strip all of the infrastructure money out of the budget, while K-14 education receives the lion's share.

Don't support bonds or mandated spending. They tighten the already paper-thin California budget.

RICHARD BRENNAN
OTTAWA BUREAU
GATINEAU—NDP Leader Jack Layton today urged Quebec voters to turn their backs on the separatist Bloc Quebecois.

"There's a new choice for Quebec in this election - a choice of hope and optimism," he said, adding the province would benefit in many ways from a national party, as opposed to one that has no MPs outside Quebec.

Layton pointed out many things that Quebecers hold dearly, such as the environment, that require strong actions across provincial boundaries that can only be offered by a national party.

The NDP is hoping to make a breakthrough in the riding of Gatineau with Francoise Boivin, a former Liberal MP in the Paul Martin/s Liberal government. The riding is now held by the PQ's Richard Nadeau.

Throughout the election, Layton has been appealing to voters of all political stripes to side with the NDP, promising a New Democratic government would kill the Conservatives' $50 billion corporate tax cut and use that money to improve child care, hire nurses and doctors, and bring in pharmacare, among other things.

Earlier in the day in Toronto, the NDP campaign turned to veteran New Democrat war horse Ed Broadbent to shore up support.

"It is good news for the NDP in every part of the country," he told the adoring crowd, adding that the party is challenging in 20 ridings where the NDP have never been a contenders.

"We will bring in new seat after seat and we will have the largest caucus in the history (of the party)," Broadbent, who had a record 43 seats in 1988, told about 400 supporters.

[Originally written on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008]
I really have to work at suppressing the urge to make

[Originally written on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008]

I really have to work at suppressing the urge to make political slurs. I am conscious of the smarmy remark as it bubbles up within me: the kind of remark that would make those who share my political ideologies laugh out loud and nod their heads approvingly. I began to notice my tendency to do that after listening to my co-workers making comments (we all work at a television news station - uh, kind of can't escape the political coverage there). It's completely understandable. It's school spirit, good old-fashioned competition.

Except these days it is all too evident how damaging it can be to fly the flag of our political ideals. It really only serves to alienate us from each other, and so I decided to try a different tack: I've decided to listen to those whose views I fundamentally disagree with to see if I could learn something from them.

Let me tell you, that is not easy.

It really does have the effect of making one want to lash out or turn away and clap your hands over your ears. So I decided to listen: I'm listening to Obama supporters, McCain supporters, and anyone else who cares to share their views with me, whether I agree with them or not. It really takes some skill to be able to do that - not to sound arrogant, but I'm here to tell you if I can do it, anyone can do it. In fact, I believe more of us should do it.

From talking to people I already see the positives that BOTH sides have to offer: democrats are good at some things, republicans are good at others. Neither side is good at EVERYTHING! Both sides, ultimately, need the strengths of the other. What if all the countries who are trying to put astronauts into space worked together instead of racing each other to be the 'first' to accomplish something? Imagine if you had the strength of the Russians working with the strengths of the Chinese and Americans to explore the final frontier? I bet those 3 countries working together could come up with some amazing things! Better lifestyles all around!

But of course, that means setting aside some pride and stubbornness. And frankly, I see both Obama supporters and McCain supporters being able to do that. Because if there's one thing both sides agree on, it's the strength of the citizens of this country. Even in the midst of our current economic situation, everybody knows this country is going to bounce back eventually, somehow, some way. It might be sooner, it might be later, but it's going to happen.

Perhaps in the voting booth there should be a place where voters are encouraged to write one positive thing about both candidates whose views they 'oppose'. Find one positive thing, something you like about the candidates you didn't vote for. Nobody is completely evil - Randy Pausch said that (The Last Lecture). Everybody has something good to offer, even if it takes a while to reveal itself.

Another thought I had was maybe if enough people voted for a third party, it would get the Democrats' and Republicans' attention in a way that would force them to look at each other as compatriots rather than as enemies. In other words, the third parties would become their 'common enemy', the one thing that brings 2 bickering parties together, usually. I'm not naive, I know the next President will be either Obama or McCain; but my pressing question is what will the next President do to get both parties to work together? Do they even know what to do? What happened to that spirit that unified the House and Senate members singing "God Bless America" together right after 9/11? The 9/11 terrorists are not sufficient anymore; that's why I think a good, strong third party, preferably the Green Party, but I'll take just about any one of the bigger ones, to get Democrats and Republicans to build off each others' strengths, rather than dividing our fine country.

McNasty (John McCain) and (Barack Obama) Osama.

They are the same person and heres why,

Behind the normalcy of every elections charades this one is worst due to the obvious economic stand point of our Country, and every country following our path, neither candidate has any proposed solution besides bullshit, changing there minds, suggesting more bailouts and borrowing, suggesting impossible methods, definitly not suggesting change. But not only that huge issue, but also the issue of the North American Union; The joining of Canada, US, and Mexico, under one currency system of the Amero following in the footsteps of the European Union, which is crazy if this shit happens it will deflate our constitution and rights as Americans among many other horrible reasons on why thats going to be a terrible thing. This issue was discussed and proposed in the House with videos that are so easily accesible through the internet I don't understand why this is such an unbelievable theory, Ron Paul has discussed it publicly throughout his campaign, and it was actually brought to the attention of Candidate Barack Obama, but as he let the question sink in and possibly took the information feeding through a headset to advise him what to do that would be corporately viable to his cause and wallet, haha. But he did actually just star at the ground, pumps up his crowd, and says he hasn't seen enough evidence, and even has the nerve to call it a conspiracy theory. John McCain of course had the same out look. Issue number 2, foreign policy? is there one thats gonna be proposed? Are you goes actually gonna talk about these things? Our relations with other countries? The fact that we have our military troops in 130 different countries? AND, the fact that we dont have any money to finance these operations, it's ultimatly being financed by the American Household, we will be taxed to death because of our Governments doing. Issue 3, the right to keep our Individual Liberties, Many of you do not know the issue of net neutrality and constriction of the internet and other means of freedom, its also being discussed behind the scenes, but not with the front men. See Internet Freedoms Blog. Issue 4, We still a major concern for global warming? It didn't just go away with the popularity of the Al Gore documentary, it's still here and no means are being suggested at all between either party, yes they say the help spawn helpful organizations, and hybrid cars, Hybrid cars are way to fucking expensive for the average person. Which Obama, playing the "common man" like many politicans like to pull in his seat in elections, he's not common as he claims; the guys rich too, he made about 7 million with his books and t-shirts, he may be considered a minority in our society, which some may relate to easily, fact of the matter is him being from another race isn't gonna change anything, you think he's not gonna succumb to the modern curruptions of politics, corporatism, and greed?! The only thing that changes is most people overlook his inexperiences, and other downfalls; like him, although a great speaker never answering a question with a solution but with just his pulling of his talent to pump a crowd and speak loudly, and just associate him with the "Change of a different race in office" or just wanna be apart of a historical event. But in our times, we can't elect somebody for those reasons, we need someone that will seriously tackle the real issues, and is abuntly clear these 2 candidates wont, the just avoid them by any means necessary including the excluding the independent candidates to take part in the Debates. A country with our status, it's extremely dangerous to be vulnerable. They evade the same questions, say the same thing, act the same, they are the stratigically selected candidates that will play well with the big money that funds there trail. Besides the petty insignifigance, they have exactly the same responses on the real issues.

Either way with these two we're fucked,

A.) John McCain might die, then we have Palin at international meetings, and I have more experience in my ass (Alaska? come on!)

B.) John McCain will go crazy power hungry, snap back into his families traditional neo-conservative military mode. Live up to the McNasty, throw out our nukes everywhere.

C.) John McCain will send tons more troops to Iraq, waste our money, get us attacked, and loose a war he started. Probably ending up with our country in a civil war and Palin's taking office, while he'd be missing and ending up in a prison overseas.

D.) Obama would spawn 1,000 of organizations in attempt to help Americans, with money we don't have, taxes will be high, He'll end up involved in some sex scandal, he'll go to international meetings talk his ass off about nothing and make us seem even dumber then others think we are.

E.) Obama wont do anything at all in office, allowing bills to be passed that destroy our constitutional rights, his healthcare plan will fail, and maybe he'll make small profit deals with out countries.

F.) Obama will start his own clothing company, make millions. And transform from being a socialist into a dictator.

G.) Obama will live up to his former terrorist connections, and ultimately be working with the other side, in attempt to destroy our country.

H.) John McCain and Barack Obama, will succumb to the Globalist and Corporate plan, we will be under the Amero, We will literally go into a great depression with increases inflation due to our dependency on the illegal and inappropriate Federal Reserve, Neither will tax cut on Big Businesses leading the almost complete control of corporate america, there will not be change, and pretty much it will keep going down hill, wars, poverty, and two dishonest people.

There is a FALSE rumor going around by e-mail telling people that if they vote Straight Democratic Party, they must also cast a vote specifically for Barack Obama in order to have an Obama vote registered. THIS IS FALSE INFORMATION. The truth is that if you cast a Straight Democratic Party vote, you will be voting for Barack Obama and your Straight Democratic vote will count as a vote for Obama. But if you then go down and "vote" for Obama, you may actually be cancelling your Obama vote. Don't be fooled: Just cast a Straight Democratic Party vote and that will get Obama and all the Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.
