Smokers won’t quit but they might shift

CAIRO: After a period of relative stability, cigarettes will now be sold at higher prices as part of the newly declared price hikes the government instituted to finance public sector wage increases.

The ubiquitous local Cleopatra brand will now sell for LE 3 up from LE 2.25. At the opposite end of the spectrum Marlboro brands have seen a LE 1.5 increase from LE 7.50 to LE 9.

Brands such as Rothmans and L&M have also seen an increase of at least one pound to reach LE 5.5.

However, due to the inelasticity of demand on a product such as tobacco, it is not believed the industry will be adversely affected by the price changes.

“We brand cigarettes as an inelastic commodity, which generally means it’s not affected by price movements as much as anything else. Demand is not determined by price. It will drop but not as much as expected,” a market analyst told Daily News Egypt.

Smokers themselves seem resigned to the price increase and will not vary their habit too much in the face of the price change.

Taisseer Nasry, a human resources specialist at an international bank who smokes Marlboro Reds, told Daily News Egypt, “A pound and a half increase wont make too much of a difference regarding how many packs you buy over the month, but if it is LE 12 for example, then people might stop.”

“People accepted when the price went from LE 4.5 to LE 7.5 overnight, so they will accept this too,” he added.

But it is the smokers of Cleopatra, the cheapest and most popular brand amongst Egypt’s working classes, who feel the price increase more strongly.

Mamdouh, a building porter and Cleopatra smoker, told Daily News Egypt “LE 0.75 increase is big. We will have to see how we can deal with this.”

Asked what he would personally do, Mamdouh responded, “Well, at first you can decrease the number of cigarettes you smoke. So instead of smoking a pack a day [20 cigarettes maybe we can smoke 10 cigarettes. The best solution is to quit of course.”

With only one company — the government owned Eastern Tobacco — producing cigarettes in Egypt the revenues will all end up in the same place.

“It means higher revenues for the tobacco industry,” the market analyst said, “Eastern Tobacco has the monopoly and is majority owned by the Chemical Holding Company, which is basically the government. Even though there will be a slight dip [in consumption], it will be more than offset by the price increase.”

“We could possibly see a shift in the type of brands consumers smoke, but as it is a monopoly it makes no difference. A drop in Marlboro just means an increase in another brand,” he added.

Virtuoso to give concert to thank Egyptian driver who returned $4 million violin

NEWARK, New Jersey: A violin virtuoso plans to replace the airport cacophony of taxis and airplanes with the exquisite tones of a 285-year-old violin to give thanks to the Egyptian-born cab driver who reunited him with his lost instrument.

Grammy-nominated violinist Philippe Quint said Monday he will play a private 30-minute performance on Tuesday at Newark Liberty International Airport’s cab waiting area.

Mohamed Khalil and his family will also have tickets to Quint’s next New York performance, Sept. 23 at Carnegie Hall.

The irreplaceable 1723 Antonio Stradivari “Ex-Kiesewetter” violin was left in Khalil’s cab the morning of April 21, when Quint was returning from a performance in Dallas. Quint found himself in the same predicament as other musicians, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who had left their instruments in cabs.

Adding to his distress, the violin valued at $4 million was on loan from philanthropists Clement and Karen Arrison, of Buffalo, New York.

After calling police and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Quint was soon in the offices of the Newark Taxi Commission viewing photographs of taxis.

Khalil had parked his cab for the night, not knowing that people were trying desperately to find it. After he got word the next morning, Khalil arranged to meet Quint again. Once reunited with the violin, the musician gave the driver $100.

Khalil, 57, emigrated from Egypt in 1980 and became a US citizen. He has been driving cabs for 24 years and is married with three sons. Quint, 34, is also an immigrant, having left Russia in 1991 to become a US citizen.

Egyptians wish President Mubarak a very happy birthday

CAIRO: President Hosni Mubarak’s 80th birthday was marked by an assortment of “statements” Sunday with Egyptians around the country “celebrating” in their own way; whether with headlines like “Why we love you Mr President,” heightened security or by dressing in black.

More than any other year, Egyptians were divided between glorifying the president and criticizing his rule.

Billboards erected across the capital carried a pro-government message indirectly criticizing the strike: “Youth Build, They Don’t Destroy.”

State-owned newspapers Al-Ahram and Akhbar Al-Youm had both dedicated their front pages to Mubarak, with full-page pictures of him.

Akhbar Al-Youm’s editorial by editor-in-chief Momtaz El Kot cites the many reasons why Egyptians love the president and how much he gave the country in the past 27 years.

In addition to the lead story “The Day Egypt was reborn,” Al-Ahram ran a special four-page supplement to mark the happy occasion, listing Mubarak’s achievements year-by-year since his appointment as Vice President to former President Anwar Sadat in 1972.

Independent newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm ran a five-page special titled “Mubarak: 1928-2008.” It includes a section on his milestones as president, a report about political parties during his rule and a feature on the relationship between Mubarak and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Another independent newspaper, El Badeel, ran an attractive headline: “Happy 80th year to you Mr President,” with a subhead “Young people born during Mubarak’s rule: We hope to see another president before we die.”

Groups on Facebook continued their call for a general strike protesting low wages and inflation to correspond with the President’s birthday. One group titled “Let’s be Civilized and Wear Black on May 4,” called on all Egyptians to peacefully express their opinion.

“This is the second general strike in Egypt and I’m sure the number of people striking will increase due to the support of the Muslim Brotherhood,” said Amr Ali, the creator of the group.

Facebook was used on April 6 as a tool to promote the strike action, which resulted in the imprisonment of the group’s administrator, Esraa Abdel Fattah, for three weeks.

But this didn’t set Ali and others back. On one group called ‘Ana Maserya,’ (I’m an Egyptian), the administrator wrote, “We are only asking for our rights and every citizen has the right to protest peacefully.”

Tight security was evident around Downtown Cairo with police trucks lining the streets leading to Tahrir Square. However, there were no indications that people refrained from going to work as the day started off with the usual traffic jams, unlike the case on April 6.

THE EXODUS IN EGYPTIAN SOURCES

[This paper was read at the Annual Meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research, held in Boston November 17-20, 1999.]

At the center of the Bible account there is the story of a Semitic Hebrew tribe descending to Egypt at the time of Joseph, then returning to Canaan some time later at the time of Moses. Biblical scholars and Egyptologists had, up to the mid-20th century, accepted the Exodus narration as representing a true historical account. Following the Second World War, however, the situation changed dramatically. Thanks to archaeological excavations, more light was thrown on the ancient history of both Egypt and Canaan; nevertheless, no evidence was found to support the Exodus account of the Bible. Negative evidence from historical sources led many scholars to dismiss the Exodus narration as a mere fiction, and ten years ago, Professor Donald Redford concluded that the story of the Exodus is, in fact, based on the expulsion of the Hyksos from Egypt, therefore much of its detail is fictitious.

I do not agree, however, with this conclusion. I believe that the biblical account of the Exodus does represent true historical events. The lack of historical evidence, in my view, is due to the fact that scholars have, so far, been looking in the wrong historical period.

The search for the Exodus has been toponymic in nature, related to the names of geographical locations mentioned in the Bible, such as the area of Goshen and the store-cities of Ramses and Pithom. When Eduard Henri Naville arrived at Tell el-Maskhita in the eastern Delta in the winter of 1883, he was looking for the store-city of Pithom. Six months later, Naville confirmed to the first annual meeting of the Egypt Exploration Fund in London that this location in the Wadi Tumilat was in fact the store-city of Pithom built by Ramses II. Naville then proceeded to show that the biblical word Goshen is equivalent to Egyptian Gesem, which is the name of the area of Faqus in the eastern Delta. Having found Pithom and Goshen, the next step was to try and locate the city of Ramses, where the Exodus is believed to have started. Looking for Ramses, however, proved to be more elusive. Different locations were suggested by different scholars for that city—from Tanis, modern San el-Hagar at the bottom of Lake Manzalah at the start of this century, to Tell-el Dabaa Qantir in the eastern Delta at the present time.

The fact that all these locations are related to Ramses II persuaded scholars to regard this king as being the Pharaoh of the Oppression; Merenptah his successor being the Pharaoh of the Exodus. But when, in 1896, Flinders Petrie found the stele of Merenptah's 5th year which mentioned the Israelites already in Canaan, the date of the Exodus had to be re-fixed to the end of Ramses II's rule. Ramses II has now become the Pharaoh of both the Oppression and the Exodus.

The following step was to find the date of the Descent. This step proved to be an easy task. Following the Book of Exodus, which states that the Israelites' Sojourn in Egypt lasted for 430 years (Exodus 12:40-41), they counted 430 years back from the end of Ramses II's reign and arrived at the very beginning of the Hyksos period for the arrival of Joseph into Egypt. In this way the time of both the Descent and the Exodus was fixed, not on chronological, but on geographical evidence. Looking for historical confirmation of a Semitic Exodus from Egypt at the end of Ramses II's reign, however, they found only negative evidence. To rely mainly on philological and geographical similarities, in my view, was the main reason behind the failure to reach a positive conclusion. Chronology is the backbone of history, and it is for the time of both the Descent and the Exodus that we should start looking.

One of the main reasons which persuaded early scholars that the Hyksos period was the right time for Joseph in Egypt, was their belief, following William Albright, that it was the Hyksos rulers who first introduced the war chariot into Egypt. As the biblical story of Joseph has three references to chariots, this meant that this war machine was already used in Egypt at the time of Joseph. Recent archaeological excavations in Hyksos locations, however, failed to produce any single evidence to show that they ever used this advanced war machine. Almost all Hyksos locations in Egypt have now been excavated. Neither at Tell el-Dabaa, Tel el-Yahudia, Tell el-Heboia, or at any other Hyksos location at the eastern Delta, has any evidence come to show the existence of chariots.

Moreover, Egyptian accounts of their war against the Hyksos, as found in the Kamose Stele and the tomb of Ahmos Son of Abana, or Manetho's history, have no mention of chariots taking place in the fighting. Before the time of Amenhotep I of the 18th dynasty, no archaeological evidence has been found in Egypt to support Albright's view of the introduction of the war chariot by the Hyksos.

Accordingly, Joseph's arrival in Egypt could not have taken place before the 18th dynasty. But at which part of the 18th dynasty was his arrival?

Again the Bible account does offer a clue that could help us coming closer to the time of Joseph. While Genesis 41:43 states that Pharaoh gave Joseph a chariot at the ceremony of his appointment to his position, Genesis 50:9 mentions that Joseph took with him "both chariots and horsemen" when he went up to bury his father in Canaan. This account indicates two things: that Joseph was appointed to be responsible for the chariots, and that the chariots had already been separated from infantry to become a separate entity. This situation could not have been possible, as Alan Schulman was able to show, before the time of Amenhotep III at the beginning of the 14th century BC. The first man appointed at the head of the Chariotry was Yuya, therefore we should be looking for Joseph and the Israelites in Egypt starting only from the time of Amenhotep III.

Here we find some interesting archaeological information. As Professor Raphael Giveon has shown, a fragmentary list of toponyms of the Shasu Bedouins of Sinai included the name Ta-Shasw-Yahw, (Giveon 1971:26f.) which suggests that Semites worshipping Yahweh were found in Egypt during the time of Amenhotep III. Another significant archaeological evidence of this period comes from Sakkara. In 1989 Dr. Alain-Pierre Zivie discovered the tomb of Aper-el, a chief minister of both Amenhotep III and Akhenaten. His name indicates a Hebrew origin, possibly also related to Elohim.

When, on the other hand, we attempt to look for the date of the Exodus, we find that the only archaeological evidence in Egypt that mentions Israel by name confirms that they were in Canaan in the 5th year of Merenptah, during the last quarter of the 13th century BC. This evidence indicates clearly that the Israelites must have left Egypt at a considerable time before that date, in which case the 430 years of the Exodus account could not be representing the actual length of the Sojourn. In fact, the Book of Genesis gives us a contradictory account regarding the length of the Sojourn.

According to the Book of Genesis (15: 13, 16), it was the fourth Israelite generation since their Descent to Egypt who left in the Exodus. The time of four generations between Joseph and Moses could not possibly be 430 years. A close examination of the biblical narration shows that the figure of 430 years represents the total ages of these four generation, for if we add the ages of Levi (137), Kohath (133), Amram (137) and Moses (120), the total would be 527 years. Of this, 57 years were deducted as representing the age Levi reached at the time of the Descent, as well as 40 years which Moses is said to have lived after the Exodus, which leaves us with 430 years. As the first two generations, Levi and Kohath, had already been born in Canaan and arrived in Egypt with Jacob at the time of the Descent (Genesis 46:11), only two generations could have been born in Egypt: Amram and Moses. If we allow 25 years for every generation to beget his firstborn, we should be looking for a period of only about fifty years plus for the length of the Sojourn. In this case, we should be looking for the historical evidence for the Exodus starting from the mid-14th century BC, fifty years from the beginning of the reign of Amenhotep III.

As the Exodus account implies an attempt by some Semitic tribes to leave Egyptian Sinai to enter into Canaan, we soon find the evidence for the one and only such attempt. This only recorded exodus attempt by Bedouin tribes from Sinai trying to enter Canaan took place at the end of the short reign of Ramses I. Immediately after the death of Ramses I c.1333 BC, we find evidence of some Semitic Bedouin tribes of Sinai, called Shasu by the Egyptians, attempting to cross the Egyptian borders to Canaan.

On the east side of the northern wall of the great Hypostyle Hall in Amun's temple at Karnak we find two series of scenes, which are distributed symmetrically on either side of the entrance to the temple, representing the wars of Seti I who succeeded Ramses I on the throne. The first of these wars, chronologically, is found at the bottom row of the east wall and represent the war against the Shasu. After setting out on the route between the fortified city of Zarw and Gaza—known in the Bible as 'the way of the land of the Philistines' (Exodus 13:17), and passing the fortified water stations, "pushing along the road in the Negeb, the king scatters the Shasu, who from time to time gather in sufficient numbers to meet him." One of these actions is depicted in this relief as taking place on the desert road. Over the battle scene stands the inscription: "The Good God, Sun of Egypt, Moon of all land, Montu in the foreign countries ... like Baal, ... The rebels, they know not how they shall (flee); the vanquished of the Shasu (becoming like) that which existed not."

In this campaign it seems that Seti pursued the Shasu into the northern Sinai area and Edom, which includes 'the waters of Meribah,' as well as the land of Moab at the borders between Sinai and Canaan/Jordan—before returning to continue his march along the northern Sinai road between Zarw and Gaza until he reached Canaan itself. Just across the Egyptian border he arrived at a fortified town whose name is given as Pe-Kanan, which is believed to be the city of Gaza.

Another scene has the following inscription over the defeated Shasu: "Year 1. King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Menma-re. The destruction which the mighty sword of Pharaoh . . . made among the vanquished of the Shasu from the fortress of Zarw to Pe-Kanan, when His Majesty marched against them like a fierce-eyed lion, making them carcasses in their valleys, overturned in their blood like those that exist not.

Pa-Ramses, who later became Ramses I and established the Ramesside 19th dynasty, was the vizier and Commander of the army during the reign of Horemheb. He was also appointed as the governor of the fortified border city of Zarw, which supervised the whole border area of northern Sinai, including the land of Goshen, and which had been turned into a big prison by Horemheb. Ramses himself belonged to a local family coming from this area, and it is this Ramses who must have been remembered by the Hebrew scribes putting down the biblical account. Ramses I was already a very old man at the time of his accession and did not survive the end of his second year on the throne. His son Seti I followed him, and it seems that the Shasu attempt to leave Egypt began before the death of his father. At the very beginning of Seti's reign a messenger arrived with the news: "The Shasu enemies are plotting rebellion. Their tribal leaders are gathered in one place, standing on the foothills of Khor (Palestine) and are engaged in turmoil and uproar." And although Seti I was able to stop the Shasu leaving Sinai, forty years later, during the 20th year of Ramses II, we find them already in Canaan.

Shasu was the name given by the Egyptians to the Beduin of Sinai, known in both the Bible and the Quran as the Midianites, allies of Moses. It seems that the Israelites were only a small part of a large Semitic attempt to leave Egypt for Canaan.

Thus Horemheb becomes the Pharaoh of the Oppression and Ramses I the Pharaoh of the Exodus.

Opnieuw een landendag-FDC. Op 6 september 1958 hield men op de Expo de Benelux-dag, exact 14 jaar na het ondertekenen van het Benelux-verdrag op 5 september 1948. Let ook op de rechthoekige stempel. Geslaagde samenwerking van vrije mensen lezen we, in ene periode waarin enerzijds de herrinnering aan de onderdrukking van de 2de wereldoorlog nog levendig was en anderzijds het concept Vrijheid door het Westen gebruikt werd in de ideologische strijd met het Oost-Blok.

Again a country-days-FDC. On September 6th World's Fair celebrated the BENELUX-union, an economic union between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg, only a day after the union's 14th anniversary. Mind the square marking stating the BENELUX was a succesfull cooperation of free people. A small mark that says a lot about the period it was used in. The memories of brutal oppresion during the Second World war were still fresh and on the other hand the West fought a cold war with the Soviet Bloc in which the concept of freedom was used as an ideologic weapon.

The Tunes Koninginnenacht

THE TUNES EN KONINGINNENACHT

Koninginnenacht 2008. Dat rijmt. En dat is best bijzonder. In feite rijmt "koninginnenacht" maar 1 keer per eeuw met het jaartal waarin het gevierd word. Een goede reden voor een bijzonder festijn, aldus The Tunes.

Het stoeptreden voor Atlantis (zie onderstaande posts) was heet nieuws. Zo heet, dat The Tunes er de voorpagina van www.oor.nl mee haalden. Klik op het onderstaande logo voor het volledige bericht.

Ook radio3FM lustte er wel een hapje pap van, en belde Misha om opheldering te vragen:

De gemeente Alkmaar waarschuwde The Tunes op 29 april meermalig instrumenten te zullen innemen als gespeeld zou worden op de stoep voor Atlantis. Om de gemeente op een ondeugende loer te draaien speelden The Tunes toch. En om de instrumenten te sparen, gebruikten zij hun Adams-instrumenten.

Het bleef die avond echter niet bij een stoeptreden. Het poppodium Parkhof was zo goed om The Tunes in hun avondprogramma op te nemen. Hier kwamen de echte instrumenten tevoorschijn.

Maar ook dit optreden bleek niet het laatste optreden van koninginnenacht te zijn. Diep in de nacht belde opnieuw radio 3FM. The Tunes speelden voor het oor van het gehele land een ode aan de dj.

De woelige koninginnenacht van The Tunes is vervolgens door 3voor12 beschreven in een recensie op hun website. In dit artikel worden The Tunes geroemd om hun "volhardendheid en karakter"'. Een quote:

"Met het nummer Damn Fine Scissors barst het feest los, en een heuse crowdsurfer deint over het publiek. Het feestnummer gaat vlekkeloos over in het nummer met toepasselijke naam Pududu, dat we voor de deuren van Atlantis eerder die avond nog a capella hoorden. Net zo enthousiast, maar met contrabas, gitaar en trekharmonica nog nét even lekkerder om mee te swingen. Met een daverend applaus is er een einde gekomen aan het optreden die avond."

Verbod stoeptreden The Tunes?

De Gemeente Alkmaar heeft The Tunes verboden 29 april 22:00 uur op de stoep voor Atlantis een optreden te geven. Eerder riepen The Tunes het stoeptreden in het leven toen zij als gevolg van de problematiek rondom Atlantis voor de tweede keer een optreden aan hun neus voorbij zagen gaan. De Gemeente Alkmaar heeft The Tunes gewaarschuwd instrumenten in beslag te zullen nemen als toch voor Atlantis wordt gespeeld.

Aan de hand van een anoniem telefoontje naar de afdeling 'Gebruik en Vergunningen Buitenruimte' van de Gemeente Alkmaar is echter vastgesteld dat een willekeurig akoestisch bandje van 5 man tijdens Koninginnenacht wel degelijk muziek mag maken.

The Tunes zijn daarom vastbesloten op 29 april een optreden te geven in de binnenstad van Alkmaar; zij zijn 29 april om 22:00 uur te vinden op de stoep voor Atlantis. "Hoeperdepoep The Tunes op de stoep", nuanceert zanger Misha.

Het relatief nieuwe Google Trends , een dienst van Google geeft via grafieken een inzicht wanneer en hoe vaak op een bepaald woord is gezocht met Google. Ook vergelijkingen tussen steden, landen en talen in zoekgedrag is mogelijk.

Verder is te zien welke gebeurtenissen hebben gezorgd voor een sterke toename van het gebruik van een bepaalde zoekterm.

We deden op deze google trends eens de oefening met de woorden Vlaanderen in vergelijking Wallonië

en met de woorden Flandres in vergelijking met Wallonie, beiden gefilterd op de regio Belgium.

Blijkt dat elkaars interesse bijna nihil is.

Eigenaardig, als je Flandres in vergelijking met Wallonie filtert op de regio Frankrijk,

zie je enorme interesse voor Flanders vanuit Nord-pas-de-Calais en is die nog altijd bijna onbestaande vanuit Wallonie. Dit laatste is ook te zien op “Flanders” als je even filtert op de regio’s Belgium en France.

Zijn Vlaanderen en Wallonië inderdaad twee aparte volkeren die elkaar niet kennen en willen kennen; De regio Nord-pas-de-Calais, die vroeger deel uitmaakte van het Graafschap Vlaanderen heeft alvast zijn interesse in Vlaanderen niet verloren .

Wat hebben Melchor Wathelet (CDh), Jean-Luc Crucke (MR) en Christian Dupont (PS) met elkaar gemeen behalve het feit dat ze behoren tot de drie traditionele partijstromingen? Het feit dat ze gisteren zichzelf, in het Nederlands, ten beste gaven op het Kemphanendebat van de Gentse LVSV-afdeling.

Een debat dat, hoewel de opkomst lager lag dan bijvoorbeeld het Kopstukkendebat dat het LVSV in het eerste semester organiseerde, hoogst aangenaam was. Een debat waar de sprekers eindelijk eens hun zinnen konden afmaken voor ze in de rede gevallen werden. Een debat ook waar komaf gemaakt werd met de traditionele cliché's over onze Franstalige landgenoten. Een debat, tenslotte, waarvan men na afloop zeker mocht zeggen dat het geslaagd was zonder dat de sprekers elkaar hopeloos belachelijk gemaakt hadden.

Waarmee meteen bewezen is dat het politieke debat meer kan zijn dan wat sloganesk gebrul van LDD-piassen of platvloerse schimpscheuten van republikeinse Vlaamsnationalisten genre Vandendriesche of De Wever. Dat men hier een voorbeeld aan mag nemen. Alvast toch een les die het lokale N-VA mannetje aan zijn voorzitter en politiek zwaargewicht kan overbrengen.

Andere leuke vaststelling. In zijn introductie stelde LVSV-praesis Viaene dat het intussen wel bewezen is dat collectivisme tot miserie leidt en het liberalisme de enige vlucht vooruit is. Waarna het aanwezige LVSV-collectief vijf minuten later op Stalinistische wijze applaudisseerde op de gevatte uitspraken van hun ideologische geestesgenoot Crucke. Het ene collectivisme is het nu eenmaal het andere niet.

Toch petje af voor het LVSV dat middels dit debat ons met de neus op de feiten drukte; België en de Belgische politiek is meer dan een hoopje Nederlandstalige politici die debat na debat zichzelf uit de naad werken om zich Vlaamser dan Vlaams proberen te profileren. België is een combinatie van Frans en Nederlands, gekruid met een vleugje Duits. Een geschikte mix voor de gemondialiseerde wereld waarin we leven.

We gaan ze een boete geven...

Aan het bestuur van Ingelmunster

Geachte Christelijke Democratische Vlamingen,

Christelijke meerderheidspartij van mijn geboortedorp vond het zijn Democratische plicht om een op haar grondgebied verkeerd geplaatste Vlaams belang-affiche af te straffen met een boete.

Vandaag kregen we op ons secretariaat te Kortrijk bezoek van een gerechtsdeurwaarder met een 'betekening-bevel tot betalen gemeentelijke administratieve sanctie'.

Jullie doen daar in mijn geboortedorp Ingelmunster, blijkbaar jullie naam weer alle eer aan. Eerlijk gezegd, het kon ook een fout zijn van onze Oostrozebeekse plakploeg die daar op de grens met jullie een affiche neerplantte.

Blijkbaar neemt de CD&V het zelf niet zo nauw waar ze zijn affiches ophangt.

Had op de jongste verkiezing de Cd&V-kandidaat Pol VAN DEN DRIESSCHE, te Ingelmunster ook zijn affiches niet geplakt op een bord dat niet toegewezen was voor CD&V ?

Hier op de Ginste te Oostrozebeke ging een affiche van ELS DE RAMMELAERE ook op een aan het Vlaams Belang toegewezen bord overplakt ( klik op de foto hierboven ).

Het Vlaams Belang is de enige partij die zijn naam heeft MOETEN veranderen. De andere partijen kiezen op gezette tijdstippen ZELF een andere naam. Waarom bijvoorbeeld eens niet gaan voor PPBB: Politieke Processen, Boetes en Broodroven.

ROC Eindhoven maakt digitale koppeling met DIGI-K.

De invoer CGO in het MBO stelt aantal nieuwe eisen aan de onderwijsorganisatie o.a. op het vlak van planning en begeleiding van de individuele student. Een van die eisen is een competentiematrix die per student de individuele studieloopbaan inzichtelijk maakt.

De landelijke basisgegevens van deze matrix zijn in DIGI-K van het Coördinatiepunt toetsing kwalificaties MBO te vinden.Voor ROC Eindhoven was dit de reden om de eigen ontwikkelde applicatie Planning & Scores automatisch te laten vullen met voornoemde gegevens.

Via een digitaal constructief en slagvaardig overleg met het coördinatiepunt hebben we gezamenlijk het ultieme bereikt. Alle dossiers van de cohorten 2007-2008 en 2008-2009 zijn op dit moment, voor zover beschikbaar, ingelezen in Planning & Scores. Binnen de diverse opleidingen kan men nu een start maken om het onderwijs te gaan koppelen met de matrices uit de bijbehorende dossiers.

Elke student kan na het behalen van een deel van het onderwijs behorende bij zijn persoonlijke leerloopbaan de individuele matrix zien verkleuren.

Door deze verkleuring heeft de loopbaanbegeleider een goed vertrekpunt voor een individueel gesprek. Ook ouders krijgen op deze wijze eenvoudig zicht op de studievoortgang van zoon of dochter.

Transparant en voor alle betrokken partijen inzichtelijk onderwijs. Daar was het toch eigenlijk allemaal om te doen.

Mamluk castle discovered in northern Sinai

Egyptian archaeological mission unearthed a new military castle for Sultan Qounsoa Al Ghouri in El Tina Plain, Northern Sinai, dating back to the reign of 'Mamluks' . This came after just two weeks of unearthing the first castle in Qantara area, East Ismailia.

The Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosni, stated that the first castle is situated in East Qantara, being the first castle built in Egypt. It contains military industry city and glass factories, while the second one is situated in El Tina Plain, Northern Sinai, dating back to the same reign of ' Mamluks'.

Dr. Zahi Hawwas, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities cited that the castle built on an area of 300metters, adding the two castles were of top military and history importance to the cities in which they have been unearthed.

Het colosseum verrees in de regeerperiode van drie keizers en heette oorspronkelijk Amphitheatrum Flavium. Deze foto is een van een reeks foto's die ik 's-avonds heb gemaakt van het colosseum (Nikon D50, Nikon 18-200mm VR, 18mmm, f/3.5, 1.6/sec.)

Kledingsactie 26 april 2008

Op zaterdag 26 april organiseert Eenheid weer een kledingophaling (kleding, schoenen, handtassen,dekens). De ophaling begint om 9 uur.

De actie gebeurt in samenwerking met het Vlaams Internationaal Centrum en is ten voordele van een project voor de opvang van straatkinderen en het geven van alternatieve vorming in Manilla (Fillipijnen). Straatkinderen komen immers gemakkelijker in aanraking met het gerecht.
